On Zeitgeist, James Sham Jan 2008

On Zeitgeist, James Sham

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an exploration into the possibilities and repercussions of articulating zeitgeist, that is, the spirit of our current age. The parameters and ramifications of such a project are, in this writing, analyzed in reference to the notion of historicity, and the narrative gaze that it perpetuates. The mechanism of canonization, and a discourse's capacity to be viral are examined.

Flow-Acting: Modern Sports Science And The Preparation Of Actors, Barrett Slade Billew Jan 2008

Flow-Acting: Modern Sports Science And The Preparation Of Actors, Barrett Slade Billew

Theses and Dissertations

Theatre artists and acting teachers throughout history have sought to find and create presence. By combining modern sports science with an understanding of systems of actor training I have suggested an approach that makes presence a trainable skill. My coach Dr. Scott Sonnon, developer of the Circular Strength Training System, has refined modern sports science to emphasize the development and maintenance of flow-state. This state allows the athlete to respond openly and freely within a constantly changing situation.By combining my life long study of acting with my eight years of work with Coach Sonnon I am developing a system to …

Civic Habits: A Predictive Model Of Volunteer Behavior, Susan G. White Jan 2008

Civic Habits: A Predictive Model Of Volunteer Behavior, Susan G. White

Theses and Dissertations

The findings of this research indicate that volunteering is influenced by a number of factors, one of which is gender. The data used in this study reveal a different profile of the volunteer than is presented in much of the research on volunteering, which tends to profile the "most likely" volunteer as female, employed by the public sector, possessing a higher education and having children. The questions addressed in this research are: 1) What are the contextual effects of volunteering and 2) Is there a relationship of one or more of these effects to gender? The findings indicate men in …

Bounded Surface, Emilie Sayward Brown Jan 2008

Bounded Surface, Emilie Sayward Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between surface, perception, and structure has occupied my graduate studies. Locating, transforming, and transcending the surface requires play with perceptive abilities not only of vision, but of touch, hearing, and the other senses as well. How do the interactions of sense with the qualities of a surface determine our perception of the world? What role does the extension of the senses play in one's ability to perceive surface and structure? Using sense information gleaned from surfaces, the tectonics of our world are made visible. Might this relationship be played backwards as well? Composed structures produce surfaces upon which …

The Effect Of Cell Type On The Efficacy Of Cmv Antiviral Drugs, Benjamin Meza Jan 2008

The Effect Of Cell Type On The Efficacy Of Cmv Antiviral Drugs, Benjamin Meza

Theses and Dissertations

Until recently, all in vitro drug susceptibility assays of cytomegalovirus (CMV) were performed in clinically irrelevant fibroblast cells. This study sought to test if drug susceptibility was affected by cell type. MRC-5 embryonic lung fibroblasts and ARPE-19 retinal pigmented epithelial cells were infected with BADrUL131-Y4 epithelial/fibroblast tropic virus under serial concentrations of ganciclovir (GCV) or maribavir (MBV). Virus was quantified using plaque reduction, GFP fluorescence, and yield reduction. Both drugs performed less efficiently in ARPE-19 cells. A cell type effect was observed for both plaque reduction and yield reduction assays with implications for the treatment of CMV retinitis as well …

Out Of South America: Multiple Origins Of Non-Native Apple Snails In Asia, Kenneth Hayes Jan 2008

Out Of South America: Multiple Origins Of Non-Native Apple Snails In Asia, Kenneth Hayes

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

Apple snails (Ampullariidae: Pomacea) native to the New World have become agricultural and environmental pests widely in southern and eastern Asia since their introduction in about 1980. Although their impacts have been extensively documented, considerable confusion persists regarding their identities and geographical origins. Efforts to resolve the confusion have suffered from inadequate taxonomic and geographical sampling from both native and introduced ranges. Using phylogenetic and genealogical methods, we analysed 610–655 bp of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I DNA sequences from 783 apple snails from 164 Asian locations and 57 native South American locations. In Asia, we found four species of …

