An Analysis Of Marine Protected Areas Legislation In The Caribbean Lesser Antilles, Barry James Bleichner
An Analysis Of Marine Protected Areas Legislation In The Caribbean Lesser Antilles, Barry James Bleichner
LSU Master's Theses
Historically, marine resources and ecosystems were believed to be limitless and exploitation of those resources occurred with little regard to future consequences. Recent studies suggests that this belief is misplaced, as research indicates that many of these marine resources face extinction if protective measures are not implemented soon. Marine protected areas, or MPAs have garnered increasing attention as a means to effectively protect and conserve marine resources. Establishment and management of marine protected areas typically require implementing legislation in order to provide a legal basis for enforcement of MPA rules and regulations. The intent of this research was to determine …
Postcolonial Writing In Louisiana: Surpassing The Role Of French Traditionalism In Alfred Mercier's L'Habitation Saint-Ybars, Mary Florence Cashell
Postcolonial Writing In Louisiana: Surpassing The Role Of French Traditionalism In Alfred Mercier's L'Habitation Saint-Ybars, Mary Florence Cashell
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis explores the roles of French patriarchal ideologies of the Enlightenment and exoticism in Alfred Mercier’s novel, L’habitation Saint-Ybars. His novel portrays the antebellum Creole plantation as a hierarchy of strict gender roles similar to those that Enlightenment philosophy espoused. I use the family in Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s classic, Paul et Virginie, as one example of such a hierarchy. There are also, however, several instances where Mercier departs from the paternalistic norm. I interpret Mercier’s moving away from this model to be a declaration of a unique Louisianian identity.
Moderately-Rapid Assessment Of Alkaline Desiccation Environmental Systems, David Alan Bates
Moderately-Rapid Assessment Of Alkaline Desiccation Environmental Systems, David Alan Bates
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A moderately-rapid assessment tool was developed to analyze the waterless desiccation compost toilet investigated in a rural Mexican setting. Over 100 social factors were identified along with the applicable technical factors that influenced the low acceptability of the toilets. A 4-point rating scale was developed to increase the ability and speed of analyzing both the social and technical data. The treatment process was an alkaline-desiccation process with mean pH values of 8.2 ± sd 1.1 and water content of 18.3% ± sd 9.9, which resulted in mean fecal coliform values of 15.0 MPN/g ± sd 31.8, drastically lower than the …

How The Mustang Trampled The Luftwaffe: The Role Of The P-51 In The Defeat Of The German Air Force In World War Two, Robert W. Courter
LSU Master's Theses
The purposes of this study were to trace the evolution of the North American P-51 Mustang as an escort fighter in World War Two and to enumerate the reasons why it played a leading role in the extension of the American strategic bombing campaign into Germany and the ultimate defeat of the German Luftwaffe. The Mustang prototype was built in 1940 in response to a British request for a fighter to help repel German invaders. The original model, powered by an Allison engine and three-bladed propeller, was fast and maneuverable at low altitudes, but its performance deteriorated rapidly at altitudes …
Retrotransposon-Mediated Instability In The Human Genome, Shurjo Kumar Sen
Retrotransposon-Mediated Instability In The Human Genome, Shurjo Kumar Sen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
LINE-1 (Long Interspersed Element-1/L1) and Alu are two active retrotransposon families in the human genome that have the potential to create genomic instability either during the insertion of new elements or through ectopic recombination. However, recent in vitro analyses have demonstrated that these elements also repair DNA double-strand breaks, hence contributing to the maintenance of genomic integrity. As such, the comprehensive role of mobile elements in either creating or mitigating instability in primate genomes remains unclear. The recent sequencing of the chimpanzee and rhesus macaque genomes uniquely facilitates the accurate resolution of this question, as three-way computational alignment of the …
Evaluation Of Management Practices And Remediation Techniques For Improving Water Quality In Agricultural Systems, Theophilus Kene Udeigwe
Evaluation Of Management Practices And Remediation Techniques For Improving Water Quality In Agricultural Systems, Theophilus Kene Udeigwe
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Surface water quality impairment is often associated with agricultural activities. In this study, the effects of three sugarcane residue management techniques, namely burning (BR), shredding (SR), and retention (RR) of residues on: surface water quality, carbon export, and chemical composition of organic matter in the runoff sediments were characterized. Separate studies were conducted to evaluate predictive relationships for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in agricultural effluents, and the effectiveness of bauxite residues (red and brown muds) in reducing soluble nutrient/pollutant release from manure-impacted soils. All the selected water quality parameters were determined using EPA-approved analytical methods. The RR technique exported lower …
Understanding Indigenous Canadian Traditional Health And Healing, (Gus) Louis Paul Hill
Understanding Indigenous Canadian Traditional Health And Healing, (Gus) Louis Paul Hill
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This qualitative research study is situated within an Indigenous research methodology. The goal of the research was to develop an in-depth understanding of traditional healing from the perspectives of practitioners of traditional healing. It was important to explore the experiences of practitioners of traditional healing because there continues to be a lack of literature on this subject, as well as a significant lack of understanding and awareness about traditional healing and Indigenous Canadian people in mainstream society. The theoretical underpinnings of this research are holism and the four aspects of the self, visually represented in the Anishnaabe medicine wheel.

