Junior High Students' Perceptions Of The Fitnessgram Fitness Test, Emily Mcomber Welch Jul 2007

Junior High Students' Perceptions Of The Fitnessgram Fitness Test, Emily Mcomber Welch

Theses and Dissertations

The Fitnessgram is a battery of fitness tests designed for children and adolescents. These tests include aerobic capacity, body composition, muscle strength and endurance, and flexibility. Students are not compared to each other, rather to health fitness standards, specific to age and gender, which indicate good health. The purpose of this study was to identify student perceptions of the Fitnessgram fitness test. This study used surveys (N=82), and follow-up focus-group interviews (N=16) to identify student perceptions of the Fitnessgram fitness test. Results using the constant comparative method revealed three major categories: (1) students' perceptions of the purpose of fitness testing, …

Incorporating Flood Vulnerability To The Water Poverty Index In The Juarez Municipality, Angélica Herrera Castelazo Et Al. Jul 2007

Incorporating Flood Vulnerability To The Water Poverty Index In The Juarez Municipality, Angélica Herrera Castelazo Et Al.

2007

The objective of this study is to incorporate the concept of flood risk vulnerability as a variable into the Water Poverty Index (WPI), developed by Lawrence et al (2002). The distribution and availability of water resources vary considerably from region to region due to geographical, hydrological and socioeconomic factors. The WPI integrates information from parameters applied to a country, these parameters include: water volume per capita of surface and groundwater resources; capacity of the country to accomplish its agricultural, industrial, and urban water demands; the potential for buying, managing and treating this resource; efficiency in domestic, agricultural and industrial water …

Tolerability Of Risk For Dams And Levees, Sanjay S. Chauhan, David S. Bowles Jul 2007

Tolerability Of Risk For Dams And Levees, Sanjay S. Chauhan, David S. Bowles

2007

All technological systems, dams included, exist within that broader world and today, in many countries, society expects that it will dictate to the technological community the safety and other goals that should be met by technological systems, rather than the opposite, as has often been the case in the past. Risk assessment provides an opportunity to manage dam safety using a framework of risk evaluation that is common to other types of hazardous facilities. Therefore this paper contains presentation of risk evaluation from a general perspective with comments on its applicability to dam safety.

Explaining Subjective Risks Of Hurricanes And The Role Of Risks In Intended Moving And Location Choice Models, Justin Baker Et Al.

2007

In this manuscript we report on findings from a quasi-field experiment of a small group of subjects displaced by the 2005 hurricanes, Katrina and Rita. The sampled group, though small, is remarkable in that they all were deeply and personally affected by the hurricanes. All of the people in our sample evacuated from their homes and were still away months after the hurricane. The homes of a majority of the sample were severely damaged and almost a third of the sample lost a family member in the hurricane. Our research evaluates the risk perceptions and explains stated intentions to move …

A Dimensional Model Of Psychopathology Among Homeless Adolescents: Suicidality, Internalizing, And Externalizing Disorders, Kevin A. Yoder, Susan L. Longley, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt Jul 2007

A Dimensional Model Of Psychopathology Among Homeless Adolescents: Suicidality, Internalizing, And Externalizing Disorders, Kevin A. Yoder, Susan L. Longley, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The present study examined associations among dimensions of suicidality and psychopathology in a sample of 428 homeless adolescents (56.3% female). Confirmatory factor analysis results provided support for a three-factor model in which suicidality (measured with lifetime suicidal ideation and suicide attempts), internalizing disorders (assessed with lifetime diagnoses of major depressive episode and post-traumatic stress disorder), and externalizing disorders (indicated by lifetime diagnoses of conduct disorder, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse) were positively intercorrelated. The findings illustrate the utility of a dimensional approach that integrates suicidality and psychopathology into one model.

