Feeding Performance And Survival Of Louisiana Poeciliid Fishes Exposed To Residential Wastewater Effluent, Jonathan Chapman Jan 2026

Feeding Performance And Survival Of Louisiana Poeciliid Fishes Exposed To Residential Wastewater Effluent, Jonathan Chapman

Masters Theses

Mosquitoes are a primary transmitter of vector-borne disease, and their larvae can thrive within shallow pools of stagnant water. Rainwater drainage ditches are a common sight in many communities, and in Louisiana, they are dually used as outlets for onsite residential wastewater discharge in neighborhoods disassociated from municipal sewage treatment. However, when discharge systems malfunction, the water becomes uninhabitable to mosquito predators, allowing mosquitoes to thrive. This research examines the predation performance of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), sailfin mollies (Poecilia latipinna), and least killifish (Heterandria formosa), the primary biological control agents utilized to combat mosquitoes within ditch communities. Individuals were captured …

The Role Of Isotocin In Female Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Reproductive Behavior And Its Implication For Intranasal Oxytocin Therapy In Humans, Katelynn M. Benge

Masters Theses

In the past several decades, oxytocin has been colloquially termed the “cuddle hormone,” due to its role in pair-bonding and monogamy (Carter et al., 1992). In addition to being used experimentally for psychological disorder, it has also been used in couple’s counseling settings (Anagnostou et al., 2014; Domes et al., 2016). The outcomes of this research reveal mixed results, creating a need for further research in the topic to understand the exact mechanisms by which oxytocin works in the brain to induce this prosocial response. This study sought to address this deficit through the zebrafish animal model. The zebrafish serves …

The Food Ethics, Sustainability And Alternatives Course: A Mixed Assessment Of University Students’ Readiness For Change, Charles Feldman, Stephanie A. Navarro Silvera

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

Growing interest in food sustainability education aims to increase awareness of food distribution systems, environmental degradation, and the connectivity of sustainable and ethical food practices. However, recent scholarship has questioned whether such pedagogical efforts are meaningfully internalized by students or lead to sustained behavioral change. Prior studies document persistent gaps in students’ understanding of sustainability impacts and the limited effectiveness of existing instructional approaches in promoting transformative engagement. To address these concerns, the Food Ethics, Sustainability and Alternatives (FESA) course was implemented with 21 undergraduate and graduate students at Montclair State University (Montclair, NJ, USA). Course outcomes were evaluated using …

Regeneration Of Swimming Antennae After Partial Amputation In Long- And Short-Lived Daphnia, Charles Schumpert, Rekha C. Patel, Jeffry L. Dudycha

Faculty Publications

Regeneration, the ability of an animal to restart a developmental process and thus rebuild itself following injury or loss, is generally thought to be inversely related to aging, the progressive decline of organismal functions and fitness that occurs as adults get older. We sought to test whether recently evolved differences of aging in the crustacean Daphnia were accompanied by evolutionary divergence of regenerative ability. Using the short-lived D. pulex and the long-lived D. pulicaria, we conducted an assessment of regenerative ability in which we amputated part of the swimming antenna and observed subsequent regeneration. In four clones isolated from …

Understanding Higher-Order Motion Terms In Image Sequences, Fisseha Admasu Ferede Jan 2026

Understanding Higher-Order Motion Terms In Image Sequences, Fisseha Admasu Ferede

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation presents a comprehensive framework for learning accurate, and physically meaningful representation of motion from image sequences. The central theme of this work lies in advancing optical flow estimation from discrete-time two-frame formulation toward a continuous time multi-frame model capable of learning higher-order motion terms and dynamics, with wide ranging applications including developing structural disease biomarkers from medical images. We first develop SSTM (Spatiotemporal Recurrent Transformer for Multi-Frame Optical Flow Estimation), a deep learning model that leverages a sequence of multi-frames to infer accurate optical flow by learning temporal dependencies across successive motion cues. The architecture integrates recurrent 3D …

