Development Of A Methanogen Marker For Detection Of Porcine Fecal Pollution In Surface Waters, Jennifer A. Ufnar, David F. Ufnar, Shiao Y. Wang, R.D. Ellender

Presentations

The goal of this study was to evaluate methanogen diversity in animal hosts to develop the first swine-specific archaeal molecular marker for fecal source tracking in surface waters. Phylogenetic analysis of swine mcrA sequences compared to mcrA sequences from the feces of five animals (cow, deer, sheep, horse, and chicken) and sewage showed five distinct swine clusters, with three swine-specific clades. From this analysis, six sequences were chosen for molecular marker development and initial testing. Only one mcrA sequence (P23-2) showed specificity for swine and was used for environmental testing.

PCR primers for the P23-2 clone mcrA sequence were developed …

Recruitment And Essential Habitat Of Juvenile Sand Seatrout (Cynoscion Arenarius) In Four Estuaries Along The West Coast Of Florida, Caleb H. Purtlebaugh, Kristin R. Rogers

Gulf of Mexico Science

The sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius) is an ecologically and economically important species common to estuarine and nearshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Currently, comprehensive information on the essential habitat of juvenile sand seatrout is limited. We analyzed data from a long-term fisheries-independent monitoring program to assess the spatial and temporal distributions of juvenile sand seatrout relative to various habitat parameters in four estuaries (Apalachicola Bay, the Suwannee River estuary, Tampa Bay, and Charlotte Harbor) along the gulf coast of Florida. A total of 25,668 sand seatrout (≤100 mm SL) were collected during monthly stratified-random sampling from Jan. …

Deep Scattering Layers Of The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Observed With A Shipboard 38-Khz Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, A.M. Kaltenberg, D.C. Biggs, S.F. Dimarco Jan 2007

Deep Scattering Layers Of The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Observed With A Shipboard 38-Khz Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, A.M. Kaltenberg, D.C. Biggs, S.F. Dimarco

Gulf of Mexico Science

Midwater sound-scattering layers containing aggregations of zooplankton and micronekton prey form in response to a trade-off between predator avoidance at depth and optimal foraging near the surface. Although the volume backscatter strength of zooplankton aggregations have been extensively studied in the past, fewer studies have specifically examined other descriptive characteristics of these layers such as depth of layers, timing of migrations, and the presence of secondary scattering layers below the main scattering layer. In the present study, patterns of deep scattering layers (DSLs) were characterized using relative acoustic backscatter from a ship-mounted 38-kHz phased-array, acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) in …

Characteristics Of A Green Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) Assemblage In Northwestern Florida Determined During A Hypothermic Stunning Event, Allen M. Foley, Karrie E. Singel, Peter H. Dutton, Tammy M. Summers, Anthony E. Redlow, Jeannine Lessman Jan 2007

Characteristics Of A Green Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) Assemblage In Northwestern Florida Determined During A Hypothermic Stunning Event, Allen M. Foley, Karrie E. Singel, Peter H. Dutton, Tammy M. Summers, Anthony E. Redlow, Jeannine Lessman

Gulf of Mexico Science

A hypothermic stunning event (i.e., cold-stunning event) during late Dec. 2000 and early Jan. 2001 involving an unprecedented number of sea turtles provided an opportunity to characterize the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) assemblage in St. Joseph Bay (Gulf County, Florida). In addition to 388 green turtles, the 401 cold-stunned turtles comprised 10 Kemp's ridleys (Lepidochelys kempii) and three loggerheads (Caretta caretta). Most (337/401) of the turtles survived and were eventually released. To place this event in perspective, we categorize sea turtle cold-stunning events in the eastern United States as either acute or chronic. Acute …

Pelagic Sargassum Mediates Predation Among Symbiotic Fishes And Shrimps, W. Randy Brooks, Kimberly A. Hutchinson, Melissa G. Tolbert

Gulf of Mexico Science

We investigated, using microcosm experiments, predator-prey relationships of symbionts within sargassum communities. Specifically, two predatory fishes (Stephanolepis hispidus and Histrio histrio) and two shrimp species (Latreutes fucorum and Leander tennicornis) were studied. The following research questions were addressed: 1) Do the fish predators select preferentially particular shrimp prey species? and 2) Does available habitat affect survival times of shrimp prey, or prey selection by fish predators? Stephanolepis hispidus showed a selection preference for Latreutes fucorum, as this shrimp's survival times were significantly lower than for Leander tennicornis in predation trials. However, H. histrio did not …

Hydrologic Monitoring Of An Integrated Low Impact Development (Lid) Underdrained Stormwater Management System , Nancy-Jeanne Bachmann

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

In 2005, Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) installed an extensive Low Impact Development (LID) stormwater management system on their new office site in Gainesville, Virginia. The 4-acre site is serviced by a network of LID components: permeable pavements (two proprietary and one gravel type), bioretention cell / rain garden, green roof, vegetated swale, rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation, and slow-release underground detention. The site consists of heavy clay soils, and the LID components are mostly integrated by a series of underdrain pipes. A comprehensive monitoring system has been designed and installed to measure hydrologic performance throughout the LID, underdrained …

Evolution Of The Southern Kenya Rift From Miocene To Present With A Focus On The Magadi Area, Alexandria L. Guth

