Adaptive Technology Catalog, Cisr Jan 2008

Adaptive Technology Catalog, Cisr

Global CWD Repository

By design, the purpose of this Adaptive Technology Catalog is to provide a resource for governments, survivor-assistance and other agencies to help victims of landmines and other explosive remnants of war (ERW) and other disabled workers get back to self-sufficiency and paid work.

Designing, developing and identifying simple and inexpensive tools and programs that assist with survivor work reintegration is a challenge with broad implications for the economic recovery of communities and nations as they emerge from conflict. The Adaptive Technology Catalog was created to offer information pertaining to both products that are readily available for use and those that …

Heavy Metal Content In Soils Under Different Wastewater Irrigation Patterns In Chihuahua, Mexico, V. M. Maldonado, H. Q. Rubio-Arias, R. Quintana, R. A. Saucedo, Melida Gutierrez, J. A. Ortega, G. V. Nevarez

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

An area near the city of Chihuahua has been traditionally irrigated with wastewater to grow forage crops. It has been hypothesized that metal levels could be found in these soils high enough to cause potential health problems to the population. The objective of this study was to determine heavy metal concentrations in different soils due to irrigation practices. Four soil types were evaluated; a soil with a past and present history of wastewater irrigation (S1), a soil with a history of wastewater irrigation until 2003 (S2), a soil with no irrigation history (S3), and a soil similar to S1 and …

Status Epilepticus In Children, Joseph M. Dooley Jan 2008

Status Epilepticus In Children, Joseph M. Dooley

Neurosciences

Status epilepticus is defined as a continuous seizure lasting for at least 30 minutes or recurrent seizures persisting for over 30 minutes, without recovery of consciousness. The estimated incidence in childhood is approximately 20 per 100,000 children per year. The incidence is higher in those under one year of age, with an incidence of approximately 50 per 100,000 per year. Among 1-4 year olds, approximately 30 per 100,000 per year will have an episode of status and in those aged 5-9 years, the incidence is approximately 10 per 100,000 per year. Those aged 10-15 years have the lowest incidence (approximately …

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the improvement in neurological deficit following late decompression and stabilization of the fractured thoracolumbar spine. METHODS: Between January 2001 and August 2004 neurological recovery in 120 thoracolumbar fractures was studied after posterior stabilization at the Hospital for Bone & Joint Surgery, Srinagar, India. There were 88 male and 32 female patients. Fall from a height, usually a tree, was the most common (90%) cause of injury. Seventy-six patients (63%) had neurologic deficit at the time of presentation. The unstable spine was fixed, between 4-18 days after trauma, by posterior short segment instrumentation (Steffee). Neurological recovery for the …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The distribution, secondary production, and calcium:tissue (Ca:tissue) ratio in relation to limno-chemical factors were studied in a freshwater limpet (Septaria lineata) population from the west bank of the River Hooghly, West Bengal, India, for 2 successive years. Total hardness, chloride, pH, and phosphate were shown to be significant in Pearson´s correlations in influencing the abundance of the limpet population. Annual production for the 2 successive years was 10.3 g m^{-2} and 9.5 g m^{-2}, respectively. The annual turnover ratios, the ratios of annual production (P) and annual standing crop (B), ´P/B´, were calculated to be 2.06 and 1.67, while annual …

This research was carried out in almond orchards (Amygdalus sp.) in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia in 2003 in order to determine the spider fauna. Among the 129 specimens collected, 21 species belonging to 16 genera and 9 families were recorded at 10 localities with more spiders in the almond orchards in these regions. Among the species, Atea sturmi (Hahn, 1831) is a new record for the araneo-fauna of Turkey. The study was the first on spider fauna in almond orchards in Turkey.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

We determined the feeding capacity of Calosoma sycophanta L. (Coleoptera: Carabidae) by feeding them the pine processionary moth (PPM), Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera: Thaumetopoeidae), under laboratory conditions. C. sycophanta is one of the most important predators of PPM larvae and pupae. Adult C. sycophanta can consume as much as 7-8 times their weight in food per day. On average, each C. sycophanta adult injured 10 PPM larvae while consuming 7 of these prey per day. The adults lived for 3-4 years. When young C. sycophanta larvae feed on 1 PPM larva, they can reach 1.4-1.6 cm in length …

The present study showed that certain properties of burrows, such as their depths, do not depend on either adult or immature stages of the insect. Food preferences of cannibalistic species of S. inexpectatus were also investigated …
