Creating Culturally Relevant Techonological Operas In An Urban School, Dianna Isaac-Johnson Jul 2007

Creating Culturally Relevant Techonological Operas In An Urban School, Dianna Isaac-Johnson

Dissertations

The project described in this study developed due to the gap in achievement between African-American and white students. As music teacher I noticed my urban students could rap all the words of popular songs. Therefore I incorporated the use of technology with an authentic need to learn reading, writing, and lyric development for science and history content within a "hip-hop opera". This study details the instructional sequence, in which students watched musical performances, learned songs with a karaoke machine, and wrote new lyrics for the songs based on history and science material. I combined the students' lyrics into new versions …

Influences On Nurse Perception Of Hospital Unit Safety Climate:An Hlm Approach, Rangaraj Ramanujam Phd, Kathleen Abrahamson Rn,Ms, James Anderson Phd

RCHE Publications

Patient safety is a critical issue in healthcare. The Institute of Medicine[1] estimates up to 98,000 hopitalized patients die annually as a result if medical error. Nurses serve as a hospital unit's twenty-four hour surveillance team[2]. Assesment of patient condition, evaluation of physician orders, administration of medications, and supervision of patient activity are all safety functions which fall within the nurse's scope of practice. Health care organizations have introduced a variety of technological upgrades and structural changes in an effort to encourage a system, or root cause, approach to error reduction. However, these changes have failed to provide an adequate …

Police Misconduct And Early Warning Systems; An Exploratory Examination Of Influential Variables, Lisa B. Andre Jul 2007

Police Misconduct And Early Warning Systems; An Exploratory Examination Of Influential Variables, Lisa B. Andre

Masters Theses

The purpose of this exploratory research was two-fold: 1) an extensive literature review was conducted to discover what “police misconduct variables” have previously been researched and identified; 2) an existing early warning system (EWS) at Battle Creek Police Department (BCPD) was examined to analyze the correlation between influential variables and case outcomes. The BCPD secondary data set examined consisted of all officers involved in use of force actions, firearm discharge towards a person, vehicle pursuits, and/or citizen complaints combined, which were reported and received between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2006 (n = 1099). The findings demonstrated statistical significance …

Molecular Basis Of Resistance To Muramidase And Cationic Antimicrobial Peptide Activity Of Lysozyme In Staphylococci, Silvia Herbert, Agnieszka Bera, Christiane Nerz, Dirk Kraus, Andreas Peschel, Christiane Goerke, Michael Meehl, Ambrose Cheung, Friedrich Gotz Jul 2007

Molecular Basis Of Resistance To Muramidase And Cationic Antimicrobial Peptide Activity Of Lysozyme In Staphylococci, Silvia Herbert, Agnieszka Bera, Christiane Nerz, Dirk Kraus, Andreas Peschel, Christiane Goerke, Michael Meehl, Ambrose Cheung, Friedrich Gotz

Dartmouth Scholarship

It has been shown recently that modification of peptidoglycan by O-acetylation renders pathogenic staphylococci resistant to the muramidase activity of lysozyme. Here, we show that a Staphylococcus aureus double mutant defective in O-acetyltransferase A (OatA), and the glycopeptide resistance-associated two-component system, GraRS, is much more sensitive to lysozyme than S. aureus with the oatA mutation alone. The graRS single mutant was resistant to the muramidase activity of lysozyme, but was sensitive to cationic antimicrobial peptides (CAMPs) such as the human lysozyme-derived peptide 107R-A-W-V-A-W-R-N-R115 (LP9), polymyxin B, or gallidermin. A comparative transcriptome analysis of wild …

Speak Up Or Sit Still? Using Student Voice And Service-Learning To Develop Self-Determination In High School Students With Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, Michael A. Ricci Jul 2007

Speak Up Or Sit Still? Using Student Voice And Service-Learning To Develop Self-Determination In High School Students With Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, Michael A. Ricci

Theses and Graduate Projects

Self-determined people possess the skills necessary to understand personal strengths and limitations and to engage in goal-oriented, self-regulated behavior that allows them to successfully take control of their lives (Field, Martin, Miller, Ward, & Wehmeyer, 1998). In contrast, students with emotional / behavioral disorders (E/BD) struggle to manage aggression, impulsivity, anxiety, mood swings, and other disordered thought processes (Minnesota Rule 3525.1329). One approach to helping students with E/BD become more self-determined is direct instruction in self-determination strategies. A majority of educators working with students with disabilities between the ages of 14 and 21 believe "promoting self-determination would be 'very helpful' …

Comparative Mitochondrial Genomics Of Snakes: Extraordinary Substitution Rate Dynamics And Functionality Of The Duplicate Control Region, Zhi J. Jiang, Todd A. Castoe, Christopher C. Austin, Frank T. Burbrink, Matthew D. Herron, Jimmy A. Mcguire, Christopher L. Parkinson, David D. Pollock Jul 2007

Comparative Mitochondrial Genomics Of Snakes: Extraordinary Substitution Rate Dynamics And Functionality Of The Duplicate Control Region, Zhi J. Jiang, Todd A. Castoe, Christopher C. Austin, Frank T. Burbrink, Matthew D. Herron, Jimmy A. Mcguire, Christopher L. Parkinson, David D. Pollock

Publications and Research

Background The mitochondrial genomes of snakes are characterized by an overall evolutionary rate that appears to be one of the most accelerated among vertebrates. They also possess other unusual features, including short tRNAs and other genes, and a duplicated control region that has been stably maintained since it originated more than 70 million years ago. Here, we provide a detailed analysis of evolutionary dynamics in snake mitochondrial genomes to better understand the basis of these extreme characteristics, and to explore the relationship between mitochondrial genome molecular evolution, genome architecture, and molecular function. We sequenced complete mitochondrial genomes from Slowinski's corn …

Does State Certification Or Licensure Influence Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Program Practices?, Jamie Chriqui, Yvonne Terry-Mcelrath, Duane C. Mcbride, S Eidson, Curtis J. Vanderwaal

Faculty Publications

In the United States, state governments legally authorize outpatient substance abuse treatment programs. In some states, programs are certified or accredited (ideal standards). Other states license programs (minimal standards). Additionally, some states authorize programs through "deemed status", which is afforded to programs attaining accreditation from a national accrediting body. Primary legal research and the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services' (N-SSATS) data were used to examine the relationships between state authorization type (certification/accreditation vs licensure with and without deemed status) and outpatient treatment program practices. Programs in certification/accreditation (vs licensure) states had significantly higher odds of offering wrap-around and …

Geospatial Modeling For A Surface Hydrology Analysis In The West Part Of The Sierra De Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Ernestor Esparza Et Al.

2007

The present study refers to the regime of maximum water runoffs applicable to the streams that discharge to the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo, originating from the Sierra de Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. The study sets up the maximum discharges and its corresponding hydrographs for return periods, from two to 100 years. The objective of this document is to integrate the Geographical Information System (GIS) and the prediction water runoff model WIN TR-55 to help in the making decisions process by viewing techniques and the results analysis of the model. A secondary objective of this study is to provide reliable information for preserving …
