Isolation Of Glossina Typanolysis/Trypanoglutinin And Assessment Of Their Use In The Interruption Of Trypanosome Differentiation, Mahamat Hassan Abakar

All PhD Dissertations

Midgut trypanolysin from Glossina morsitans morsitans was isolated by a combination of an anion-exchange and gel permeation chromatography. The trypanolysin activity was recovered in the bound fraction. The native molecular weight of trypanolysin was determined -669kDa. Analysis oftrypanolysin by SDS-PAGE recovered a single sub-unit ofMr-14kDa. The induction of trypanolysin activity by bloodmeal increased gradually reaching a peak at 72-120 h after the bloodmeal, and then decreased rapidly, with only 25% of the peak activity remaining after 192 h. Midgut homogenates from twice-fed G. m. morsitans had the highest trypanolysin activity against bloodstream-form trypanosomes followed by those once-fed and unfed. Trypanolysin …

Studies On Desmodium Species For The Allelochemicals Involved In Striga Suppression, Salome Muthoni Guchu Jan 2007

Studies On Desmodium Species For The Allelochemicals Involved In Striga Suppression, Salome Muthoni Guchu

All PhD Dissertations

The fodder legumes Desmodium uncinatum and D. intortum suppress the growth of Striga hermonthica (witch-weed) via an allelopathic mechanism that involves Striga germination stimulants and post-germination growth inhibitors. In this study, the root extracts (dichloromethane, acetone and methanol) from the two Desmodium species were investigated for Striga germination stimulation and post-germination radicle growth inhibition activities. The less polar extract (dichloromethane) showed Striga germination stimulation activity of over 40% at 10 ppm, but did not show any post-germination radicle growth inhibition at the same concentration. On the other hand, the polar extracts (acetone and methanol) were found to exhibit post-germination radicle …

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

In this article a study of children’s sport participation in Canada is presented, examining both children’s participation in organized sport (with a coach or instructor) and informal sport (without a coach or instructor). This was done using a national sample survey. The results indicate that, for participation in organized sport, household income was the strongest predictor variable, followed by parent’s education, gender, regional differences, and age of the child. In informal sport, gender was the strongest predictor variable, followed by regional differences, household income, age of the child, and parent’s education. The findings are discussed in terms of the implications …

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The Use of Expert Search Warrants in the Criminal Investigation of Acquaintance Molestation Child sexual abuse is a critical social problem throughout the U.S. and the world. Often, a competent and thorough investigation can substantiate or discredit an allegation and notably support a subsequent prosecution of a substantiated case. A manual was created to assist law enforcement detectives who investigate allegations of child sex abuse. The investigative process includes: (a) forensic interviews of child victims, (b) collection of corroborative evidence, (c) analysis of offender characteristics and typologies, (d) offender interviews, and (e) search warrants to include expert search warrants.

On The Vorticity Cycle Of The Loop Current, A. Lugo-Fernández, A. Badan Jan 2007

On The Vorticity Cycle Of The Loop Current, A. Lugo-Fernández, A. Badan

Journal of Marine Research

The inrushing/retraction behavior of the Loop Current (LC) in the eastern Gulf of Mexico can be represented by a recurrent cycle of vorticity input/output with a time scale of 0 to 16 months. This cycle is brought about as a balance between the accumulation of absolute vorticity in the LC and deep advection of vorticity to the Caribbean Sea. The vorticity time scale is directly proportional to the change in circulation around the LC and 2πH/Q0(f0 + ζ0); where H (∼800 m) is the thickness of the LC, Q0 is …

The Enso Signature In Sea-Surface Temperature In The Gulf Of California, Hugo Herrera-Cervantes, Daniel B. Lluch-Cota, Salvador E. Lluch-Cota, Guillermo Gutiérrez-De-Velasco S Jan 2007

The Enso Signature In Sea-Surface Temperature In The Gulf Of California, Hugo Herrera-Cervantes, Daniel B. Lluch-Cota, Salvador E. Lluch-Cota, Guillermo Gutiérrez-De-Velasco S

