Ecological And Social Influences On Population Dynamics And Genetics Of Moose In Alaska, Jennifer Irene Schmidt Apr 2007

Ecological And Social Influences On Population Dynamics And Genetics Of Moose In Alaska, Jennifer Irene Schmidt

Biological Sciences

I examined social and ecological influences on moose (Alces alces gigas) in Alaska, USA, with respect to hunting success, antler size, and population genetic structure. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) is frequently used to assess hunter success; thus I hypothesized that landscape characteristics and moose density would affect success. Using hunter harvest tickets returned to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, I modeled CPUE with Weibull regression. I determined success is significantly predicted by hunt location, mode of transportation, hunting regulations, use of commercial services (i.e., guides), year, road density, hunter-to-moose ratio, moose density, and hunter residency status. Antler …

The Role Of Fire In The Carbon Dynamics Of The Boreal Forest, Michael S. Balshi Apr 2007

The Role Of Fire In The Carbon Dynamics Of The Boreal Forest, Michael S. Balshi

Biological Sciences

The boreal forest contains large reserves of carbon and across this region, wildfire is a common occurrence. To improve the understanding of how wildfire influences the carbon dynamics of this region, methods were developed to incorporate the spatial and temporal effects of fire into the Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (TEM). The historical role of fire on carbon dynamics of the boreal region was evaluated within the context of ecosystem responses to changing atmospheric CO2 and climate. These results show that the role of historical fire on boreal carbon dynamics resulted in a net sink of carbon, however, fire plays a major …

Population Ecology Of Pacific Common Eiders On The Yukon -Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska, Heather M. Wilson Apr 2007

Population Ecology Of Pacific Common Eiders On The Yukon -Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska, Heather M. Wilson

Biological Sciences

Knowledge of ecological factors that influence birth, death, immigration, and emigration provide insight into natural selection and population dynamics. Populations of Pacific common eiders (Somateria mollissima v-nigrum) on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) in western Alaska declined by 50-90% from 1957 to 1992 and then stabilized at reduced numbers from the early 1990's to the present. This study investigates the primary underlying processes affecting population dynamics of Pacific common eiders, with the goals of understanding factors that may have led to the observed decline and subsequent stabilization, and providing tools from which conservation, management, and recommendations for future research can be …

Copper River Salmon Habitat Management Study, Marie Lowe Apr 2007

Copper River Salmon Habitat Management Study, Marie Lowe

ISER Reports

In 2006, Ecotrust commissioned the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Alaska Anchorage to conduct a study on land managers’ perceptions of salmon habitat management in the Copper River Watershed (CRW). ISER interviewed 20 managers from 10 organizations representing Federal agencies (BLM, USACE, USFS, USFWS), State of Alaska agencies (ADFG, DEC, DNR) and Alaska Native Corporations (AHTNA, EYAK). The study was conducted to examine managers’ perceptions about the current status of watershed management with regard to health of salmon populations. By interviewing resource managers, the research was conducted to determine threats to salmon habitat and …

Finding Relevant Pdf Medical Journal Articles By The Content Of Their Figures As Well As Their Text, Ammon J. Christiansen Apr 2007

Finding Relevant Pdf Medical Journal Articles By The Content Of Their Figures As Well As Their Text, Ammon J. Christiansen

Theses and Dissertations

This work addresses the need for an alternative to keyword-based search for sifting through large PDF medical journal article document collections for literature review purposes. Despite users' best efforts to form precise and accurate queries, it is often difficult to guess the right keywords to find all the related articles while finding a minimum number of unrelated ones. Failure during literature review to find relevant, related research results in wasted research time and effort in addition to missing significant work in the related area which could affect the quality of the research work being conducted. The purpose of this work …

Developmental/Remedial Sciences At Community Colleges In Five States In The Central Part Of The United States, Tricia L. Paramore Apr 2007

Developmental/Remedial Sciences At Community Colleges In Five States In The Central Part Of The United States, Tricia L. Paramore

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Phipps (1998) emphasized interinstitutional collaboration among colleges to share and replicate best practices and ideas as a strategy to improve the effectiveness of developmental/remedial education, but Johnson (2001) noted a lack of communication between science educators and developmental educators. The purposes of this mixed methods study were (a) to identify and examine the characteristics of developmental/remedial sciences as it existed in the 2006-2007 academic year in terms of organization, structure, instructional practices, and curriculum as offered at community colleges in five states in the central part of the United States; and (b) to develop a set of guidelines for community …

Advection And Retention Of Larval Dungeness Crab Cancer Magister In Glacier Bay And Adjacent Areas, Wongyu Park Apr 2007

Advection And Retention Of Larval Dungeness Crab Cancer Magister In Glacier Bay And Adjacent Areas, Wongyu Park

Fisheries

Spatial and temporal variations of larval abundance of Dungeness crabs were investigated as indications of larval advection and retention in southeastern Alaska. Larvae were collected in five transects: upper Chatham, Icy Strait, Cross Sound, and Icy Point, May to September 1997-2004 and Cape Edward in June 1998-1999. Larval densities were higher in inland water transect and lowest in offshore transects. In all transects, larval densities were highest in June. Zoeae I (ZI) were predominant with a small portion of later larval stages (ZII to ZV) in May. In May and June, late stages (ZIV and ZV) co-occurred with ZI. Later …

Investigations On The Impacts Of Land-Cover Changes And/Or Increased Carbon Dioxide Concentrations On Four Regional Water Cycles And Their Interactions With The Global Water Cycle, Zhao Li Apr 2007

Investigations On The Impacts Of Land-Cover Changes And/Or Increased Carbon Dioxide Concentrations On Four Regional Water Cycles And Their Interactions With The Global Water Cycle, Zhao Li

Atmospheric Sciences

A suite of simulations that combine reference (355ppmv), doubled and tripled CO2 concentrations alternatively without and with land-cover changes in four similar-sized study regions, the Yukon, Ob, St. Lawrence and Colorado basin and adjacent land, are performed with the fully coupled Community Climate System Model to investigate the impact on global and regional water cycles and the interaction of these regional water cycles with the global water cycle. The relative changes in water-cycle quantities caused by increased CO 2 enhance with latitude and CO2 concentrations. Regional and global water cycles interactions are more pronounced in a warmer climate, but regional …

Single Sex Classrooms, How Boys And Girls Learn Differently: A Guide Book For Elementary Teachers, Desiree Cyr

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Single Sex Classrooms, How Boys and Girls Learn Differently Gurian (2004) examined the differences between girls and boys. He reported girls and boys learn fundamentally differently. This applied project identifies these differences and provides strategies that teachers can use in the classroom. The strategies are effective for boys and girls at the elementary school level. Implementing these strategies will enable teachers to address the gender specific learning needs of both boys and girls.

Multiple Intelligence Theory In The Classroom, Carolann Ellingson Apr 2007

Multiple Intelligence Theory In The Classroom, Carolann Ellingson

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Howard Gardner first proposed his theory of Multiple Intelligence theory in 1983. Over the past two decades this theory has made its way into classrooms and has gained positive attention. However, with the restrictions of set curriculums and standardized testing, Multiple Intelligence theory has faced obstacles implementing fully into the classroom. To effectively apply this theory into the classroom there needs to be openness to differences within the classroom and how students learn. The goal of this project was to present a project that will be a useful tool for beginning and experienced teachers. The strategies presented in this project …
