Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive pathogen that causes severe infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Internalin genes are important virulence factors that facilitate the bacterium's invasion of host cells. This research aimed to quantify in vivo expression of selected internalin genes (inlF, inlP, and inlJ) and their corresponding host receptors (VIM, AFDN, and MUC2) during L. monocytogenes infection. To achieve this aim, a rabbit ligated intestinal loop model was constructed comprising two intestinal loops. The first loop was injected with 1 mL of L. monocytogenes (1 × 10⁷ CFU/mL), while the second loop was injected with 1 mL of PBS as …

It has previously been shown that exogenous bacterial ribosomes added to somatic cells and various cancer cell lines generate ribosome-induced cell clusters (RICs) capable of transdifferentiating into multiple cellular lineages. However, the scope of ribosome-induced transdifferentiation in cancer cells remains poorly understood. This study aimed to analyze the effects of exogenous ribosome incorporation on human cancer cell lines, specifically the intestinal epithelial cell line Caco-2 and the hepatocellular carcinoma cell line HepG2. Caco-2 and HepG2 cells were cultured with purified bacterial ribosomes in human ES/iPS cell medium after trypsinization, resulting in the formation of ribosome-induced Caco-2 (RICs-Ca) and HepG2 (RICs-He) …

Mathematically Driven Enhancement In Information Security, Suhaib Badran, Asmaa Alqassab
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
A new mathematically based cryptographic method has been proposed to improve information security; it involves transforming data into a matrix and performing bit-level operations. This decryption then follows the basic mechanism of a deterministic, fully invertible algorithm, with this invertible algorithm having the same principle as the existing ones: the process of decryption is symmetrical, where the process is reversed based on the input of the ciphertext. The plaintext is transformed into a square matrix, which includes matrix rotation, permutation of rows, circular bit shifting, and finally an affine linear transformation followed by an additional Base62-like encoding layer to further …

Indonesia is an archipelagic country surrounded by water and faces energy challenges due to the low use of renewable energy. Among the potential renewable options, marine energy is a particularly suitable resource given the country’s geographical nature. Based on this discussion, seawater temperature can be used as an alternative ocean thermal en-ergy known as ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) by using the difference in sea surface and deep-sea water temperatures. Therefore, this study aimed to examine OTEC installations in North Bali waters using closed-cycle OTEC calculations for a 5 MW system. Following this objective, we examined the water conditions by …

American Mythology: The Western, The American, The Christian, And The Intersection Of The Three In "The Sins Of Tom Budd", Brandon Kopp
Masters Theses
Close to the turn of the 19th century, Frederick Jackson Turner famously proclaimed the death of the frontier, and extolled the lapsed era for the virtues and qualities which it championed - qualities which he claimed defined the American cultural identity. The Western genre of fiction carries on the traditions and values of that era to past, present, and future generations of Americans and partakes deeply in the rich tradition of human storytelling in a way that examines universal human conditions from the unique perspective engendered by frontier living and the American West. Just as Homer's work created and built …
The Book Of Old, Sarah Booth
The Book Of Old, Sarah Booth
Masters Theses
This thesis explores how fantasy and fantasy-related screenplays externalize the conflict between characters' desires (external goals) and their needs (internal transformation) through surreal imagery, symbolic worlds, and narrative design. While traditional screenwriting mainly emphasizes the difference between what a character wants and what they need, fantasy uniquely makes this tension visible by turning psychological struggles into physical settings, creatures, and story challenges. Through close analysis of Spirited Away (2001), Pan's Labyrinth (2010, and Black Swan (2006), this thesis argues that fantasy cinema not only portrays character transformation but also renders it materially and visually, translating the abstract tension between desire …
Murder Of A Creative: Mfa Thesis, Himani Sanjeevkumar Mehta
Murder Of A Creative: Mfa Thesis, Himani Sanjeevkumar Mehta
Masters Theses
In the creative industry, the phrase “fast-paced environment” is often treated as an essential ingredient for productivity and success. The contemporary design landscape operates within an output-driven system that prioritizes speed, visibility, and measurable worth, contributing to the growing commercialization of creativity. Within this framework, the creative process is often diminished or overlooked where it no longer serves efficiency, reducing creativity to a consumable outcome rather than a reflective and sustaining practice. As a result, creative professionals and students increasingly experience creative anxiety, burnout, and paralysis, alongside imposter syndrome, perfectionism, and self-doubt. These conditions are rarely examined as systemic outcomes …