Journal of Marine Research

We analyzed 21 years of sea-surface temperature satellite images to explore the spatial signature of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation signal in the Gulf of California. We used empirical orthogonal function analysis to extract the principal mode of the nonseasonal sea-surface temperature variability and compared it to the spatial signature of the Southern Oscillation Index. The first mode accounted for 80% of nonseasonal variability and its amplitude time series was significantly correlated to the Southern Oscillation Index (r = −0.58,P < 0.01). The amplitude of this mode and its statistical relation to the El Niño is stronger during winter, which suggests that forcing of sea-surface temperature variability occurs through the disruption of the wind-driven upwelling corridor along the eastern coast due to El Niño-related atmospheric teleconnections. We also examined weekly time series of coastal sea-surface temperature coastal anomalies along the coast of North America, including the interior of the Gulf of California, during the strong 1997–98 El Niño. We found a poleward propagating signal that reached the mouth of the Gulf of California at the end of spring and continued its poleward propagation along the west coast of the peninsula slightly delayed; it also resulted in warming inside the Gulf of California. This observation may provide an explanation for the variable extension of the El Niño signature along the Pacific coast of North America.

Water Column Stability And Spring Bloom Dynamics In The Gulf Of Alaska, Stephanie A. Henson Jan 2007

Water Column Stability And Spring Bloom Dynamics In The Gulf Of Alaska, Stephanie A. Henson

Journal of Marine Research

The initiation of the Gulf of Alaska phytoplankton spring bloom is light limited, and therefore the onset of stratification is critical to primary productivity. A stability ratio, which represents the balance between mixing (tide and wind) and buoyancy (heat and freshwater) processes, is defined. When buoyancy dominates over mixing, stratification is possible. Use of model- and satellite-derived data allows maps of the spatial and temporal development of stratification to be constructed. Spatial variability in the dominant forcing components is also mapped. The onset of water column stability is closely linked to the timing of the phytoplankton spring bloom. Consideration of …

Moistened Seeds Increase Rodent Trap Success, Michael W. Sears, John C. Tull Jan 2007

Moistened Seeds Increase Rodent Trap Success, Michael W. Sears, John C. Tull

Publications

Seed moisture has been shown to influence the rates of seed cache removal by rodents. Although the precise mechanism is not known, this knowledge might prove useful in field applications. We examined whether moistened bait would increase trap success in desert rodent populations. We placed traps 15 m apart in grids within a 500-ha study area and randomly baited traps with either dry or moistened seeds. We found that traps baited with moistened seeds had 34.9% higher success than traps baited with dry seeds (n = 190, Χ2 = 5.389, df = 1, P = 0.020). Our results …

Wind Damage And Salinity Effects Of Hurricanes Katrina And Rita On Coastal Baldcypress Forests Of Louisiana, William Conner, Thomas W. Doyle, Richard H. Day, Ken W. Krauss, Christopher M. Swarzenski Jan 2007

Wind Damage And Salinity Effects Of Hurricanes Katrina And Rita On Coastal Baldcypress Forests Of Louisiana, William Conner, Thomas W. Doyle, Richard H. Day, Ken W. Krauss, Christopher M. Swarzenski

Publications

The frequency of hurricane landfall in a given coastal stretch may play a more important role in the ecology of coastal forests than previously thought because of direct and indirect impacts of fallen trees and the introduction of salt water that lingers long after the storm passes. Findings show that surge events can inundate interior freshwater forests many miles from the coast and elevate soil salinities twofold to threefold. These elevated salinities may contribute to delayed mortality of certain tree species and set the stage for eventual forest decline and dieback.

Publications

The natural ecosystems of coastal Louisiana reflect the underlying geomorphic processes responsible for their formation. The majority of Louisiana's wetland forests are found in the lower reaches of the Mississipp Alluvial Valley and the Deltaic Plain. The sediments, water, and energy of the Mississippi River have shaped the Deltaic Plain as natural deltas have been formed and abandoned over the last 5,000 years (Coleman et al. 1998). During the regressive or constructional phase of the delta cycle, the system is dominated by freshwater riverine inputs with the formation of corresponding freshwater marshes and swamps, which then deteriorate during the marine-dominated …

A Robust Measure Of Correlation Between Two Genes On A Microarray, Johanna S. Hardin, Aya Mitani '06, Leanne Hicks, Brian Vankoten

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Background

The underlying goal of microarray experiments is to identify gene expression patterns across different experimental conditions. Genes that are contained in a particular pathway or that respond similarly to experimental conditions could be co-expressed and show similar patterns of expression on a microarray. Using any of a variety of clustering methods or gene network analyses we can partition genes of interest into groups, clusters, or modules based on measures of similarity. Typically, Pearson correlation is used to measure distance (or similarity) before implementing a clustering algorithm. Pearson correlation is quite susceptible to outliers, however, an unfortunate characteristic when dealing …

Placing The Academy: Essays On Landscape, Work, And Identity, Jennifer Sinor, Rona Kaufman

All USU Press Publications

Twenty-one writers answer the call for literature that addresses who we are by understanding where we are--where, for each of them, being in some way part of academia. In personal essays, they imaginatively delineate and engage the diverse, occasionally unexpected play of place in shaping them, writers and teachers in varied environments, with unique experiences and distinctive world views, and reconfiguring for them conjunctions of identity and setting, here, there, everywhere, and in between.

