Implementing Peer Coaching In A State Funded Pre-Kindergarten Program: An Autoethnography, Darilyn Mercadel Butler

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This autoethnography - rooted in the qualitative tradition of field research, explored the life experiences of the researcher which subsequently led to the preparation, implementation, and analysis of a professional development program. The purpose of this study was to reflect upon whether or not a peer coaching program would enhance the development of pre-kindergarten teachers' emergent literacy strategies in the Greater New Orleans area. This autoethnography employed the author as the research tool in order to understand the researcher's personal self within the context of the professional development. The guiding question of this study is as follows -"does utilizing peer …

The Child Soldier Experience In Uzodinma Iweala's "Beasts Of No Nation", Nicole Gurley May 2007

The Child Soldier Experience In Uzodinma Iweala's "Beasts Of No Nation", Nicole Gurley

English

Uzodinma Iweala's Beasts of No Nation plays an integral role in raising awareness of the child soldier epidemic. It portrays this global issue through the eyes of Agu, the child narrator. This thesis attempts to understand the extent to which Agu's experiences with the rebel group as well as his participation in war affect him. Agu struggles to maintain his identity during his exposure to and forced involvement in rape, thievery, and murder. His age leaves him particularly vulnerable to the ravages of war, and although Agu succeeds in maintaining some of his identity, he is eventually alienated from himself …

Interpreters Perspective On Intercultural Communication, Gulchin F. Seyidova May 2007

Interpreters Perspective On Intercultural Communication, Gulchin F. Seyidova

Communication

Although Translation/Interpreting Studies and Intercultural Communication Studies appear to be closely related fields of studies, both seem to have ignored their potential connectedness. In Interpreting Studies, scholars and practitioners have begun to recognize that interpreters have intercultural communication functions and do not simply automatically convey messages across parties. In Intercultural Communication Studies, scholars have neglected examining intercultural communication in the interpreting context. This study explores professional Azerbaijani interpreters' lived experiences of intercultural challenges they face in the interpreting setting to help better understand both the communication processes involved in interpreting, and interpreting as a scene for intercultural communication. Conversational interviews …

Whence These Farmers?: El Pantano Bioarchaeology And The Advent Of Agriculture In West Mexico, Nicholas S. Corduan May 2007

Whence These Farmers?: El Pantano Bioarchaeology And The Advent Of Agriculture In West Mexico, Nicholas S. Corduan

Anthropology

This masters thesis in dental anthropology and bioarchaeology examines discrete, non-metric dental data collected from skeletal remains of a Middle Formative era Mexican population at EI Pantano. This site is situated in Jalisco, West Mexico, and represents one of the earliest archaeological examples of transitional agriculture for this area. Materials recovered from the burials suggest that the yet-undiscovered settlement whose people used the cemetery had complex interactions with diverse Mexican groups, including the OImec-linked site of Tlatilco in the Valley of Mexico, and also with groups as far away as Guatemala and the Andes mountains. Phenetic analysis of dental morphology …

The Kandik Map: Cultural Exchange Along The Yukon River, Linda R. Johnson

Arctic and Northern Studies

The Kandik Map drawn in 1880 by Yukon Indian Paul Kandik and annotated by French Canadian fur trader François Mercier and U.S. Census Agent Ivan Petroff is a unique record in the documentary history of Northwestern North America. It traces the Yukon, Tanana, and Kuskokwim Rivers from their headwaters to the Pacific, showing trading posts, trails, and place names in several Athabascan languages, as well as French and English. As one of the oldest maps of the Alaska-Yukon borderlands it documents indigenous knowledge and the dynamic cultural exchange between Native residents and non-native newcomers along the Yukon River prior to …

Kno.e.sis Publications

In this paper we extend the state-of-the-art in utilizing background knowledge for supervised classification by exploiting the semantic relationships between terms explicated in Ontologies. Preliminary evaluations indicate that the new approach generally improves precision and recall, more so for hard to classify cases and reveals patterns indicating the usefulness of such background knowledge.

