Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Sorting steers into one of three different feeding periods — calf-feds, summer yearlings, and fall yearlings — resulted in no differences in performance or average carcass characteristics. Sorting decreased the amount of variation in hot carcass weight and carcasses over 950 lbs.
The Effect Of Delaying Initial Feedlot Implant On Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Calf-Fed Steers, William A. Griffin, Don C. Adams, Richard N. Funston
The Effect Of Delaying Initial Feedlot Implant On Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Calf-Fed Steers, William A. Griffin, Don C. Adams, Richard N. Funston
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Steers in two, 2-year experiments (n = 409) were either given an implant at feedlot arrival or implanted 30 days after feedlot entry. In Experiment 1, steer calves were not implanted at branding and in Experiment 2 calves were implanted at branding. There was no difference in feedlot performance for either experiment. However, in Experiment 1 there was a year by treatment interaction for marbling score suggesting that delaying implant in calves may affect quality grade.

Effects Of Aging On Veal Shoulder Muscles, Gary A. Sullivan, Chris R. Calkins, D. Dwain Johnson, Brian G. Sapp
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Six muscles were attained from 36 paired veal shoulders and each pair was assigned to one of six aging comparisons. After aging, muscles were cooked and evaluated using Warmer Bratzler shear force. The largest decline in shear force occurred during comparison of 3 and 10 days aging with additional improvements found up to 24 days. The m. infraspinatus was the most tender muscle; the m. supraspinatus was the toughest. The m. serratus ventralis had the greatest response to aging and the m. pectoralis profundus (brisket) had the least.
Relationship Between Metabolizable Protein Balance And Feed Efficiency Of Steers And Heifers, Grant I. Crawford, Stephanie A. Quinn, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson
Relationship Between Metabolizable Protein Balance And Feed Efficiency Of Steers And Heifers, Grant I. Crawford, Stephanie A. Quinn, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Two individual feeding experiments were analyzed for the relationship between metabolizable protein (MP) balance and feed efficiency (G:F) in individually-fed steers and heifers. In Experiment 1, 29 crossbred steers were fed steam-flaked corn (SFC)-based diets containing either 0% or 1.2% urea (DM basis). In Experiment 2, 75 crossbred heifers were fed SFC-based diets with either 0% or 1.5% urea. The NRC (1996) MP model was used to determine individual degradable intake protein and MP balances. In both experiments there was a negative relationship within treatment between MP balance and G:F. These results were not expected, and three potential causes were …
Age Discrepancies With The Radiocarbon Dating Of Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata Nutt.)., Phil R. Geib
Age Discrepancies With The Radiocarbon Dating Of Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata Nutt.)., Phil R. Geib
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
When ancient hearths at open archaeological sites do not yield carbonized annual plant remains or other highquality samples, wood charcoal is commonly used for radiocarbon dating. Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.), a shrub frequently used for fuel across much of the western United States, seems a potentially better candidate for 14C dating than tree wood since the possibility for significant age discrepancy might be less. A comparison of multiple assays from single features reveals that sagebrush can overestimate age more than even tree wood charcoal. A plausible cause of this appears to be persistence of the shrub on the ground surface …
Pesticides And Children: Unwitting Participants In Experimentation, Valerie Watnick
Pesticides And Children: Unwitting Participants In Experimentation, Valerie Watnick
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that the regulatory system in the United States has failed to adequately protect children from the dangers of toxic pesticides, particularly Malathion and Lindane, which are used in shampoos despite their well-documented health risks. The Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) was intended to address these risks but has not been effectively enforced, leaving children, especially those in underserved populations, vulnerable to severe health consequences. The continued approval of these harmful products highlights a broader regulatory failure to prioritize human health over industrial interests.

Evaluation Of Aflatoxin-Related Products From Ozonated Corn, Alfredo Domingo Prudente, Jr.
