Witchcraft And Statecraft: Liberal Democracy In Africa, Nelson Tebbe Nov 2007

Witchcraft And Statecraft: Liberal Democracy In Africa, Nelson Tebbe

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This Article addresses the prospects of liberal democracy in non-Western societies. It focuses on South Africa, one of the newest and most admired liberal democracies, and in particular on its efforts to recognize indigenous African traditions surrounding witchcraft and related occult practices. In 2004, Parliament passed a law that purports to regulate certain occult practitioners called traditional healers. Today, lawmakers are under pressure to go further and criminalize the practice of witchcraft itself. This Article presses two arguments. First, it contends that the 2004 statute is compatible with liberal principles of equal citizenship and the rule of law. Second, it …

In Re N.L.B. V. Lentz: The Missouri Supreme Court's Unwarranted Extension Of A Putative Father's Constitutional Protections, Lauren Standlee

Missouri Law Review

In Lentz, the Missouri Supreme Court granted an unwed father leave to intervene in an adoption, despite the fact that he had failed to bring himself into the realm of constitutionally protected putative fathers. This note explains why the holding of the Lentz court subverted the intent of Missouri's adoption statutes and its putative father registry, and argues that an unwed biological father who has not filed a valid paternity action, registered with the putative father registry, or demonstrated a substantial commitment to the responsibilities of parenthood should not be entitled to the additional constitutional protections available to diligent putative …

Tipping Point: Missouri Single Subject Provision, Alexander R. Knoll Nov 2007

Tipping Point: Missouri Single Subject Provision, Alexander R. Knoll

Missouri Law Review

The Missouri single subject provision, which requires that each bill enacted by the Missouri Legislature contain a single subject, is one of the great equalizers in backroom politics. Simply put, it is a hurdle that prevents legislators from hijacking the legislative process by attaching an unrelated provision to a proposed bill. This is a practice that many of our Federal legislators find to be a daily occurrence, but one that our state politicians are prevented from doing under the single subject provision of the Missouri Constitution. However, even with the broad prohibition outlined in the single subject provision, for the …

Bundle Of Trouble: An Analysis Of How The Lower Courts Have Handled Bundled Discounts Since Lepage's Inc. V. 3m, A, John H. Kilper Nov 2007

Bundle Of Trouble: An Analysis Of How The Lower Courts Have Handled Bundled Discounts Since Lepage's Inc. V. 3m, A, John H. Kilper

Missouri Law Review

This Summary will analyze the reasoning utilized in the various district court decisions since LePage's and will seek to illustrate how those courts have dealt with a lack of clear foundation as to how to handle bundling claims under the antitrust laws. Furthermore, this summary will attempt to determine specific reasons why the LePage's decision has failed to provide a proper approach to determining the legality of bundled discounts. Finally, the Summary will conclude that the Supreme Court should grant certiorari in order to provide both the district and circuit courts with guidance as to how they should balance between …

Ancient Schwannoma Presenting As A Thoracic Mass, Muhammad Z Tahir, Saulat H. Fatimi, S. Ather Enam

Department of Surgery Docs

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Ancient schwannoma is a rare variant of schwannoma, histologically showing atypical features that may result in erroneous diagnosis of a malignant tumor. There are only few reported cases in literature.

CASE DESCRIPTION:

We report a case of a 34-year-old man who was found to have giant mediastinal tumor. He underwent thoracotomy to remove the mass, which was proven to be ancient schwannoma on histopathology.

CONCLUSIONS:

Clinical and radiological findings are important aids for further consideration of surgical removal of these potentially respectable tumors with good outcome.

The Effect Of Tibiofemoral Loading On Proximal Tibiofibular Joint Motion, Jacob Scott, Ho Lee, Wael Barsoum, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The human proximal tibiofibular joint (PTFJ) and its relationship to overall knee joint mechanics have been largely unexplored. This study describes force/displacement data from experiments done on four human cadaveric knee specimens and general conclusions obtained with the help of a statistical modeling technique. Specimens were rigidly affixed at the tibia to a force plate and the femur was attached to a custom made device allowing for manual load application. Motion of the fibular head was tracked relative to the tibial plateau by means of reflective markers and a high speed digital camera synchronized with the force plate data stream. …

Predicting The Prison Misconducts Of Women Offenders: The Importance Of Gender-Responsive Needs, Emily M. Wright, Emily J. Salisbury, Patricia Van Voorhis Nov 2007

Predicting The Prison Misconducts Of Women Offenders: The Importance Of Gender-Responsive Needs, Emily M. Wright, Emily J. Salisbury, Patricia Van Voorhis

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The needs of women offenders may be qualitatively different than the needs of male offenders. The “pathways” and “gender-responsive” perspectives of female offending have recently garnered attention in both practitioner and scholarly arenas. The pathways perspective focuses attention on the co-occurrence and effects of trauma, substance abuse, dysfunctional relationships, and mental illness on female offending, while the gender-responsive perspective also suggests that problems related to parenting, childcare, and self-concept issues are important needs of women offenders. Few studies have examined whether or not these are risk factors for poor prison adjustment. With a sample of 272 incarcerated women offenders in …

The Textual Construction Of Femininity In Women's Fitness Magazines, Tracy Lynn Rundstrom Williams Nov 2007

The Textual Construction Of Femininity In Women's Fitness Magazines, Tracy Lynn Rundstrom Williams

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Women in the first decade of the 21st century encounter competing ideologies of traditional femininity and empowered femininity. Language, in particular Discourse Analysis, provides a means for investigating what these ideologies, or discourses, are and how they are perpetuated. One source of language which encodes and perpetuates ideologies of femininity is women's magazines. As pervasive, monthly texts directed specifically at women, women's magazines provide a rich source of contemporary ideologies of femininity. Given the rise of health and fitness magazines over the past 20 years, it appears that one primary focus of contemporary femininity is the body. Previous research has …

Robot-Assisted Prostate Brachytherapy, Yan Yu, Tarun Podder, Y D. Zhang, W S. Ng, V Misic, J Sherman, L Fu, D Fuller, D J. Rubens, J D. Strang, R A. Brasacchio, E M. Messing

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Abstract: In contemporary brachytherapy procedures, needle placement at the desired target is challenging due to a variety of reasons. A robot-assisted brachytherapy system can potentially improve needle placement and seed delivery, resulting in enhanced therapeutic delivery. In this paper we present a 16 DOF (degrees-of-freedom) robotic system (9DOF positioning module and 7DOF surgery module) developed and fabricated for prostate brachytherapy. Strategies to reduce needle deflection and target movement were incorporated after extensive experimental validation. Provisions for needle motion and force feedback were included into the system for improving robot control and seed delivery. Preliminary experimental results reveal that the prototype …

Household Food Insecurity Is Inversely Associated With Social Capital And Health In Females From Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants, And Children Households In Appalachian Ohio, Jennifer L. Walker, David H. Holben, Mary L. Kropf, John P. Holcomb Jr., Heidi Anderson

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Food insecurity has been negatively associated with social capital (a measure of perceived social trust and community reciprocity) and health status. Yet, these factors have not been studied extensively among women from households participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) or the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. A cross-sectional, self-administered, mailed survey was conducted in Athens County, Ohio, to examine the household food security status, social capital, and self-rated health status of women from households receiving WIC benefits alone (n=170) and those from households receiving both WIC and Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program benefits (n=65), …