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The Kenya (a.k.a., Gregory) Rift is a geologically active area located within the eastern branch of the larger East African Rift System (EARS). The study area is located in the southern Kenya Rift between 1° South and the Kenya-Tanzania border (covering approximately 1.5 square degrees, semi-centered on Lake Magadi) and is predominantly filled with extrusive igneous rocks (mostly basalts, phonolites and trachytes) of Miocene age or younger. Sediments are thin, less than 1.5Ma, and are confined to small grabens. The EARS can serve both as an analogue for ancient continental rifting and as a modern laboratory to observe the geologic …

Convergence Of The Many-Body Expansion Of Interaction Potentials: From Van Der Waals To Covalent And Metallic Systems, Andreas Hermann, Robert P. Krawczyk, Matthias Lein, Peter Schwerdtfeger, Ian P. Hamilton, James J.P. Stewart Jan 2007

Convergence Of The Many-Body Expansion Of Interaction Potentials: From Van Der Waals To Covalent And Metallic Systems, Andreas Hermann, Robert P. Krawczyk, Matthias Lein, Peter Schwerdtfeger, Ian P. Hamilton, James J.P. Stewart

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The many-body expansion of the interaction potential between atoms and molecules is analyzed in detail for different types of interactions involving up to seven atoms. Elementary clusters of Ar, Na, Si, and, in particular, Au are studied, using first-principles wave-function- and density-functional-based methods to obtain the individual n-body contributions to the interaction energies. With increasing atom number the many-body expansion converges rapidly only for long-range weak interactions. Large oscillatory behavior is observed for other types of interactions. This is consistent with the fact that Au clusters up to a certain size prefer planar structures over the more compact three-dimensional …

Conservation Of Grassland Birds In North America: Understanding Ecological Processes In Different Regions, Robert A. Askins, Felipe Chávez-Ramírez, Brenda C. Dale, Carola A. Haas, James R. Herkert, Fritz L. Knopf, Peter D. Vickery

Biology Faculty Publications

Many species of birds that depend on grassland or savanna habitats have shown substantial overall population declines in North America. To understand the causes of these declines, we examined the habitat requirements of birds in six types of grassland in different regions of the continent. Open habitats were originally maintained by ecological drivers (continual and pervasive ecological processes) such as drought, grazing, and fire in tallgrass prairie, mixed-grass prairie, shortgrass prairie, desert grassland, and longleaf pine savanna. By contrast, grasslands were created by occasional disturbances (e.g., fires or beaver [Castor canadensis] activity) in much of northeastern North America. The relative …

Patterns Of Abundance, Distribution, And Size Composition Of The Rainwater Killifish (Lucania Parva) In A Subtropical Bay, Joseph Armindo Tomoleoni

Open Access Theses

A throw-trap survey of the nearshore flora and fauna of Biscayne Bay, Florida, USA, was conducted in the shallow open-water area along the western shoreline of South Biscayne Bay (Matheson Hammock to Turkey Point) in 2005, in order to gain an understanding of fish and invertebrate species structure and assemblages of this habitat. The rainwater killifish (Lucania parva), was the most abundant species in our samples and was examined in relation to biotic and abiotic factors that might influence the distribution of this species. Individual fish were counted, weighed, and measured, while salinity, temperature, and depth were recorded at the …

Independent Associations Between Psychosocial Constructs And C-Reactive Protein Among Healthy Women, Kristen Farrell Jan 2007

Independent Associations Between Psychosocial Constructs And C-Reactive Protein Among Healthy Women, Kristen Farrell

Open Access Theses

C-reactive protein (CRP) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), peripheral vascular disease, diabetes, and stroke. In addition to traditional risk factors of CVD, some studies have shown that depression and anger independently predict CRP, but other studies have found null results, and few, if any, studies have considered possible roles of physical activity and diet. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of certain psychosocial variables to predict CRP controlling for traditional CVD risk factors. Cross-sectional data for 300 healthy women who participated in the Stockholm Female Coronary Risk Study were analyzed. Regression …

The Influence Of Early Language On Reading Achievement, Problem, And Prosocial Behavior In Elementary School, Ann-Marie Faria Jan 2007

The Influence Of Early Language On Reading Achievement, Problem, And Prosocial Behavior In Elementary School, Ann-Marie Faria

Open Access Theses

The current study examined the link between early language ability and literacy and behavioral outcomes in children prenatally exposed to cocaine. Prenatal exposure to cocaine places children at risk for language delays and early language problems are linked to both literacy and behavior problems in elementary school (Bandstra, 2002; Beitchman et al., 2001; Cantwell & Baker, 1977). Participants included 141 primarily African-American children from low SES backgrounds who were enrolled in a birth through three intervention program. Children were followed through first and second grade to evaluate the impact early language ability had on literacy and behavior in elementary school. …

Aphid Thermal Tolerance Is Governed By A Point Mutation In Bacterial Symbionts, Helen E. Dunbar, Alex C. C. Wilson, Nicole R. Ferguson, Nancy A. Moran

Biology Articles and Papers

Symbiosis is a ubiquitous phenomenon generating biological complexity, affecting adaptation, and expanding ecological capabilities. However, symbionts, which can be subject to genetic limitations such as clonality and genomic degradation, also impose constraints on hosts. A model of obligate symbiosis is that between aphids and the bacterium Buchnera aphidicola, which supplies essential nutrients. We report a mutation in Buchnera of the aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum that recurs in laboratory lines and occurs in field populations. This single nucleotide deletion affects a homopolymeric run within the heat-shock transcriptional promoter for ibpA, encoding a small heat-shock protein. This Buchnera mutation virtually eliminates the transcriptional …