MECP2 duplication syndrome (MDS) is a rare X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder caused by duplications of the dosage-sensitive methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene. Developing therapies for MDS is challenging due to the variability in MECP2 expression among patients and the risk of inducing Rett syndrome through excessive pharmacological intervention. Reducing dosage to optimize silencing often compromises durability and necessitates increased dosing frequency. We present here a series of fully chemically modified small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) designed for isoform-selective and total Mecp2 silencing. Among these, we identify six lead siRNA candidates across two chemical scaffolds, achieving targeted total Mecp2 expression reductions ranging from …

Psoriasis And Its Interplay With Liver Diseases: Evidence, Mechanisms, And Clinical Implications, Rajaa Jaber Abdel Rasul, Noor Abdulhussain Naama, Sabaa Abd Jaber, Noor Faraj Kadhem
Muthanna Medical Journal
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease of immune-related origin. It is no longer classified solely as a localized skin disorder but is now recognized as a systemic disease associated with numerous complications and co-morbidities. Recent studies have demonstrated a strong link between psoriasis and several liver diseases, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and cirrhosis. This association is attributed to shared pathogenic mechanisms among these diseases, including metabolic disturbances, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation, as well as the pivotal role of inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α ), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-17 (IL-17). Recent studies …

A Charcoal Analysis At The Jupiter Inlet 2 (8pb35) Site In Jupiter, Florida, Christopher Rubido
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This project utilizes five sediment core samples from the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse archaeological (8PB35) site in northern Palm Beach County, Florida (four core samples derived from areas where cultural material has been found and one core from a nonanthropogenic area). These sediment core samples were analyzed using a variation of a tested charcoal analysis methodology often used with lake and peat bog cores, but in this case, the cores come from an upland coastal environment. The findings of this project have shown efficacy of the modified methodology for locating charcoal peaks in habitation zones found in core strata and as …
Drifting Neurons, Stable Geometry: Population Representations Of Instrumental Behavior In The Dorsomedial Striatum, Arati Sharma
Drifting Neurons, Stable Geometry: Population Representations Of Instrumental Behavior In The Dorsomedial Striatum, Arati Sharma
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The brain reliably supports learned behaviors over long periods of time despite continual biological changes that alter the activity of individual neurons, and the connections between them. For learned behaviors to persist, the information stored in neural populations must remain accessible even when the activity of individual neurons changes. Understanding how the brain achieves this is a fundamental challenge in neuroscience. The dorsomedial striatum (DMS) is critical for instrumental behavior, encoding information about actions, outcomes, and their relationships. Although extensive work has characterized the role of the DMS during learning and performance, less is known about how task-related information is …

Breaking The Box: How Pandora's Box Activates And Reinforces Gender Ideologies Through Linguistic Adherence To Archetypal Hegemonic Masculinity, Hannah Pitkofsky
Breaking The Box: How Pandora's Box Activates And Reinforces Gender Ideologies Through Linguistic Adherence To Archetypal Hegemonic Masculinity, Hannah Pitkofsky
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
Mythology, such as Pandora’s Box, provides a strong ideological framework for how our society views certain issues, including femininity and female potential. However, the images presented in these stories are often artificially crafted with implicit biases that allegorize femininity within a pre-established masculine and patriarchal framework, whose core concepts remain persistent in contemporary culture. In this paper, I dissect contemporary English translations of the original Pandora myth by analyzing language patterns and examining their cultural and linguistic implications. Furthermore, I investigate the authorial rationale behind these lexical frameworks through the lens of contemporary hegemonic masculinity. I argue that the current …

