Progress In Ctbt Monitoring Since Its 1999 Senate Defeat, David W. Hafemeister Sep 2007

Progress In Ctbt Monitoring Since Its 1999 Senate Defeat, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

Progress in monitoring the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) is examined, beginning with the 2002 National Academy of Sciences CTBT study, followed by recent findings on regional seismology, array-monitoring, correlation-detection, seismic modeling, and non-seismic technologies. The NAS-CTBT study concluded that the fully completed International Monitoring System (IMS) will reliably detect and identify underground nuclear explosions with a threshold of 0.1 kt in hard rock, if conducted anywhere in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America. In some locations the threshold is 0.01 kt or lower, using arrays or regional seismic stations, but with an increase in background events. As …

Is The World Flat Or Spiky? Information Intensity, Skills, And Global Service Disaggregation, Sunil Mithas, Jonathan W. Whitaker Sep 2007

Is The World Flat Or Spiky? Information Intensity, Skills, And Global Service Disaggregation, Sunil Mithas, Jonathan W. Whitaker

Management Faculty Publications

Which service occupations are the most susceptible to global disaggregation? What are the factors and mechanisms that make service occupations amenable to global disaggregation? This research addresses these questions by building on previous work by Apte and Mason (1995) and Rai, Patnayakuni, and Seth (2006) that focuses on the unbundling of information and physical flows. We propose a theory of service disaggregation and argue that high information intensity makes an occupation more amenable for disaggregation because the activities in such occupations can be codified, standardized, and modularized. We empirically validate our theoretical model using data on more than 300 service …

Trans-American Security: What’S Missing?, Luigi R. Einaudi

Strategic Forums

The countries of the Western Hemisphere are more integrated than ever, with both each other and countries elsewhere, but critical aspects of their relationships remain hampered by outdated patterns and stereotypes. As the United States has focused on terrorism in the Middle East and Asia, its neighbors are developing more assertive roles on the world stage.

The "Teucer Paradigm" And The Eastern Other In Western Literature, Maria Beatrice Bittarello Sep 2007

The "Teucer Paradigm" And The Eastern Other In Western Literature, Maria Beatrice Bittarello

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "The 'Teucer Paradigm' and the Eastern Other in Western Literature," Maria Beatrice Bittarello argues that modern representations of characters with mixed-blood heritage (Western and Eastern) are rooted in classical representations of the Middle East and that such representations are thematically re-cast from a literary thematic archetype elaborated on in the ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Bittarello examines how Greek and Roman authors portray the Greek mythological hero Teucer, son of Telamon and the Trojan princess Hesione. Teucer's liminal position allows him to be used in already in Greek and Roman culture both as colonizer and "bridge" between …

American Grand Strategy For Latin America In The Age Of Resentment, Gabriel Marcella Dr. Sep 2007

American Grand Strategy For Latin America In The Age Of Resentment, Gabriel Marcella Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

A healthy Latin America is of critical value to the United States as a global power. It is besieged by a powerful force of resentment engendered by a combination of weak states, social exclusion, criminal violence, and corruption. In the context of attack by radical populism against democratic values, the United States needs a new grand strategy that addresses the causes rather than the symptoms of the malaise. The author argues that such a strategy must strengthen the effectiveness of the democratic state in providing security, justice, and governance, as well as effectively engender a linkage of the 40 percent …

The Construction Of Ethnic Identity Of Balkan Muslim Immigrants: A Narrativization Of Personal Experiences, Maya Miskovic Sep 2007

The Construction Of Ethnic Identity Of Balkan Muslim Immigrants: A Narrativization Of Personal Experiences, Maya Miskovic

The Qualitative Report

This paper explores the construction of ethnic identity in the first generation of Balkan Muslim immigrants now living in the Chicago metropolitan area, with the aim of showing the intricacy of global events (civil wars in the homeland and war on terror in the host society) and local contexts (meaning- making occurring during the interviews). In-depth interviews conducted with three men were treated as a series of narratives in order to emphasize the importance of personal meaning-making. With awareness that “Muslim” can denote various subjectivities, this paper proposes research that theorizes the constant shift of identities, the interplay between ascribed …

Psychological And Demographic Predictors Of Cellular Phone Use Of College Students, Crystal M. Mcwhirter, Linda J. Palm Sep 2007

Psychological And Demographic Predictors Of Cellular Phone Use Of College Students, Crystal M. Mcwhirter, Linda J. Palm

Modern Psychological Studies

The present study examined psychological and demographic predictors of cellular phone use of college students. The participants were 158 undergraduate students enrolled at a public university in the Southeastern United States. Each participant reported demographic information and completed the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory, the Trait Scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Cellular Telephone Inventory. Participants' responses to the Cellular Telephone Inventory produced four measures of cellular phone use: daily phone use in minutes, instrumental use, emotional/social use, and problematic use. Multiple regression analyses were used to determine the degree to which a set of six predictor variables (self-esteem, trait …

A Three-Tier Knowledge Management Scheme For Software Engineering Support And Innovation, Richard Corbin, Christopher B. Dunbar, Qiuming Zhu Sep 2007