Escalation Of Wheel Running: An Animal Model Of Non-Drug Addiction, Ali Gheidi
Escalation Of Wheel Running: An Animal Model Of Non-Drug Addiction, Ali Gheidi
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Animal studies using the self-administration paradigm suggest that duration of drug access (Ahmed, 2005) and individual phenotype (Piazza, Deminiere, Le Moal and Simon, 1989) are important factors in the development of drug addiction. Wheel running in rats has been proposed as a model to study non-drug addictions (Eikelboom & Lattanzio, 2003). When first given ad lib wheel access, young male rats initially run at low levels (about 1000 wheel turns per night) and gradually increase this distance to high levels (about 5000 wheel turns per night) (Afonso and Eikelboom, 2003). Like with self-administration, duration of wheel access has been found …

The Spinobulbar System In Lamprey, James T. Buchanan, James F. Einum
The Spinobulbar System In Lamprey, James T. Buchanan, James F. Einum
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Locomotor networks in the spinal cord are controlled by descending systems which in turn receive feedback signals from ascending systems about the state of the locomotor networks. In lamprey, the ascending system consists of spinobulbar neurons which convey spinal network signals to the two descending systems, the reticulospinal and vestibulospinal neurons. Previous studies showed that spinobulbar neurons consist of both ipsilaterally and contralaterally projecting cells distributed at all rostrocaudal levels of the spinal cord, though most numerous near the obex. The axons of spinobulbar neurons ascend in the ventrolateral spinal cord and brainstem to the caudal mesencephalon and within the …

Corporate Responsibility And Carbon-Based Life Forms, Steven Ferrey
Corporate Responsibility And Carbon-Based Life Forms, Steven Ferrey
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
Corporations are being monitored as to their carbon base. The level of carbon in the atmosphere is reaching dangerous levels that threaten corporate productivity, as well as human health. Remember that humans are carbon-based life forms. This Article discusses in detail efforts to halt the release of carbon into the atmosphere and mitigate global warming, from state-led initiatives to litigation in lower courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. It concludes that incentivizing corporations to adopt renewable energy practices is the best way to address corporate citizenship and environmental responsibility.
Power Paradox: The Algorithm Of Carbon And International Development, Steven Ferrey
Power Paradox: The Algorithm Of Carbon And International Development, Steven Ferrey
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
The world is increasingly becoming smaller -- and hotter. The Kyoto Protocol Clean Development Mechanism, designed to reduce carbon emissions in developing nations and provide tradable Carbon Emission Reduction credits, has not motivated significant renewable energy investments in developing nations. Without such investments, especially in Asia which is expected to account for more than half of future growth in carbon emissions, world efforts to significantly reduce global warming have zero chance of success. The problem is not technological, but rather an institutional challenge to develop the correct laws, incentives and contract documents and tariffs to succeed in developing countries. This …

Dynamic Workflow Management For Large Scale Scientific Applications, Emir Mahmut Bahsi
Dynamic Workflow Management For Large Scale Scientific Applications, Emir Mahmut Bahsi
LSU Master's Theses
The increasing computational and data requirements of scientific applications have made the usage of large clustered systems as well as distributed resources inevitable. Although executing large applications in these environments brings increased performance, the automation of the process becomes more and more challenging. The use of complex workflow management systems has been a viable solution for this automation process. In this thesis, we study a broad range of workflow management tools and compare their capabilities especially in terms of dynamic and conditional structures they support, which are crucial for the automation of complex applications. We then apply some of these …
A Rhetoric Of Existentialism, Zachary Gershberg
A Rhetoric Of Existentialism, Zachary Gershberg
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Existentialism is often viewed as a morbid philosophy but adapting it to a rhetorical framework reveals a consistent interest in the ontological function of communication. The exchange of discourse and symbols is what ties humans together and existentialism examines the meaning that abounds in life as opposed to attempting to discover the meaning of life. As a rhetorical construct, existentialism provides a critical and unique view of agency and edification as a method of rhetorical practice.
The Diet Of Saltmarsh Consumers, Kari Ann Galvan
The Diet Of Saltmarsh Consumers, Kari Ann Galvan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Salt marshes are areas of high primary production that in turn support high secondary production. Macrophytes, phytoplankton and a variety of benthic algae all contribute to the high primary productivity. Each has the potential to contribute to the saltmarsh food web making it difficult to determine organic matter resources important to secondary production in salt marshes. Furthermore, our understanding of saltmarsh food webs is complicated by anthropogenic effects such as nutrient inputs and exploitation of key predators. I utilized a combination of natural abundance stable isotopes, isotope tracer additions, gut content analysis and manipulative experiments to determine the diets of …
The Synthesis Of Water Soluble N-Acyl Chitosan Derivatives For Characterization As Antibacterial Agents, Lakia Monique Champagne
The Synthesis Of Water Soluble N-Acyl Chitosan Derivatives For Characterization As Antibacterial Agents, Lakia Monique Champagne
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Currently, natural polysaccharides are being utilized increasingly in the markets because they exhibit biodegradability, biocompatibility, versatility, and are found abundant in nature. The diversity of natural polysaccharides provides the chemist with a broad spectrum of raw materials that can be used in many biological applications. Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide that possesses excellent biological properties. It has been recognized for its antibacterial activity, in that it is destructive towards the bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The antibacterial property of chitosan can be enhanced by changing the hydrophobic/hydrophilic nature of the polysaccharide backbone. This research entails …