Rangelands are crucial to human well-being, but their ability to provide ecosystem services is threatened. We (1) quantified key ecosystem services provided by rangelands, (2) assessed short- and long-term impacts of fertilization (nutrient addition) and the exclusion of large grazing herbivores with fences (herbivore exclusion) on services, and (3) identified synergies and trade-offs among services. We measured indicators of ecosystem services and plant diversity at 79 sites across six continents in the global Nutrient Network. Short-term herbivore exclusion increased forage quantity and soil fertility, but longer-term herbivore exclusion decreased both along with plant richness and pollination. Nutrient addition improved forage …

Decoupling Of Reproduction And Lifespan Trade-Off In Caenorhabditis Elegans Through Microbial Programming, Nora M. Villafuerte Jan 2026

Decoupling Of Reproduction And Lifespan Trade-Off In Caenorhabditis Elegans Through Microbial Programming, Nora M. Villafuerte

LSU Master's Theses

The microbiome is increasingly recognized as a major regulator of host physiology. Using the Caenorhabditis elegans model, we investigated how natural commensal bacteria modulate host reproduction and lifespan through internal egg hatching, a phenotype in which retained embryos hatch within the maternal body. Screening strains from the CeMbio collection identified four focal strains Ochrobactrum BH3, Lelliottia JUb66, Pantoea BIGb0393, and Enterobacter CEent1 that significantly increased internal egg hatching during the late reproductive period. This contrasts with pathogenic bacteria, which induce early-onset internal egg hatching. Across the focal strains, worms exhibited reduced total brood size but an expanded reproductive window relative …

Induction Of Moderate Dna Damage Enhances Megakaryopoiesis And Platelet Production, Virginia Camacho, Luis Francisco Zirnberger Batista, Et Al. Jan 2026

Induction Of Moderate Dna Damage Enhances Megakaryopoiesis And Platelet Production, Virginia Camacho, Luis Francisco Zirnberger Batista, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Megakaryocytes (MKs) are large, hematopoietic cells with a polyploid, multilobulated nucleus. Although DNA replication in MKs (endomitosis) is well studied, limited investigations have examined the impact of DNA instability on megakaryopoiesis. Poly-adenosine diphosphate (ADP) ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitors are chemotherapeutics that result in accumulation of DNA damage and are commonly associated with thrombocytopenia, presumably mediated through platelet progenitors, MKs. To explore PARP inhibitor-induced thrombocytopenia, we treated mice with the PARP inhibitor niraparib. Although high-dose niraparib treatment led to thrombocytopenia, consistent with clinical observations, lower-dose treatment led to a significant increase in bone marrow MKs, MK progenitors (MkPs), and circulating platelets. …

A Chemogenetic Approach For Temporal And Cell-Specific Activation Of Endogenous Gpcrs In Vivo, Gwendolyn Shingles, Qianqian Pang, Jian Weng, Ryan Singer, Waleed Babar, Jiaqi Shen, Luis Vazquez-Rivera, Yao Chen, Peng Li, Wenjing Wang

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Cell-specific regulation of endogenous G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) is crucial for understanding their roles in physiological processes. We present chemogenetic tools using shield-1-dependent irreversible protein switches to regulate peptide agonist activity. To demonstrate this platform, we engineered chemogenetically regulated pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (cPACAP), which exhibited >15-fold chemical-dependent regulation of endogenous receptor activity. In vivo application of cPACAP allowed neuronal activation via the endogenous receptor for PACAP, engaging neural circuits that control respiratory and feeding behaviors. By integrating cPACAP with transgenic mice, we selectively activated endogenous PACAP receptor signaling in hypocretin-expressing neurons of the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA), revealing …

The Coalition For Fairness In Soho And Noho, Inc. V. City Of New York Jan 2026

The Coalition For Fairness In Soho And Noho, Inc. V. City Of New York

All Decisions

The Court of Appeals reversed the Appellate Division, upholding the City's 2021 rezoning plan for SoHo/NoHo artist lofts. The plan imposed a one-time fee on landlords for converting Joint Living-Work Quarters for Artists (JLWQA) units to unrestricted residential use. The court held that this fee does not constitute a compensable taking under the Fifth Amendment's Takings Clause. It reasoned that landlords lack a compensable property interest in converting their units to a new, more valuable use, as the fee does not burden their existing property rights or coerce them into relinquishing an interest that the government would otherwise have to …

