From Tainted To Sainted: The Interracial Marriage As Cultural Evangelism, Rashmi Goel Jan 2007

From Tainted To Sainted: The Interracial Marriage As Cultural Evangelism, Rashmi Goel

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

The article talks about interracial relationships viewed as cultural evangelism. The author mentions that viewing interracial marriage as the ultimate indicator of racial progress leaves the cognitive imprint that underlies all race relations. Professor Goel introduces the four archetypes of interracial relations that emanated from the four historical institutions such as the Civilized White and Colored Savage, the White Colonizer and Colored Subject, the White Master and Colored Slave, and the White Missionary and Colored Heathen. An analysis of the social and legal aspects of interracial marriages and interracial families is also presented.

Gender Identity Disorder, Jennifer Mckitrick Jan 2007

Gender Identity Disorder, Jennifer Mckitrick

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

According to the DSM IV, a person with GID is a male or female that feels a strong identification with the opposite sex and experiences considerable stress because of their actual sex (Task Force on DSM-IV and American Psychiatric Association, 2000). The way GID is characterized by health professionals, patients, and lay people belies certain assumptions about gender that are strongly held, yet nevertheless questionable. The phenomena of transsexuality and sex-reassignment surgery puts into stark relief the following question: “What does it mean to be male or female?” But while the answer to that question may be informed by contemplation …

Colby College Watershed Study: Long Pond, South (2007, 1995)

The water quality of the South Basin of Long Pond, located in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine, was investigated by the Colby Environmental Assessment Team (CEAT) from May to September of 2007. The physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of water quality were analyzed to evaluate the current health of the lake. The Long Pond South watershed was examined to investigate the effect of land-use patterns, including residential and commercial development, on the lake water quality. Data were also collected from road and shoreline surveys to produce maps highlighting areas that could potentially contribute to the degradation of water quality. …

Natural River Restoration In Urban Ecology: The Bronx River, Samuel P. Loor Jan 2007

Natural River Restoration In Urban Ecology: The Bronx River, Samuel P. Loor

Student Theses 2001-2013

Environmental science is the systematic study of our environment and our proper place in it. A relatively new field, environmental science is highly interdisciplinary, integrating natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities in a broad, holistic study of the world around us. In contrast to more theoretical disciplines, environmental science is mission-oriented. That is, it seeks new, valid, contextual knowledge about the natural world and our impacts on it, but obtaining this information creates a responsibility to get involved in trying something about the problems we have created i.e. environmental science is an applied science. For this study the environment that …

"Heidegger’S Will To Power," Journal Of The British Society For Phenomenology, Vol. 38, No. 1 (January 2007): 37-60, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

I argue that Heidegger deliberately composed the Beiträge zur Philosophie in order to keep it as an unpublished work throughout his life. In 1935, Heidegger was named to the board of directors for the National Socialist edition of Nietzsche’s collected works. This experience brought Heidegger into contact with the editorial forces that control an author’s legacy, even an author of Nietzsche’s formidable stylistic powers. And as is typical enough, the parallel Heidegger drew was a personal one. In response, Heidegger composed what might stand as his own “Nachlaß” material. The Beiträge would then work to limit Heidegger’s vulnerability to editorial …
