Whether or not racial disparities exist in fetal mortality rate (FMR) statistics depends upon the methodology used to calculate the rates. While there appears to be consensus that there is a black-white disparity in late gestation (> or = 28 weeks), the issue is unclear for early gestation (20-27 weeks). To clarify this issue, we assessed disparities in FMR for singleton fetal deaths and live births between non-Hispanic blacks and non-Hispanic whites in three counties of Missouri using gestational age- and weight-specific analyses. These analyses demonstrated statistically significant disparities for non-Hispanic whites when fetal deaths occurred < 28 weeks gestation and also at weights < 1,000 g. Statistically significant disparities for non-Hispanic blacks were not evident until gestation was > or = 32 weeks …

8th Meeting Of The States Parties To The Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (2007), Apmbc
Global CWD Repository
The 8MSP was a formal meeting of the 156 States which have accepted the 1997 Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction. It was held in accordance with Article 11 of the Convention and pursuant to the decisions of the 2004 First Review Conference and the 2006 Seventh Meeting of the States Parties (7MSP).
The 8MSP took place two months after the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention. This, and the fact that a Meeting of the States Parties (MSP) was held for the first time in …

Background and Purpose: The Functional Gait Assessment (FGA) is a clinical tool for evaluating performance in walking. The purpose of this study was to determine age-referenced norms for performance on the FGA in community-living older adults.
Subjects: Subjects were 200 adults, ages 40 to 89 years, living independently.
Methods: Each subject completed the FGA one time and was scored simultaneously by 2 testers.
Results: The intraclass correlation coefficient for interrater reliability was .93. Mean scores for the FGA ranged from 29/30 for adults in their 40s to 21/30 for adults in their 80s.
Discussion and Conclusion: Patient performance on the …

Detecting Shifts In Soil Microbial Community Structure And Function Post Landspread Of Manure Or Biosolids Containing Antimicrobial Chemicals, Kelly Lehnert, Sharon A. Clay, Susan Gibson, Volker Brozel

Soil microbial diversity and community interaction play an indispensable role in 2,4-dichorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) herbicide degradation. The addition of manure or municipal waste biosolids through landspreading may alter soil community structure and function if these materials contain antimicrobial chemicals like chlortetracycline (CTC), administered in livestock feed to promote animal growth and health or tetracycline (TET) utilized in human health. In this study, soil applied with manure collected from pigs fed standard CTC levels was compared to soil containing manure from control pigs fed no CTC, and a comparison of soil applied with biosolids containing TET or without TET to distinguish …

PURPOSE: To determine whether a 3-mm isotropic target margin adequately covers the prostate and seminal vesicles (SVs) during administration of an intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatment fraction, assuming that daily image-guided setup is performed just before each fraction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In-room computed tomographic (CT) scans were acquired immediately before and after a daily treatment fraction in 46 patients with prostate cancer. An eight-field IMRT plan was designed using the pre-fraction CT with a 3-mm margin and subsequently recalculated on the post-fraction CT. For convenience of comparison, dose plans were scaled to full course of treatment (75.6 Gy). Dose coverage …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
MapReduce is a programming model from Google for
cluster-based computing in domains such as search
engines, machine learning, and data mining. MapReduce
provides automatic data management and fault tolerance to
improve programmability of clusters. MapReduce’s execution
model includes an all-map-to-all-reduce communication,
called the shuffle, across the network bisection. Some
MapReductions move large amounts of data (e.g., as much
as the input data), stressing the bisection bandwidth and
introducing significant runtime overhead. Optimizing such
shuffle-heavy MapReductions is important because (1)
they include key applications (e.g., inverted indexing for
search engines and data clustering for machine learning)
and (2) they run longer …

Purpose: The addition of anionic charge on denture base resins has been shown to inhibit Candida albicans adhesion and to facilitate adsorption of salivary defense molecules. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical properties of a modified denture base resin for denture fabrication.
Materials and Methods: Specimens made from heat polymerizing resin Lucitone 199 were used as the control group. The two experimental groups, E-10 and E-20, had 10% and 20%, respectively, of the monomer substituted with an experimental phosphate-containing monomer. Flexural strength and modulus, water sorption, solubility, and color stability tests were conducted to ensure compliance …