The Corpus Juris Of (Alaska Native) Inherent Tribal Sovereignty, Nazune Menka Jan 2026

The Corpus Juris Of (Alaska Native) Inherent Tribal Sovereignty, Nazune Menka

Alaska Law Review

The inherent Tribal sovereignty of Native nations predates the formation of the United States and is reflected in the constitutional vision of tripartite sovereignty. Yet their sovereignty is oft diminished explicitly by federal law or implicitly by federal courts. This implicit divestiture is often the result of the federal judiciary’s inconsistent interpretations of Indigenous Peoples law. This Article argues that a more principled and coherent approach for federal judges would be to consistently make use of the corpus juris, or whole body of law, including the in pari materia or affiliated statutes canon. The Article posits that the corpus juris …

Anchoring Deference: The Chevron Doctrine, Loper Bright, And Alaska Administrative Law, Jon W. Katchen, Will R. Crowther

Alaska Law Review

After statehood, the Alaska Supreme Court operated on a blank legal slate. No Alaska precedent, for example, addressed the fundamental question of when courts should defer to an agency’s statutory interpretation. In addressing this issue, the Alaska Supreme Court largely adopted the framework developed by federal courts in the 1950s and 1960s, prior to the emergence of the Chevron doctrine. The federal case law from this era relied on nebulous standards to guide when an agency’s interpretations were subject to the deferential reasonable basis review. Not surprisingly, by adopting that federal jurisprudence, Alaska precedent suffers from the same shortcomings. And …

Alaska’S Hidden Gems: Advocating For The Protection Of Deep-Sea Corals, Both In The Courtroom And Beyond, Lauren Beizer

Alaska Law Review

Coral reefs are ecologically, financially, and aesthetically one of the world’s greatest resources. Off the coast of Alaska, many unique species of deep-sea cold-water corals exist and provide various public health benefits, contribute vital ecosystem functions to their surrounding environment, and serve as economic tourist attractions. Alaska’s coral reefs are exceedingly valuable to the Earth due to their overall ecological value. However, these unique coral species significantly lack state and federal protections, which have recently been under consideration in several lawsuits at the federal level. American Oceans Campaign v. Daley and Oceana, Inc. v. National Marine Fisheries Service et al., …

Investigating Host Factors In Coronavirus Assembly And Egress, Surovi Binte Sharmin Mohona Jan 2026

Investigating Host Factors In Coronavirus Assembly And Egress, Surovi Binte Sharmin Mohona

Dissertations

Coronavirus (CoV) structural proteins congregate at the ER-Golgi intermediate compartments (ERGIC) prior to virus budding into the organelle lumen. Subsequent trafficking and fusion of virus-containing, ERGIC-derived vesicles then release nascent viruses from infected cells. Our findings in this dissertation illuminate mechanisms by which CoV structural proteins coalesce at the virus assembly and budding sites. The cytoplasmic tails of all CoV spike (S) glycoproteins contain variants of a consensus KxKxx coatomer-binding motif. Host coatomer complexes facilitate retrograde trafficking of client cargo proteins via recognition of such motifs. Utilizing reverse genetics methodologies, we introduced variations in the S coatomer motif in a …

Lucy Wortham James And The Gospel Of Wealth: A Case Study Of Female Philanthropy In Rural Missouri During The Progressive Era, Jacob F. Rinehart

The Confluence

Various historical scholars have examined the role of Andrew Carnegie's Gospel of Wealth on philanthropic attitudes and endeavors of affluent Americans during the Progressive Era. Modern developments, driven by post-structural feminist theory, have shown that rural-born Missouri women, exemplified by Phoebe Apperson Hearst, acted as complementary equals to Carnegie through their humanitarian efforts by uniquely interpreting and implementing his social doctrines. However, the existing scholarship has focused substantially on coastal developments, neglecting the role of this benevolence in rural Missouri communities. By examining the philanthropic endeavors of Lucy Wortham James, both during her life and post-mortem through her endowment of …
