Beyond Fidelity: The Translation Process In Two Adaptations Of Juan Marsé’S El Embrujo De Shanghai, Jessie Louise Christensen May 2007

Beyond Fidelity: The Translation Process In Two Adaptations Of Juan Marsé’S El Embrujo De Shanghai, Jessie Louise Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

In the past, the study of film adapted from literature has focused largely on the question of fidelity. This thesis explores new ways to look at the relationship between literature and film by showing how concepts from the field of translation studies, particularly literary translation, can enrich the study of adaptation theory. An application is made to the case of Spanish novelist Juan Marsé’s work El embrujo de Shanghai, which has been adapted to film by Fernando Trueba and to screenplay by Victor Érice. Rather than taking a hierarchical approach to the novel and its two variations, a comparative approach …

My Search For A Meaningful Information Literacy Course: A Drama In Three Acts, Jan Coe May 2007

My Search For A Meaningful Information Literacy Course: A Drama In Three Acts, Jan Coe

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

My synthesis project began as a personal and professional mission to help students decipher their library assignments and learn how to do research in general. In pursuing this goal, I learned a lot about 'information literacy' but I also learned about the reasons being information literate is important to me: it is a gestalt of a critical thinker. I discovered that - beyond becoming adept in the mechanics of information retrieval - what I really wanted for my students are the very things I value and enjoy doing myself: learning about communities of discourse; mulling over and asking questions about …

Scml: A Structural Representation For Chinese Characters, Daniel G. Peebles May 2007

Scml: A Structural Representation For Chinese Characters, Daniel G. Peebles

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Chinese characters are used daily by well over a billion people. They constitute the main writing system of China and Taiwan, form a major part of written Japanese, and are also used in South Korea. Anything more than a cursory glance at these characters will reveal a high degree of structure to them, but computing systems do not currently have a means to operate on this structure. Existing character databases and dictionaries treat them as numerical code points, and associate with them additional `hand-computed' data, such as stroke count, stroke order, and other information to aid in specific searches. Searching …

Transcultural Nursing Care Journey To Ecuador: Designing A Transcultural Education Course For Registered Nurses, Debra S. Zaffke May 2007

Transcultural Nursing Care Journey To Ecuador: Designing A Transcultural Education Course For Registered Nurses, Debra S. Zaffke

Theses and Graduate Projects

This paper describes an educational program for Registered Nurses to learn transcultural nursing care while in Ecuador. The program is based on Leininger's Culture Care Diversity and Universality nursing theory. The project framework is based on her Sunrise Enabler to Discover Culture Care. The Observation-Participation-Reflection enabler from Leininger's ethnonursing research methods is utilized as a technique to learn about the people and lifeways of Ecuador and it serves as a reliable tool to tease out information that relates to the general principles of transcultural care nursing. The paper outlines the necessity of transcultrual nursing education for practicing nurses, the scope …

A Maslovian Approach To The Motivations Of Shakespeare’S Transvestite Heroines In The Two Gentelmen Of Verona, As You Like It, And The Merchant Of Venice, Angela Eward-Mangione May 2007

A Maslovian Approach To The Motivations Of Shakespeare’S Transvestite Heroines In The Two Gentelmen Of Verona, As You Like It, And The Merchant Of Venice, Angela Eward-Mangione

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

"Motivation" is the force that drives an individual to perform a certain action. Abraham Maslow (1908-1970), an American psychologist profoundly influenced by the existential and teleological paradigms, expounded a motivation theory that remains precise and replicable, as well as applicable to other spheres of study, including the humanities. Indeed, psychology experts and non-specialists are by and large familiar with Maslow's Pyramid of Human Needs. Moreover, despite the abundance of literary criticism that utilizes Freudian-based theory to analyze the motivations of literary characters, critics have largely neglected the use of other paradigms, including Maslow's. In this thesis, I use Maslow's texts …

Abstractness Of Mediating Artifacts As Probes, Young-Ae Hahn, Judith Gregory May 2007