Comparative Study Of Federation Proposals For Nepal, Vijaya R. Sharma May 2007

Comparative Study Of Federation Proposals For Nepal, Vijaya R. Sharma

Liberal Democracy Nepal Bulletin

An elected constituent assembly is planned to frame a new constitution of Nepal. This paper argues for a federal system of governance and reviews various federal proposals that have been made so far, some of which suggest territorial subdivision and some suggest cultural subdivision of the country. This paper argues that a cultural subdivision offers a greater promise of durable peace and stability of federation than a territorial subdivision and would also help improve economic efficiency in delivery of governmental services. Further, it proposes a cultural federation of 15 small size states, with directly elected governors in the states and …

The Other Mother: An Artist's Conception, Dean Schmiedel May 2007

The Other Mother: An Artist's Conception, Dean Schmiedel

Theses

The Other Mother represents the act of human conception, birth, and nurturing from an artist/man/father’s perspective. The work attempts to reconcile the divide between this ultimate creation and the creative process that we confront through art. The result is a masculinized nursery composed of a chopperized pram, a crib and rocker with hard edges and superhero symbols, and walls decorated with oversized, graphic images. To create the pieces in this installation, I worked closely with men in the traditional masculine trades of automobile customizing, welding, woodcraft, and upholstering. The resulting work is flashy and clean, without the hominess and earthy …

Immunological Effects Of Written Disclosure In Athletes, Kristen Thatcher May 2007

Immunological Effects Of Written Disclosure In Athletes, Kristen Thatcher

Honors Theses

Many studies have demonstrated the health benefits of written disclosure of traumatic or stressful events. These benefits include improved psychological well-being, fewer health clinic visits, shorter hospital stays after surgery, and increased immune function. In athletes, high immune function is necessary to ward off illness during training and competition, but much research has shown that athletes tend to have lowered immune function. Therefore, writing about traumatic events may be a way for athletes to remain healthy during their seasons. To test this hypothesis, 21 varsity athletes and 15 individuals who exercised less than three hours per week participated in the …

Divergent Effect Of Social Cohesion On Economic Growth In East Asia And Latin America, Horacio Diaz Adda May 2007

Divergent Effect Of Social Cohesion On Economic Growth In East Asia And Latin America, Horacio Diaz Adda

Honors Theses

In this paper I explore the link between social cohesion and economic growth in Latin America and East Asia. Unlike previous studies, I allow for different slope parameters for the different regions. Using ethno linguistic fractionalization as a proxy, I find that social cohesion has not played an important role in determining growth outcomes in Latin America. While social cohesion has not had a direct effect on growth nor institutions in Latin America, it helps explain a large degree of the growth differentials among Asian countries. Social cohesion mostly impacts growth through its effect on institutional quality. However, these results …

The goals were to explore the patterns of instructional effects on motivation and learning in each country and to examine cultural differences and similarities. Participants consisted of 108 students (55 females, 53 males) and 9 physics teachers in the United States and …

Hybrid Concatenated-Formant Expressive Speech Synthesizer For Kinesensic Voices, Nishant Chandra May 2007

Hybrid Concatenated-Formant Expressive Speech Synthesizer For Kinesensic Voices, Nishant Chandra

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional and commercial speech synthesizers are incapable of synthesizing speech with proper emotion or prosody. Conveying prosody in artificially synthesized speech is difficult because of extreme variability in human speech. An arbitrary natural language sentence can have different meanings, depending upon the speaker, speaking style, context, and many other factors. Most concatenated speech synthesizers use phonemes, which are phonetic units defined by the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The 50 phonemes in English are standardized and unique units of sound, but not expression. An earlier work proposed the analogy between speech and music ? ?speech is music, music is speech.? The …

Trophies Or Treasures: The Burden Of Choice For Mothers, Wives, And Daughters In Washington Square, The Portrait Of A Lady, And The Bostonians., Melissa C. Huisman May 2007

Trophies Or Treasures: The Burden Of Choice For Mothers, Wives, And Daughters In Washington Square, The Portrait Of A Lady, And The Bostonians., Melissa C. Huisman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the world of Henry James's novels, characters are often placed in difficult situations where their happiness depends on their ability to make a free choice. Female characters are manipulated and diminished by a patriarchal system that not only seeks to subordinate their will, but also to objectify them, to place them on the shelf as a trophy. Fathers and husbands are typically the controlling agents, but James also presents women who appropriate the dominating role.

With varying degrees of success, each female character rejects the status of trophy. Instead, each attempts to make choices and determine her own future. …

Temperament And Early Communication In Premature Children., Nina King May 2007

Temperament And Early Communication In Premature Children., Nina King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Premature children are at greater risk for developing communication delays than full-term children, although it is not inevitable. Recent research links specific temperament characteristics to early language development. Thus, temperament may provide a way to identify premature children who are at increased risk. The first purpose of this study was to determine if temperament characteristics of premature children are the same as full-term children when measured by the Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised. The second purpose was to determine if temperament and language acquisition, as measured by the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory: Words and Gestures, are linked in premature infants …
