Enhancing Wound Healing With Synergistic Dual-Drug Electrospun Roflumilast And L-Arginine Loaded Pla/Pva Nanofibers Through Fabrication, Optimization, And In Vivo Assessment, Samar A. Salim

Nanotechnology Research Centre

Current trends in improved wound management emphasize the development of dual-drug-loaded electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds. Herein, electrospun dual-drug loaded PLA/PVA nanofibrous scaffolds, incorporating roflumilast, a selective phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor with anti-inflammatory activity, and L-arginine, a precursor to nitric oxide with stimulating activity towards wound healing and tissue regeneration, were developed. A dual-spinneret electrospinning process enabled the coloading of drugs in PLA and PVA phases. Scaffolds were characterized by SEM, FTIR, and XRD, showing consistent fiber morphology, and amorphous drug formation. FTIR analysis was performed to confirm drug–polymer compatibility and successful incorporation of roflumilast and L-arginine within the PLA/ PVA nanofibrous matrix. Swelling …

The Western Indian Ocean (WIO) is known for its high diversity of chondrichthyans (sharks, rays, and chimaeras). However, intense fishing pressure has led to severe population declines and local extinctions of several species. The Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA) process is a collaborative, evidence-based approach used to identify critical habitat for chondrichthyans. We analysed ISRAs across the WIO to quantify the diversity of research methods used to identify them, evaluate spatial overlap with designated marine protected areas (MPAs), model the influence of several species- and jurisdiction-specific variables on ISRA delineation, and explore the importance of incorporating unpublished data into …

Blood Product Transfusion And Coagulopathy In Children With Traumatic Brain Injury: A Narrative Review., Robert Marcel T. Huibonhoa, Niranjan Vijayakumar, Daniel Kelly, Oliver Karam, Madhuradhar Chegondi

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of critical illness and mortality in children. Transfusion of blood products, a common intervention in the management of pediatric TBI, has important implications for related principles, including trauma-induced coagulopathy, cerebral perfusion, and cerebral oxygen delivery. Knowledge gaps persist due to the limited availability of pediatric-specific data regarding blood product transfusion in TBI. In particular, there is a lack of prospective studies defining appropriate specific laboratory thresholds and transfusion targets, as well as insufficient evidence to guide the weighing of potential benefits against transfusion-related risks in this population. Although blood product transfusion in …

Perception As Beholding: Theological Possibility And Moral Implication Of Merleau-Ponty's Notion Of Embodied Subject, Erickson L. Totanes

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

In this article, I argue that Merleau -Ponty’s concept of perception reveals a way of seeing where the subject is involved with the object in a dynamic, reversible, and expanding relationship. This notion challenges the traditional and Cartesian subject -object dichotomy by emphasizing the embodied and lived experience of perception which elicits a process, a way of looking, anticipating, and reflexively, a way of being itself. By aligning seeing with beholding, I attempt to show how as simple an act as seein g evokes a manner of being related to an object, other people, and the world. The emergence of …

Surf And Turf: How Litigation Against Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations Can Inform Regulation Of The Aquaculture Industry, Amanda Kapitula Jan 2026

Surf And Turf: How Litigation Against Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations Can Inform Regulation Of The Aquaculture Industry, Amanda Kapitula

Pace Environmental Law Review

Industrial agriculture dominates the U.S. agricultural industry. On land, animals are stuffed into factory-like facilities, called concentrated animal feeding operations (“CAFOs”), where they are raised to maximize the output of food products. In the process, they produce vast amounts of waste, contaminating surrounding air and water resources. Increasingly, factory farms are making their way into the water as the fishing industry shifts from wild-catch systems to aquaculture operations, or the raising of fish for consumption. While aquaculture has the potential to be a more sustainable option than both wild-catch and animal agriculture, concentrated aquatic animal production facilities (“CAAPFs”) also have …

Reclaiming My Story: A Freirean Framework For Surviving Trauma And Transforming Recovery Into Liberation, Carl Bryan Jan 2026

Reclaiming My Story: A Freirean Framework For Surviving Trauma And Transforming Recovery Into Liberation, Carl Bryan

The Interactive Journal of Global Leadership and Learning

This white paper explores trauma recovery through the lens of Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970/2018), framing healing as an act of critical consciousness and liberation rather than passive survival. Using the author’s lived experience of stalking, manipulation, and emotional abuse as a case study, it reimagines recovery not as a return to normalcy but as a dialectical process of reclaiming narrative agency, reconstructing identity, and transforming pain into purpose. Drawing upon Freirean concepts of conscientização (critical consciousness), dialogue, and praxis, the paper outlines a model for survivors to move from internalized oppression toward empowerment and social transformation.