Abstractness Of Mediating Artifacts As Probes, Young-Ae Hahn, Judith Gregory

Nordes Conference Series

This research investigates mediating artifacts as probes that have been used to explore current and future user needs in knowledge exchange between design researchers and the users of future products and services. Four types of mediating artifacts as probes are reviewed: Design Games, Cultural Probes, Generative Techniques, and Behavioral Prototyping. Design researchers variously found the following methodological advantages of mediating artifacts: (a) eliciting situated user needs, (b) eliciting divergent perspectives and needs, (c) supporting participants’ idea generation that leads to design solution ideas, (d) documenting elicited concrete and abstract types of knowledge, (e) revealing propositional, practical and sensuous knowledge, and …

Applying Probes As An Inspirational Research Tool For Fashion Design, Leena Lundgaard, Ulrik Martin Larsen

Nordes Conference Series

In general fashion design is a design fi eld where users are seldom directly involved in the design process. It is only when developing very specifi ctypes of garments like uniforms or high performance athletic wear, fashion designers will consult end users to gain knowledge about specific demands or specifications. In this article we will report from a project where we have developed and used probes as an integrated part of the design process.

New Representation Techniques For Designing In A Systemic Perspective, Nicola Morelli, Christian Tollestrup May 2007

New Representation Techniques For Designing In A Systemic Perspective, Nicola Morelli, Christian Tollestrup

Nordes Conference Series

Global production is challenging industrial production to generate solutions that adequate global production to a local systemic conditions. In some case the challenge consists in producing highly individualised and localised solutions, which require new forms of cooperation with local actors, including local service providers and final users. In some case the level of involvement requested to the new actors is high, they can therefore be considered as co-workers in the production of the final solution and the overall view of the production system should be extended to include them as co-producers.

Theses

This study compared two technical sign movie formats, Quicktime (2D) and threedimentional animations (3D) and examined recall, comprehension, and rehearsal time of signs. There was no significant difference found between the formats for comprehension and recall. However, for rehearsal the high school students had significantly higher sign production scores after viewing 2D signs as comparaed to 3D signs. In addition, there was a significant difference found relating to gender. Girls scored significantly higher on all three measures, regardless of the movie format. In addition, students with more than two years experience with ASL scored significantly higher than those with less …

Putting Makeup On Dead People, Jennifer Violi May 2007

Putting Makeup On Dead People, Jennifer Violi

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Putting Makeup on Dead People is a collection of ten short stories narrated by Donna that relate key moments in her life from early childhood through her mid-thirties. Because of the author's belief in the circularity of time and of what makes up human identity (what we do, what happens to us, to whom we are related), the stories do not progress chronologically. The collection pays particular attention to Donna's relationship with key family members: her father Nicky, her mother Martha, her Uncle Lou, her Aunt Selena, and her siblings, Linnie and B. Many of the stories also attend to …

Competition And Conflict: Maryland's First Ten Years, Matthew Edwards May 2007

Competition And Conflict: Maryland's First Ten Years, Matthew Edwards

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

England's first settlers arrived in Virginia hoping to achieve the same success Spaniards had in the West Indies. Yet, North America held little wealth in the forms of gold or silver and the hopes of finding a Northwest Passage proved fruitless as well. For over ten years British holdings in the New World showed little sign of producing profits. It was not until 1614, and the introduction of tobacco, that Virginians finally discovered a commodity that could be sold back in Europe. Tobacco cultivation, however, was not the only activity that offered the possibility of wealth. Between the years of …

Mirrormirror, Alfred Podesta

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the work I am presenting for my thesis exhibition I have culled the rich fantasies and experiences of my childhood and re-contextualized specific bits of those through the filters of adulthood, experience and education. The central work in this exhibition is a series of sculptures titled Self-Portrait as Bunnies. In each of these works I present adult-sized and adult-featured versions of myself in child-like poses. This thesis will primarily be involved in examining this series and will do so in two ways. First by introducing the works -- what they are, how they are made, the evolution of ideas …