Improving The Effectiveness Of Interventions To Balance Conservation And Development: A Conceptual Framework, S. Garnett, J. Sayer, Johan T. Du Toit Jan 2007

Improving The Effectiveness Of Interventions To Balance Conservation And Development: A Conceptual Framework, S. Garnett, J. Sayer, Johan T. Du Toit

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

There are numerous case studies around the world describing integrated conservation and development projects (ICDPs). Recently some localized syntheses have been published that use sophisticated statistics to identify patterns and causal linkages, but no attempt has yet been made to draw together lessons from across the globe. This paper is an attempt to provide a framework for such an analysis. A set of lessons is proposed for improving the prospects of ICDPs by giving consideration to each of the five capitals: natural, social, human, built, and financial. The language of ICDPs has been adopted by development agencies of all persuasions. …

A Meta-Baci Approach Forevaluating Management Intervention On Chronic Wasting Disease In Mule Deer, Mary M. Conner, Michael W. Miller, Michael Ryan Ebinger, Kenneth P. Burnham

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Advances in acquiring and analyzing the spatial attributes of data have greatlyenhanced the potential utility of wildlife disease surveillance data for addressing problems ofecological or economic importance. We present an approach for using wildlife diseasesurveillance data to identify areas for (or of ) intervention, to spatially delineate pairedtreatment and control areas, and then to analyze these nonrandomly selected sites in a meta-analysis framework via before–after–control–impact (BACI) estimates of effect size. We applythese methods to evaluate the effectiveness of attempts to reduce chronic wasting disease(CWD) prevalence through intensive localized culling of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus)innorth-central Colorado, USA. Areas where surveillance data …

Managing Dynamic Complexity: Opportunities For Systems Thinking In Graduate Management Education, Vijay R. Kannan, J. B. Atwater, Alan A. Stephens

Management Faculty Publications

Competition and the time pressure to respond are adding to the challenges faced by business leaders. Managers are increasingly faced with decision-making scenarios characterised by significant dynamic complexity. While Systems Thinking (ST) tools exist to help prepare managers deal with dynamic complexity, it is not clear whether managers are in fact aware of or incorporating ST in making complex decisions. Results of a survey of faculty at the leading graduate schools of management in the USA suggest that opportunities exist to expand the awareness of ST both among faculty and the managers they are preparing. Moreover, they demonstrate a need …

Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Foraging Behavior, D. Craig Rudolph, Richard N. Conner, Richard R. Schaefer, Nancy E. Koerth

Faculty Publications

We studied Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) to examine the effect of status and gender on foraging behavior. Foraging behavior of breeding pairs extended beyond separation by foraging height to include zones (bole, trunk in crown, primary limb, secondary limb) of the tree used and foraging methods (scaling, probing, excavating). Helper males and juvenile females maintained partial spatial separation from breeding adults. Helper males maintained spatial separation from breeding adults by exploiting limbs within tree crowns in both longleaf (Pinus palustris) and loblolly-shortleaf (P. taeda, P. echinata) pine forests, but also increased use of boles in loblolly-shortleaf pine in concert with …

Erythropoietin Improves Skeletal Muscle Microcirculation And Tissue Bioenergetics In A Mouse Sepsis Model, Raymod Kao, Anargyros Xenocostas, Tao Rui, Weixiong Huang, James Rose, Claudio M. Martin

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Introduction The relationship between oxygen delivery and consumption in sepsis is impaired, suggesting a microcirculatory perfusion defect. Recombinant human erythropoietin ( rHuEPO) regulates erythropoiesis and also exerts complex actions promoting the maintenance of homeostasis of the organism under stress. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that rHuEPO could improve skeletal muscle capillary perfusion and tissue oxygenation in sepsis. Methods Septic mice in three experiments received rHu-EPO 400 U/kg subcutaneously 18 hours after cecal ligation and perforation ( CLP). The first experiment measured the acute effects of rHuEPO on hemodynamics, blood counts, and arterial lactate level. The …