Effects Of A Mobile Web-Based Video Patient Education Program On Anesthesia And Recovery, Sinjung Jung, Eun-Hyun Lee, Chun-Ja Kim, Ji Yea Lee
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background and Purpose: Patients awaiting surgery often experience fear and anxiety related to limited information about surgery, concern about not waking up from anesthesia, uncertainty, surgical outcomes, and postoperative pain [1-3]. Preoperative education has been shown to improve these psychological problems [4, 5], and video-based education in particular is increasingly recognized as an effective teaching tool [1]. However, most preoperative education interventions primarily focus on the surgery itself, and rarely directly address major anesthesia-related issues, such as anesthesia safety or postoperative pain [6]. Therefore, in this study, we developed a mobile web-based video education program on general anesthesia and recovery, …

This research investigated the protective factors that shape alcohol use and problem drinking among emerging adults during the 2020s, with a spotlight on the COVID-19 pandemic. As this age group grapples with the complexities of self-discovery and independence, the pandemic introduced a new set of challenges and shifts. Through qualitative interviews, this study worked to uncover the resilience strategies and support systems that have emerged as crucial in mitigating alcohol misuse. It examined the role of social connections, mental health resources, coping mechanisms, and evolving social norms in buffering against problem drinking. While the pandemic intensified some risks, it also …
Banks' Conservative Lending Since Covid-19: The Effect On Trading Rates, Daniella Puig
Banks' Conservative Lending Since Covid-19: The Effect On Trading Rates, Daniella Puig
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation investigated how bank’s conservative lending during the COVID-19 global pandemic affected trading rates, examined through a constructivist lens and established with a flexible, mixed-methods design. Rather than addressing bank behavior and market pricing in a mechanical way, this study contextualizes mortgage lending conservatism as a response to uncertainty derived from a socially constructed interpretation of risk, the financial narrative at the time, and regulatory policy. Using qualitative interviews with mortgage lenders, combined with a quantitative analysis of survey data, this research explores mortgage lending decision- making during the crisis. The flexible design enables the use of both qualitative …

Background: Metabolic adaptation and maladaptation are hallmarks of the failing heart and may be a target for therapeutic interventions. For example, sustained glucose oxidation during cardiac stress is associated with increased activity and abundance of ACL (ATP-dependent citrate lyase, Acly), which produces acetyl-coenzyme A (CoA) from citrate and CoA and supports de novo lipid synthesis. However, our understanding of how ACL supports cardiac metabolic adaptation and its potential to modulate disease pathophysiology has not yet been investigated.
Methods: We used human heart tissue samples from healthy donors and patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathy. Next, we used CRISPR (clustered, regularly interspaced …

Background and aims: Atherosclerosis results from cellular and extracellular changes in the arterial wall, preceded by molecular shifts that initiate disease and drive tissue conversion, yet these changes are not yet fully described. More data are needed concerning these early changes in the coronary artery molecular landscape that signify the initiation of atherosclerosis and the subsequent tissue pheno-conversion to atherosclerotic plaque. This report summarizes results from a large biorepository of human coronary artery tissue, applying state-of-the-art omics technology, advanced data analytic methods, and an arterial organoid model system to predict molecular dynamics and identify potential regulatory mechanisms that could interrupt …
The Effects Of Anti-Gdnf On The Sensory And Autonomic Nervous System In The Heart, Tryphosa Konadu
The Effects Of Anti-Gdnf On The Sensory And Autonomic Nervous System In The Heart, Tryphosa Konadu
Honors Theses
Heart disease is the number one leading cause of death; about 1 in every five deaths is due to heart disease. “Heart disease” is a catch-all phrase that encompasses a variety of conditions that affect the heart’s structure and function. Many of these symptoms can be attributed to dysfunction within the parasympathetic, sympathetic, and sensory nervous systems. Neurotrophic factors like GDNF (Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor), BDNF (Brain-derived neurotrophic factor), and NGF (Nerve growth factor) promotes neuronal survival, and regeneration of the nerve fibers of the heart, especially sensory and autonomic nerve fibers. Studies have suggested that increased expression of …
Iran’S Development Of Criminal Foreign Policy Capabilities In The United States From 2013–2020, Scott James Harr
Iran’S Development Of Criminal Foreign Policy Capabilities In The United States From 2013–2020, Scott James Harr
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Iran’s development of criminal foreign policy capabilities in the United States represents an emerging phenomenon that is transforming the U.S.-Iran foreign policy relationship from a national security issue, primarily executed abroad, into a homeland security threat located within the United States. As an emerging dimension of the U.S.-Iran foreign policy relationship, this behavior by Iran must be thoroughly understood to aid U.S. policymakers in developing relevant policies to address the issue. However, Iran’s motivations for its international behavior are hotly debated among scholars of international relations (IR) theory. Some see Iran’s behavior as ideologically based, while others claim Iran’s behavior …

