Differentiation For The Gifted In American Islamic Schools, F. A. K. Al-Lawati, Scott L. Hunsaker
Differentiation For The Gifted In American Islamic Schools, F. A. K. Al-Lawati, Scott L. Hunsaker
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
A brief narrative description of the journal article, document, or resource. This research focuses on teacher instructional and curricular practices in gifted students' experiences in Islamic schools in the United States. Surveys were administered at private, full-time Islamic elementary schools to determine the extent to which differentiation practices for meeting the needs of gifted students and the integration of Islamic values were employed. Findings suggest that Islamic schools in the United States have limited programs for gifted students. A majority of teachers in Islamic schools differentiate little between gifted and average students in instructional strategies. When differentiation occurs, it is …
A Model Of Late Long-Term Potentiation Simulates Aspects Of Memory Maintenance, Paul Smolen
A Model Of Late Long-Term Potentiation Simulates Aspects Of Memory Maintenance, Paul Smolen
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Late long-term potentiation (L-LTP) denotes long-lasting strengthening of synapses between neurons. L-LTP appears essential for the formation of long-term memory, with memories at least partly encoded by patterns of strengthened synapses. How memories are preserved for months or years, despite molecular turnover, is not well understood. Ongoing recurrent neuronal activity, during memory recall or during sleep, has been hypothesized to preferentially potentiate strong synapses, preserving memories. This hypothesis has not been evaluated in the context of a mathematical model representing ongoing activity and biochemical pathways important for L-LTP. In this study, ongoing activity was incorporated into two such models - …
How A Marriage Discrimination Amendment Would Disrespect Democracy In Minnesota, Anthony S. Winer
How A Marriage Discrimination Amendment Would Disrespect Democracy In Minnesota, Anthony S. Winer
Faculty Scholarship
The proposed marriage discrimination amendment to the Minnesota Constitution is profoundly anti-democratic. It is extremely wide-ranging in its scope, it obliterates the opportunity of the LGBT community to legislatively advance its interests in the area, it falsely assumes characteristics of the state judiciary that do not in fact exist, and it is drafted with language that is particularly hostile to LGBT concerns and democracy in general. It was a triumph for reason and democracy that this amendment was defeated in 2006. It should never be introduced again. In the unfortunate event that it is introduced again, it should be resoundingly …

Research objectives. Psychophysical acceleration threshold is a tool for detecting deficits in dynamic postural control. Our lab has shown differences in the acceleration threshold among young adults, elderly adults, and elderly adults with diabetes. Electromyography, Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments, and hearing tests investigate the underlying physiological mechanisms for the detriments in postural control. Due to peri-sway perturbations, the motion of a person's sway affects the signal to noise ratio for perturbed stance. Since increases in sway range accompany postural instabilities, sway entrainment will allow us to investigate changes in acceleration threshold at different points in sway. The center of pressure, observed …

New Meadows Lake, Brunswick And West Bath, Maine: Model Analysis Of Expected Plant Communities Response To Potential Tidal Restoration Conditions, Raymond A. Konisky
Publications
The restoration of plant communities in New Meadows Lake in Brunswick and West Bath, Maine, was evaluated for potential conditions associated with increased tidal flux at the State Road causeway. This work was performed using a spatial restoration model developed and tested at the University of New Hampshire. This model was used to predict expected plant community composition and distribution associated with changes in the lake’s potential hydrologic regime.

