Oluwasegun, Michael, Bronx African American History Project
Oluwasegun, Michael, Bronx African American History Project
Oral Histories
Michael is from Nigeria and at the time of the interview was a student at Fordham University. He was born in Nigeria and came to the states with an F-1 Visa to study. Michael chose Fordham because of his Jesuit roots back in Nigeria.
Michael talks a lot about his experience at Fordham University, he says the community has been welcoming to him and he can appreciate the Jesuit tradition of caring for the whole person. Michael has an apartment on Arthur Avenue. He has never had any problems with people in the Bronx. He visits an African restaurant named …

Scope: A Web Server For Practical De Novo Motif Discovery, Jonathan M. Carlson, Arijit Chakravarty, Charles E. Deziel, Robert H. Gross
Dartmouth Scholarship
SCOPE is a novel parameter-free method for the de novoidentification of potential regulatory motifs in sets of coordinately regulated genes. The SCOPE algorithm combines the output of three component algorithms, each designed to identify a particular class of motifs. Using an ensemble learning approach, SCOPE identifies the best candidate motifs from its component algorithms. In tests on experimentally determined datasets, SCOPE identified motifs with a significantly higher level of accuracy than a number of other web-based motif finders run with their default parameters. Because SCOPE has no adjustable parameters, the web server has an intuitive interface, requiring only a …

On The Green Vol. 37 No. 11 April 13, 2007, Gallaudet University
2001-2010
On the Green is an internal publication of Gallaudet College, which later became Gallaudet University. It notified employees of updates around the campus and in the broader community, including new construction and the establishment of new academic programs. Running until 2010, it was supplanted by various forms of online mass communications across multiple audiences.

Gynomorphic Mandible Morphology In The Dobsonfly, Corydalus Cornutus, David E. Bowles, Atilano Contreras-Ramos, Robert W. Sites
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Two aberrant males of Corydalus cornutus (L.) (Insecta: Megaloptera), which exhibit unusually short mandibles with discrete dentition, are recorded from a locality in Missouri. Morphological details of the specimens, as well as implications for the overall morphological variation of the genus and species are discussed. The term gynomorphic is suggested as the best descriptor of this case, given that little explanatory information is available to classify these specimens as true gynandromorphs.

The completion of the draft sequence of the rhesus macaque genome allowed us to study the genomic composition and evolution of transposable elements in this representative of the Old World monkey lineage, a group of diverse primates closely related to humans. The L1 family of long interspersed elements appears to have evolved as a single lineage, and Alu elements have evolved into four currently active lineages. We also found evidence of elevated horizontal transmissions of retroviruses and the absence of DNA transposon activity in the Old World monkey lineage. In addition, ∼100 precursors of composite SVA (short interspersed element, variable …

The rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) is an abundant primate species that diverged from the ancestors of Homo sapiens about 25 million years ago. Because they are genetically and physiologically similar to humans, rhesus monkeys are the most widely used nonhuman primate in basic and applied biomedical research. We determined the genome sequence of an Indian-origin Macaca mulatta female and compared the data with chimpanzees and humans to reveal the structure of ancestral primate genomes and to identify evidence for positive selection and lineage-specific expansions and contractions of gene families. A comparison of sequences from individual animals was used to investigate …