Family Support Within A Child Care Centre: A Case Study, Rikki Maynard Jan 2008

Family Support Within A Child Care Centre: A Case Study, Rikki Maynard

Theses : Honours

This review explored the effects of stress in the family environment and the role that family support plays in reducing this stress. Specifically, research concerning the role that child care workers play in providing support to families who utilise their services was examined. The literature showed that there are many stressors facing families today and that the experience of stress in the family environment can have a detrimental effect on children's developmental outcomes. While the literature showed that experiencing social support can reduce stress in the family environment, it was also found that many families face isolation from such forms …

Marketing intelligence is a future-oriented activity that helps an organization cope in its market. It includes all ways an organization acquires and uses information. It is comprised of all kinds of information on the market and marketing research; the collection and analysis of internal data, competitive analysis; analysis and reverse engineering of competitor’s products; understanding how and where to add value for customers; and the process of synthesizing large amounts of informally gathered information about the industry and business environment. While marketing and marketing intelligence are widely used in business, they are less used in non-business organisations such as academic …

Geometric And Extra-Geometric Spatial Conceptualisation: A Cross-Linguistic And Non-Verbal Perspective, Anne Crum-Lindqvist Jan 2008

Geometric And Extra-Geometric Spatial Conceptualisation: A Cross-Linguistic And Non-Verbal Perspective, Anne Crum-Lindqvist

School of Psychology Theses

Almost all past empirical work exploring the Functional Geometric Framework (FGF) proposed by Coventry and Garrod (2004) for spatial language use has been based on a single language - English. Therefore the extent to which the framework applies across languages has not been established. The current thesis investigated whether geometric and extra-geometric factors affect production and comprehension of spatial language across three languages; English, Finnish and Spanish. Eight cross-linguistic appropriateness rating studies identified similarities and differences in the factors that underlie our verbal conceptualisation of space across three classes of spatial relations/terms: 1) topological relations (e.g., in/on), 2) vertical axis …

Beef knuckles (n = 160) were obtained from source-verified cattle finished on 30% wet distillers grains plus solubles enriched with varying levels of alfalfa hay (4 or 8%), corn silage (6 or 12%), or corn stalks (3 or 6%) based on NDF. Proximate analysis, pH, oxidation-reduction potential, fatty acid composition, and sensory analysis were conducted on the rectus femoris muscle to determine if roughage inclusion, in conjunction with wet distillers grains plus solubles and cattle source, affects beef flavor with particular interest in liver-like off-flavor. Proximate analysis, fat content, and oxidation-reduction potential were unaffected (P ≥ 0.129) by diet or …

Determination Of Diet Protein And Digestibility Of Native Sandhills Upland Range, Bobbi Gene Geisert, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Don C. Adams, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Walter H. Schacht Jan 2008

Determination Of Diet Protein And Digestibility Of Native Sandhills Upland Range, Bobbi Gene Geisert, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Don C. Adams, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Walter H. Schacht

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A significant year by grazing level effect was detected on CP content of diet samples collected from 2003 to 2005 at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory. During drought years (2003 and 2004) cows selected plants which were higher in CP and lower in digestibility. High levels of grazing pressure decreased diet IVOMD compared to diets from ungrazed and moderately grazed pastures. Prediction models generated from these data predict dietary CP and organic matter disappearance (OMD) of cattle grazing native Sandhills range pastures.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

At the University of Nebraska Gudmundsen Sandhills Lab for 60 days from mid-June to mid-August for 2 years (2005 and 2006), 24 paddocks were randomly assigned to one of three treatments. Treatments were control (CON) at the recommended stocking rate and no supplementation, double stocked (2X) or double stocked with 5 lb of DDGS daily (SUP). There was no difference in ADG between the CON and 2X calves; however, SUP calves gained more than the unsupplemented groups. Forage use was not different between SUP (58%) and 2X (62%); however, use was lower for CON group (36%). Distillers dried grains supplementation …