Relaxin As A Diagnostic Tool For Pregnancy In The Coyote (Canis Latrans), Debra A. Carlson, Eric M. Gese Jul 2007

Relaxin As A Diagnostic Tool For Pregnancy In The Coyote (Canis Latrans), Debra A. Carlson, Eric M. Gese

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The diagnosis of pregnancy in the domestic dog (Canis familiaris) often employs specialized equipment, experienced staff, and the cooperation of the bitch. These procedures can be challenging when the subject is a wild canid, particularly in a field setting. In addition, reproductive hormone assays are unreliable as a diagnostic tool because the estrous profiles of pregnant and pseudopregnant canines are similar. However, research has demonstrated that the hormone relaxin can be detected in maternal blood after embryonic implantation, but remains negligible in non-pregnant females. We investigated the use of relaxin as a diagnostic marker of pregnancy in the …

An Example Of How To Write The Statistical Section Of A Bioequivalence Study Protocol For Fda Review, William F. Mccarthy

COBRA Preprint Series

This paper provides a detailed example of how one should write the statistical section of a bioequivalence study protocol for FDA review. Three forms of bioequivalence are covered: average bioequivalence (ABE), population bioequivalence (PBE) and individual bioequivalence (IBE). The method of analysis is based on Jones and Kenward (2003) and a modification of their SAS Macro is provided.

Disease Susceptibility Of Hatchery Snake River Chinook Salmon With Different Migration Histories In The Columbia River, Erik J. Loboschefsky Et Al. Jul 2007

Disease Susceptibility Of Hatchery Snake River Chinook Salmon With Different Migration Histories In The Columbia River, Erik J. Loboschefsky Et Al.

2007

Various methods have been developed to mitigate the effects of dams on juvenile salmon migrating to the Pacific Ocean through the Columbia River Basin. The collective results suggest that transportation may help mitigate adverse health effects of the Columbia River Basin's hydropower system on Snake River Spring Chinook salmon, but the fate of the transported fish in the estuary and ocean may depend on their hatchery of origin.

Empirical Efficiency Maximization, Daniel B. Rubin, Mark J. Van Der Laan Jul 2007

Empirical Efficiency Maximization, Daniel B. Rubin, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

It has long been recognized that covariate adjustment can increase precision, even when it is not strictly necessary. The phenomenon is particularly emphasized in clinical trials, whether using continuous, categorical, or censored time-to-event outcomes. Adjustment is often straightforward when a discrete covariate partitions the sample into a handful of strata, but becomes more involved when modern studies collect copious amounts of baseline information on each subject.

The dilemma helped motivate locally efficient estimation for coarsened data structures, as surveyed in the books of van der Laan and Robins (2003) and Tsiatis (2006). Here one fits a relatively small working model …

Gis Analysis Of Lightning Strikes Within A Tornadic Environment, Richard Snow, Mary Snow, Nicole Kufa Jul 2007

Gis Analysis Of Lightning Strikes Within A Tornadic Environment, Richard Snow, Mary Snow, Nicole Kufa

Publications

Recent research suggests that a maximum rate of lightning strikes occurs at least 15 to 20 minutes prior to tornado formation within a supercell storm. These maxima are associated with strengthening updrafts as they appear in radar measurements. An increase in lightning rates correlates with an increase of shear in the lower part of the storm. In combination with a strong updraft or downdraft, this shear can provide the ingredients for rotation and possibly a tornado. Polarity reversal of lightning around the time of tornado touchdown also has been examined. Thus, increasing lightning flash rates and reversal of lightning strike …

Waterborne Diseases: Linking Public Health And Watershed Data, Debalina Das, Sarah M. Dorner

2007

This paper presents Massachusetts as a case study for linking public health data of waterborne diseases with sources of drinking water, potential recreational exposures, as well as hydrologic, climatic, and land use data. Information of reported illnesses from known waterborne pathogens will be synthesized and the relationship of confirmed illnesses will be compared with available hydrologic data. The goal is to develop a pathogen vulnerability index for Massachusetts waters to improve estimates of exposure to pathogens given watershed conditions.

BACKGROUND: Long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is associated with a reduced incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We and others have shown that certain NSAIDs reduce secretion of Abeta42 in cell culture and animal models, and that the effect of NSAIDs on Abeta42 is independent of the inhibition of cyclooxygenase by these compounds. Since Abeta42 is hypothesized to be the initiating pathologic molecule in AD, the ability of these compounds to lower Abeta42 selectively may be associated with their protective effect. We have previously identified R-flurbiprofen (tarenflurbil) as a selective Abeta42 lowering agent with greatly reduced cyclooxygenase activity that …
