Cell Groups Reveal Structure Of Stimulus Space, Carina Curto, Vladimir Itskov Oct 2008

Cell Groups Reveal Structure Of Stimulus Space, Carina Curto, Vladimir Itskov

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

An important task of the brain is to represent the outside world. It is unclear how the brain may do this, however, as it can only rely on neural responses and has no independent access to external stimuli in order to ‘‘decode’’ what those responses mean. We investigate what can be learned about a space of stimuli using only the action potentials (spikes) of cells with stereotyped—but unknown—receptive fields. Using hippocampal place cells as a model system, we show that one can (1) extract global features of the environment and (2) construct an accurate representation of space, up to an …

North Pacific Right Whale (Eubalaena Japonica) Seasonal And Diel Calling Patterns From Long-Term Acoustic Recordings In The Southeastern Bering Sea, 2000–2006, Lisa Munger, Sean Wiggins, Sue Moore, John Hildebrand

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We assessed North Pacific right whale (Eubalaena japonica) seasonal and daily calling patterns in the southeastern Bering Sea (SEBS) using long-term hydrophone recordings from October 2000 through January 2006. We detected right whale calls on the SEBS middle shelf (<100 m depth) as early as May, intermittently throughout summer and fall, and as late as December. Calls also were detected on one day in June 2005 on the SEBS slope (>1,000 m), but were not detected near Kodiak Island from April to August 2003. In months with calls, detections occurred on more days in July–October (≥6 d/mo), than from May to June or November to December (≤3 d/mo). Calls were clustered in time and were usually detected on 1–3 consecutive days with a median interval of 6.5 d …

The Continuing Threshold Test For Free Exercise Claims, Andy G. Olree Oct 2008

The Continuing Threshold Test For Free Exercise Claims, Andy G. Olree

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

When a claimant challenges some governmental law or action under the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment, courts have long required the claimant to make out a prima facie case that the government has burdened the exercise of the claimant's sincerely held religious beliefs. This requirement has been referred to as the threshold test for free exercise claims, since claimants must make this showing as a threshold matter before courts will proceed to evaluate the burden and the governmental interest at stake under some standard of scrutiny. This Article argues that although the Supreme Court of the United States …

Justifying Motive Analysis In Judicial Review, Gordon G. Young Oct 2008

Justifying Motive Analysis In Judicial Review, Gordon G. Young

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Motives concern us in ordinary life and in the law of torts and crimes, and that concern is justified by consequentialist ethics. Despite occasional judicial protestations, motive analysis pervades large parts of constitutional law. Illegitimate motives aimed at suspect classes, or "designed to strike" at any number of rights identified as fundamental, presumptively invalidate the official actions that they animate. The consequentialist arguments for the use of motive review in this class of cases are relatively simple. Such illegitimate official motives tend to cause bad distributions of tangible benefits and burdens, or cause direct cognitive or emotional harm to the …

From Hillary Clinton To Lady Macbeth: Or, Historicizing Gender, Law, And Power Through Shakespeare's Scottish Play, Carla Spivack

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Female rule was anomalous in the sixteenth century, therefore, Elizabeth I developed a complex set of symbols, rooted in claims traditionally made by male rulers, to legitimate her claim to rule. Nonetheless, her reign was anxiety-provoking, and this article argues that the years after her death saw a backlash against female power. Part of this backlash consisted of the reworking of the symbols Elizabeth had used. This article examines this process of revision in Shakespeare's play Macbeth and, later, in the responses of King James I to claims of demonic possession.

This article draws together three historical moments - Queen …

The Facade Of Neutrality: Uncovering Gender Silences In International Trade, Barnali Choudhury Oct 2008

The Facade Of Neutrality: Uncovering Gender Silences In International Trade, Barnali Choudhury

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

International trade policies have traditionally been measured in terms of net economic benefit and market-based criteria. For the most part, these policies have largely ignored any of the societal effects that a liberalized trade regime may cause. Recently, however, the environmental, health, and labor impacts of trade agreements have slowly gained recognition as areas of concern. This recognition has led to an overall growing trend towards acknowledging the linkages between trade and non-trade issues.

One area that has been relatively untouched by any new developments is the issue of gender. Trade theories proceed from the premise that trade agreements are …

Molecular Processes That Handle — And Mishandle — Dietary Lipids, Kevin Jon Williams Oct 2008

Molecular Processes That Handle — And Mishandle — Dietary Lipids, Kevin Jon Williams

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Overconsumption of lipid-rich diets, in conjunction with physical inactivity, disables and kills staggering numbers of people worldwide. Recent advances in our molecular understanding of cholesterol and triglyceride transport from the small intestine to the rest of the body provide a detailed picture of the fed/fasted and active/sedentary states. Key surprises include the unexpected nature of many pivotal molecular mediators, as well as their dysregulation — but possible reversibility — in obesity, diabetes, inactivity, and related conditions. These mechanistic insights provide new opportunities to correct dyslipoproteinemia, accelerated atherosclerosis, insulin resistance, and other deadly sequelae of overnutrition and underexertion.