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study assessed the efficacy of the ozonation process in degrading aflatoxin in corn, and investigated the chemical reaction between aflatoxin and gaseous ozone. Ozonation (12-13 wt%) totally degraded aflatoxin B1 in a model system. Conversion of aflatoxin into polar compounds was observed during ozonolysis of 100 µg aflatoxin B1 in an aqueous environment and in solid form. Seven intermediate reaction products were separated by two-dimensional thin layer chromatography. HPLC analysis of ozonated AFB1 revealed the presence of six major peaks. MALDI-MS analysis detected compounds that have higher molecular weights than AFB1. The dichloromethane fraction contained compounds with molecular ion …

The Effects Of Food Deprivation On Caffeine And Food Reinforcement In Females, Lauren Baillie
LSU Master's Theses
This study examined the reinforcing value of caffeine and food in a sample of 14 normal-weight females who indicated some degree of dietary restraint, and consumed caffeine daily. Eligible individuals participated in two sessions, one of which required a 24-hour fast. During both sessions, participants completed measures assessing caffeine withdrawal symptoms, urge to drink caffeine, hunger, and a multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) requiring them to earn points towards either snack foods or caffeinated beverages. There were no significant differences between the fasting and non-fasting conditions on MCQ scores, though the means were in the predicted direction (i.e., participants appeared to work …
The Effects Of Quercetin On Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Oxphos Regulation, Jeff Lee Soileau
The Effects Of Quercetin On Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Oxphos Regulation, Jeff Lee Soileau
LSU Master's Theses
A high fat diet causes a reduction in the expression of the genes of the electron transport chain, mitochondrial carrier proteins, and PGC-1α and PGC-1ß mRNA. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been linked to numerous chronic diseases. The antioxidant quercetin has been shown to protect against damage caused by exogenous and endogenous free radicals. The purpose of this study was to determine if quercetin would protect the genes of mitochondrial biogenesis (PGC-1α and PGC-1ß) and OXPHOS regulation (NDUFB5 and SDHB) from the downregulation caused by consumption of a high fat diet. The quadriceps muscle was removed from 21 male, C57BL/6J mice that …
Dactyls Reveal Evolutionary Patterns In Decapod Crustaceans, Jeffrey Guy Agnew
Dactyls Reveal Evolutionary Patterns In Decapod Crustaceans, Jeffrey Guy Agnew
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Because of their high preservation potential and uses in foraging and defense, decapod crustacean dactyls (movable fingers of claws) are potentially excellent test subjects for an ongoing debate concerning the relative importance of top-down (predators) and bottom-up (prey) controls on morphologic diversification and evolution. The utility of dactyls for inferring evolutionary patterns were evaluated using living and subfossil xanthoid crabs sampled from the southeast U.S. Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts, and were used to: (1) distinguish the roles of selection and constraint on dactyl morphology through allometric and shape comparisons in the context of the crab’s phylogenetic relationships and …

The purpose of this study is to determine if the Sharpening Math Skills Lab technology-mediated mathematics instructional practices for math-delayed middle school students have positive effects on their mathematics achievement and spatial visualization ability and to gauge student engagement in learning, implementation of the principles of instructional design, and attitudes toward mathematics instruction. The results of a recent meta-analysis report a range of significantly positive to significantly negative effect sizes which establish a need for further evaluation of academic achievement utilizing technology-mediated mathematics programs at the middle school level (Slavin, Lake, & Groff, 2007). The literature (Moreno & Mayer, 2000) …
How To Remember Thee?: Problems Of Memorialization In English Writing, 1558-1625, Sean Flory
How To Remember Thee?: Problems Of Memorialization In English Writing, 1558-1625, Sean Flory
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the use of funeral commemoration in religious and political controversies in early modern England. By examining the rhetoric used in funeral sermons and elegies, I show that commemorative writers use figural interpretation of the Bible to legitimize praise by linking the deceased to characters from scripture. Figural interpretation places the dead into a framework of ecclesiastical history and creates Protestant saints used as exempla in political and religious debates. This dissertation examines funeral sermons, elegies, and other commemorative poems written between 1558 and 1625. Chapter one discusses the development of figural interpretation in Elizabethan funeral sermons. …

Characterization And Comparison Of Cell Frequency, Growth, And Multipotential Differentiation Of Adult Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Derived From Equine Bone Marrow And Adipose Tissue, Martin Andreas Vidal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Equine bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and adipose tissue-derived stromal cells (ASCs) were compared for frequency within their respective tissues, cell doubling characteristics and differentiation multipotential in culture based on histochemical staining and compositional analysis. Equine MSCs and ASCs from young adult horses were harvested and isolated from sternal bone marrow and supragluteal subcutaneous adipose tissue, respectively, and grown up to passage 10 (P10) to determine cell doubling characteristics. Limit dilution assays were performed on primary and passaged (P2, P4) MSCs and ASCs to determine the frequency of colony forming units with a fibroblastic phenotype (CFU-F), and the frequency …
