Poor Knowledge--Predictor Of Nonadherence To Universal Precautions For Blood Borne Pathogens At First Level Care Facilities In Pakistan, Naveed Z. Janjua, Mahreen Razaq, Subhash Chandir, Shafquat Rozi, Bushra Mahmood

Community Health Sciences

Background: We conducted an assessment of knowledge about blood borne pathogens (BBP) and use of universal precautions at first level care facilities (FLCF) in two districts of Pakistan. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey and selected three different types of FLCFs ; public, general practitioners and unqualified practitioners through stratified random sampling technique. At each facility, we interviewed a prescriber, a dispenser, and a housekeeper for knowledge of BBPs transmission and preventive practices, risk perception, and use of universal precautions. We performed multiple linear regression to assess the effect of knowledge score (11 items) on the practice of universal precautions score …

Variable Selection For Nonparametric Varying-Coefficient Models For Analysis Of Repeated Measurements, Lifeng Wang, Hongzhe Li Jul 2007

Variable Selection For Nonparametric Varying-Coefficient Models For Analysis Of Repeated Measurements, Lifeng Wang, Hongzhe Li

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

Nonparametric varying-coefficient models are commonly used for analysis of data measured repeatedly over time, including longitudinal and functional responses data. While many procedures have been developed for estimating the varying-coefficients, the problem of variable selection for such models has not been addressed. In this article, we present a regularized estimation procedure for variable selection for such nonparametric varying-coefficient models using basis function approximations and a group smoothly clipped absolute deviation penalty (gSCAD). This gSCAD procedure simultaneously selects significant variables with time-varying effects and estimates unknown smooth functions using basis function approximations. With appropriate selection of the tuning parameters, we have …

First Steps To A European Level Of Collective Bargaining In Health And Safety, Wolfhard Kohte Jul 2007

First Steps To A European Level Of Collective Bargaining In Health And Safety, Wolfhard Kohte

International Collaborative on Social Europe

Health and safety belong to the central and classic topics of the labour law. Already within the 19th century these were some of the most important topics developing an autonomous labour law in Great Britain, France and Germany and – later on – in most of the other European countries. One expected public authorities to control the activities of the employers and to array elemental safety-measures. Very early supra-national activities were started to secure an international standard of safety (Berliner Konferenz 1890).

Dismissal Law In The United States: The Past And Present Of At-Will-Employment, Katherine V.W. Stone Jul 2007

Dismissal Law In The United States: The Past And Present Of At-Will-Employment, Katherine V.W. Stone

International Collaborative on Social Europe

In the United States, sociological legal scholars have long admonished that it is necessary to understand the distinction between the law on the books and the law in action. Any discussion of dismissal in the United States must be particularly mindful of this distinction. In employment, there is a wide disjunction between the law as it is written and articulated by judges, and the actual practice of labor relations. Further, in the area of dismissal from employment, both the law on the books and the law in action are in flux at the present time, both in flux and moving …

Organizing Workers In Centralized Bargaining Systems, Guy Mundlak Jul 2007

Organizing Workers In Centralized Bargaining Systems, Guy Mundlak

International Collaborative on Social Europe

Unions’ decline is prevalent in most western democracies (Blanchflower 2007). Decline takes many features – decreasing bargaining power, reduced role in political negotiations, reduced coverage of collective agreements, shallow bargaining (in terms of topics covered and the extent of workers rights), and declining membership rates. In this article I would like to focus on the latter aspect. The article discusses the need for organizing members, and the different implications organizing may have in different industrial relations regime. I argue that organizing is a necessary component of trade union revitalization strategies in most countries. Only when the individual incentives to join …

Disability And Social Segregation - How Inclusive Is The Hungarian Labour Market?, Edit Kajtar

International Collaborative on Social Europe

2007 has been declared the “European Year of Equal Opportunities for All”. This Paper focuses on a specific segment of equality namely social exclusion of disabled people and their chances on the labour market. The first part of the Paper defines social inclusion and presents five different models of disability. The second part studies the human rights documents addressing disability. The third part looks at the evolution of the European Union’s disability agenda. It traces how the Community has gained competences in the social field from the Treaty of Rome up till now and how the issue of disability has …

New Governance And Decentralisation In Employment Policy, Milena Buchs, Mariely Lopez-Santana Jul 2007

New Governance And Decentralisation In Employment Policy, Milena Buchs, Mariely Lopez-Santana

International Collaborative on Social Europe

When thinking about the traditional boundaries of the welfare state, particularly of labour and employment policies, we tend to place them within the boundaries of the nation-state. However, with contemporary processes of European economic integration and devolution of competences to sub-national entities, our understanding of the spatial configuration of the welfare state has been challenged. These developments are also partially related to 'new governance' patterns in social policy. The authors explore the 'downward' movement of employment and labour market policies (LMP) in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy and explore cross-national differences regarding the characteristics and degree of decentralisation. The …

Science For The Environment: Need For Reconsidering Statistical Methodologies, Elisa Vecchione

Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers

This paper is part of a larger effort to analyze the United States vs. European Union dispute on biotechnology products before the World Trade Organization (WTO) Dispute Settlement Body (DSB).

Starting from May 2003, United States, Canada and Argentina requested consultations with the European Communities (hereinafter EC) regarding measures taken by the EC and its member States affecting the marketing of biotech products. According to United States, Canada and Argentina, the measures at issue were inconsistent with certain EC’s obligations under the Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement, the GATT 1994, the Agriculture Agreement and the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) …

Hunter-Gatherer Use Of Small Animal Food Resources: Coprolite Evidence, Karl J. Reinhard, J. R. Ambler, C. R. Szuter Jul 2007

Hunter-Gatherer Use Of Small Animal Food Resources: Coprolite Evidence, Karl J. Reinhard, J. R. Ambler, C. R. Szuter

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Faunal remains are commonly found in coprolites and provide direct evidence of animal consumption. An evaluation of hunter-gatherer coprolites from the Southwest United States shows that animal bone in coprolites can be used to assess patterns of hunting, food preparation, and general importance of small animals in diet. This is demonstrated by a comparison of faunal assemblages between two hunter-gatherer sites with respect to small animal hunting strategies. The sites are Dust Devil Cave on the Colorado Plateau, an Archaic winter habitation, and Hinds Cave, a warm season Archaic habitation in the lower Pecos of Texas. The results indicate that …
