Mouse Preimplantation Embryo Responses To Culture Medium Osmolarity Include Increased Expression Of Ccm2 And P38 Mapk Activation., Barry Fong, Patricia H Watson, Andrew J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

BACKGROUND: Mechanisms that confer an ability to respond positively to environmental osmolarity are fundamental to ensuring embryo survival during the preimplantation period. Activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) occurs following exposure to hyperosmotic treatment. Recently, a novel scaffolding protein called Osmosensing Scaffold for MEKK3 (OSM) was linked to p38 MAPK activation in response to sorbitol-induced hypertonicity. The human ortholog of OSM is cerebral cavernous malformation 2 (CCM2). The present study was conducted to investigate whether CCM2 is expressed during mouse preimplantation development and to determine whether this scaffolding protein is associated with p38 MAPK activation following exposure of preimplantation …

Patterns Of Prejudice: Social Exclusion And Racial Demarcation In Professional Accountancy In Kenya, S. Sian Jan 2007

Patterns Of Prejudice: Social Exclusion And Racial Demarcation In Professional Accountancy In Kenya, S. Sian

Accounting Historians Journal

Racial demarcation and social exclusion were common features in the organization of racially diverse colonial societies. British settlement in colonial Kenya and the import of immigrant workers resulted in the creation of a hierarchical society in which the Europeans enjoyed privileges to the exclusion of the immigrant Asians and the indigenous Africans. This study sets out to show how changes in the organization of this society and commonly held prejudices within it were reflected and even amplified in the organization of the accountancy profession. Drawing from archival and oral history data, the study traces the patterns of participation in accountancy …

Educational Factors Influencing The Self-Efficacy Of New Graduate Nurses For Professional Competencies During The Transition To Registered Nurse, Erika Cheung Jan 2007

Educational Factors Influencing The Self-Efficacy Of New Graduate Nurses For Professional Competencies During The Transition To Registered Nurse, Erika Cheung

Digitized Theses

Problem: New graduate nurses (NGNs) are often considered the solution to the global

nursing shortage. However, researchers are reporting an alarming new trend; NGNs are leaving the profession (Duchscher & Cowin, 2004; Sochalski, 2002). They are unprepared to work in the ‘real world’, even after successfully graduating from a nursing program.

Aim: This study examined the relationship between each of four educational factors (biological science courses, clinical practicum in undergraduate education; orientation/training provided by the employing hospital; post-registration preceptorship) and NGNs’ self-efficacy (confidence) for professional competencies as they transition to the role o f registered nurse.

Methods: Based on Bandura’s …

Are There Individual And/Or Roost Signatures In The Echolocation Calls Of Wild Big Brown Bats (Eptesicus Fuscus)?, Elisabeth K. Van Stam

Digitized Theses

Unique individual vocal signatures are widespread among animals living in colonies such as the maternity roosts of Eptesicusfuscus. Such individual signatures have been identified in the echolocation calls of E. fuscus in the laboratory, but have not been demonstrated in the wild. By recording known wild E. fuscus as they emerged from their roosts at dusk, I tested the hypothesis that individual and/or roost signatures exist in the echolocation calls of wild E. fuscus. Analyses of calls of 176 individuals recorded at six different locations indicate that temporal and spectral features appear to contain sufficient variation to identify both roost …

Bracteoles In Cra Taegus (Rosaceae), Kenneth A. Dvorsky

Digitized Theses

Inflorescence bracteoles of Crataegus (Rosaceae) were investigated with the following objectives: i) to determine the taxonomie significance of bracteoles in Crataegus; and ii) to perform a pilot study on the functions of Crataegus bracteoles. The former was accomplished by a morphometric analysis using 25 bracteole characters from 75 species of Crataegus and 3 outgroup taxa. The latter was accomplished by experiments and observations on bracteole-ant interactions, exudate collection and analysis, and cell organelle staining. These studies revealed: (1) two significantly different bracteole types occur, a symmetric kind found in all species and an asymmetric kind found only in Asiatic species; …

Cloning And Expression Of Multidrug Resistance Genes In The Cabbage Looper Moth, Trichoplusia Ni, Olivia D’Souza Jan 2007

Cloning And Expression Of Multidrug Resistance Genes In The Cabbage Looper Moth, Trichoplusia Ni, Olivia D’Souza

Digitized Theses

Three genes encoding multidrug resistance proteins were identified in Trichoplusia ni larvae, named trnMDRl, trnMDR2 and trnMDR3. Their open reading frames were sequenced, and the translated sequences were compared to each other as well as to multidrug resistance proteins from other species. Quantification of their expression in various tissues of caterpillars fed on either artificial diet or organically- grown cabbage revealed upregulation of trnMDRl in Malpighian tubules, integument and fat body, trnMDR2 in fat body and trnMDR3 in brain in response to the plant diet. Sf9 cells stably transformed with either trnMDRl or trnMDR3 were used to assay MDR protein …

Causal Pathways For Small For Gestational Age Birth, Shannon E. Cartier Jan 2007

Causal Pathways For Small For Gestational Age Birth, Shannon E. Cartier

Digitized Theses

Background: Small for Gestational Age (SGA) confers increased risk to the infant, and causal pathways are poorly understood. Objective: To develop and test a conceptual model for SGA, allowing us to distinguish causal pathways. Methods: This investigation used data on 2356 women from the “Prenatal Health Project” cohort. Associations between prenatal variables and SGA, both severe (<3rd percentile) and moderate (3rd-10 percentile) were investigated using multinomial logistic regression models. Variables were entered according to our conceptual framework. Variable entry that attenuated beta values by >10% indicated these variables might act along the same pathway. Results: The final models illustrated multiple pathways associated with SGA. Different pathways were associated with moderate or severe SGA. Smoking and preeclampsia related to separate pathways both associated with severe SGA. Gestational hypertension …