Analysis Of Prehistoric Burials At The Snidow Site (46mc1), Mercer County, West Virginia, Rachel J. Crawford
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The Snidow Site (46-MC-1) is a Late Prehistoric village site containing evidence of palisade lines, house structures and numerous prehistoric burials. Most of the burials at the site consisted of infants and subadults, with only a couple of burials being of mature adults. The analysis of the grave goods and the human skeletal remains helps archaeologists identify such things as burials rites, social organization, and status of the individuals. Archaeological excavations and technical laboratory methods were used in analyzing the artifacts associated with the Snidow site. The main objective in this analysis is to date the material, analyze the artifacts …
Evolvable Reconfigurable Hardware Framework For Edge Detection, Nader I. Rafla
Evolvable Reconfigurable Hardware Framework For Edge Detection, Nader I. Rafla
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Systems on Reconfigurable Chips contain rich resources of logic, memory, and processor cores on the same fabric. This platform is suitable for implementation of Evolvable Reconfigurable Hardware Architectures (ERHA). It is based on the idea of combining reconfigurable Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) along with genetic algorithms (GA) to perform the reconfiguration operation. This architecture is a suitable candidate for implementation of early-processing stage operators of image processing such as filtering and edge detection. However, there are still fundamental issues need to be solved regarding the on-chip reprogramming of the logic. This paper presents a framework for implementing an evolvable …
Writing Over Silence: The Asian-American In-Between Identity, Amy Scott
Writing Over Silence: The Asian-American In-Between Identity, Amy Scott
BYU Asian Studies Student Journal
My daily routine is pure ritual and thus pure theatre. A routinely perfect production of a comfortable unwritten script: stage dark, save for a dim morning light; spot on tousseled black hair, white pillow, and a blanket nest. Wake up, pad into the bathroom; mise-en-scène a student’s sanctuary. In the bathroom, suit up: costume, makeup/mask, deliberately casual—as if any day could become a beach day. Flip on Elvis and dance while pouring milk onto cold cereal. The door opens, and the play begins en force.

Surveys were conducted between the years of 2005-2006 at several locations in the northern, central and southern parts of West Malaysia to study the polymorphism of R. solanacearum strains. These sites included vegetable and farms with known hosts of the pathogen, such as banana, tomato, eggplant, chili and tobacco. Sample collection was conducted by randomly collecting the suspected plants and weeds, including soil and water samples, from selected areas. The bacterium was detected in all samples by Nested-PCR. The bacteria were isolated from positive samples by using semi-selective media and were further confirmed by biochemical and BIOLOG test. FAME (Fatty …

Salmonella enterica continues to be an important foodborne pathogen worldwide. Serotyping is the fundamental approach in the epidemiology of Salmonella. It consists of the immunologic classification of two surface structures, O-polysaccharide (0 antigen) and flagellin protein (H antigen). Salmonella serotypes are the basis for national surveillance networks and are critical to the identification of outbreaks. The current conventional serotyping procedure is time-consuming, requiring 3 to 5 days or more to fully detennine the serotype, thus delaying infonnation and costing laboratories in overhead. Furthennore, production and quality control of the hundreds of antisera required for serotyping are difficult and time consuming. To …

Relative Role Of Understory And Overstory In Carbon And Nitrogen Cycling In A Southern Appalachian Spruce-Fir Forest, P. T. Moore, H. Van Miegroet, N. S. Nicholas
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
This study investigated aboveground pools and fluxes of biomass, carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) in the overstory and understory of a southern Appalachian red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) – Fraser fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.) forest, following adelgid-induced fir mortality and spruce windthrow. Using fifty 20 m × 20 m plots, stratified by elevation (1700–1900 m), we estimated standing biomass and fluxes of all growth forms from periodic stand inventories (1998–2003), vegetation surveys, and existing or derived allometric equations. Total C and N pools and fluxes were calculated from plant- and tissue-specific C and N concentrations. Total aboveground biomass attained …

Soil Organic Carbon Dynamics Along A Climatic Gradient In A Southern Appalachian Spruce-Fir Forest, C. E. Tewksbury, H. Van Miegroet
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
A field study was conducted in a high-elevation spruce–fir (Picea rubens Sarg. – Abies fraseri (Pursh.) Poir) forest in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to assess the effect of temperature on soil C storage and dynamics. In eight plots along an elevation gradient (1500–1900 m), we measured soil temperature, forest floor and mineral soil C, litter decomposition, soil respiration, and forest floor mean residence time. Mean annual soil temperature and annual degree-days above 5 °C were inversely correlated with elevation. Total soil C (166–241 Mg·ha–1) showed no trend with elevation, while forest floor C accumulation (16.3–35.9 Mg·ha–1) decreased significantly …

