Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we used an adenoviral vector -melanoma differentiation-associated gene-7 (Ad-mda7) to examine the effect of the ectopic production of MDA-7/IL-24 on cell migration and invasion by human cervical cancer cells. METHODS: The study took place in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, China, between April 2006 and November 2006. The change of metastasis of cervical cancer cells (CaSki) cells were detected by Cell Migration Assay and Cell Invasion Assay after treated with Ad-mda7. The production of proteins associated with cell migration and invasion were detected by western blot. RESULTS: Cervical cancer cells …

Protecting Court Borders: Fencing Hoffman Plastic Compounds, Inc. V. Nlrb Out Of Illinois Civil Courts, Patrick D. Kenneally Nov 2007

Protecting Court Borders: Fencing Hoffman Plastic Compounds, Inc. V. Nlrb Out Of Illinois Civil Courts, Patrick D. Kenneally

Northern Illinois University Law Review

An increasing number of jurisdictions have seized upon the reasoning in the United States Supreme Court's decision Hoffman Plastic Compounds, Inc. v. NLRB to deny undocumented immigrant plaintiffs recovery for lost future earnings at their projected earnings while living in the United States. However, a correct reading of Hoffman and understanding of its precedent reveals a narrow ruling confined to the field of federal labor law incapable of influencing the availability and distribution of damages in personal injury actions in Illinois state courts. Illinois common law currently grants undocumented plaintiffs the right to recover damages for amounts they would have …

Islamic Finance, Inclusive Growth, And Poverty Alleviation, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Most of the attention on Islamic finance has so far been focused on the regulatory framework, products and services offered, comparability with conventional finance, risk management characteristics, Shariah compliance, and expansion and penetration issues. Very little work has been done to explore the unique features of Islamic finance for the larger good of the society particularly in the context of economic growth and poverty alleviation. I would argue this morning that Islamic finance can be a powerful tool for inclusive growth and amelioration of the conditions of poor in the Muslim countries. Let me clarify at the outset as to …

Undergraduate Use Of Federated Searching: A Survey Of Preferences And Perceptions Of Value-Added Functionality, C. Jeffrey Belliston, Jared L. Howland, Brian C. Roberts

Faculty Publications

Randomly selected undergraduates at Brigham Young University, Brigham Young University-Idaho and Brigham Young University-Hawaii, all private universities sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, participated in a study that investigated four questions regarding federated searching: (1) Does it save time? (2) Do undergraduates prefer it? (3) Are undergraduates satisfied with the results they get from it? (4) Does it yield higher quality results than non-federated searching? Federated searching was, on average, 11% faster than non-federated searching. Undergraduates rated their satisfaction with the citations gathered by federated searching 17% higher than their satisfaction using non-federated search methods. A …

Rethinking Dui Law In Virginia, Monte Kuligowski

University of Richmond Law Review

As the demand for safer roadways needs little supporting argument, I turn to the constitutional problem of strict criminal liability law, followed with a brief analysis of criminal intent and strict liability law within the criminal system, some examples of how other states have responded to the inherent tensions, and a few specific thoughts for the legislature to consider.

The genome sequence (1.9-fold coverage) of an inbred Abyssinian domestic cat was assembled, mapped, and annotated with a comparative approach that involved cross-reference to annotated genome assemblies of six mammals (human, chimpanzee, mouse, rat, dog, and cow). The results resolved chromosomal positions for 663,480 contigs, 20,285 putative feline gene orthologs, and 133,499 conserved sequence blocks (CSBs). Additional annotated features include repetitive elements, endogenous retroviral sequences, nuclear mitochondrial (numt) sequences, micro-RNAs, and evolutionary breakpoints that suggest historic balancing of translocation and inversion incidences in distinct mammalian lineages. Large numbers of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), deletion insertion polymorphisms (DIPs), and …

Context: Colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) trying to stimulate research and develop research infrastructures must overcome the challenge of obtaining adequate funding to support growing research interests. The authors examine changes in research funding at COMs during the past 15 years.

Objectives: To track 1999-2004 data on COM research funding, COM faculty size, educational backgrounds of principal investigators receiving funding, and funding institutions. To compare these data with published results from 1989 to 1999.

Methods: Data on number of grants, funding amounts by extramural source, percent of total dollars by extramural source, percent of total dollars by COM, and total …
