Accelerating Adoption Of Fire Science And Related Research, Jamie Barbour Jan 2007

Accelerating Adoption Of Fire Science And Related Research, Jamie Barbour

Joint Fire Science Program Research Project Reports

Since its inception in 1998, the Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) has funded over 350 projects. The Joint Fire Science Program has long recognized that the investments made in wildland fire science need to be accompanied by an emphasis on science interpretation and delivery. Program success is ultimately measured by how well information from research efforts is being conveyed to resource managers and end users, and whether this information is improving management decisions. This project introduced a conceptual model for an adaptive process to improve the delivery of scientific information. We developed this process through these steps: 1. Creating a …

A Prescription For California's Ailing Inmate Treatment System: An Independent Corrections Ombudsman, Arthur L. Alarcon Jan 2007

A Prescription For California's Ailing Inmate Treatment System: An Independent Corrections Ombudsman, Arthur L. Alarcon

UC Law Journal

California's prison system is totally broken and in urgent need of reform on many fronts. Over the past twenty-five years, California's inmate population has grown over 500%, the number of institutions has nearly tripled, and prison litigation costs have escalated tremendously. In 2004, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger convened the Corrections Independent Review Panel to assess issues affecting the prison system. The Panel presented a number of possible solutions to the problems faced by California's prisons, but sweeping new reforms are still needed if the entire system is to be overhauled effectively and brought into compliance with constitutional requirements.

Among the …

Corporate Social Responsibility, Sonia R. Zafar Jan 2007

Corporate Social Responsibility, Sonia R. Zafar

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this study is to take a closer look at the debate about corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the emerging importance of such initiatives in the modem business environment. This study sought to answer the question of whether corporate social responsibility is an attainable goal or not? In addition, this study sought to determine whether corporate social responsibility produces tangible benefits for a firm. This study uses examples of businesses such as Wal-Mart, Shell, McDonalds, and British Petroleum to illustrate how implementations of CSR initiatives enhance a company's financial and non-financial metrics. The study also examines reasons why …

Six Sigma : Is It Worth The Hype?, Michael Carew

Honors Capstones

Six Sigma is a process for reduction of variation in processes to a level of 3.4 errors per one million opportunities. The paper analyzes whether or not Six Sigma is worth the hype using several angles. The background and history of Six Sigma along with its beginnings at Motorola and General Electric are examined to establish a foundation for argument. A thorough analysis of Six Sigma usage currently is conducted, and four keys to success are discussed including ability to handle a large capital outlay, commitment, follow through, and a change-based culture. In addition, factors that cause Six Sigma to …

Progressive Lawyering In Politically Depressing Times, Susan Carle Jan 2007

Progressive Lawyering In Politically Depressing Times, Susan Carle

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

INTRODUCTION: Susan Sturm's important work offers a ray of optimism in a contemporary political climate most people of progressive inclinations find somewhat depressing. Sturm examines new models for bringing about institutional re- form without extensive management from legislatures or courts. As Sturm recognizes, resort to litigation as a strategy for increasing gender parity in employment is not a promising option these days, for several sets of reasons. First, as Sturm has explained in an earlier pathbreaking article, judicial decrees are not well suited to addressing "second generation" problems of structural reform of institutions, such as eliminating manifestations of race and …

Based on my early introductions, review of the current strategic plan, initial transition, and meetings with a variety of University constituents, I wish to share with you some thoughts on where the University of New Mexico is currently positioned, and where, together, we will direct this institution during my tenure as University President. In addition to this brief history and vision of UNM, I would also like to share with you some thoughts on how I think we can achieve our goals, and what I can contribute to help us reach them. What follows is a diagram that provides a …

32 In '44: A Management And Environmental Study Of Submarine Construction At Portsmouth Navy Yard During World War Ii, Rodney Keith Watterson

Doctoral Dissertations

After averaging the completion of less than two submarines a year in the 1930s, the Portsmouth Navy Yard completed an astonishing thirty-two submarines in 1944. The yard's outstanding performance during World War II was the product of a highly motivated work force and a management team that thrived in a decentralized wartime shipyard environment. Employing aggressive and innovative management techniques that included employee empowerment, small teams, and mass production techniques to the extent that they could be applied to submarine construction at the time, the shipyard delivered submarines at unprecedented rates.

