Objectives . Variable regions of immunoglobulin molecule (Ig) on B-cell lymphoma constitute tumor specific antigenic determinants collectively designated as idiotype (Id). Idiotypic determinants are nominally antigenic in tumor bearing hosts. Mycobacterial heat shock protein 70 (mycHSP70) is known for its ability as immunoadjuvant to activate anigen-presenting cells such as dendritic cells (DCs) through a toll-like receptor, TLR4. The objective of this study is to utilize mycHSP70 to enhance immunogenicity of two different B-lymphoma specific idiotopes. We accomplished this by using mycHSP70 fused to idiotypes of two tumors A20 and 2C3 as recombinant protein vaccine. Methods . By using standard molecular …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Signal transduction involves a signal at the cell's surface being transmitted internally via a chain of molecules to generate an adequate response. Signaling malfunctions are responsible for many human diseases. Signaling mechanisms are conserved in evolution but complexity is brought about by modifications, regulation, multiple-pathways, cross talk between pathways etc. Signaling molecules conserved through evolution are considered basic and indispensable. The stathmin family (Stathmin, SCG10 etc.) belongs to this class of molecules. Stathmin (also known as oncoprotein 18, prosolin, leukemia-associated phosphoprotein 18 and others) is a highly conserved, phosphorylated cytosolic protein with apparent ubiquitous expression. Stathmin protein is encoded by …

There are collected materials on morphology, reproduction rate, and mortality of Dschiggetajs Equus h. hemionus between 2001 and 2006 in the South Gobi of Mongolia. It were found 794 skeletons of wild asses, 95% of these were pouched, ⅔ of them in winter coat. Pouching was also located in the protected areas of this region. The main living resources of Equus hemionus are registered in the South eastern Gobi. For the first time statistical data on morphology measurements of body length, tail and tuft, ear length, and hoofs are given. There are no significant differences between the sexes. The reproduction …

The onager, Equus hemionus onager, an Asiatic wild ass endemic to Iran, is categorized as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Its biology and conservation requirements are poorly documented. We report some observations made in 1997 and 2000 on the behavior and ecology of the two remaining populations, located in the Touran Protected Area and the Bahram-e-Goor Reserve. Recent population counts by the Department of Environment of Iran (471 in the Protected Area, and 96 in the Reserve) are markedly lower than the count of 600-770 made in the 1970s in the Touran Protected Area. We observed social …

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298
The Syrian wild ass (Equus hemionus hemippus) lived in Israel in historic times until the 1930s, when it disappeared from the entire Middle East region. Khulans from other subspecies (E. h. onager - six individulas and E. h. kulan - five individuals) were brought to Israel from European zoos during 1968-69 (the authors of project considered that onager and kulan were the same subspecies) and these animals bred together in the semi-captivity conditions of the Haibar Yotvata Reserve. Later, during a 12-year period from 1982 through 1993, six groups totalling 38 khulans (17 males and 21 females) …

In this paper are presented the accounts of 13 identified bat species from a total of 628 captured specimens from 32 locations in Mongolia during three field expeditions. These species accounts include taxonomical, morphological, and ecological data resulting from observations and further analyses. As a result of this work the distribution of some bat species in Mongolia can be drawn in more detail. For instance, Vespertilio murinus is much wider distributed and abundant than the former records indicate. The Plecotus species were clearly identified by genetic analyses combined with morphological characteristics. Moreover, the second record for Eptesicus serotinus and the …

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298
Two distinct life history traits are described from the genus Ochotona, the group of “burrowing” species exhibiting high but fluctuating population densities and the “non-burrowing” species exhibiting relatively stable low population densities. The life history traits are linked to ecosystem dynamics with climatically variable steppe environments hosting “burrowing” species and relatively stable mountainous and rocky habitats hosting “non-burrowing” species. There are few intermediate species, living in both steppe and rocky environments. This study presents survival rates, reproductive rates and a tentative model of population dynamics for Ochotona pallasi pricei, an intermediate species with respect to habitat preference. We …

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298
The history of the discovery and the exploration of the hemione populations (Equus hemionus PALLAS) from Central Asia (Mongolia, northwest China, northeast Tibet, Kazakhstan, and Russian Siberia) from the 13th century to approximately 1950 are compiled with the aim to provide materials for a taxonomic and population genetic revision of the dziggetais. Data on their phenotypic differentiation, historical distribution status, and their husbandry history in European zoological gardens, are reviewed, as is the gradual emergence of concepts of how to identify and to classify these populations. Hemiones were an important historical case in the discussion of how to represent …

Not that long ago most Nebraska communities were full of large American elms. Their tall, arching habit, fast growth and adaptability to a wide range of soil conditions made them a popular choice for planting in towns from Falls City to Chadron and all points in between. Because of its wide-spreading habit, American elm was especially popular for planting along streets. Often the canopies of individual trees met over the middle of the street, creating a ceiling of green that would sometimes stretch for blocks at a time. Unfortunately Dutch elm disease raced across the state in the 1960s and …

