Low socioeconomic status (SES) increases the risk for developing psychiatric and chronic medical disorders. A stress-related pathway by which low SES may affect mental and physical health is through the perception of holding a low social standing, termed low subjective social status. This proposal implicates overlapping brain regions mediating stress reactivity and socioemotional behaviors as neuroanatomical substrates that could plausibly link subjective social status to health-related outcomes. In a test of this proposal, we used a computational structural neuroimaging method (voxel-based morphometry) in a healthy community sample to examine the relationships between reports of subjective social status and regional gray …

Subcellular regulation of protein synthesis requires the correct localization of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) within the cell. In this study, we investigate whether the axonal localization of neuronal mRNAs is regulated by extracellular stimuli. By profiling axonal levels of 50 mRNAs detected in regenerating adult sensory axons, we show that neurotrophins can increase and decrease levels of axonal mRNAs. Neurotrophins (nerve growth factor, brainderived neurotrophic factor, and neurotrophin-3) regulate axonal mRNA levels and use distinct downstream signals to localize individual mRNAs. However, myelin-associated glycoprotein and semaphorin 3A regulate axonal levels of different mRNAs and elicit the opposite effect on axonal mRNA …

Isolation Of The Saddle And Crown Conformers Of Cyclotriveratrylene (Ctv) Oxime, Marlon R. Lutz Jr., David C. French, Peter Rehage, Daniel P. Becker
Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The oxime of cyclotriveratrylene (CTV) has been prepared and the individual crown and saddle conformers were isolated and characterized. The equilibrium constant was measured in CDCl3 and in DMSO-d6 and was shown to favor the crown conformer by an order of magnitude in DMSO-d6, relative to an approximately equal mixture at equilibrium in CDCl3. The time course for interconversion of the saddle to the crown was measured by 1H NMR and the t1/2 of the saddle was determined to be 2.45 h in CDCl3 at 25 °C, and 3.71 h in DMSO-d6.
Prevalence Of Stress, Urge, And Mixed Urinary Incontinence In Women, Chaandini Jayachandran
Prevalence Of Stress, Urge, And Mixed Urinary Incontinence In Women, Chaandini Jayachandran
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Urinary Incontinence is a common affliction that impairs quality of life and restricts social activity in adult women. Based on etiology and pathophysiology, urinary incontinence is classified into Stress, Urge, and Mixed urinary incontinence. Knowledge of the specific type of incontinence helps in determining course of treatment. A retrospective, descriptive, observational study was designed to determine the percentage of new patients seeking treatment for bladder complaints, who were identified by Medical, Epidemiological, and Social aspects of Aging (MESA) questionnaire to reflect Stress, Urge, or Mixed urinary incontinence. The secondary aim was to investigate any trends other variables studied that showed …

Daytime Cover, Diet And Space-Use Of Golden Jackals (Canis Aureus) In Agro-Ecosystems Of Bangladesh, Michael M. Jaeger, Emdadul Haque, Parvin Sultana, Richard L. Bruggers
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Golden jackals are locally common in Bangladesh despite intensive cultivation and high human densities. We studied the relative importance of seasonal flooding, rodent prey-base, and daytime cover on the occurrence of golden jackals in the two major agro-ecosystems in Bangladesh, one with annual monsoon flooding and the other without. Jackals were less common throughout the year where floodwaters occurred that would have excluded them for 1–3 months during their pup-rearing season. Diets of jackals were similar in the two agro-ecosystems. Rodents were the most common food type in scats throughout the year. The occurrence of burrowing rats in scats peaked …

A Critical Examination Of The Fda’S Efforts To Preempt Failure-To-Warn Claims, David A. Kessler, David C. Vladeck
O'Neill Institute Papers
This article explores the legality and wisdom of the FDA’s effort to persuade courts to find most failure-to-warn claims preempted. The article first analyzes the FDA’s justifications for reversing its long-held views to the contrary and explains why the FDA’s position cannot be reconciled with its governing statute. The article then examines why the FDA’s position, if ultimately adopted by the courts, would undermine the incentives drug manufacturers have to change labeling to respond to newly-discovered risks. The background possibility of failure-to-warn litigation provides important incentives for drug companies to ensure that drug labels reflect accurate and up-to-date safety information. …