Coenzyme Q1 Redox Metabolism During Passage Through The Rat Pulmonary Circulation And The Effect Of Hyperoxia, Said H. Audi, Marilyn P. Merker, Gary S. Krenz, Taniya Ahuja, David L. Roerig, Robert D. Bongard

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The objective was to evaluate the pulmonary disposition of the ubiquinone homolog coenzyme Q1 (CoQ1) on passage through lungs of normoxic (exposed to room air) and hyperoxic (exposed to 85% O2 for 48 h) rats. CoQ1 or its hydroquinone (CoQ1H2) was infused into the arterial inflow of isolated, perfused lungs, and the venous efflux rates of CoQ1H2 and CoQ1 were measured. CoQ1H2 appeared in the venous effluent when CoQ1 was infused, and CoQ1 appeared when CoQ1H2 was infused. In normoxic lungs, CoQ …

To “Elevate Unfortunate Humanity” On-Screen: Linking World War I And Protestant Missions Through Silent Film, Christopher J. Anderson Oct 2008

To “Elevate Unfortunate Humanity” On-Screen: Linking World War I And Protestant Missions Through Silent Film, Christopher J. Anderson

Journal of Religion & Film

The purpose of this essay is to examine how post-World War I American Methodists used silent film to link the progress of the U.S. military with the advances of denominational missionaries overseas. Both the American army and the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S. were on separate yet intricately intertwined missions – one to promote the extension of American “democracy” and “civilization” by rescuing foreigners from the clutches of menacing dictators, the other to promote a version of U.S. Protestantism by saving foreigners from the grasp of non-Christian religions and religious practices.

Induction Of Winter Breeding In Small Mammals By 6-Mboa, Robert K. Rose, Roger K. Everton, Gregory E. Glass Oct 2008

Induction Of Winter Breeding In Small Mammals By 6-Mboa, Robert K. Rose, Roger K. Everton, Gregory E. Glass

Virginia Journal of Science

A plant-derived cyclic carbamate, 6-methoxybenzoxazolinone (6-MBOA), is

known to initiate reproductive activity in Microtus montanus. We studied

overwintering populations of four other rodent species, and observed increased

reproduction in experimental populations of two herbivorous species, Microtus

pennsylvanicus and Sigmodon hispidus, but not in two omnivorous species,

Oryzomys palustris and Mus musculus. These results suggest that low

concentrations of 6-MBOA may trigger seasonal breeding primarily in

herbivorous small mammals.

A Correlational Study On Parental Attachment And Spiritual Development Of College Students, Mary-Ellen Madigan Oct 2008

A Correlational Study On Parental Attachment And Spiritual Development Of College Students, Mary-Ellen Madigan

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

During college, students search for meaning in their lives and question their beliefs, behavior, and mortality (Garber, 1996). One way that students search for meaning is through their spiritual lives. Spirituality is “the personal quest for understanding of ultimate questions about life, about meaning, and about relationship to the sacred or transcendent” (Koenig, McCullough & Larson, 2001, p. 18). Parental attachment theory explains that students who have developed a secure attachment with their parents see their parents as a secure base from which to explore their environment (Kenny & Donaldson, 1991, p. 480). This environment may be internal or external. …

A Portrait Of Perseverance: A Glimpse Into The Life Of One Family In Edehara, Tunisia, Kathryn Graves Tindell

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Excerpt from Introduction:

What follows is a short story providing a glimpse into the life of Naïma and her family. The entire story is based on fact, each person is real in every detail and each event described occurred; however, the sequence of events is fictionalized. For example, I did not see the pottery made from beginning to end, but rather saw different steps of the process throughout the course of my seven days. In total, I did view every step except for retrieving the clay from the mountains, but as they told many stories about this, I have a …

Response To The 2007-8 Presidential Seminar On The Catholic Intellectual Tradition, Thomas D. Curran Ph.D. Oct 2008

Response To The 2007-8 Presidential Seminar On The Catholic Intellectual Tradition, Thomas D. Curran Ph.D.

Presidential Seminar on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition

The goal of Professor Thomas Curran from the History Department at Sacred Heart University in applying for the Presidential Seminar was essentially to learn more about the Catholic intellectual tradition (CIT) so that he could help design and teach the core-curriculum-course and organize the training of adjunct instructors who carry a substantial share of the teaching burden.

Ecology And Spirit: Reflections On The Cit Seminar, Richard M. Magee Oct 2008

Ecology And Spirit: Reflections On The Cit Seminar, Richard M. Magee

Presidential Seminar on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition

Professor Magee entered the CIT seminar in May of 2007 with some ideas about spirit and nature in American literature, and now, over a year later, he has, in the best traditions of philosophical enquiry, even more questions about how this complex relationship works. These new questions, however, have led to a significantly deeper and richer understanding of the texts I read, study, and teach, enlarging my intellectual horizons and sharpening my inquiries. His enriched scholarship has taken a number of forms, and in this report, hel briefly presents three specific and important examples.
