Primary Caregiving Fathers : I Was An Interloper In A Woman's World, Meghan L. Cavanaugh Sep 2007

Primary Caregiving Fathers : I Was An Interloper In A Woman's World, Meghan L. Cavanaugh

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study sought to ascertain how fathers who are primary caregivers understand their roles as fathers and caregivers. This qualitative, exploratory study aimed to expand the body of knowledge on primary caregiving fathers, which has, to date, largely focused on outcomes-based research. Heterosexual, married men with children under five years of age, who had been primary caregivers for at least six months, were recruited from Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York. Twelve primary caregiving fathers participated in this study. Questions focused on such topics as: 1) the decision-making process; 2) what the participants understood their roles as fathers and primary …

Trip-Level Analysis Of Efficiency Changes In Oregon’S Deepwater Trawl Fishery, David Tomberlin, Garth Holloway Sep 2007

Trip-Level Analysis Of Efficiency Changes In Oregon’S Deepwater Trawl Fishery, David Tomberlin, Garth Holloway

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In 2003, an industry-financed, government-administered buyback of trawl fishing permits and vessels took place on the US West Coast, resulting in the retirement of about one-third of the limited-entry trawl fleet. The lack of cost data in this fishery precludes an analysis of how the buyback has affected profitability, but changes in technical efficiency can provide some insight into the program’s effects. This paper, the first of a planned series of analyses of the buyback’s effect on technical efficiency in the trawl fleet, applies stochastic frontier analysis to assess whether technical efficiency changed perceptibly after 2003. We adopt a hierarchical …

Improving Neural Network Classification Training, Michael Edwin Rimer Sep 2007

Improving Neural Network Classification Training, Michael Edwin Rimer

Theses and Dissertations

The following work presents a new set of general methods for improving neural network accuracy on classification tasks, grouped under the label of classification-based methods. The central theme of these approaches is to provide problem representations and error functions that more directly improve classification accuracy than conventional learning and error functions. The CB1 algorithm attempts to maximize classification accuracy by selectively backpropagating error only on misclassified training patterns. CB2 incorporates a sliding error threshold to the CB1 algorithm, interpolating between the behavior of CB1 and standard error backpropagation as training progresses in order to avoid prematurely saturated network weights. CB3 …

A Wireless, Passive Sensor For Quantifying Packaged Food Quality, Ee Lim Tan, Wen Ni Ng, Ranyuan Shao, Brandon D. Pereles, Keat Ghee Ong

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

This paper describes the fabrication of a wireless, passive sensor based on aninductive-capacitive resonant circuit, and its application for in situ monitoring of thequality of dry, packaged food such as cereals, and fried and baked snacks. The sensor ismade of a planar inductor and capacitor printed on a paper substrate. To monitor foodquality, the sensor is embedded inside the food package by adhering it to the package’sinner wall; its response is remotely detected through a coil connected to a sensor reader. Asfood quality degrades due to increasing humidity inside the package, the paper substrateabsorbs water vapor, changing the capacitor’s capacitance …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Background

Metastasis is a process by which tumors spread from primary organs to other sites in the body and is the major cause of death for cancer patients. The ovarian cancer G protein–coupled receptor 1 (OGR1) gene has been shown to be expressed at lower levels in metastatic compared with primary prostate cancer tissues.

Methods

We used an orthotopic mouse metastasis model, in which we injected PC3 metastatic human prostate cancer cells stably transfected with empty vector (vector-PC3) or OGR1-expressing vector (OGR1-PC3) into the prostate lobes of athymic or NOD/SCID mice (n = 3–8 mice per group). Migration of PC3 …

Phenylalanyl-Trna Synthetase Editing Defects Result In Efficient Mistranslation Of Phenylalanine Codons As Tyrosine, Jiqiang Ling, Srujana S. Yadavalli, Michael Ibba Sep 2007

Phenylalanyl-Trna Synthetase Editing Defects Result In Efficient Mistranslation Of Phenylalanine Codons As Tyrosine, Jiqiang Ling, Srujana S. Yadavalli, Michael Ibba

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Translational quality control is monitored at several steps, including substrate selection by aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs), and discrimination of aminoacyl-tRNAs by elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu) and the ribosome. Phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetase (PheRS) misactivates Tyr but is able to correct the mistake using a proofreading activity named editing. Previously we found that overproduction of editing-defective PheRS resulted in Tyr incorporation at Phe-encoded positions in vivo , although the misreading efficiency could not be estimated. This raised the question as to whether or not EF-Tu and the ribosome provide further proofreading mechanisms to prevent mistranslation of Phe codons by Tyr. Here we show that, …

2007 Engr333/Biol354 Project Assignment, Matthew K. Heun

ENGR 333

The Fall 2007 semester ENGR333 project involved a collaboration with students in BIOL354, taught by my colleague Dave Warners. We asked our students “What would it take to make Calvin College carbon neutral?”

This project resulted in the first-ever carbon dioxide emissions and sequestration assessment of Calvin College, attached below.

The student presenters animated the pie charts, and an audible gasp filled the hall when the imbalance between carbon emissions and carbon sequestration became clear.

The students also studied potential routes to carbon neutrality, one of which was a green revolving fund.

This class project resulted in a co-authored publication …

Hormones In The Field: Evolutionary Endocrinology Of Juvenile Hormone And Ecdysteroids In Field Populations Of The Wing-Dimorphic Cricket Gryllus Firmus, Anthony J. Zera, Zangwu Zhao, Katherine Kaliseck Sep 2007

Hormones In The Field: Evolutionary Endocrinology Of Juvenile Hormone And Ecdysteroids In Field Populations Of The Wing-Dimorphic Cricket Gryllus Firmus, Anthony J. Zera, Zangwu Zhao, Katherine Kaliseck

Anthony Zera Publications

Virtually no published information exists on insect endocrine traits in natural populations, which limits our understanding of endocrine microevolution. We characterized the hemolymph titers of juvenile hormone (JH) and ecdysteroids (ECDs), two key insect hormones, in field-collected short-winged, flightless (SW) and long-winged, flight-capable (LW(f)) morphs of the cricket Gryllus firmus. The JH titer exhibited a dramatic circadian rhythm in the LW(f) morph but was temporally constant in the flightless SW morph. This pattern was consistent in each of three years; in young, middle-aged, and older G. firmus; and in three other cricket species. The ECD titer was considerably …
