A Study Of The Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of Symmes Creek And Tributaries In Jackson, Gallia And Lawrence Counties, Ohio, Michael A. Hoggarth, David A. Kimberly, Benjamin G. Van Allen Sep 2007

A Study Of The Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of Symmes Creek And Tributaries In Jackson, Gallia And Lawrence Counties, Ohio, Michael A. Hoggarth, David A. Kimberly, Benjamin G. Van Allen

Biology and Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Freshwater mussels (family Unionidae) are among the most threatened of Ohio's aquatic fauna. Interest in their biogeography has increased as their distribution and abundance has declined. This study was performed to assess the status of the mussels of Symmes Creek and it major tributaries in southern Ohio. Of the 24 species of mussels known to have inhabited this watershed, 16 were found alive in the system in 2004 and 2005 and two others were found as freshly dead shells. These species are thought to represent the extant mussel fauna in the system today. Of the remaining six species collected prior …

Sources Of Wood And Wood Residues For Energy Production In Indiana, Isaac Slaven, Eva Haviarova, Klein Ileleji Sep 2007

Sources Of Wood And Wood Residues For Energy Production In Indiana, Isaac Slaven, Eva Haviarova, Klein Ileleji

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

As energy prices rise and there is a push for energy to be produced from renewable resources, the contribution of Indiana’s corn and soybean industry often overshadows the impact that wood residues can have in response to these demands. Reports show that the wood products industry is the largest, by paid wages, of any agricultural industry in Indiana and employs 47,000 Hoosiers (Biocrossroads 2005). In fact, Indiana has more than 4.5 million acres of forest land (USDA FS, FIA 2005) compared to about 12.3 million acres of crop land (NASS 2006). In addition to the millions of acres of forestland, …

Toward Automating Ea Configuration: The Parent Selection Stage, Ekaterina Smorodkina, Daniel R. Tauritz Sep 2007

Toward Automating Ea Configuration: The Parent Selection Stage, Ekaterina Smorodkina, Daniel R. Tauritz

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the obstacles to Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) fulfilling their promise as easy to use general-purpose problem solvers, is the difficulty of correctly configuring them for specific problems such as to obtain satisfactory performance. Having a mechanism for automatically configuring parameters and operators of every stage of the evolutionary life-cycle would give EAs a more widely spread popularity in the non-expert community. This paper investigates automatic configuration of one of the stages of the evolutionary life-cycle, the parent selection, via a new concept of semi-autonomous parent selection, where mate selection operators are encoded and evolved as in Genetic Programming. We …

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the sixteenth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. The Fact Book provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Dessication Stress, Steven C. Hand, Michael A. Menze Sep 2007

Dessication Stress, Steven C. Hand, Michael A. Menze

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The threat of desiccation for organisms inhabiting the intertidal zone occurs during emersion at low tides or when organisms are positioned in the high intertidal zone, where wetting occurs primarily by spring tides, storm waves, and spray. Drying due to evaporative water loss is the most common mechanism for dehydration, although during winter in northern temperate regions freezing can also occur, which reduces the liquid water in extracellular fluids and can lead to intracellular dehydration in multicellular organisms. Freezing tolerance has been reported and characterized for a number of intertidal invertebrates, including gastropods such as an air-breathing snail and a …

Ufuzzy Prediction Models In Measurement, Leon Reznik, Vladik Kreinovich Sep 2007

Ufuzzy Prediction Models In Measurement, Leon Reznik, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The paper investigates a feasibility of fuzzy models application in measurement procedures. It considers the problem of measurement information fusion from different sources, when one of the sources provides predictions regarding approximate values of the measured variables or their combinations. Typically this information is given by an expert but may be mined from available data also. This information is formalized as fuzzy prediction models and is used in combination with the measurement results to improve the measurement accuracy. The properties of the modified estimates are studied in comparison with the conventional ones. The conditions when fuzzy models application can achieve …

Drought— But Not Dust Bowl, Mike Mccurry, Trevor Brooks, Donna Hess Sep 2007

Drought— But Not Dust Bowl, Mike Mccurry, Trevor Brooks, Donna Hess

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

In 2006, fears that the drought in South Dakota would be worse than that of the 1930s made the pages of the New York Times (1). Indeed, this 21st Century drought is serious but, in terms of sheer human misery, it doesn’t match what was called the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and the Dirty Thirties. Back when South Dakota State University was South Dakota A&M, rural sociologists conducted studies of the Dust Bowl, so now we can compare the two droughts. “A Graphic Summary of the Relief Situation in South Dakota (1930-1935)” shows numbers of people on relief, number …

A Role For Shps-1/Sirpα In Concanavalin A-Dependent Production Of Mmp-9, Arm R. Amin, M. Helal Uddin Biswas, Takeshi Senga, Gen-Sheng Feng, Reiji Kannagi, Munna L. Agarwal, Michinari Hamaguchi

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

SHPS‐1/SIRPα1 is a transmembrane glycoprotein that belongs to the immunoglobulin (Ig) super family. In the present study, we show that SHPS‐1 strongly associates with Concanavalin A (Con A), a plant lectin obtained from jack beans. Further studies with SHPS‐1 mutants reveal that the extracellular domain of SHPS‐1 containing the Ig sequence is responsible for its association with Con A. Con A treatment induces cross‐linking and multimerization of the SHPS‐1 protein in the plasma membrane, accompanied by its tyrosine phosphorylation and recruitment of SHP‐2. In contrast, Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA), another lectin obtained from castor bean, does not bind or activate …

Southern Nevada Health District Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program Lead Poisoning Elimination Plan, Southern Nevada Health District, Strategic Advisory Coalition

Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy Reports

On August 2, 2006, the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) was awarded a 5-year grant by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under its Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP). The grant award was unprecedented in the State of Nevada and was made available to the SNHD via approval from the State to act as its bona fide agent. The primary goal of the grant was to develop this Childhood Lead Poisoning Strategic Elimination Plan (EP) in support of CDC’s overarching goal of eliminating childhood lead poisoning by the year 2010.

Floral Biology Of Physaria Ludoviciana (Brassicaceae), A Plant Rare To The Midwest, Ann E. Claerbout, Janice M. Coons, Henry R. Owen, Kenneth R. Robertson

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Physaria ludoviciana (Brassicaceae) is rare in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Environmental effects on floral development are unclear. Both self-compatibility and self-incompatibility occur within Physaria species. Objectives were to describe flowers, to determine how photoperiod affects flower development, and to predict whether flowers are self-compatible or self-incompatible. For photoperiods, greenhouse-grown plants were placed in either 16 or 8 hr photoperiods. Inflorescences and open flowers were counted weekly. For pollination, flowers were self-pollinated or cross-pollinated. Plants developed inflorescences after 20 and 28 d in long and short days, respectively. Inflorescences/plant increased for both photoperiods throughout the study. In short days, plants produced …

Animal Mind: Science, Philosophy, And Ethics, Bernard E. Rollin Sep 2007

Animal Mind: Science, Philosophy, And Ethics, Bernard E. Rollin

Sentience Collection

Although 20th-century empiricists were agnostic about animal mind and consciousness, this was not the case for their historical ancestors – John Locke, David Hume, Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill, and, of course, Charles Darwin and George John Romanes. Given the dominance of the Darwinian paradigm of evolutionary continuity, one would not expect belief in animal mind to disappear. That it did demonstrates that standard accounts of how scientific hypotheses are overturned – i.e., by empirical disconfirmation or by exposure of logical flaws – is inadequate. In fact, it can be demonstrated that belief in animal mind disappeared as a result …
