Avian influenza (AI) is a viral disease of poultry, caused by influenzavirus A, classified in the family Orthomyxoviridiae. The influenza A viruses maintained in birds are commonly referred to as avian influenza viruses (AIVs). The AIVs are antigenically, genetically, and biologically diverse, are found worldwide in birds, and infect a variety of avian species.

The Language Of Science: Vocabulary Insturction In The Inclusion Classroom, Tamara Iwasiw
Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters
Vocabulary is found in all areas of academic study. How the vocabulary is approached with regards to instruction varies widely. Through a review of the literature, multiple strategies have been outlined for use in the classroom. Some of these strategies were employed into action research using the Japanese lesson study model to determine the appropriate method for vocabulary instruction in a particular inner city high school science inclusion classroom. The results of the study were in correlation with the review of the literature where student achievement was impacted by the addition of vocabulary instruction to the regular class curriculum. Student …

The Impact Of Student Literacy On The Living Environment Regents Exam, Scott Partridge
Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters
This research study was conducted to determine the affect of reading ability on the success rates of 8th grade science students that take the New York State Regents Living Environment Exam. There is a concern that the English/Language Arts skills of current 8th grade students, not content knowledge, will limit the students' ability to be successful on the Regents level exam if it is given in 8th grade to all science students. This study administered two versions of a past Regents exam to six groups of 8th grade science students. one version of the test that was given was composed …
Drug Loading And Release From Polypeptide Multilayer Nanofilms, Yang Zhong
Drug Loading And Release From Polypeptide Multilayer Nanofilms, Yang Zhong
Doctoral Dissertations
Polypeptides, linear macromolecules, are formed from amino acid residues by linkage of peptide bonds. Proteins are polypeptides too, with more complex conformations contributing to specific functionalities. Disulfide bonds are very important to maintain the structure and functions of proteins, which will form between two cysteine (Cys) residues under oxidizing circumstance.
Cys containing polypeptides are designed and synthesized by F-moc (9-Fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl) chemistry. The number and position of Cys residues can be controlled by amino acid sequences design and following peptide synthesis, which is important to gain insights on the nature of polyelectrolyte multilayer film assembly and stability.
Both commercial and designed …

Investigating Problem Based Learning In The Science Classroom, Andrea Szozda
Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters
The level of engagement among students during problem-based learning (PBL) was investigated. PBL is a teaching strategy that provides students with real-life experiences which in tum creates enthusiasm among students and provides students with a deeper level of understanding of the content. The level of engagement was determined by a triangulation of data that included student reflections, observational data and classroom discussions. During the PBL lessons students were more actively involved in their learning and the results indicated that students were more engaged during PBL lessons than traditional lecture-based lessons.

Estrogen plays an essential role in the growth and maturation of the mammalian oocyte, and recent studies suggest that it also influences follicle formation in the neonatal ovary. In the course of studies designed to assess the effect of the estrogenic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) on mammalian oogenesis, we uncovered an estrogenic effect at an even earlier stage of oocyte development—at the onset of meiosis in the fetal ovary. Pregnant mice were treated with low, environmentally relevant doses of BPA during mid-gestation to assess the effect of BPA on the developing ovary. Oocytes from exposed female fetuses displayed gross aberrations …

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
The breeding ecology of south temperate bird species is less widely known than that of north temperate species, yet because they comprise a large portion of the world’s avian diversity, knowledge of their breeding ecology can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the geographic diversity of avian reproductive traits and life history strategies. We provide the first detailed examination of the reproductive strategies of 18 forest passerines of subtropical, northwestern Argentina. Mean clutch sizes were smaller and egg mass was greater than for north temperate birds, but differed among species and nest types, with cavity-nesters having larger clutches than …

Intraspecific Resource Partitioning By An Opportunistic Strategist, Inland Silverside Menidia Beryllina, Christopher J. Chizinski, C. G. Huber, M. Longoria, Kevin L. Pope
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Seasonal variation in prey consumption and food resource overlap was evident in an inland water body for mature male, mature female and immature inland silverside (Menidia beryllina). During the first growth phase marked by intensive somatic growth by immature inland silverside, few adults were present in the population (28% of total catch), thus minimizing intraspecific competition for food resources between juvenile and adult inland silverside. During the second growth phase by adults, few juvenile inland silverside were present (0% of total catch) in the population, again minimizing intraspecific competition for food resources between juvenile and adult inland silverside. …

Testing Ecological And Behavioral Correlates Of Nest Predation, Joseph J. Fontaine, Mireille Martel, Helen M. Markland, Alina M. Niklison, Karie L. Decker, Thomas E. Martin
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Variation in nest predation rates among bird species are assumed to reflect differences in risk that are specific to particular nest sites. Theoretical and empirical studies suggest that parental care behaviors can evolve in response to nest predation risk and thereby differ among ecological conditions that vary in inherent risk. However, parental care also can influence predation risk. Separating the effects of nest predation risk inherent to a nest site from the risk imposed by parental strategies is needed to understand the evolution of parental care. Here we identify correlations between risks inherent to nest sites, and risk associated with …

Introduction To Establishing Medical Reality: Essays In The Metaphysics And Epistemology Of Biomedical Science, Harold Kincaid, Jennifer Mckitrick
Introduction To Establishing Medical Reality: Essays In The Metaphysics And Epistemology Of Biomedical Science, Harold Kincaid, Jennifer Mckitrick
Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications
Medicine has been a very fruitful source of significant issues for philosophy over the last 30 years. The vast majority of the issues discussed have been normative—they have been problems in morality and political philosophy that now make up the field called bioethics. However, biomedical science presents many other philosophical questions that have gotten relatively little attention, particularly topics in metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of science. This volume focuses on problems in these areas as they surface in biomedical science.
Important changes in philosophy make biomedical science an especially interesting area of inquiry. Contemporary philosophy is largely naturalistic in approach—it …

The expression of high-abundance serum proteins in newly diagnosed patients with endometrial adenocarcinoma (EACa), squarnous cell cervical carcinoma (SCCa) and cervical adenocarcinorna (ACCa), relative to control female subjects, was analyzed by subjecting serum samples to 2-DE followed by image analysis of the silver-stained protein profiles. The three cohorts of cancer patients demonstrated different altered expression of serum high-abundance proteins compared to negative control women. Tl-ie expression of alpha(1)-antitrypsin, alpha(1)-B glycoprotein, cleaved high-molecular-weight kininogen (light chain) and antithrombin III were consistently altered in all the patients. However, clusterin was upregulated only in the patients with EACa, while those with SCCa and …

Genomic DNA of Blastocystis isolates released into 0.1 Triton X-100 was suitable for amplification and yielded similar results as the genomic DNA extracted with standard kit. The specific B. hominis primers (BH1: GCT TAT CTG GTT GAT CCT GCC AGT and BH2: TGA TCC TTC CGC AGG TTC ACC TAC A) successfully produced the PCR product of about 1,770 bp with all the 7 Blastocystis isolates tested. The restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns yielded by 13 out of 25 restriction endonucleases showed that the 7 isolates could be grouped into 4 subgroups: subgroup-1 consisted of isolate C; subgroup-2 of …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) has become increasingly common in soybean throughout the north-central region of the United States. Yield loss assessments on southern soybean germplasm have reported reductions ranging from 3 to 52%. Currently, no soybean cultivars have been identified with resistance to BPMV. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of BPMV infection on soybean cultivars representing a broad range of northern soybean germplasm by comparing inoculated and noninoculated soybean plants in paired row studies. In all, 30 and 24 cultivars were evaluated in Nebraska (NE) in which soybean plants were inoculated at the V3 …