Language Learning Through Storybook Reading In Headstart, Patricia Minnis Brazier-Carter
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore whether storybooks designed to elicit talk about letters and sounds, termed "alphabet-storybooks" will generate more print referencing behaviors from Head Start teachers than traditional storybooks, and if there is a concomitant positive impact on the learning of the children in these classrooms. In addition, the meaning reference behaviors of adults and impact on children also will be measured to determine if meaning is sacrificed at the expense of print referencing.
Cryopreservation Of Adipose Derived Adult Stem Cells And Multidimensional Cell Sheets, Sreedhar Thirumala
Cryopreservation Of Adipose Derived Adult Stem Cells And Multidimensional Cell Sheets, Sreedhar Thirumala
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Human adipose tissue provides a uniquely abundant and accessible source of adult stem cells. In response to chemical, hormonal or structural stimuli, these human adipose-derived adult stem (ASCs) cells can differentiate along multiple lineage pathways, including adipocytes, chondrocytes, myocytes, neurons and osteoblasts. Successful cryopreservation of scientifically and commercially important ASCs would revolutionize the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine industry. In this research, we have investigated the water transport phenomenon during freezing of several passages of adipose derived adult stem cells and generated the membrane permeability parameters in the presence and absence of cryoprotective agents. These measured permeability parameters were then …

The purpose of the current investigation was to examine the use of the Response to Intervention (RTI) model for English Language learners (ELLs) by using a computerized constant time delay procedure (CTD) that de-emphasized the use of language. Forty-five ELLs, 22 native English speakers, and five students with a diagnosis of mild mental retardation participated in the study. A computer-administered CTD procedure was utilized for paired associate tasks. The study found differences and patterns in students’ performances that could be used to differentiate responders and non-responders to intervention. An interesting finding was that once the students were divided into groups …
Bile Salts As Olfactory And Gustatory Stimuli In The Channel Catfish, Shane Howell Rolen
Bile Salts As Olfactory And Gustatory Stimuli In The Channel Catfish, Shane Howell Rolen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A chemotopic map of biologically relevant odorants (that include amino acids, bile salts and nucleotides) exists in the olfactory bulb (OB) and forebrain (FB) of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus (Chapter one). Neurons processing bile salt odorant information lie medially within these bilaterally symmetric structures; however, information as to how single neurons discriminate and process this odorant information is lacking. Chapters two and three of the dissertation identify the range of odorant bile salt molecules that excite these neurons [i.e. the excitatory molecular receptive range (EMRR)] within the bile salt chemotopic zones of the OB and FB. The results of the …

Using Microhistological Techniques To Predict Botanical Composition Of Horse Diets On Cool-Season Grass Pasture, Jesse Ira Morrison
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Microhistological analysis is a highly effective microscopic technique of determining botanical composition of animal diets by visual recognition of fecal plant fragments, and has been widely used in range studies. The objective of this study was to use microhistological techniques to predict the botanical composition of domesticated horse diets when grazing mixed cool-season pasture. Samples of tall fescue [Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) S.J. Darbyshire], Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) were evaluated for microscopically unique characteristics. Cool season pasture grazing studies were conducted in October 2006 and May 2007 in Lexington, KY. Eight thoroughbred mares were placed …
Trophic Control Of Saltmarsh Invertebrates, David Samuel Johnson
Trophic Control Of Saltmarsh Invertebrates, David Samuel Johnson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Top-down (consumer) versus bottom-up (resource) control of food webs has long interested ecologists. Here, I take advantage of a full-factorial design of ecosystem-wide manipulations of nutrient additions (loading rates 10x above background) and the significant reduction (~60%) of a key predator, the killifish Fundulus heteroclitus, in the tidal creeks of the Plum Island Estuary, Massachusetts. Prior to manipulations, annelids numerically constituted 97% of the infaunal community and the largest scale (creeks) accounted for little spatial variability in annelid populations and diversities. Tidal creeks were similar based on diversity indices, abundance, and community patterns, suggesting the tidal creeks are appropriate replicates/experimental …
Space-Time Multiresolution Approach To Atomistic Visualization, Dipesh Bhattarai
Space-Time Multiresolution Approach To Atomistic Visualization, Dipesh Bhattarai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Time-varying three-dimensional positional atomistic data are rich in spatial and temporal information. The problem is to understand them. This work offers multiple approaches that enable such understanding. An interactive atomistic visualization system is developed integrating complex analyses with visualization to present the data on space-time multiresolution basis facilitating the information extraction and generate understanding. This work also shows the usefulness of such an integrated approach. The information obtained from the analyses represents the system at multiple length and time scales. Radial distribution function (RDF) provides a complete average spatial map of the distribution of the atoms in the system which …