A Three-Tier Knowledge Management Scheme For Software Engineering Support And Innovation, Richard Corbin, Christopher B. Dunbar, Qiuming Zhu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

To ensure smooth and successful transition of software innovations to enterprise systems, it is critical to maintain proper levels of knowledge about the system configuration, the operational environment, and the technology in both existing and new systems. We present a three-tier knowledge management scheme through a systematic planning of actions spanning the transition processes in levels from conceptual exploration to prototype development, experimentation, and product evaluation. The three-tier scheme is an integrated effort for bridging the development and operation communities, maintaining stability to the operational performance, and adapting swiftly to software technology innovations. The scheme combines experiences of academic researches …

Vascular Flora Of Powhatan County, Virginia, Michael Austin Terry, W. John Hayden Sep 2007

Vascular Flora Of Powhatan County, Virginia, Michael Austin Terry, W. John Hayden

Biology Faculty Publications

Powhatan County is a largely rural county of the Virginia piedmont currently experiencing exurban development pressure. Commercial pine forests occupy much of the land area; most natural vegetation occurs in various hardwood forests. Plant life is supported largely by soils derived from Proterozoic to Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks, soils developed over Triassic basins, and riparian soils associated with the James and Appomattox Rivers. The annotated checklist is based on new collections gathered between September 2003 and August 2005, supplemented with records from regional herbaria and the Atlas of the Virginia Flora. Field work sampled at least 12 distinct community …

The Impact Of Option-In Longevity Enrollment Patterns On Student Achievement, Behavior, And Engagement Outcomes, Andrew J. Rikli Sep 2007

The Impact Of Option-In Longevity Enrollment Patterns On Student Achievement, Behavior, And Engagement Outcomes, Andrew J. Rikli

Student Work

The impact of option-in longevity patterns on student achievement, behavior, and engagement outcomes was evaluated. The seventh-grade pretest compared the seventhgrade posttest gains made by students who were enrolled short-term (n = 46) as they completed their first year in a middle school setting indicated that the exposure to a consistent and equitable educational program continued to result in positive student outcomes. Levels of performance for option-in students were also found to be congruent with the posttest achievement, behavior, and engagement data for students who are residents of the district (n = 46). School choice options and longevity within a …

The Effect Of A Founding International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme On Participating Seventh Grade Students' Achievement, Behavior, Extra-Curricular Involvement, And Perceptions Of Life Skills, Joan C.R. Wilson Sep 2007

The Effect Of A Founding International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme On Participating Seventh Grade Students' Achievement, Behavior, Extra-Curricular Involvement, And Perceptions Of Life Skills, Joan C.R. Wilson

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a founding International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) on participating 7th-grade students' achievement, behavior, extra-curricular involvement, and perceptions of life skills compared to 7th-grade students' completing the same school's standard of care traditional academic program (TAP). The study analyzed data of IBMYP and TAP students to determine if the IBMYP has significantly impacted student outcomes. Following two consecutive years of program participation IBMYP students (n = 30) demonstrated a significant pretest-posttest improvement on norm-referenced achievement test math scores but their measured language and reading achievement test scores remained consistent …

Departures From Gibrat’S Law, Discontinuities And City Size Distributions, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, Colin M. Gallagher, John Mittelstaedt

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Cities are complex, self-organizing, evolving systems and the emergent patterns they manifest provide insight into the dynamic processes in urban systems. This article analyses city size distributions, by decade, from the south-eastern region of the US for the years 1860–1990. It determines if the distributions are clustered into size classes and documents changes in the pattern of size classes over time. A statistical hypothesis test was also performed to detect dependence between city size and growth using discrete probability calculations under the assumption of Gibrat’s law. The city size distributions for the south-eastern region of the US were discontinuous, with …

Kuwaiti National Security And The U.S.-Kuwaiti Strategic Relationship After Saddam, W. Andrew Terrill Dr. Sep 2007

Kuwaiti National Security And The U.S.-Kuwaiti Strategic Relationship After Saddam, W. Andrew Terrill Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The U.S.-Kuwaiti military and political relationship has been of considerable value to both countries since at least 1990. This alliance was formed in the aftermath of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s brutal invasion of Kuwait and the U.S. decision to free Kuwait with military force in 1991. Saddam’s later defeat and removal from power in 2003 has ended an important rationale for the alliance, but a close look at current strategic realities in the Gulf suggests that Kuwait remains an important U.S. ally. It is also an ally that faces a number of serious national security concerns in the turbulent post-Saddam …

Designing Multimodal Interaction For The Visually Impaired, Xiaoyu Chen Aug 2007

Designing Multimodal Interaction For The Visually Impaired, Xiaoyu Chen

Dissertations

Although multimodal computer input is believed to have advantages over unimodal input, little has been done to understand how to design a multimodal input mechanism to facilitate visually impaired users' information access.

This research investigates sighted and visually impaired users' multimodal interaction choices when given an interaction grammar that supports speech and touch input modalities. It investigates whether task type, working memory load, or prevalence of errors in a given modality impact a user's choice. Theories in human memory and attention are used to explain the users' speech and touch input coordination.

Among the abundant findings from this research, the …
