Caf1 Plays An Important Role In Mrna Deadenylation Separate From Its Contact To Ccr4, Takbum Ohn, Yueh-Chin Chiang, Darren J. Lee, Gang Yao, Chongxu Zhang, Clyde L. Denis
Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences
The CAF1 protein is a component of the CCR4 - NOT deadenylase complex. While yeast CAF1 displays deadenylase activity, this activity is not required for its deadenylation function in vivo, and CCR4 is the primary deadenylase in the complex. In order to identify CAF1- specific functional regions required for deadenylation in vivo, we targeted for mutagenesis six regions of CAF1 that are specifically conserved among CAF1 orthologs. Defects in residues 213 - 215, found to be a site required for binding CCR4, reduced the rate of deadenylation to a lesser extent and resulted in in vivo phenotypes that were less …

French Framing Of Anna Karenina: Confused Identities In Russian Aristocratic Culture, Devin Conley '07
French Framing Of Anna Karenina: Confused Identities In Russian Aristocratic Culture, Devin Conley '07
Honors Projects
Anna Karenina uses Russian identities and Russian language in opposition to European culture and French language to highlight the superficiality ofthe Russian aristocracy in the nineteenth century. In the context of the novel, honesty to oneself worth is the highest expression of being; unless one lives in truth, one cannot lay claim to a genuine existence. Culture and, more importantly, cultural identity provide this appraisal and affirmation of our own self-worth, as well as a framework in which to approach life.

Crocus, Karin Gottshall
Crocus, Karin Gottshall
Poetry
The poems in Crocus take as their starting points the interior universes created by myth, art, and memory, and through the exploration of these terrains create new ways of understanding the ordinary. Finding voice through both lyric and narrative approaches, Gottshall's poems are filled with complex music, unexpected imagery, and the mysterious interplay between the physical world and that of the imagination.
"These are lyrics that briefly and beautifully change our view of the world. In this effort, they do a quietly wild, beguilingly sudden work of making us rethink the ordinary before we can help ourselves, followed by the …

Growth And Survival Of Lactic Acid Bacteria During The Fermentation And Storage Of Seaweed Oligosaccharides Solution, Shao-Chi Wu, Fu-Jin Wang, Chorng-Liang Pan
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The current study is to evaluate the performance of two lactic acid bacteria (LAB) that could grow in seaweed oligosaccharides solutions (SOsS) for future development on algal health food. During the storage of fermented SOsS at 4°C, the changes in pH values, titratable acidity (TA), and LAB count were monitored. The seaweed polysaccharide extract solutions (SPsES) were prepared from Gelidium sp., Gracilaria sp., Mon. nitidum, and Por. dentate, and these SPsES were digested by agarases derived from Aeromonas salmonicida MAEF108 and Pseudomonas vesicularis MA103. The results of four seaweed polysaccharide extract solutions (SPsES) or four SOsS were inoculated with Enterococcus …

Reproductive Cycles Of The Pearl Oysters, Pinctada Fucata (Gould) And Pinctada Margaritifera (Linnaeus) (Bivalvia: Pteriidae) In Southwestern Taiwan Waters, Jiuan-Jiuan Hwang
Reproductive Cycles Of The Pearl Oysters, Pinctada Fucata (Gould) And Pinctada Margaritifera (Linnaeus) (Bivalvia: Pteriidae) In Southwestern Taiwan Waters, Jiuan-Jiuan Hwang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The reproductive cycles of the pearl oysters Pinctada fucata (Gould) and Pinctada margaritifera (Linnaeus) were examined based on 339 and 284 specimens, collected in southwestern Taiwan. Except for the month of December 2002, Pinctada fucata were collected during the periods from March 2002 to September 2003. Pinctada margaritifera were collected over two periods: from March 2002 to November 2002 and from June 2003 to September 2003. Histological observations on gonadal development indicated that Pinctada fucata and Pinctada margaritifera were protandrous hermaphrodites, and both species exhibited different annual cyclical patterns, in which maturity peaked in May and October for Pinctada fucata, …

Preserved Enzymatic Activity Of Glucose Oxidase Immobilized On Unmodified Electrodes For Glucose Detection, Gang Wang, Ngee Mei Thai, Siu-Tung Yau
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Glucose sensing electrodes have been realized by immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOx) on unmodified edge plane of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (epHOPG) and the native oxide of heavily doped silicon (SiO2/Si). Both kinds of electrode show direct interfacial electron transfer due to the redox process of the immobilized GOx. The measured formal potential of the redox process agrees with that of the native enzyme, suggesting that the immobilized GOx has retained its enzymatic activity. The electron transfer rates of the GOx immobilized electrode are 2s−1 for GOx/epHOPG electrode and 7.9s−1 for GOx/SiO2/Si electrode, which …

Single-Stranded Dna-Binding Proteins Regulate The Abundance Of Lim Domain And Lim Domain-Binding Proteins, Zhixiong Xu, Xianzhang Meng, Ying Cai, Hong Liang, Lalitha Nagarajan, Stephen J Brandt
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The LIM domain-binding protein Ldb1 is an essential cofactor of LIM-homeodomain (LIM-HD) and LIM-only (LMO) proteins in development. The stoichiometry of Ldb1, LIM-HD, and LMO proteins is tightly controlled in the cell and is likely a critical determinant of their biological actions. Single-stranded DNA-binding proteins (SSBPs) were recently shown to interact with Ldb1 and are also important in developmental programs. We establish here that two mammalian SSBPs, SSBP2 and SSBP3, contribute to an erythroid DNA-binding complex that contains the transcription factors Tal1 and GATA-1, the LIM domain protein Lmo2, and Ldb1 and binds a bipartite E-box-GATA DNA sequence motif. In …