A Benefit Transfer Approach To The Estimation Of Agro-Ecosystems Services Benefits: A Case Study Of Kern County, California, Eivis Quenani-Petrela, Jay E. Noel, Thomas Mastin
Agribusiness
Agro-ecosystem functions support not only the production of food and fiber but a variety of non-market goods and services that are socially valuable. Examples of those non-market goods and services include aesthetic experiences, wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration, and recreation to name a few. There is a growing awareness of the importance that provision of these non-market goods and services has to the long-run sustainability of agriculture in general and California agriculture in particular. This awareness has led to an increasing interest in the estimation of the economic value of agro-ecosystem functions non-market goods and services. This increased awareness can be …

Maternal Serum Polychlorinated Biphenyl Concentrations Across Critical Windows Of Human Development, Michael S. Bloom, Germaine M. Buck-Louis, Aiyi Liu
Environmental Health Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Background
Few data are available on polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations over critical windows of human reproduction and development inclusive of the periconception window.
Objectives
Our goal was to measure changes in PCB concentrations from preconception to pregnancy, through pregnancy, or after a year without becoming pregnant.
Methods
Seventy-nine women planning pregnancies were prospectively enrolled and followed for up to 12 menstrual cycles of attempting pregnancy. Blood specimens were obtained from participating women preconceptionally (n = 79), after a positive pregnancy test leading to a live birth (n = 54) or pregnancy loss (n= 10), at approximately …

Reciprocal Effects Of Mir-122 On Expression Of Heme Oxygenase-1 And Hepatitis C Virus Genes In Human Hepatocytes, Ying Shan, Jianyu Zheng, Richard W. Lambrecht, Herbert L. Bonkovsky
UCHC Articles - Research
Background & Aims Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an antioxidant defense and key cytoprotective enzyme, which is repressed by Bach1. MicroRNA-122 (miR-122) is specifically expressed and highly abundant in human liver and required for replication of hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA. This study was to assess whether a specific miR-122 antagomir down-regulates HCV protein replication and up-regulates HO-1. Methods We transfected antagomir of miR-122, 2′-O-methyl-mimic miR-122, or non-specific-control antagomir (NSCA) into wild type Huh-7 cells or Huh-7 stably replicating HCV subgenomic core-NS3 (CNS3 replicon cells), or NS3-5B (9–13 replicon cells). Results Antagomir of miR-122 reduced the abundance of HCV-RNA by 64% …

Probationers, Parolees And Dna Collection: Is This "Justice For All"?, Jessica K. Fender
Seventh Circuit Review
In 1994, the DNA Identification Act permitted the government to establish a national database (CODIS) where it could collect DNA samples from those convicted of certain violent crimes. In the last few years, DNA collection statutes have been repeatedly expanded, to the point where some now require samples upon arrest. Not surprisingly, the federal DNA collection statute has been challenged repeatedly on Fourth Amendment grounds. In the Seventh Circuit, this issue was most recently addressed in United States v. Hook, a case in which a white-collar criminal on supervised release challenged the federal DNA collection statute. The court held …

Crop Insurance Alternatives For Hay In South Dakota, Matthew A. Diersen
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Crop insurance for hay has been available statewide in South Dakota since the 2001 crop year. Producers across the state use the insurance to different degrees. Typically, in the northwest counties, more than 50% of hay acres are insured; while in the eastern counties, less than 10% of hay acres are insured. What follows is an overview of Forage Production insurance and a discussion of where it may be used and of coverage producers may select when using this risk management tool.

The effects of ageing on the cardiovascular system contribute to substantial alterations in cellular morphology and function. The variables regulating these changes are unknown; however, one set of signalling molecules that may be of particular importance in mediating numerous cellular responses, including control of cell growth, differentiation and adaptation, are the proteins associated with the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling systems. The MAPKs, in conjunction with the p70 S6k signalling cascade, have emerged as critical components for regulating numerous mechanotransduction-related cellular responses. Here we investigate the ability of uniaxial stretch to activate the MAPK and p70 S6k pathways in adult …
