Moral Status, Moral Value, And Human Embryos: Implications For Stem Cell Research, Bonnie Steinbock Jan 2007

Moral Status, Moral Value, And Human Embryos: Implications For Stem Cell Research, Bonnie Steinbock

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Human embryonic stem cells (ES cells) are of scientific and medical interest because of their ability to develop into different tissue types and because of their ability to be propagated for many generations in laboratory culture. Grown in a laboratory, they might one day be used in the treatment of degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. They could provide bone cells for the treatment of osteoporosis, eye cells for macular degeneration, blood cells for cancer, insulinproducing cells for diabetes, heart muscle cells for heart disease, nerve cells for spinal cord injury. The potential for benefit to so many people …

Hemispheric Differences In Indexical Specificity Effects In Spoken Word Recognition, Julio Gonza´Lez, Conor T. Mclennan Jan 2007

Hemispheric Differences In Indexical Specificity Effects In Spoken Word Recognition, Julio Gonza´Lez, Conor T. Mclennan

Psychology Faculty Publications

Variability in talker identity, one type of indexical variation, has demonstrable effects on the speed and accuracy of spoken word recognition. Furthermore, neuropsychological evidence suggests that indexical and linguistic information may be represented and processed differently in the 2 cerebral hemispheres, and is consistent with findings from the visual domain. For example, in visual word recognition, changes in font affect processing differently depending on which hemisphere initially processes the input. The present study examined whether hemispheric differences exist in spoken language as well. In 4 long-term repetition-priming experiments, the authors examined responses to stimuli that were primed by stimuli that …

Death Is Not Different: The Transfer Of Juvenile Offenders To Adult Criminal Courts, Christopher A. Mallett Jan 2007

Death Is Not Different: The Transfer Of Juvenile Offenders To Adult Criminal Courts, Christopher A. Mallett

Social Work Faculty Publications

The US Supreme Court first reviewed a state's statutory procedure for juvenile transfer to adult criminal courts in Kent v. US 1 Morris Kent was a fourteen-year-old first convicted for purse snatching and house-breaking, placed on probation, and later charged at the age of sixteen with robbery and rape. 2 Kent was arrested, presumably admitted to involvement in these crimes after seven hours of interrogation, and placed in a receiving home for one week.

Defining Space Use And Movements Of Canada Lynx With Global Positioning System Telemetry, Christopher Burdett, Ron Moen, Gerald J. Niemi, L. David Mech Jan 2007

Defining Space Use And Movements Of Canada Lynx With Global Positioning System Telemetry, Christopher Burdett, Ron Moen, Gerald J. Niemi, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Space use and movements of Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) are difficult to study with very-high-frequency radiocollars. We deployed global positioning system (GPS) collars on 11 lynx in Minnesota to study their seasonal space-use patterns. We estimated home ranges with minimum-convex-polygon and fixed-kernel methods and estimated core areas with area/probability curves. Fixed-kernel home ranges of males (range = 29–522 km2) were significantly larger than those of females (range = 5–95 km2) annually and during the denning season. Some male lynx increased movements during March, the month most influenced by breeding activity. Lynx core areas were …

Sensitivity Of Pan-Arctic Terrestrial Net Primary Productivity Simulations To Daily Surface Meterology From Ncep-Ncar And Era-40 Reanalyses, Ke Zhang, John S. Kimball, Maosheng Zhao, Walter C. Oechel, John Cassano, Steven W. Running Jan 2007

Sensitivity Of Pan-Arctic Terrestrial Net Primary Productivity Simulations To Daily Surface Meterology From Ncep-Ncar And Era-40 Reanalyses, Ke Zhang, John S. Kimball, Maosheng Zhao, Walter C. Oechel, John Cassano, Steven W. Running

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

We applied a terrestrial net primary production (NPP) model driven by satellite remote sensing observations of vegetation properties and daily surface meteorology from the 45-year ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP-NCAR) reanalysis (NNR) to assess NPP spatial and temporal variability for the pan-Arctic basin and Alaska from 1982 to 2000. Sensitivity analysis of the production efficiency model (PEM) to uncertainties in surface meteorological inputs indicate that ERA-40 solar radiation and NNR solar radiation and surface temperatures are the primary sources of PEM-based NPP uncertainty for the region. Considerable positive bias in …