Assessing A Hydrothermal Liquefaction Process Using Biomass Feedstocks, Jason S. Midgett
Assessing A Hydrothermal Liquefaction Process Using Biomass Feedstocks, Jason S. Midgett
LSU Master's Theses
The need to reduce the United States dependence on foreign oil has never been greater. In the past decade emphasis has been placed on developing new and/or improved means to procure clean renewable energy. Liquefaction, which was developed for coal conversion over a century ago is one of these areas. Liquefaction used for biomass conversions to bio-oils is grouped under the thermochemical conversion (TCC) area of energy conversion methods along with gasification and pyrolysis. This thesis discusses liquefaction experiments conducted using varieties of Louisiana biomass feedstocks. Dairy manure collected from the Louisiana State University Dairy Farm in Baton Rouge, was …
Molecular Diversity And Coat Protein Expression Of Sweet Potato Leaf Curl Virus, Dina Lida Gutierrez Reynoso
Molecular Diversity And Coat Protein Expression Of Sweet Potato Leaf Curl Virus, Dina Lida Gutierrez Reynoso
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Leaf curl virus diseases have been reported in sweetpotato throughout the world. One of the causal agents is Sweet potato leaf curl virus (SPLCV) which belongs to the genus Begomovirus (family Geminiviridae). In the United States, SPLCV has been found infecting an ornamental sweetpotato and several breeding lines but not in sweetpotatoes grown for commercial production. SPLCV does not cause symptoms on Beauregard, the predominant sweetpotato cultivar in the US, but it can reduce its yield. Since SPLCV could become an important constraint for sweetpotato production; diagnosis, identification, and characterization are essential steps to develop an effective management program. The …
Redutive Dehalogenation Of Chlorinated Alkanes By Novel Bacteria At The Petroprocessor Of Louisiana Inc. Superfund Site, Jun Yan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A reductively dehalogenating enrichment culture was established using chloroalkane-contaminated groundwater from the PetroProcessors of Louisiana, Inc. (PPI) Superfund site. Two novel, strictly anaerobic bacterial strains, designated as BL-DC-8 and BL-DC-9, were isolated from the enrichment culture. These strains represent the first bacteria known to anaerobically dehalogenate 1,2,3-trichloropropane, the degradation pathway of which was determined. Both strains could be cultured in completely defined basal medium and were also able to dehalogenate a variety of other vicinally chlorinated alkanes including 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, and 1,2-dichloropropane via dichloroelimination reactions. Chlorinated alkanes containing only a single chlorine substituent (1-chloropropane, 2-chloropropane), chlorinated alkenes (tetrachloroethene, trichloroethene, …
Heterogeneous Catalyzed Macromolecular Hydrogenations In Oscillating Systems, Alan Bussard
Heterogeneous Catalyzed Macromolecular Hydrogenations In Oscillating Systems, Alan Bussard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
An examination of novel oscillatory (alternating gas and liquid phase) reactors and heterogeneous catalysts for multi-phase macromolecular reactions was carried out. A monolith-containing square die with Pd/Al2O3 catalysts was used to successfully hydrogenate poly(styrene) (PS). The inherent pulse behavior of the extruder was found to be sufficient to approach intrinsic kinetics at low polymer concentrations. At higher (10 wt% PS) concentrations, forced pulsing was shown to have a greater impact on observed reaction rates. Selectivity with this extruder-fed reactor was better than with a stirred tank in all cases, due to a more plug-flow-like residence time distribution. While accurate control …
Sorption And Desorption Characteristics Of Tylosin In Three Louisiana Soils And Clay Minerals, Zehua Zhou
Sorption And Desorption Characteristics Of Tylosin In Three Louisiana Soils And Clay Minerals, Zehua Zhou
LSU Master's Theses
Tylosin, a macrolide class and widely used antibiotic in animal production, could contaminate environment through manure application to soil and further to river and ground water. Tylosin transport and movement in the environment are largely determined by its sorption and desorption in soils, which are poorly understood so far. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine (1) the optimal conditions for tylosin stability, (2) sorption and desorption characteristics of tylosin by poultry litter-impacted three Louisiana soils and (3) sorption and desorption of tylosin by selected clay minerals, the main components of soil which have strong potential application in …
A Novel Automated Approach Of Multi-Modality Retinal Image Registration And Fusion, Hua Cao
A Novel Automated Approach Of Multi-Modality Retinal Image Registration And Fusion, Hua Cao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Biomedical image registration and fusion are usually scene dependent, and require intensive computational effort. A novel automated approach of feature-based control point detection and area-based registration and fusion of retinal images has been successfully designed and developed. The new algorithm, which is reliable and time-efficient, has an automatic adaptation from frame to frame with few tunable threshold parameters. The reference and the to-be-registered images are from two different modalities, i.e. angiogram grayscale images and fundus color images. The relative study of retinal images enhances the information on the fundus image by superimposing information contained in the angiogram image. Through the …
Isolation And Characterization Of Two Siamese Phenotypic Modifiers And Their Role In Endoreplication And Trichome Development, Remmy Wekesa Kasili
