A Comparative Study Of International And American Study Abroad Students' Expectations And Experiences With Host Countries., Evelyn Domville-Roach
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This was a comparative study of international and American study abroad students' experiences and expectations with the host countries. The rationale for this study was to acquire a deeper understanding of different experiences of students who study abroad and to understand whether their expectations of the host country have an impact on their experiences. An opportunity sample of American study abroad and international students was selected from the United States student population and their expectations and experiences of the host country compared. The study addressed 6 research questions, using a mixed-method approach. The principal instrument for the investigation was the …
Pullout And Inclusion Programs For Esl Students:A Study Of Reading Achievement, Lishu Yin
Pullout And Inclusion Programs For Esl Students:A Study Of Reading Achievement, Lishu Yin
Theses and Dissertations
The enrollment of English as a Second Language (ESL) students from Pre-K through Grade 12 increased 65% over a 10-year period from the 1993-1994 to the 2003-2004 school year. The number of ESL students in 2003-2004 was 10.1% of the total public school enrollment. ESL students are placed in different educational programs. Pullout programs have served low readers including English language learners (ELL). In the last 10 years, inclusion programs have gradually replaced pullout programs in some states. Little research has been conducted on the effectiveness of ESL programs on reading achievement. This study compared the improvements in reading of …

A Comparison Of Multiple Intelligence Preferences And Performance On Standardized Tests, Suzanne Marie White
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to look for correlations between levels of preference for multiple intelligences and performance rates on standardized tests, as determined by utilizing the Teele Inventory of Multiple Intelligences and standardized test scores. The research was conducted in small rural elementary school in southern New Jersey where the researcher was the art teacher. The sample consisted of the entire fifth grade class (n= 64) who provided parental consent and had the necessary test scores available. Searching For Community Online: How Virtual Spaces Affect Student Notions Of Community, Emma S. Spiro
Searching For Community Online: How Virtual Spaces Affect Student Notions Of Community, Emma S. Spiro
Pomona Senior Theses
Social networking sites and virtual spaces have flourished in the past few years. The author explores the impact of such social networking services on the local community at a small liberal arts college. The author investigates modern trends in community theory. Defining community has become more difficult in modern society, where community is no longer easily distinguished by geographical boundaries. From the background of modern community theory the author explores the designation of virtual spaces as “virtual communities.” Literature and research about virtual spaces indicates that they can provide many of the values thought be to inherent to community membership. …

What Linguistics Can Do For Trademark Law, Graeme Dinwoodie
What Linguistics Can Do For Trademark Law, Graeme Dinwoodie
All Faculty Scholarship
This contribution to an inter-disciplinary book on Trademarks and Brands responds to the work of Alan Durant, a linguist who (in his chapter of the book) provides legal scholars with both a rich understanding of how linguists view terms that are part of the basic argot of trademark law and a potentially vital explanation of the different social functions that word marks might serve. The Response explains why linguistics should matter to trademark law, but also why trademark law might on occasion ignore the precise reality of consumer understanding as might be provided by linguistics. I suggest that, while trademark …

Indian Manufacturing: A Slow Sector In A Rapidly Growing Economy, Devashish Mitra, Beyza P. Ural
Indian Manufacturing: A Slow Sector In A Rapidly Growing Economy, Devashish Mitra, Beyza P. Ural
Economics - All Scholarship
This paper investigates the determinants of productivity in Indian manufacturing industries during the period 1988-2000. Using two-digit industry level data for the Indian states, we find evidence of imperfect interindustry and interstate labor mobility as well as misallocation of resources across industries and states. Trade liberalization increases productivity in all industries across all states, and productivity is higher in the less protected industries. These effects of protection and trade liberalization are more pronounced in states that have relatively more flexible labor markets. Similar effects are also found in the case of employment, capital stock and investment. Furthermore, labor market flexibility, …

Black & Davidson On Metaphor, Emily Ayoob
Black & Davidson On Metaphor, Emily Ayoob
Macalester Journal of Philosophy
Most theories of metaphor look at what occurs inside a metaphorical phrase and posit a shift in meaning in the metaphorical words. This includes the classic “Models and Metaphor,” by Max Black, who distinguishes between the literal words of the phrase and the metaphorical words. On this view, the two interact in such a way that the meanings of the metaphorical words change. In another view, Donald Davidson takes a radical stance in his “What Metaphors Mean” to assert that the words in a metaphor mean nothing other than their original, literal meaning. Both theories suffer from problems: Black fails …
Two Dogmas Of Analytical Philosophy, Greg Taylor
Two Dogmas Of Analytical Philosophy, Greg Taylor
Macalester Journal of Philosophy
In his landmark article, “Two Dogmas of Empiricism,” W.V.O. Quine pushed analytical philosophy into its post-positivist phase by rejecting two central tenets of logical empiricism. The first dogma was the distinction between analytic and synthetic statements; the second was reductionism, or the belief that to each synthetic sentence there corresponds a set of experiences that will confirm or disconfirm it. But in both “Two Dogmas” and Word and Object, Quine stretches analytical philosophy to its limits. The problem is, ironically, his adherence to two separate dogmas. The first stems from Quine’s empiricism: he insists that there is nothing more to …
The Influence Of Transactive Memory On Mutual Knowledge In Virtual Teams: A Theoretical Proposal, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi
The Influence Of Transactive Memory On Mutual Knowledge In Virtual Teams: A Theoretical Proposal, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Advancements in information technologies (IT) have enabled the ability to exchange knowledge within and across organizations through virtual teams. However, the ability to effectively communicate and share knowledge in virtual settings can become a difficult task due to the complex nature of both the virtual context and the technology used to support them. This paper argues that transactive memory theory can explain how mutual knowledge enhances virtual team performance. We present a conceptual model and theoretical propositions for the study of the relationship between transactive memory and mutual knowledge in virtual teams.
Migrations And Unexpected Interreligious Dialogue, Orlando O. Espín
Migrations And Unexpected Interreligious Dialogue, Orlando O. Espín
Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology
The author takes first steps toward theologically unpacking the growing, but often unnoticed, interreligious dialogue occurring among the world’s “popular” religions. Christian theologies of religions in the last forty years have directed considerable attention to theological dialogue with non-Christian religions. However, these have seldom methodically analyzed the universe of the so-called “popular” religions — the actual religions of the vast majority of humankind. Much less have theologians wondered about the mutual impact that these “popular” religions might have on each other at the “popular” level. Building on earlier writings on culture, popular religion, and interculturality, the author’s addresses these lacunae, …