Concordance Of Nuclear And Mitochondrial Dna Markers In Detecting A Founder Event In Lake Clark Sockeye Salmon, Kristina M. Ramstad, Carol Ann Woody, Chris Habicht, G. Kevin Sage, James E. Seeb, Fred W. Allendorf Jan 2007

Concordance Of Nuclear And Mitochondrial Dna Markers In Detecting A Founder Event In Lake Clark Sockeye Salmon, Kristina M. Ramstad, Carol Ann Woody, Chris Habicht, G. Kevin Sage, James E. Seeb, Fred W. Allendorf

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Genetic bottleneck effects can reduce genetic variation, persistence probability, and evolutionary potential of populations. Previous microsatellite analysis suggested a bottleneck associated with a common founding of sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka populations of Lake Clark, Alaska, about 100 to 400 generations ago. The common founding event occurred after the last glacial recession and resulted in reduced allelic diversity and strong divergence of Lake Clark sockeye salmon relative to neighboring Six Mile Lake and Lake Iliamna populations. Here we used two additional genetic marker types (allozymes and mtDNA) to examine these patterns further. Allozyme and mtDNA results were congruent with the microsatellite …

Structural Basis Of Effector Regulation And Signal Termination In Heterotrimeric Galpha Proteins, Stephen R. Sprang, Zhe Chen, Xinlin Du Jan 2007

Structural Basis Of Effector Regulation And Signal Termination In Heterotrimeric Galpha Proteins, Stephen R. Sprang, Zhe Chen, Xinlin Du

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

This chapter addresses, from a molecular structural perspective gained from examination of x-ray crystallographic and biochemical data, the mechanisms by which GTP-bound Galpha subunits of heterotrimeric G proteins recognize and regulate effectors. The mechanism of GTP hydrolysis by Galpha and rate acceleration by GAPs are also considered. The effector recognition site in all Galpha homologues is formed almost entirely of the residues extending from the C-terminal half of alpha2 (Switch II) together with the alpha3 helix and its junction with the beta5 strand. Effector binding does not induce substantial changes in the structure of Galpha*GTP. Effectors are structurally diverse. Different …

Causes And Consequences Of Prolonged Dormancy For An Iteroparous Geophyte, Silene Spaldingii, Peter Lesica, Elizabeth E. Crone Jan 2007

Causes And Consequences Of Prolonged Dormancy For An Iteroparous Geophyte, Silene Spaldingii, Peter Lesica, Elizabeth E. Crone

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

1. Prolonged dormancy, during which a plant does not produce above-ground shoots during one or more growing seasons, is common in temperate herbaceous species, but its role in life history is poorly understood.

2. We analysed stage transitions to determine the consequences of prolonged dormancy for Silene spaldingii, a perennial geophyte of semi-arid grasslands in the Columbia Basin of western North America. We monitored 179 S. spaldingii plants from 1987 through 2005, and analysed demographic rates as a function of plant state and seasonal precipitation.

3. Dormant plants had similar survival and growth to vegetative plants, and were more …

The Return Of The Nightingale, James C. Mckusick Jan 2007

The Return Of The Nightingale, James C. Mckusick

English Faculty Publications

In Ecological Literary Criticism (1994), Karl Kroeber advocated a bold new approach to the study of literature. More than just another routine method of textual analysis, ecological literary criticism seeks to bridge the gap between the natural sciences and the humanities. Such an approach incorporates theoretical advances in the science of environmental biology while it adapts to the changing social and political circumstances of contemporary criticism.

The emissions of NOx (defined as NO (nitric oxide) + NO2 (nitrogen dioxide)) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN), per unit amount of fuel burned, from fires in the pine forests that dominate the mountains surrounding Mexico City (MC) are about 2 times higher than normally observed for forest burning. The ammonia (NH3) emissions are about average for forest burning. The upper limit for the mass ratio of NOx to volatile organic compounds (VOC) for these MC-area mountain fires was similar to 0.38, which is similar to the NOx/VOC ratio in the MC urban area emissions inventory of 0.34, but much larger …

Installation 2 is about the relationship between human beings and nature, and is expressed through …

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (Aids), David Fleischmann Jan 2007

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (Aids), David Fleischmann

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a fatal syndrome that affects normally healthy individuals who have acquired an immune system deficiency. AIDS is acquired via a viral agent that attacks the immune system of healthy individuals and eventually erodes it, leading to the onset of a collection of deadly diseases. There are many diseases associated with AIDS, although many of them occur only when an individual has full-blown AIDS. Until then, an infected individual faces several different stages of disease.