Isolation And Characterization Of Two Siamese Phenotypic Modifiers And Their Role In Endoreplication And Trichome Development, Remmy Wekesa Kasili
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Recessive mutations in the ENS1 gene of Arabidopsis thaliana result in reduced trichome branching without altering the ploidy level of trichomes. This implies that ENS1 regulates trichome branching in an endoreplication-independent manner. Mutations in ENS1 also enhance the multicellularity of sim mutant trichomes indicating that ENS1 plays a role in the regulation of the cell cycle during trichome cell differentiation. We have shown that ENS1 is required by the negative regulators of trichome branching for the trichomes to achieve their supernumerary branching. The interaction between ens1-1 and try-JC suggests that ENS1 is involved in both primary and secondary branching events …
Evaluation Of Three Methods For Teaching Intraverbals To Children With Language Delays, Nicole Trosclair-Lasserre
Evaluation Of Three Methods For Teaching Intraverbals To Children With Language Delays, Nicole Trosclair-Lasserre
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Direct instruction is often necessary to develop language or expand language use in individuals with language delays. Previous research has begun to identify certain training conditions that result in more efficient use of instructional time devoted to language development. Specifically, incorporating mands into the instructional arrangement, increasing the quality of reinforcement delivered for interspersed tasks, and including instructive feedback stimuli into the consequences of learning trials have all demonstrated more efficient learning of targeted language skills. The purpose of the current investigation was to compare three methods for teaching intraverbals (i.e., conversation skills) to individuals with deficits in this area. …
Gas-Phase Formation Of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals From Thermal Degradation Of Catechol, Hydroquinone, Phenols And Tobacco, Julien Gnonlonfoun Adounkpe
Gas-Phase Formation Of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals From Thermal Degradation Of Catechol, Hydroquinone, Phenols And Tobacco, Julien Gnonlonfoun Adounkpe
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Catechol, hydroquinone and Phenol are major constituents of the mainstream tobacco smoke. The toxicity of tobacco has been attributed to the ability of catechol and hydroquinone to undergo endogenous or exogenous redox cycling to form semiquinone type radicals responsible of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) formation. ROS such as hydroxyl radicals can cause severe oxidative stress on biological tissues and can provoke severe signaling pathways leading to cardiovascular and pulmonary dysfunctions and carcinogenesis. Given that semiquinone type radicals are organic radicals, characterized by their high instability and reactivity; it is somewhat surprising that they can live long enough mostly when associated …
Wax Extraction And Characterization From Full-Fat And Defatted Rice Bran, Junghong Kim
Wax Extraction And Characterization From Full-Fat And Defatted Rice Bran, Junghong Kim
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Rice bran oil (RBO) contains 3-4% waxes (rice bran wax, RBW), which are composed of wax esters (WE), hydrocarbons, and other minor constituents. Saponified rice bran wax esters (RBWE) generate fatty acids, long chain alcohols, and phytosterols. Phytosterols and long chain fatty alcohols (policosanol) are known to reduce serum cholesterol and inhibit hepatic cholesterol synthesis. The yields and RBWE contents of RBO and RBW extracted from full-fat RB (FFRB) and defatted RB (DFRB) were determined using 6 different conditions with Soxhlet and Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). The compositions of WEs from RBO and RBW were also compared. RBW was obtained from …
Land Use And Water Quality Characterization Of Boeuf Basin, La, Joseph Wesley Leblanc
Land Use And Water Quality Characterization Of Boeuf Basin, La, Joseph Wesley Leblanc
LSU Master's Theses
The three primary goals of this project were to establish the ambient background of water quality in the Lake Boeuf basin in southeast Louisiana; establish land use patterns in the basin and the relation to water quality; and develop a preliminary plan to improve water quality through the use of best management practices and wetland assimilation. Urban and agricultural acreage borders the basin and runoff from these lands forces loadings of nutrients into the adjacent canals where they become channelized and ultimately exit the Boeuf Basin into Lac des Allemandes. From September 2007 until February 2008, water sampling occurred monthly …
Chemotactic And Inflammatory Responses To And Recognition Of Encephalitozoon Spp. Of Microsporidia, Jeffrey Lynn Fischer
Chemotactic And Inflammatory Responses To And Recognition Of Encephalitozoon Spp. Of Microsporidia, Jeffrey Lynn Fischer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Microsporidiosis is an emerging disease among immunocompromised individuals who often present with chronic diarrhea. The intracellular, eukaryotic parasites responsible for this pathology can often disseminate, causing multiorgan infections. Dissemination of these pathogens is believed to occur through vehicular spread by macrophages. The macrophage response to microsporidia is poorly understood. The information, described herein, is focused on defining the host-pathogen interaction and subsequent inflammatory response in human monocyte-derived-macrophages (MDM) against Encephalitozoon spp. of microsporidia. Initial studies were designed to better define the infection kinetics in MDM using various microscopic analysis and novel staining approaches. Spore adherence and uptake occurs within the …
