Maternal Photoperiodic History Affects Offspring Development In Syrian Hamsters, Annaliese K. Beery, Matthew J. Paul, Irving Zucker

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

During the first 7 weeks of postnatal life, short day lengths inhibit the onset of puberty in many photoperiodic rodents, but not in Syrian hamsters. In this species, timing of puberty and fecundity are independent of the early postnatal photoperiod. Gestational day length affects postnatal reproductive development in several rodents; its role in Syrian hamsters has not been assessed. We tested the hypothesis that cumulative effects of pre- and postnatal short day lengths would restrain gonadal development in male Syrian hamsters. Males with prenatal short day exposure were generated by dams transferred to short day lengths 6 weeks, 3 weeks, …

Dakota Land In 1862, A Genocide Forgotten: How Civilizational Transformation Can Get Lost In The Fading Rate Of History, Michael Andregg Oct 2008

Dakota Land In 1862, A Genocide Forgotten: How Civilizational Transformation Can Get Lost In The Fading Rate Of History, Michael Andregg

Comparative Civilizations Review

The year of 1862 was critical in a process by which a land larger than many nations was transformed from one civilization to another. But the process was not a classic conquest easily recorded in history books. Rather, it was a slow "digestion" of over 20 million hectares of territory by one civilization, accompanied by moments of true genocide or "ethnic cleansing" during long periods of high death rates for one group and high birth rates and immigration rates for the other group. But this was sufficiently gradual that most historians did not record it on their lists of wars …

What The Fish Is Going On Here? Are Regulations Being Followed At The Ver-O-Peso Market In Belém, Para?, Neil Thompson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since the commercialization of the amazonian fishery in the early 1970´s there have been major problems with enforcement of minimum capture length laws and regulations. It has been well documented with species such as tambaqui (Collosum macroponum) and mapara (Hypopthalamus edentates) that juveniles and pre-adults are being targeted by fishermen. This has led to a situation where most of the individuals present in fish markets are undersized and illegal according to IBAMA regulations. The majority of the research done on undersized illegal market fish has focused on markets in Manaus, Tefé and Santarem. This study seeks to find out if …

Viewing Virtual Property Ownership Through The Lens Of Innovation, Ryan Vacca Oct 2008

Viewing Virtual Property Ownership Through The Lens Of Innovation, Ryan Vacca

Faculty Publications

Over the past several years, many scholars have wrestled with the idea of how property rights for items created in virtual worlds should be conceptualized. Some have discussed utilitarian models, others have examined a Lockean natural rights theory, and still others view virtual property merely as another form of intellectual property. Regardless of how virtual property is conceptualized and which theory it best fits, most, if not all, commentators agree that the law ought to recognize virtual property as property and vest someone with those rights.

This Article moves beyond the initial debate about how property rights in virtual property …

Confessing In The Human Voice: A Defense Of The Privilege Against Selfincrimination, Andrew E. Taslitz Oct 2008

Confessing In The Human Voice: A Defense Of The Privilege Against Selfincrimination, Andrew E. Taslitz

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination is a cornerstone of American constitutional law, yet it faces erosion through recent Supreme Court rulings and scholarly critiques. The article presents a novel defense of this privilege, focusing on the protection of the "literal voice" and "metaphorical voice," arguing that compelled speech uniquely harms dignity, identity, and autonomy. It critiques existing justifications as insufficient and proposes a framework rooted in social science and linguistic compulsion, emphasizing the privilege's role in preventing state overreach and safeguarding individual autonomy.

Recovery From Monocular Deprivation Using Binocular Deprivation: Experimental Observations And Theoretical Analysis, Brian S. Blais, Mikhail Y. Frenkel, Scott R. Kuindersma, Rahmat Muhammad, Harel Z. Shouval, Leon N. Cooper, Mark F. Bear

Science and Technology Department Faculty Journal Articles

Ocular dominance (OD) plasticity is a robust paradigm for examining the functional consequences of synaptic plasticity. Previous experimental and theoretical results have shown that OD plasticity can be accounted for by known synaptic plasticity mechanisms, using the assumption that deprivation by lid suture eliminates spatial structure in the deprived channel. Here we show that in the mouse, recovery from monocular lid suture can be obtained by subsequent binocular lid suture but not by dark rearing. This poses a significant challenge to previous theoretical results. We therefore performed simulations with a natural input environment appropriate for mouse visual cortex. In contrast …

Toll-Like Receptor 2 Recognition Of The Microsporidia Encephalitozoon Spp. Induces Nuclear Translocation Of Nf-Κb And Subsequent Inflammatory Responses, Jeffrey Fischer, Colby Suire, Hollie Hale-Donze Oct 2008

Toll-Like Receptor 2 Recognition Of The Microsporidia Encephalitozoon Spp. Induces Nuclear Translocation Of Nf-Κb And Subsequent Inflammatory Responses, Jeffrey Fischer, Colby Suire, Hollie Hale-Donze

Faculty Publications

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites that are ubiquitous in nature and have been recognized as causing an important emerging disease among immunocompromised individuals. Limited knowledge exists about the immune response against these organisms, and virtually nothing is known about the receptors involved in host recognition. Toll-like receptors (TLR) are pattern recognition receptors that bind to specific molecules found on pathogens and signal a variety of inflammatory responses. In this study, we show that both Encephalitozoon cuniculi and Encephalitozoon intestinalis are preferentially recognized by TLR2 and not by TLR4 in primary human macrophages. This is the first demonstration of host receptor …

Jamaican Nightshade (Solanum Jamaicense): A Threat To Florida's Hammocks, Rodrigo Diaz, William A. Overholt, Kenneth Langeland Oct 2008

Jamaican Nightshade (Solanum Jamaicense): A Threat To Florida's Hammocks, Rodrigo Diaz, William A. Overholt, Kenneth Langeland

Faculty Publications

Jamaican nightshade is a prickly, perennial, invasive shrub in central and southern peninsular Florida. It was first seen in Florida in 1930 near St. Cloud, and has since been reported at several other locations in the state. Jamaican nightshade is primarily found in wooded habitats, where it can quickly become dominant in the understory, but it also occasionally grows in isolated patches in the open. Although the distribution of Jamaican nightshade does not appear to be rapidly expanding in Florida, land mangers should be made aware of the potential of this weed to establish at new sites, and initiate control …

Methadone For Treatment Of Pregnant Opiate Addicted Women: Is There A Safer Alternative? A Review Of Literature, Holly L. Tichelkamp, Thomas G. Parish Oct 2008

Methadone For Treatment Of Pregnant Opiate Addicted Women: Is There A Safer Alternative? A Review Of Literature, Holly L. Tichelkamp, Thomas G. Parish

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Methadone is commonly used for the treatment of pregnant opiate-addicts. But, it can have severe effects on the neonate including Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, increased length of stay in the neonatal intensive care unit, and intrauterine growth retardation. Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome includes neurological excitability, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and autonomic signs. Because of these adverse effects, studies have been conducted to determine what can help reduce the severe complications caused by methadone. Varied dosages of methadone and alternative medications, such as buprenorphine, slow-release morphine, and others have been studied. Most of the alternative medications, especially buprenorphine, are gaining popularity in Europe where there …