Cellular Basis For Stem Cell Mediated Regeneration Of Damaged Myocardium In A Canine Model For Myocardial Infarct, Caroline N. Culshaw Jan 2007

Cellular Basis For Stem Cell Mediated Regeneration Of Damaged Myocardium In A Canine Model For Myocardial Infarct, Caroline N. Culshaw

Digitized Theses

Heart failure from myocardial infarct (MI) is the leading cause of death in North America. While stem cell therapy for MI has been examined in many animal models and in clinical triais, the ability of stem cells to regenerate damaged myocardium is controversial. I have examined the ability of bone marrow and skeletal muscle derived stem cells to differentiate into cardiac and skeletal muscle following injection into infarcted dog hearts. Immunofluorescent co-localization of myosin heavy chain (MyHC) and the fluorescent cell marker PHK26 demonstrated that, while injected cells could be detected at injection sites, they did not express cardiac or …

Controlled Synthesis Of Carbon Nanotubes By Chemical Vapor Deposition On Silicon And Carbon Substrates, David Arato Jan 2007

Controlled Synthesis Of Carbon Nanotubes By Chemical Vapor Deposition On Silicon And Carbon Substrates, David Arato

Digitized Theses

Nanotechnology and nanomaterials have recently become a fast-growing area of research and engineering that are predicted to revolutionize many materials and technologies that we use in everyday life. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), as one of the key elements in nanotechnology, are a class of new and one-dimensional nanomaterials with unique structures and properties for various potential applications from nanoelectronics to nanocomposite materials. The key challenge for the implementation of carbon nanotubes into advanced technologies is the control of their synthesis, properties and morphologies. There are several synthesis methods that can be used to control the growth of carbon nanotubes, but the …

Ecophysiology Of The Monarch Butterfly (Dana Us Plexippus L.) Spring Migration (Spine Title: Ecophysiology Of The Monarch Butterfly), David Lagace Jan 2007

Ecophysiology Of The Monarch Butterfly (Dana Us Plexippus L.) Spring Migration (Spine Title: Ecophysiology Of The Monarch Butterfly), David Lagace

Digitized Theses

In insects, migration and reproduction are proposed as alternative strategies, with both being regulated by juvenile hormone (JH). Daylength and temperature are among the environmental cues known to affect JH titres and determine which strategy will be employed. In the model proposed by Rankin and Riddiford (1978) low JH titres are necessary for migratory flight while high levels are associated with sexual development. The fall, southward migration of the monarch conforms to this model, as adults arriving at the overwintering sites are sexually immature and remain so for some months. Much less is known about the underlying physiology of the …

Electrochemical Aspects Of The Biogenerator, Victor Pupkevich

Digitized Theses

The main aim of the present work was to study the factors influencing the biogenerator operation, and consisted of three basic parts: membrane conductivity study, development of a cathode and a long-term stability testing. The first part was dedicated to study the conductivity of H+-, Fe3+- and mixed H+ZFe3+- forms of cation exchange membranes Neosepta CMS, Nafion 112, 115 and 117, and Selemion HSF under conditions similar to these in the Fe3+∕Fe2+-H2∕H+ fuel cell in the range of current densities 0-90 mAZcm2. It was found that the conductivities of these membranes in 1.09 M H2SO4 solution decrease in the following …

The Ends Of Narrative, Richard Thomas Eldridge Jan 2007

The Ends Of Narrative, Richard Thomas Eldridge

Philosophy Faculty Works

We can begin to approach what might be called the peculiarity of literature as a form of cognitive practice by comparing how literary works end with how other pieces of intellectual work end. A proof in mathematics ends by reaching its final line, where each line that is not an axiom is generated in explicit accord with a rule of inference that in principle anyone might follow. Reports of experimental results generated in a lab specify procedures that were followed in setting up equipment and carrying out tests. While they often also offer conjectural interpretations of results and suggestions for …

Biostatistics Publications

Background Recent research examining cross-platform correlation of gene expression intensities has yielded mixed results. In this study, we demonstrate use of a correction factor for estimating cross-platform correlations.

Results In this paper, three technical replicate microarrays were hybridized to each of three platforms. The three platforms were then analyzed to assess both intra- and cross-platform reproducibility. We present various methods for examining intra-platform reproducibility. We also examine cross-platform reproducibility using Pearson's correlation. Additionally, we previously developed a correction factor for Pearson's correlation which is applicable when X and Y are measured with error. Herein we demonstrate that correcting for measurement …

Ecosystem Management Decision Support (Emds) Applied To Watershed Assessment On California’S North Coast, Rich Walker, Chris Keithley, Russ Henly, Scott Downie, Steve Cannata

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In 2001, the state of California initiated the North Coast Watershed Assessment Program (2003a) to assemble information on the status of coastal watersheds that have historically supported anadromous fish. The five-agency consortium explored the use of Ecosystem Management Decision Support (EMDS) (Reynolds and others 1996) as a means to help assess overall watershed and in-stream conditions for fish. EMDS is expert system software developed by the USDA Forest Service for similar efforts with the Northwest Forest Plan (2000). NCWAP developed models to help assess key watershed characteristics that contribute to shaping channel morphology and to evaluate the present stream habitat …
