Spatial Clustering Using The Likelihood Function, April Kerby, David Marx, Ashok Samal, Viacheslav Adamchuk
Spatial Clustering Using The Likelihood Function, April Kerby, David Marx, Ashok Samal, Viacheslav Adamchuk
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Clustering has been widely used as a tool to group multivariate observations that have similar characteristics. However, there have been few attempts at formulating a method to group similar multivariate observations while taking into account their spatial location. This paper proposes a method to spatially cluster similar observations based on their likelihoods. The geographic or spatial location of the observations can be incorporated into the likelihood of the multivariate normal distribution through the variance-covariance matrix. The variance-covariance matrix can be computed using any specific spatial covariance structure. Therefore, observations within a cluster which are spatially close to one another will …

Development Of A Microwave-Assisted Epoxide Aminolysis And Investigation Of The Aza-Cope Rearrangement--Mannich Cyclization For Alkaloid Synthesis, Brendan Roberto D'Souza
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
β-Amino alcohols are important organic compounds with numerous applications. Commonly β-amino alcohols are prepared by ring opening of epoxides using an amine nucleophile and a catalyst or promoter. Ring opening can take place by the SN1 pathway or the SN2 pathway, but no single catalyst or promoter consistently gives SN2 selectivity. Additionally, long reaction times are often required to obtain adequate yields. We have demonstrated that microwave heating reduces reaction times for the aminolysis of both reactive and unreactive, sterically hindered epoxides. These reactions were accomplished with various amines. In all cases, only one equivalent of amine and epoxide were …

Effect Of Counter Ion Concentration Added With Mixture Of Water And Ethylene Glycol On Krafft Temperature Of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, Sateesh Krishna Chand Chundru
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Surfactants are amphiphilic organic compounds having both hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups. Surfactants in solution form aggregates known as micelles. The minimum temperature at which surfactants forms micelles is known as Krafft temperature. The Krafft temperature of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was measured at various counter ion concentrations in two solvent systems, water and 10% ethylene glycol. The Krafft temperature of sodium dodecyl sulfate increased in both water and 10% ethylene glycol with increasing counter ion concentration. The Krafft temperature of sodium dodecyl sulfate in 10% ethylene glycol was higher than the Krafft temperature of sodium dodecyl sulfate in water, at …
Synthesis Of An Isotopically Labelled Analog Of The Antimicrobial Peptide Ll-37, Rajesh Penumatcha
Synthesis Of An Isotopically Labelled Analog Of The Antimicrobial Peptide Ll-37, Rajesh Penumatcha
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
LL-37 is a cationic cathelin-associated broad spectrum antibiotic peptide of human neutrophils. Its mechanism of action is by disruption of the bacterial cell membrane structure. LL-21 is a simplified form of the peptide that contains only the core portion of LL-37, which retains antimicrobial activity and is easier to synthesize. We synthesized an 15N –Val-labeled LL-21 peptide which allows us to perform antimicrobial assays to know the antimicrobial activity of the new peptide LL-21 on various gram positive and gram negative bacteria. We found that our new peptide LL-21 shows good minimum inhibitory concentrations on various gram positive and gram …

Imagination has been introduced as a term of art in discussion of the social and political world. Some years ago James Boyd White turned to it in The Legal Imagination, his monumental work on the foundations of secular law and legal practice. A prominent example of its use today is Charles Taylor's Modern Social Imaginaries, tracing changes in the common mind leading to what we now call modernity. The term can have a large scope and at the same time a rather definite meaning. "Imagination" is at the center of Mark Massa's comments on the contrarian position of the Catholic …

Human Rights & Human Welfare
“9/11 changed everything.” Not really. In fact, there has been far more continuity than change over the past six years in both international and domestic politics. Nonetheless, human rights often have been harmed—although not by terrorism but by “the war on terror.”