Book Review: The Nature Of The Farm: Contracts, Risk, And Organization In Agriculture By Douglas W. Allen And Dean Lueck, Azzeddine Azzam
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
The conventional wisdom about the future of family farming in North America is that it is a bleak one. Like any other family firms, family farms are not immune to industrialization and eventually all stages of food production will be in the hands of large corporations. The poultry industry has become the poster-industry for the corporate take-over of food production and the guide to what is in store for the rest of agriculture. That, among other theories about organizational features of North American agriculture, is closely examined by Allen and Lueck’s Nature of the Farm—Contracts, Risk, and Organization in Agriculture. …

A Moral Imperative: The Human Rights Implications Of Climate Change, Sara C. Aminzadeh
UC Law SF International Law Review
Even conservative forecasts of climate change predict dramatic effects to environments, economies, and people around the world. Though the causal link between climate change and human rights is not as readily apparent as with other environmental issues, climate change impacts public health, food security, infrastructures, and natural resources. For the Inuit living in the rapidly melting Arctic, and citizens of small island developing states facing sea level rise, climate change has become a matter of human rights. This note explores the effect of climate change on human rights, such as the right to life and the right to health, as …

On 12 December 1917, Carrie Chapman Catt, a long-time leader of the worldwide woman suffrage movement, wrote to Henry Fairfield Osborn, director of the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Catt inquired whether Osborn would sign a petition in support of the pending suffrage amendment which was intended to include the signatures of "1000 men whose names we have chosen on account of quality and influence."' Given Osborn's standing in academic, scientific, and political circles, he was a likely enough figure for Catt to turn to in her strategy of developing and publicizing elite support for the federal …

The United States ranks among the top four sugar producers worldwide, and sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) plays a major role in the sweetener industry. Sugar beet was planted on approximately 553,100 ha (1.37 million acres) in 2006 (33). The greatest volume of production occurs in the Red River Valley (RRV) of Minnesota and North Dakota and in southern Minnesota. In 2005, this region planted 302,000 ha (746,000 acres) of sugar beet, which accounted for over half of the hectares sown (58%) and metric tons of roots produced (51%) in the United States (33); total economic impact of the …

No-Choice Preference Of Cerotoma Trifurcata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) To Potential Host Plants Of Bean Pod Mottle Virus (Comoviridae) In Iowa, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Marlin E. Rice, John H. Hill
Panhandle Research and Extension Center
To better understand the naturally occurring host range of Bean pod mottle virus (family Comoviridae, genus Comovirus, BPMV) and its principal vector Cerotoma trifurcata (Förster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), 18 field-collected perennial plant species were tested for the presence of BPMV. By using no-choice assays, we determined the preference of these plants by bean leaf beetle, by measuring their level of herbivory relative to soybean, Glycine max (L.). New food hosts for adult bean leaf beetles include Lespedeza capitata (Michaux), Lotus corniculatus L., Trifolium alexandrinum L., Trifolium ambiguum Bieberstein, and Trifolium incarnatum L. Desmodium illinoense Gray is discovered as a …

The present invention permits identification of biological materials following recovery of DNA using standard techniques by comparing a mathematical characterization of the unknown sequence with the mathematical characterization of DNA sequences of known genera and species. The clinical identification of infectious organisms is required for accurate diagnosis and selection of antimicrobial therapeutics. The invention allows an ab initio approach with the potential for rapid identification of biological materials of unknown origin. The approach provides for identification and classification of emergent or new organisms without previous phenotypic identification. The technique may also be used in monitoring situations where the need exists …

A process was developed for production of a candidate vaccine antigen, recombinant C-terminal heavy chain fragment of the botulinum neurotoxin serotype E, rBoNTE(Hc)in Pichia pastoris. P. pastoris strain GS115 was transformed with the rBoNTE(Hc) gene inserted into pHILD4 Escherichia coli—P. pastoris shuttle plasmid. The clone was characterized for genetic stability, copy number, and BoNTE(Hc) sequence. Expression of rBoNTE(Hc) from the Mut+ HIS4 clone was confirmed in the shake-flask, prior to developing a fed-batch fermentation process at 5 and 19 L scale. The fermentation process consists of a glycerol growth phase in …

So far the social system of Mongolian wild asses is non-uniformly interpreted. The authors describe their own observations from different parts of Mongolia and review data from available publications. The arguments support a territorial social system, which agrees with the social system of all other wild asses in Asia and Africa.

The birth of a wild ass was completely described and photographed in the wild for the first time. It happened in the daytime, in the open desert, and in the vicinity of other wild asses. The mother isolated her foal afterwards for an entire day. After birthing she drove away her male yearling, which did not join her any longer from this moment on.
