¿La Raza Latina?: Multiracial Ambivalence, Color Denial, And The Emergence Of A Tri-Ethnic Jurisprudence At The End Of The 20th Century, Tom I. Romero Jan 2007

¿La Raza Latina?: Multiracial Ambivalence, Color Denial, And The Emergence Of A Tri-Ethnic Jurisprudence At The End Of The 20th Century, Tom I. Romero

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This article is a recent legal history concerning the complicated, inconsistent, and dramatic transformation in the jurisprudential meaning and legal consequence of race, color and ethnic categories in the last decades of the 20th century. Linking school desegregation, bilingual education, and affirmative action jurisprudence to the dramatic growth of the nation's Latina/o community in the second half of the 20th century, the article documents the reasons behind the inability of American law to understand conceptually the idea of a Latino race.

In particular, the article argues that three United States Supreme Court equality of education cases - Keyes v. School …

Development Of A Rivpacs-Type Predictive Model For Bioassessment Of Wadeable Streams In Wyoming, Hargett E. G., J. R. Zumberge, Charles P. Hawkins, J. R. Olson

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

RIVPACS models produce a community-level measure of biological condition known as O/E, which is derived from a comparison of the observed (O) biota with those expected (E) to occur in the absence of anthropogenic stress. We used benthic macroinvertebrate and environmental data collected at 925 stream monitoring stations, from 1993 to 2001, to develop, validate, and apply a RIVPACS model to assess the biological condition of wadeable streams in Wyoming. From this dataset, 296 samples were identified as reference, 157 of which were used to calibrate the model, 46 to validate it, and 93 to examine temporal variability in reference …

Impact Of The 25th Street Combined Sewer Overflow On The Ohio River, Travis M. Bailey Jan 2007

Impact Of The 25th Street Combined Sewer Overflow On The Ohio River, Travis M. Bailey

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The 25th Street Combined Sewer Overflow was analyzed for total coliforms, Escherichia coli, antibiotic-resistant coliforms and E. coli, and routine water chemistry. The objectives of this study were to enumerate antibiotic resistant bacteria near a CSO, determine the impact of a small quantity CSO on Ohio River water quality during a storm event, and to correlate antibiotic resistance with conventional water quality measurements. The data indicate that resistant bacteria exist in both river water and wastewater, and that this CSO can not be identified as a source of resistant strains. Rain events do cause a detectable and transient change in …

Effects Of Curcumin On Retinal Oxidative Stress And Inflammation In Diabetes, Renu A. Kowluru, Mamta Kanwar

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Oxidative stress and inflammation are implicated in the pathogenesis of retinopathy in diabetes. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of curcumin, a polyphenol with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, on diabetes-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in the retina of rats.

Methods

A group of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats received powdered diet supplemented with 0.05% curcumin (w/w), and another group received diet without curcumin. The diets were initiated soon after induction of diabetes, and the rats were sacrificed 6 weeks after induction of diabetes. The retina was used to quantify oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory markers.

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

The emergence of high throughput genome sequencing facilities and powerful high performance bioinformatic tools has highlighted hitherto unexpected wide occurrence of globins in the three kingdoms of life. In silico analysis of the genome of C. elegans identified 33 putative globin genes. It remains a mystery why this tiny animal might need so many globins. As an inroad to understanding this complexity we initiated a structural and functional analysis of the globin family in C. elegans.

Results

All 33 C. elegans putative globin genes are transcribed. The translated sequences have the essential signatures of single domain bona fide …

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Several transitions that a woman experiences prenatally may influence her desire or ability to discontinue smoking. This study explores the role of smoking for young, Appalachian, nulliparous pregnant women and their plans for smoking during their pregnancies.