"This dissertation proposes the development of a hybrid intelligent system applied to technical analysis based equivolume charting for stock trading. A Neuro-Fuzzy based Genetic Algorithms (NF-GA) system of the Volume Adjusted Moving Average (VAMA) membership functions is introduced to evaluate the effectiveness of using a hybrid intelligent system that integrates neural networks, fuzzy logic, and genetic algorithms techniques for increasing the efficiency of technical analysis based equivolume charting for trading stocks"--Introduction, page 1.
Trans-Phobia And The Relational Production Of Gender, Elaine Craig
Trans-Phobia And The Relational Production Of Gender, Elaine Craig
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
This Article posits that gender identity is in large measure produced relationally and that due to the interpretive, relational nature of gender production many experience gender transgression in others as disruptive to their own sense of identity. It suggests that this results in much of the legal discrimination and oppression faced by individuals whose gender presentation does not conform with dominant gender norms. It further suggests that the disruption in the face of gender transgression is produced by the binary model itself and proposes legal strategies that will assist in a non-binary re-conceptualization of gender.
Sex, Trust, And Corporate Boards, Joan Macleod Heminway
Sex, Trust, And Corporate Boards, Joan Macleod Heminway
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
This Article collects and interprets social science research on sex and trust to shed new light on the emerging case for gender diversity on corporate boards. Specifically, the Article describes social science research findings indicating (1) that men and women trust and are trustworthy on different bases; and (2) that there is a bias against women in chief executive officer (and potentially other corporate leadership) positions. Based on this research, the nature of corporate management and control, and current legal scholarship on corporate governance, the Article asserts that gender diversity on corporate boards may be desirable but difficult to attain. …
Ten Years Of Resistance To Coercive Population Control: Section 601 Of The Iirira Of 1996 To Section 101 Of The Real Id Act Of 2005, Jamie Jordan
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
As a result of China's enactment of the one-child policy in the 1970s, the United States was confronted with a new type of asylum applicant: Chinese citizens who were seeking asylum based on a coercive population control scheme. This Note reviews the United States' attempts to cope with this influx of Chinese asylum applicants. The first section describes the one-child policy and the coercive methods with which it was implemented. Section two outlines how the United States has attempted to offer some protection under its asylum laws to those who have fled China to avoid the one-child policy . Finally, …

Differentiation For The Gifted In American Islamic Schools, F. A. K. Al-Lawati, Scott L. Hunsaker
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
A brief narrative description of the journal article, document, or resource. This research focuses on teacher instructional and curricular practices in gifted students' experiences in Islamic schools in the United States. Surveys were administered at private, full-time Islamic elementary schools to determine the extent to which differentiation practices for meeting the needs of gifted students and the integration of Islamic values were employed. Findings suggest that Islamic schools in the United States have limited programs for gifted students. A majority of teachers in Islamic schools differentiate little between gifted and average students in instructional strategies. When differentiation occurs, it is …
A Model Of Late Long-Term Potentiation Simulates Aspects Of Memory Maintenance, Paul Smolen
A Model Of Late Long-Term Potentiation Simulates Aspects Of Memory Maintenance, Paul Smolen
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Late long-term potentiation (L-LTP) denotes long-lasting strengthening of synapses between neurons. L-LTP appears essential for the formation of long-term memory, with memories at least partly encoded by patterns of strengthened synapses. How memories are preserved for months or years, despite molecular turnover, is not well understood. Ongoing recurrent neuronal activity, during memory recall or during sleep, has been hypothesized to preferentially potentiate strong synapses, preserving memories. This hypothesis has not been evaluated in the context of a mathematical model representing ongoing activity and biochemical pathways important for L-LTP. In this study, ongoing activity was incorporated into two such models - …
How A Marriage Discrimination Amendment Would Disrespect Democracy In Minnesota, Anthony S. Winer
How A Marriage Discrimination Amendment Would Disrespect Democracy In Minnesota, Anthony S. Winer
Faculty Scholarship
The proposed marriage discrimination amendment to the Minnesota Constitution is profoundly anti-democratic. It is extremely wide-ranging in its scope, it obliterates the opportunity of the LGBT community to legislatively advance its interests in the area, it falsely assumes characteristics of the state judiciary that do not in fact exist, and it is drafted with language that is particularly hostile to LGBT concerns and democracy in general. It was a triumph for reason and democracy that this amendment was defeated in 2006. It should never be introduced again. In the unfortunate event that it is introduced again, it should be resoundingly …
