Final Report Overview - Kingston, Stone Environmental Jan 2007

Final Report Overview - Kingston, Stone Environmental

PREP Reports & Publications

The objective of the Kingston project was to revise the town’s wetlands conservation district regulations and create new stormwater regulations. In October 2006 Stone Environmental and New Hampshire Soil Consulting (NHSC) submitted draft language to the Kingston Planning Board. The proposed stormwater regulations were consistent with state and federal stormwater requirements. The main areas covered in the proposed regulations were a prohibition against illicit discharges and illegal dumping to Kingston’s storm drainage system, erosion prevention and sediment control at construction sites, and post-construction (permanent) stormwater control. The proposed stormwater regulations were intended to replace an existing article in Kingston’s code …

On The Limits Of Sexual Health Literacy: Insights From Ugandan Schoolgirls, Shelley Jones, Bonny Norton Jan 2007

On The Limits Of Sexual Health Literacy: Insights From Ugandan Schoolgirls, Shelley Jones, Bonny Norton

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

This article makes the case that current conceptions of sexual health literacy have limited relevance to the Ugandan context because they assume that knowledge of unsafe sexual practices will lead to changes in behavior and lifestyle. Drawing on a longitudinal case study with 15 Ugandan schoolgirls in rural Uganda from August 2004 to September 2006, this study argues that despite being well-informed about the risks and responsibilities of sexual activity, poverty and sexual abuse severely constrained options for these young women. Although many believed in the value of abstaining from sexual activity until marriage, they engaged in transactional sex to …

Storm-Petrels Of The Eastern Pacific Ocean: Species Assembly And Diversity Along Marine Habitat Gradients, Larry B. Spear, David G. Ainley Jan 2007

Storm-Petrels Of The Eastern Pacific Ocean: Species Assembly And Diversity Along Marine Habitat Gradients, Larry B. Spear, David G. Ainley

Ornithological Monographs

Residing in waters just west of the Americas, in a roughly triangular area from about 50°N to 50°S and out along the equator, are 26 distinct taxa of storm-petrels (Hydrobatidae), a diversity far greater for this group than in any equivalent stretch of the world ocean. We sought to understand how so many forms can co-occur within this very poorly known family.

We describe the ranges, at-sea behavior, and marine habitat affinities of 22 (of the 26) distinct forms included within 5 (of 6) genera and 16 (of 20) species of storm-petrel, all of which occur in that portion of …

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Shedding of the Alzheimer amyloid precursor protein (APP) ectodomain can be accelerated by phorbol esters, compounds that act via protein kinase C (PKC) or through unconventional phorbol-binding proteins such as Munc13-1. We have previously demonstrated that application of phorbol esters or purified PKC potentiates budding of APP-bearing secretory vesicles at the trans-Golgi network (TGN) and toward the plasma membrane where APP becomes a substrate for enzymes responsible for shedding, known collectively as alpha-secretase(s). However, molecular identification of the presumptive "phospho-state-sensitive modulators of ectodomain shedding" (PMES) responsible for regulated shedding has been challenging. Here, we examined the effects on …

The Controversy Over The Legacy Highway In Utah: An Opportunity For Invitational Rhetoric, Carlo A. Pedrioli Jan 2007

The Controversy Over The Legacy Highway In Utah: An Opportunity For Invitational Rhetoric, Carlo A. Pedrioli

Faculty Scholarship

Beginning in the mid 1990s, residents of Utah began to debate the merits of the “Legacy Highway,” a large highway that would run near the Great Salt Lake in an attempt to alleviate the clogged commute on Interstate-15, which runs north/south through Salt Lake City, the state’s capital. Perhaps not surprisingly, environmental groups were upset with this proposed governmental project. Groups like the Advocates for Safe and Efficient Transportation and the Utah Department of Transportation faced off against the Sierra Club, Stop the Legacy Highway, and Utahns for Better Transportation. Generous amounts of rhetoric, including public discussion and litigation, resulted …

State Practice In The Management And Allocation Of Transboundary Groundwater Resources In North America, Gabriel Eckstein, Amy Hardberger Jan 2007

State Practice In The Management And Allocation Of Transboundary Groundwater Resources In North America, Gabriel Eckstein, Amy Hardberger

Faculty Articles

Throughout the world, international and state political boundaries divide groundwater resources into politically convenient jurisdictions. Subsurface water, however, does not recognize such borders and flows freely without regard to overlying politics. This disregard for the political dimension, coupled with the growing global importance of fresh water, has the potential for aggravating disputes and conflicts over the use, allocation, and preservation of such resources. To date, widely accepted norms of international law applicable to transboundary aquifers have yet to emerge. However, local and regional agreements, including both formal and unofficial arrangements, suggest the emergence of state practice that should be considered …

Irradiation D Values Of Salmonella Spp. In Diced Tomatoes Dipped In 1% Calcium Chloride, Anuradha Prakash, Nicole Johnson, Denise Foley

Food Science Faculty Articles and Research

Outbreaks of salmonellosis have been associated with eating raw domestic tomatoes. In this study, we examined the efficiency of combined irradiation and a 1% calcium chloride dip to reduce the population of Salmonella enterica strains on diced tomatoes. Tomatoes were contaminated with nalidixic acid-resistant strains of S. Hartford, S. Montevideo, or a mixture of 5 strains (S. Hartford, S. Montevideo, S. Poona, S. Michigan, S. Gaminara). We irradiated tomatoes at various doses up to 0.9 kGy from an electron beam source to conduct a D-value study (decimal reduction time required to eliminate 90% of the organism). Surviving Salmonella populations were …

“The Problem Of Science” In Nietzsche And Heidegger, Babette Babich Jan 2007

“The Problem Of Science” In Nietzsche And Heidegger, Babette Babich

Research Resources

Nietzsche and Heidegger pose important philosophical questions to science and its technological projects. The resultant contributes to what may be called a continental philosophy of science and I argue that only such a rigorously critical approach to the question of science permits a genuinely philosophical reflection on science. The resultant contributes to what may be called a continental philosophy of science and I argue that only such a rigorously critical approach to the question of science permits a genuinely philosophical reflection on science. More than a thoughtful reflection on science, however, the heart of philosophy is also at stake in …

Teflon And An Increased Cancer Risk Remains Unproven In Humans, Jennifer Hitchon Jan 2007

Teflon And An Increased Cancer Risk Remains Unproven In Humans, Jennifer Hitchon

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

DuPont manufactures a non-stick coating for pans brand-named Teflon. Teflon sealed pans make cooking easier - eggs won't stick to the frying pan and cookies won't stick to the cookie sheet. Yet researchers have long worried about negative effects of Teflon and the chemical compounds used to make it, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA): is PFOA a carcinogen? Instead of waiting until the Teflon coating sloughs off in black flakes, should households get rid of their non-stick pans now and return to using PAM and Crisco in mass quantities? PFOA is not exclusively used in Teflon; the chemical is also useful in …