There were downsides to the shipyard's crowning achievements during …

An Investigation Into The Predictors Of Adoption And Utilization Of Information-Sharing Networks By Local Law Enforcement In Three States, Joe Conrad Saviak Jan 2007

An Investigation Into The Predictors Of Adoption And Utilization Of Information-Sharing Networks By Local Law Enforcement In Three States, Joe Conrad Saviak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT A major change in longstanding police organizational behavior is increasingly evident in the recent emergence of computerized information-sharing networks in public safety. From both theoretical and empirical perspectives, a better understanding of the determinants that can explain and predict the rise and growth of this new and significant development in American policing is needed. A highly limited body of empirical studies has endeavored to validate effective predictors of adoption and utilization of electronic information-sharing networks by local law enforcement agencies. Utilizing an integrated theoretical framework largely built upon Rogers' diffusion of innovations theory, sixteen hypotheses were tested through logistic …

Exploring The Effects Of Corporate Venturing On New Business Creation, Salvatore Sciascia, Fernando G. Alberti, Riccardo De Vita, Alberto Poli

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

One of the main problems of large firms is that they tend to lose their entrepreneurial orientation (EO) once they have grown. The launch of corporate ventures (CV) has been adopted by managers, and studied by scholars, as the means to create new businesses within large companies with a low level of EO. Extensive research on CV has been carried out to understand how these projects can effectively lead to new business creation. However, there are no studies on the effect of CV projects on new business creation after the project has ended. More specifically, scholars have overlooked the prospect …

Developing A Method For Identifying And Reducing Functional Discrepancies Of Information Systems, Jung-Wei Chen Jan 2007

Developing A Method For Identifying And Reducing Functional Discrepancies Of Information Systems, Jung-Wei Chen

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Currently more than half of Electronic Health Record (EHR) projects fail. Most of these failures are not due to flawed technology, but rather due to the lack of systematic considerations of human issues. Among the barriers for EHR adoption, function mismatching among users, activities, and systems is a major area that has not been systematically addressed from a human-centered perspective. A theoretical framework called Functional Framework was developed for identifying and reducing functional discrepancies among users, activities, and systems. The Functional Framework is composed of three models – the User Model, the Designer Model, and the Activity Model. The User …

Valuation And Assessment Of Patents And Patent Portfolios Through Analytical Techniques, 6 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 463 (2007), Michael S. Kramer

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Patents today are essential assets for many companies, especially in high technology industries. Valuation of a patent is often essential in reaching an informed business decision on a matter involving technology. However, the inherent uniqueness of a patent typically makes value assessments complex, costly, and susceptible to inaccuracies. This article presents efficient and cost-effective analytical methods for valuing patents and patent portfolios.

What Hedge Funds Can Teach Corporate America: A Roadmap For Achieving Institutional Investor Oversight, Robert C. Illig Jan 2007

What Hedge Funds Can Teach Corporate America: A Roadmap For Achieving Institutional Investor Oversight, Robert C. Illig

American University Law Review

Hedge funds and other private equity funds are aggressive monitors of corporate America. Their investment strategies are designed to squeeze agency costs and other inefficiencies out of under performing companies. Mutual funds and public pension funds, by contrast, have remained relentlessly passive despite their many resources. Rather than seek to improve the performance of their portfolio companies, they generally prefer to exit any investments that turn sour. Why the difference? In this Article, I compare the business environments and regulatory regimes affecting different types of institutional investors. I conclude that the primary reason that most institutional investors do not better …

The Influence Of Organizational And Governance Structures On The Frequency Of Management Skill Utilization Of Community College Chief Executive Officers In The United States, Timothy R. Oxley Jan 2007

The Influence Of Organizational And Governance Structures On The Frequency Of Management Skill Utilization Of Community College Chief Executive Officers In The United States, Timothy R. Oxley

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Community colleges are purported to be in the midst of a leadership crisis due to the impending retirements of chief executive officers (CEOs) and senior administrators over the next several years. Concurrently, the demands upon CEOs to effectively and efficiently manage their institutions are more critical now in an effort to balance the demands placed upon them by public policy and institutional stakeholders. The purpose of this research was to examine the influence of institutional context, governance and organizational structures, on the frequency with which CEOs utilized certain management skills. The study population was community college CEOs as identified by …

Ethical Codes And Cultural Context: Ensuring Legal Ethics In The Global Law Firm, Laurence Etherington, Robert Lee Jan 2007

Ethical Codes And Cultural Context: Ensuring Legal Ethics In The Global Law Firm, Laurence Etherington, Robert Lee

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

There are doubtless many practical and professional problems that arise in the global legal practice, but this paper suggests that not least of these are issues of legal ethics, in part generated by the global context and not easily amenable to resolution by reference to any single code within the "home" or "host" jurisdiction. For example, there may be difficulties in isolating precisely what those ethical obligations might comprise. These obligations might be rooted in the requirements of local law, but they might arise equally from the values and expectations of the client, or from other lawyers whether inside or …
