Real-Time Gps-Alternative Navigation Using Commodity Hardware, Jordon L. Fletcher Jun 2007

Real-Time Gps-Alternative Navigation Using Commodity Hardware, Jordon L. Fletcher

Theses and Dissertations

Modern navigation systems can use the Global Positioning System (GPS) to accurately determine position with precision in some cases bordering on millimeters. Unfortunately, GPS technology is susceptible to jamming, interception, and unavailability indoors or underground. There are several navigation techniques that can be used to navigate during times of GPS unavailability, but there are very few that result in GPS-level precision. One method of achieving high precision navigation without GPS is to fuse data obtained from multiple sensors. This thesis explores the fusion of imaging and inertial sensors and implements them in a real-time system that mimics human navigation. In …

A Series Of Vertically Integrated Nanotechnology Experiments For The Undergraduate Curriculum, Kevin W. Kittredge, Lesley E. Russell, Michael C. Leopold Jun 2007

A Series Of Vertically Integrated Nanotechnology Experiments For The Undergraduate Curriculum, Kevin W. Kittredge, Lesley E. Russell, Michael C. Leopold

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We have designed three nanotechnology experiments that are vertically integrated for an undergraduate chemistry curriculum. They are an evolving set of experiments for sequential courses in an undergraduate chemistry program. These experiments are designed to match the student's level of understanding for each particular course. The participating student is involved in a "research" project that progresses in both theory and experimental technique. Students benefit from these vertically integrated experiments by being involved in multiple facets of a simulated research project. This mimics a traditional research project under an advisor's supervision without the undesired drawback of an unknown outcome.

From Learned To Learning: Why Addiction To Learning Is Vital To Renewing Competitive Advantage, Radhashyam Giridharadas Jun 2007

From Learned To Learning: Why Addiction To Learning Is Vital To Renewing Competitive Advantage, Radhashyam Giridharadas

Student Scholarship

Business strategists seek to create a sustainable competitive advantage so that their organizations thrive. Yet in industry after industry the corporate graveyards are lined with companies that once led an industry and were subsequently ousted by smaller, nimbler competitors or new entrants. The long list of failed organizations underscores the challenge to the notion of sustainability. Clearly competitive advantage is subject to constant erosion, and companies seeking a sustainable competitive advantage may be chasing an illusory goal. To thrive, companies must learn to adapt their skills, resources and experience and transform them into renewable competitive advantages that are commensurate with …

Session 11 - “Dangerous Things”: A Symbolic Domain For Killer Bees, Daniel E. Lebas Jun 2007

Session 11 - “Dangerous Things”: A Symbolic Domain For Killer Bees, Daniel E. Lebas

International Symposium on Technology and Society

Viewing usage of words in culture as key symbols, Sherry B. Ortner's indicators were applied to an analysis of the lay-public’s use of "killer bee", "Africanized Honey Bee", and "honey bee". While conducting social impact study in southern Nevada, the author noticed that informants were not associating "killer bee" with "honey bee" imagery. Interviews were conducted with residents in the community of Boulder City, Nevada focusing upon symbolic linkage between the expressions: honey bee, killer bee and Africanized Honey Bee. It was determined that people do not link these expressions together in the same symbolic domain. Ethnohistory of the human/bee …

Session 11 - Radioactive Dispersion Devices (Rdd): What Are The Odds?, Dennis Bechtel Jun 2007

Session 11 - Radioactive Dispersion Devices (Rdd): What Are The Odds?, Dennis Bechtel

International Symposium on Technology and Society

Since the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 there has been apprehension that the United States may be ill-prepared to prevent future terrorist events. One source of concern is that a Radioactive Dispersion Device (RDD) could be detonated at a vulnerable target anywhere in the nation. A RDD, also known as a “dirty bomb, is a conventional explosive packed with radioactive material. The explosion could disperse radioactive material over a wide area. The target could be an icon associated with American democracy and government, critical systems and infrastructure, a water supply, a nuclear power plant and others. Such an event …

Spatial And Temporal Variation In The Diet Of Coyotes In The Chicago Metropolitan Area, Paul S. Morey, Eric M. Gese Jun 2007

Spatial And Temporal Variation In The Diet Of Coyotes In The Chicago Metropolitan Area, Paul S. Morey, Eric M. Gese

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Coyotes (Canis latrans) are an opportunistic predator that have adapted to many human-modified environments. Conflicts between coyotes and humans are an increasing concern for managers in urban areas. We examined the spatial and temporal utilization and availability of natural and human-associated food for coyotes in the Chicago metropolitan area, Illinois, USA. We collected 1429 coyote scats from May 2000 to December 2002, and conducted prey surveys in 2002, in 4 sites that varied in their degree of urban development. Dominant food items included small rodents, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), fruit, eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) …

Session 1 - Rationalizing The Home Front: The Cold War, The Nevada Test Site, And Radiation Exposure, Leisl A. Carr

International Symposium on Technology and Society

Beginning in 1953, radiation exposure and its effects became a hotly contested issue between the government, members of communities surrounding the Nevada Test Site (NTS), and researchers within the national scientific community. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), concerned about maintaining a continental testing facility and aware that atomic testing would impact communities surrounding the NTS, sent representatives to areas potentially affected by fallout to instruct and reassure the affected public. How government officials perceived neighboring communities and how these communities perceived these representatives of the government often determined public responses to the atomic testing program. The story of radiation monitors …

Localization Of Proteasomes And Proteasomal Proteolysis In The Mammalian Interphase Cell Nucleus By Systematic Application Of Immunocytochemistry, Andrea Scharf, Thomas Dino Rockel, Anna Von Mikecz Jun 2007

Localization Of Proteasomes And Proteasomal Proteolysis In The Mammalian Interphase Cell Nucleus By Systematic Application Of Immunocytochemistry, Andrea Scharf, Thomas Dino Rockel, Anna Von Mikecz

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Proteasomes are ATP-driven, multisubunit proteolytic machines that degrade endogenous proteins into peptides and play a crucial role in cellular events such as the cell cycle, signal transduction, maintenance of proper protein folding and gene expression. Recent evidence indicates that the ubiquitin-proteasome system is an active component of the cell nucleus. A characteristic feature of the nucleus is its organization into distinct domains that have a unique composition of macromolecules and dynamically form as a response to the requirements of nuclear function. Here, we show by systematic application of different immunocytochemical procedures and comparison with signature proteins of nuclear domains that …

Translocation Of Swamp Rabbits In Southern Illinois, Angela M. Watland, Eric M. Schauber, Alan Woolf Jun 2007

Translocation Of Swamp Rabbits In Southern Illinois, Angela M. Watland, Eric M. Schauber, Alan Woolf

Publications

Habitat of Sylvilagus aquaticus (swamp rabbits) in Illinois has been reduced and fragmented due to human land use. Translocation may enable swamp rabbits to colonize isolated habitat patches. We live-trapped and translocated 9 male and 8 female swamp rabbits to unoccupied habitat in southern Illinois in January and February 2004. Eight of 17 translocated rabbits died within 7 days after release. However, mortality rates appeared to drop rapidly over time after release. Predators killed at least 10 of 14 rabbits that died. For conserving swamp rabbits, translocation success is limited by poor live-trapping success and high levels of post-release predation. …
