The Problem With Unpaid Work, Katharine K. Baker Jun 2007

The Problem With Unpaid Work, Katharine K. Baker

All Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the problems with a social norm that assumes women should shoulder a disproportionate amount of unpaid family work. It evaluates the most recent empirical data which suggests that women continue to do substantially more unpaid work than men, and men continue to do substantially more paid work than women. It then briefly reviews two standard explanations for where this gendered division of work may come from, biological inclination and/or systems of male dominance. It suggests that neither of these traditional explanations have given adequate consideration to the normative question begged by the extant division of labor. Is …

Of The World Trade Court's Burden, Sungjoon Cho Jun 2007

Of The World Trade Court's Burden, Sungjoon Cho

All Faculty Scholarship

Decisions of the WTO tribunal (Court) on sensitive disputes, such as those concerning human health, have often caused resentment from some groups, besides losing parties. Beneath this disapproval against the Court lies an image of a Dworkinian Hercules which capriciously renders its own answers on risks and science. In judging which party should win the case, this Hercules assesses parties' arguments and evidence on risks and regulatory responses through a technical rule labeled the “burden of proof” (BOP). Yet, the BOP is more of the Court's burden than of parties' burden (who to prove) in that the final outcome of …

Toward An Identity Theory Of International Organizations, Sungjoon Cho Jun 2007

Toward An Identity Theory Of International Organizations, Sungjoon Cho

All Faculty Scholarship

Conventional international relations (IR) theorists, such as realists, neo-functionalists or regime theorists, view international organizations (IOs) as passive tools with which to achieve certain goals. Although an IO may facilitate inter-state cooperation and reduce transaction costs, it does not have a life of its own. Therefore, conventional IR theorists focus mostly on the creation of an IO and inter-state cooperation leading up to the creation. As a result, an IO's institutional change remains rather an “under-studied” and “under-theorized” issue in the conventional international relations (IR) framework.

Granted, conventional IR theories may provide useful insights on an inter-national dynamic among creators …

Evaluation Of Methods To Enhance Reef Restoration, David S. Gilliam, Alison L. Moulding, Vladimir N. Kosmynin, Vanessa I. P. Brinkhuis, Richard E. Dodge

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The coral reefs of southeast Florida are offshore a highly urbanized area with a population exceeding 5 million people and three major shipping ports with over 6000 ships calling on an annual basis. Reef injury events are common and have been caused by ship groundings and marine construction activities such as channel dredging and cable placement. Restoration activities generally only include the reattachment of dislodged stony corals, removal of rubble, and boulder stabilization. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has recognized these limited activities and is collaborating with Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center to study ways to accelerate coral reef …

Assessing The Effects Of Federal Pediatric Drug Safety Policies, Avi Dor, Taylor Burke, Ramona Whittington, Taylor Clark, Ruth Lopert, Sara J. Rosenbaum Jun 2007

Assessing The Effects Of Federal Pediatric Drug Safety Policies, Avi Dor, Taylor Burke, Ramona Whittington, Taylor Clark, Ruth Lopert, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

This policy analysis examines the effectiveness of pediatric exclusivity, one of the policy approaches the federal government uses to promote drug safety for children. Federal policy in this area is highly complex, and provisions related to pediatric drug safety, including pediatric exclusivity, are set to expire in 2007. Following a policy overview, this analysis summarizes the impact of pediatric exclusivity and reports on the results of our effort to shed light on the economic value of pediatric exclusivity. The analysis concludes with a discussion of options for further promoting a safe environment for drug use in children.

Newmarket Open Space Conservation Plan, Ellen Snyder Jun 2007

Newmarket Open Space Conservation Plan, Ellen Snyder

PREP Reports & Publications

Open spaces – forests, fields, wetlands, floodplains, salt marshes, rivers and streams – are integral to our community. These lands and waters that thread through our neighborhoods are a scenic reminder of our history, when people made their living by working the land. Yet we still depend on these open spaces for our health and our wellbeing. These places provide many “services” such as clean air, flood control, filtering pollutants and purifying drinking water, natural pest control, plant pollination, cooler summer temperatures, and areas for relaxing, exercising and recreating. Collectively these can be thought of as a “natural services network” …

PREP Reports & Publications

The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Estuary Program which is a joint local/state/federal program established under the Clean Water Act with the goal of protecting and enhancing nationally significant estuaries. The NHEP’s Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (Management Plan)for New Hampshire’s estuaries was completed in 2000 and updated in 2005. The Management Plan outlines key issues related to management of New Hampshire’s estuaries and proposes strategies (Action Plans) to protect, enhance, and monitor the state’s estuarine resources. Local stakeholders established the NHEP’s priorities, which include water quality improvements, shellfish resource enhancements, …

Final Environmental Impact Statement: Light Goose Management, James R. Kelley Jr., Robert Blohm Jun 2007

Final Environmental Impact Statement: Light Goose Management, James R. Kelley Jr., Robert Blohm

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Executive Summary

The term “light geese” refers collectively to three taxa of geese that have light coloration: greater snow geese, Ross’s geese, and lesser snow geese. Various light goose populations in North America have experienced rapid population growth, and have reached levels such that they are damaging habitats on their arctic and subarctic breeding areas. Habitat degradation in arctic and subarctic areas may be irreversible, and has negatively impacted light goose populations and other bird populations dependent on such. Natural marsh habitats on some migration and wintering areas also have been impacted by light geese. In addition, goose damage to …

Is Self-Esteem The Primary Predictor Of Disordered Eating?, Maureen E. Shea, Mary Pritchard Jun 2007

Is Self-Esteem The Primary Predictor Of Disordered Eating?, Maureen E. Shea, Mary Pritchard

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study examined whether self-esteem is the primary predictor of disordered eating. A survey measured levels of self-esteem and a variety of other health behaviors in 196 male and 263 female undergraduate students. We conducted stepwise regressions to determine which of several variables (self-esteem, high stress, poor coping skills, maladaptive perfectionism, gender) best predicted disordered eating. The results indicated that self-esteem was the secondary predictor for bulimia, drive for thinness, and body dissatisfaction. Future research should further investigate how self-esteem interacts with other predictor variables to better determine the relationship between self-esteem and disordered eating.

Closest And Farthest-Line Voronoi Diagrams In The Plane, Mark C. Henle Jun 2007

Closest And Farthest-Line Voronoi Diagrams In The Plane, Mark C. Henle

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Voronoi diagrams are a geometric structure containing proximity information useful in efficiently answering a number of common geometric problems associated with a set of points in the plane.. They have applications in fields ranging from crystallography to biology. Diagrams of sites other than points and with different distance metrics have been studied. This paper examines the Voronoi diagram of a set of lines, which has escaped study in the computational geometry literature. The combinatorial and topological properties of the closest and farthest Voronoi diagrams are analyzed and O(n^2) and O(n log n) algorithms are presented for their computation respectively.