Results

The reports of women and their male partners were taken from baseline interviews conducted during the first trimester of pregnancy. Cigarette smoking appeared to be more than an isolated addictive activity; rather, smoking was interwoven in women's social and personal realms, often changing as their perceptions of self changed. Women and their partners who continued to smoke appeared to be …

Abstract

Background

Despite significant advancement in breast cancer therapy, there is a great need for a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in breast carcinogenesis and progression, as well as of the role of epigenetic contributions from stromal cells in mammary tumorigenesis. In this study, we isolated and characterized murine mammary tumor-derived epithelial and myofibroblast cell lines, and investigated the in vitro and in vivo effect of cellular soluble factors produced by the epithelial cell line on tumor cells.

Methods

Morphology, immunophenotype, cytogenetics, invasiveness, and tumorigenicity of epithelial (LM-234ep) and myofibroblast (LM-234mf) cell lines isolated from two murine mammary adenocarcinomas …

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

In multiple sclerosis, inflammatory cells are found in both active and chronic lesions, and it is increasingly clear that cytokines are involved directly and indirectly in both formation and inhibition of lesions. We propose that cytokine mixtures typical of Th1 or Th2 lymphocytes, or monocyte/macrophages each induce unique molecular changes in glial cells.

Methods

To examine changes in gene expression that might occur in glial cells exposed to the secreted products of immune cells, we have used gene array analysis to assess the early effects of different cytokine mixtures on mixed CNS glia in culture. We compared the …

Age-Related Dgc Structure And Function In The F344/N X Bn Rat Heart, Sunil K. Kakarla Jan 2007

Age-Related Dgc Structure And Function In The F344/N X Bn Rat Heart, Sunil K. Kakarla

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Recent data has suggested that disruption of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC) may be involved in mediating the progression of cardiac hypertrophy and failure. Here we examined the regulation of DGC proteins in the hearts of adult (6 months), aged (30 months), and very aged (36 months) F344/N X BN rats . Compared to adult animals, the content of α- and β-dystroglycan were 6.93 ± 5.16% and 58.36 ± 3.64% higher, respectively (P < 0.05) in very aged animals. Immunoblotting and immunhistochemical analysis suggested that aging appeared to diminish alpha-sarcoglycan, beta-sarcoglycan and delta-sarcoglycan content by 13.89 ± 3.1%,15.8 ± 2.8% and 18.63 ± 3.04%, respectively (P < 0.05). These alterations in the DGC occurred coincident with age- associated alterations in cytoplasmic anti-rat IgG immunoreactivity, TUNEL positive nuclei, alpha-fodrin cleavage, indices of caspase-3 activation and diminished AKT phosphoryation (Ser 308). Taken together, these data suggest that aging alters cardiac DGC structure and function.

Marketplace Plants Used In Ceremonial Cleansing Among Andean Qechuans Of Ecuador, Sushma Shrestha

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Ceremonial cleansing plays a vital role in indigenous societies where ‘folk illnesses’ such as susto (fright) are common. Indigenous Andean Qechuans commonly use cleansing plants to treat susto, and related ‘folk illnesses’.The purpose of this study was to characterize and compare market plants and to define methods and knowledge used in ceremonial cleansing among Ecuadorian Qechuans. Interviews were conducted with 22 vendors at 13 marketplaces. Regression Analysis (RA) determined preferentially selected plant families and residual value of RA determined the highest and lowest preferentially selected plant families.Hierarchical cluster analysis and coefficient of similarity demonstrated the relationship between marketplaces and cleansing …

New Microanatomical Characters For Scorpion Taxonomy (Arachnida: Scorpiones), Michael Brewer Jan 2007

New Microanatomical Characters For Scorpion Taxonomy (Arachnida: Scorpiones), Michael Brewer

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Morphological characters used in scorpion systematics are limited to a few reliable structures. The most recent high-level, comprehensive revision of scorpion phylogeny, 38 of the 105 morphological characters were based on trichobothria – socketed mechanosensory seta (Soleglad & Fet, 2003). Other microstructures such as granules, setae, spines, etc. have been found in scorpions but their use for taxonomy was limited. In an effort to better understand the complex relationships among these ancient but similar looking animals, we attempted to first locate new microstructures and then assess their reliability and variability thus determining the levels at which they are diagnostic. The …