The Effects Of Supplementing Wet Distillers Grains Mixed With Wheat Straw To Growing Steers, Brandon L. Nuttelman, Terry J. Klopfenstein, William A. Griffin, Matt K. Luebbe

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A growing study compared feeding wet distillers grains, dried distillers grains, and a mix of 66% wet distillers grains and 33% wheat straw as supplements to a forage-based diet. Steers were supplemented 0, 2, 4, or 6 lb distillers grains/head daily. Wet distillers grains and dried distillers grains produced higher final body weight and dry matter intake compared to the mix. Increasing levels of distillers grains increased performance in forage based diets and wet grains mixed with straw reduced forage intake.

Dental Health At Oakwood Mound, Will County, Illinois, Daniel L. Osborne Jan 2008

Dental Health At Oakwood Mound, Will County, Illinois, Daniel L. Osborne

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Human dentitions from Oakwood Mound were examined to ascertain dental health in this population. Attrition rate, carious lesions, and antemortem tooth loss were scored for each adult. No significant differences were present between the aforementioned variables by age or sex. The attrition rate supports the hypothesis that the individuals interred in Oakwood Mound shared similar subsistence strategies. The prevalence of carious lesions suggests a dependence on carbohydrates as a major dietary resource. High rates of antemortem tooth loss also may have resulted from reliance on this food source, although this connection is not as direct as the caries data. These …

Influence Of Corn Hybrid And Processing Method On Finishing Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Flint W. Harrelson, Matt K. Luebbe, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Wayne A. Fithian Jan 2008

Influence Of Corn Hybrid And Processing Method On Finishing Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Flint W. Harrelson, Matt K. Luebbe, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Wayne A. Fithian

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Five commercially available corn hybrids were evaluated for finishing cattle performance and carcass characteristics when fed as high-moisture (HMC) or dry-rolled corn (DRC). No significant interactions were observed between hybrid and processing method. Corn hybrid had no significant impact on ADG or DMI, but did have a minor influence on F:G. However, these data suggested that processing as HMC-method had a greater effect on cattle performance than hybrid.

Influence Of Corn Hybrid And Processing Method On Ruminal And Intestinal Digestion, Flint W. Harrelson, Nathan F. Meyer, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Wayne A. Fithian Jan 2008

Influence Of Corn Hybrid And Processing Method On Ruminal And Intestinal Digestion, Flint W. Harrelson, Nathan F. Meyer, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Wayne A. Fithian

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Using the mobile bag technique, five commercially available corn hybrids harvested as either dry-rolled or high-moisture corn were evaluated for site and extent of DM and starch digestion. Total-tract DM digestibility was improved 7 to 16 percentage units, and total-tract starch digestibility was improved 9 to 18 percentage units among hybrids when processed as high-moisture corn compared to dry-rolled corn. The results of this trial suggest that hybrid and processing method interact and can influence DM and starch digestibility.

Modeling Daily Water Intake In Cattle Finished In Feedlots, Rodrigo A. Arias, Terry L. Mader Jan 2008

Modeling Daily Water Intake In Cattle Finished In Feedlots, Rodrigo A. Arias, Terry L. Mader

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Simple regression and multiple regression analyses were conducted to estimate factors affecting daily water intake(DWI) of finishing cattle. Seasonal simple linear regression equations were very poor predicting DWI (r2 < 0.15). Best results were obtained with the overall simple regression. The multiple regression analysis showed that daily minimum temperature (or THI), solar radiation, and dry matter intake were the most important factors affecting DWI in cattle finished in feedyards. The following prediction equation was developed: daily water intake, gal*d-1 = -0.52677+ (0.1229 *DMI, lb*d-1) + (0.01137*solar radiation, kcal*d-1) + (0.06529*daily minimum temperature, °F).