The National Park Service (NPS) initiated the Natural Resources Challenge in 1999. The Challenge resulted in the development of research learning centers (RLCs) throughout the country. The RLCs increase the effectiveness and communication of scientific research in national parks by (1) facilitating use of parks for scientific inquiry; (2) supporting sciencebased decision-making; (3) communicating current research information; and (4) promoting resource stewardship through partnerships. RLCs initiate, support, and implement a wide variety of research projects and provide opportunities for university students to work with researchers and park managers. The Great Lakes Research and Education Center initiated a university student research …

Grassland Bird Monitoring At Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, Nebraska: 2001-2006 Status Report, David G. Peitz
United States National Park Service: Publications
Between 2001 and 2006, 54 plots (14 riparian, 40 prairie) were visited during annual surveys to characterize the breeding bird population at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument. Thirty-nine species occurred in riparian habitat, 43 in prairie habitat. Accounting for species overlap between habitats, 60 different species occurred on the monument. Only nine species breed on the monument annually, however: Common Yellowthroat, Mourning Dove, Marsh Wren, Common Snipe, and Mallard in the riparian zone; Grasshopper Sparrow and Lark Sparrow in the prairie; and Red-winged Blackbird and Western Meadowlark in both habitats. Seven grassland obligates were observed: Dickcissel, Grasshopper Sparrow, Horned Lark, …

First Report Of Jefferson's Ground Sloth (Megalonyx Jeffersonii) In North Dakota: Paleobiogeographical And Paleoecological Significance, John W. Hoganson, H. Gregory Mcdonald
United States National Park Service: Publications
A well-preserved ungual of a pes documents the presence of Jefferson’s ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersonii) at the end of the Wisconsinan in North Dakota. This is the 1st report of M. jeffersonii in North Dakota, and one of few records from the upper Great Plains. An accelerator mass spectrometer radiocarbon age of 11,915 6 40 years ago was obtained from the specimen, suggesting that the sloth resided in North Dakota during the Rancholabrean Land Mammal Age, just before extinction of the species. Palynological records from sites near the sloth occurrence and of the same age indicate that it …

Mammal Inventories For Eight National Parks In The Southern Colorado Plateau Network, Michael A. Bogan, Keith Geluso, Shauna Haymond, Ernest W. Valdez
United States National Park Service: Publications
Historically, the Colorado Plateau has been the subject of many geological and biological explorations. J. W. Powell explored and mapped the canyon country of the Colorado River in 1869 (Powell 1961). C. H. Merriam, V. Bailey, M. Cary, and other employees of the Bureau of Biological Survey conducted biological explorations of the area in the late 1800s. In recent times, researchers such as S. D. Durrant (1952), Durrant and Robinson (1962), D. M. Armstrong (1972), J. S. Findley et al. (1975), D. F. Hoffmeister (1986), and J. Fitzgerald et al. (1994) have made considerable contributions to our understanding of the …

Autoregulation Of Gld-2 Cytoplasmic Poly(A) Polymerase, Labib Rouhana, Marvin Wickens
Autoregulation Of Gld-2 Cytoplasmic Poly(A) Polymerase, Labib Rouhana, Marvin Wickens
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Cytoplasmic polyadenylation regulates mRNA stability and translation and is required for early development and synaptic plasticity. The GLD-2 poly(A) polymerase catalyzes cytoplasmic polyadenylation in the germline of metazoa. Among vertebrates, the enzyme is encoded by two isoforms of mRNA that differ only in the length of their 3′-UTRs. Here we focus on regulation of vertebrateGLD-2 mRNA. We show that the 3′-UTR of GLD-2 mRNA elicits its own polyadenylation and translational activation during frog oocyte maturation. We identify the sequence elements responsible for repression and activation, and demonstrate that CPEB and PUF proteins likely mediate repression in the resting oocyte. …