U.S. Navy Seal Operational Understanding From 1945 To 1989: A Case Study, Cade Morgan Kemp Pickford
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation will examine the evolution of U.S. Navy SEAL doctrine, mission scope, and overall strategic role from their formal establishment in 1962 through the Cold War interventions in Grenada (1983) and Panama (1989). It will argue that the SEALs transformed from a more experimental counterinsurgency force into a much stronger and more strategically significant instrument of U.S. military policy, shaped by the combat experience, institutional challenges, and ever-evolving geopolitical demands. Drawing upon several primary sources, including archival records, official military histories, several oral interviews, and doctrinal publications, this study employs a qualitative, thematic methodology to analyze patterns in operational …

BackgroundCrisis services are an important part of the system of mental health care for children and young people (CYP), but little is known about them or the experiences of CYP and families. This article reports findings from a normalisation process theory (NPT)-informed sequential mixed methods study, comprising three work packages (WPs), which set out to generate new knowledge in this area.MethodsApproaches to CYP crisis care across England and Wales were mapped in WP1 using survey design. Previously reported findings from this WP point to heterogeneity in service types and interventions. In WP2 eight contrasting services (five in England, three in …

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes millions of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in young children, older adults, and immunocompromised populations every year. RSV infection initiates in the upper respiratory tract and can progress to the lower airways, resulting in bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and even death. RSV primarily infects epithelial cells apically, but we hypothesized that basolateral exposure of the respiratory epithelium could provide an alternative mechanism of infection that contributes to LRTI development. Using a human nose organoid-air-liquid interface (HNO-ALI) model, we performed apical and basolateral inoculations with contemporaneous RSV strains (RSV/A/Ontario [RSV/A/ON] and RSV/B/Buenos Aires [RSV/B/BA]) representing the two RSV …

Development Of Novel Plasminogen Activators From Fragments Of Streptokinase Enzyme, Vijay G Mr
Theses and Dissertations
Thrombotic disorders such as myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis remain major causes of mortality and disability worldwide, creating a continuing need for effective, safe and affordable thrombolytic therapy. Streptokinase is one of the most widely used plasminogen activators because of its activity, low cost and broad availability. However, its wider clinical utility is limited by high immunogenicity, allergic reactions, neutralizing antibody formation and poor suitability for repeat administration. This thesis aimed to develop novel streptokinase-derived plasminogen activators by identifying smaller functional fragments that retain thrombolytic activity while potentially reducing immunogenicity.
A literature-guided fragment-based strategy was …
What We Should Know About The Reliability Of Empirical Legal Studies, Kathryn Zeiler
What We Should Know About The Reliability Of Empirical Legal Studies, Kathryn Zeiler
DePaul Law Review
The findings of replication studies conducted in the early 2010s
led many to declare that science was in the midst of a “replication
crisis.” Since then, a growing number of reforms have been
proposed and tested. The field of empirical legal studies seems
behind other fields such as psychology, economics, political science,
medicine, biology, and others that have taken significant steps
toward uncovering the general reliability of the field’s empirical
work, investigating the causes of observed unreliability, and
instituting and testing the effects of various reforms. The purpose of
this Article is to summarize what we know about the reliability …