The continued evolution of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has compromised neutralizing antibody responses elicited by prior infection or vaccination and abolished the utility of most monoclonal antibody therapeutics. We previously described a computationally-designed, homotrimeric miniprotein inhibitor, designated TRI2-2, that protects mice against pre-Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variants. Here, we show that TRI2-2 exhibits broadly neutralizing activity of SARS-CoV-2 variants and protects mice against BQ.1.1, XBB.1.5 and BA.2.86 challenge when administered intranasally post-exposure. The resistance of TRI2-2 to viral escape by most variants and the ability to deliver it directly to the upper airways highlight the potential of the multivalent …

Comparing Power Outputs Of A Jump Shrug With A Hex Bar Vs A Straight Bar, Joshua Neumann Jan 2026

Comparing Power Outputs Of A Jump Shrug With A Hex Bar Vs A Straight Bar, Joshua Neumann

Doctorate in Kinesiology

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine whether barbell selection influenced power outputs during loaded jump shrugs in collegiate athletes and to connect research findings to practical applications in strength and conditioning. Although Trap Bars are often assumed to provide mechanical advantages during explosive lifts, limited research has evaluated their impact during ballistic derivatives such as jump shrugs. This study addressed that gap by comparing the performance of Straight Bar and Trap Bar exercises across four standardized loads in male and female Division II athletes. A repeated-measures design was used to assess barbell velocity, concentric mean power, peak landing …

Due to the paucity of validated cell surface osteosarcoma-specific targets, patients with this condition have long been excluded from the benefits of antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) therapy observed in patients with several solid and hematologic malignancies. Our comprehensive surfaceome profiling approach previously identified osteosarcoma-specific cell-surface antigens that are highly expressed in osteosarcomas but minimally expressed in normal tissues. As a result, one such antigen, CADM1, was selected for the generation of an ADC. We tested a CADM1-targeting ADC with a tesirine payload (SG3249) in vitro in osteosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and neuroblastoma patient-derived xenograft cell lines. In vivo, we tested six CADM1-expressing osteosarcoma …

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) has identified intermediate epithelial states in pulmonary fibrosis, including KRT5-/KRT17+ aberrant basaloid cells in humans and Krt8+ alveolar differentiation intermediates (ADIs) in mice. Their functional contributions to fibrogenesis, however, remain unclear. Here, we introduce an RNA-sensing-dependent protein translation technology that enables selective targeting of Krt8+ ADI cells in vitro and in vivo. Transcriptomic analysis revealed Small Proline-Rich Protein 1 A (SPRR1A) mRNA as a shared marker of murine Krt8+ ADIs and human KRT5-/KRT17+ basaloid cells, distinguishing them from other lung cell populations. Using programmable RNA sensors, we demonstrated selective EGFP-labeling of Krt8+ ADI cells in vivo, …

Bioactive peptides are produced from soy milk protein hydrolysis using trypsin. The research began with the preparation and separation of soy milk protein, followed by fractionation using ammonium sulphate, protein hydrolysis, and SDS-PAGE analysis of protein hydrolysates. Fractions exhibiting the highest degree of hydrolysis were further fractionated by SPE and tested to determine the antibacterial activity Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The peptide sequence of the active peptide as an antibacterial was identified, employing LC-HRMS. The mode of action between active peptides and bacterial membran was analysed using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The findings displayed that F15 contained the highest …

Immersive Language Learning Platform Using Extended Reality And Avatars, Dongeek Shin Jan 2026

Immersive Language Learning Platform Using Extended Reality And Avatars, Dongeek Shin

Defensive Publications Series

Conventional language learning applications often lack the immersive, real-world conversational practice necessary for effective language acquisition. This disclosure describes a method for language acquisition using an extended reality (XR) platform that generates realistic environments populated by interactive avatars. These avatars can be rendered using a text-grounded Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) and are trained on datasets of native speakers’ speech and facial expressions. A large language model (LLM) facilitates real-time, audio-based conversation between the user and the avatars, with conversational difficulty adapting to the user’s proficiency level. A spaced repetition algorithm can also be used to reinforce vocabulary. The purpose of …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive brain tumor that often progresses despite resection and treatment. Timely and continuous assessment of GBM progression is critical to expedite secondary surgery or enrollment in clinical trials. However, current progression detection requires costly and specialized MRI examinations, which, in the absence of new symptoms or signs, are usually scheduled every 2-3 months. Here, we hypothesized that changes in daily activity are associated with GBM growth and disease progression. We found that wheel-running activity in GBM-bearing mice declined as tumors grew and preceded weight loss and circadian breakdown by over a week. Temozolomide treatment in the …

Collagen fibers are essential to the mechanical behavior of soft tissues, including sclera. Conventional models often represent these fibers statistically, potentially missing crucial aspects of their role in tissue behavior. In this study, we expand on a direct fiber modeling approach that we recently presented based on explicitly representing the sclera long, interwoven fiber bundles. Specifically, our goal was to capture specimen-specific 3D fiber architecture and anisotropic mechanics of four ovine sclera samples (superior from Eye-1, temporal and superior from Eye-2, and temporal from Eye-3), each tested under five conditions: equi-biaxial (1:1) and four non-equi-biaxial (1:0.75, 0.75:1, 1:0.5, and 0.5:1). …

Introduction: Lung alveolar macrophages (AMs) and epithelial cells form the first line of defense against inhaled pathogens. Their interactions strongly influence innate immune responses in the lung, yet the mechanisms underlying this cross-talk remain incompletely understood. Methods: In this study, we established a co-culture system using a primary model of AMs (MPI alveolar macrophage-like cells) and MLE-12 alveolar epithelial cells to investigate innate responses and cellular interactions during bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced TLR4 activation. Results: Cytokine and chemokine profiling revealed that co-cultures exhibited significantly enhanced proinflammatory responses to both LPS and TLR2 ligands—including IL-6, TNF-a, and MCP-1 secretion—compared with mono-cultures. Strikingly, …
