Katrina’S Window: Localism, Re-Segregation And Equitable Regionalism, David D. Troutt Aug 2007

Katrina’S Window: Localism, Re-Segregation And Equitable Regionalism, David D. Troutt

Rutgers Law School (Newark) Faculty Papers

The worst national disaster in United States history also showcased the dire consequences of localism as the cultural and legal successor to de jure segregation. Long before Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast, New Orleans’ status as an exceptional city had been lost to Americanizing trends. Its resistance to the conventional racial binary was overcome after Reconstruction; its unique densities and accommodation of the physical landscape were transformed into sprawling divisions by technology and suburbanization. From the Brown decision forward, New Orleans and the metropolitan area around it developed much like the rest of the nation. Localist tendencies …

Gender Variance And Mental Health : A National Survey Of Transgender Trauma History, Posttraumatic Stress, And Disclosure In Therapy, Virginia Wyatt Wharton

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This exploratory study aimed to investigate rates of trauma and posttraumatic stress in the lives of transgender individuals and to gather data on this population's accessing of mental health services and willingness to disclose trauma history in therapy. It was hypothesized that as a marginalized population, transgender individuals are at increased risk for victimization and posttraumatic stress. It was also hypothesized that while a high number of transgender individuals access mental health services, many choose not to disclose trauma history to a therapist. A web-based anonymous survey of trauma history, posttraumatic stress, and disclosure of trauma history in therapy was …

The Association Between Physical, Sexual, And Emotional Abuse And Physical Pain : A Comparison Of Psychiatric Patients In Ontario, Canada And Burlington, Vermont, Kathryn Irene Vigil

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the relationship between inpatient psychiatric patients' histories of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse (Abuse) and their current experience of physical pain. This study explored this association between Abuse and physical pain in adult inpatient psychiatric patients in two locations—Burlington, Vermont and Ontario, Canada. It was hypothesized that rates of Abuse between the two locations would not differ significantly, but that patients with a history of Abuse would score higher on a pain scale (report more severe pain) than those without an Abuse history. Through secondary data analyses using previously collected data …

Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit Aug 2007

Greening American History: Incorporating An Environmental Perspective Into United States Survey Courses, Nelson Paul Rosit

Theses and Dissertations

To paraphrase a well-known historian, there is too little nature in the study of history. Although environmental history is a well established field, nature and the physical environment are still often excluded agents in history pedagogy. The following essay is an effort to remedy this problem. This dissertation has two main objectives. The first is to define and describe environmental history and present a rationale for its inclusion as a major component of survey history courses. The second is to outline ways college teachers can include an environmental perspective in their instructional strategies. It includes three sample lesson plans that …

Regional Climate, Federal Land Management, And The Social-Ecological Resilience Of Southeastern Alaska, Colin Mitchell Beier Aug 2007

Regional Climate, Federal Land Management, And The Social-Ecological Resilience Of Southeastern Alaska, Colin Mitchell Beier

Biological Sciences

Complex systems of humans and nature often experience rapid and unpredictable change that results in undesirable outcomes for both ecosystems and society. In circumpolar regions, where multiple converging drivers of change are reshaping both human and natural communities, there is uncertainty about future dynamics and the capacity to sustain the important interactions of social-ecological systems in the face of rapid change. This research addresses this uncertainty in the region of Southeast Alaska, where lessons learned from other circumpolar regions may not be applicable because of unique social and ecological conditions. Southeast Alaska contains the most productive and diverse ecosystems at …

Habitat Selection And Sightability Of Moose In Southeast Alaska, Susan A. Oehlers Aug 2007

Habitat Selection And Sightability Of Moose In Southeast Alaska, Susan A. Oehlers

Biological Sciences

We examined the role of scale and sex in habitat selection by radiocollared Alaskan moose (Alces alces gigas) on the Yakutat forelands, Alaska, USA. We used conditional logistic regression to quantify differences in habitats selected between sexes and seasons at 3 different spatial scales (250, 500, and 1000 m), and multi-response permutation procedure (MRPP) to test for differences in spatial distribution between the sexes. Sexes selected for habitats similarly during the mating season, when sexes generally were aggregated, whereas sexes exhibited differential habitat selection during the non-mating season when sexes were segregated. Both sexes selected habitats at the 1000 m …

A Breccia-Centered Ore And Alteration Model For The Copper Canyon Alkalic Cu-Au Porphyry Deposit, British Columbia, Evan Twelker Aug 2007

A Breccia-Centered Ore And Alteration Model For The Copper Canyon Alkalic Cu-Au Porphyry Deposit, British Columbia, Evan Twelker

Geosciences

Similar to the nearby Galore Creek deposit, the Copper Canyon prospect of northwestern British Columbia is a porphyry-type copper-gold-silver occurrence associated with alkalic intrusive rocks of the Late Triassic-Early Jurassic Copper Mountain Suite. A reevaluation of the prospect geology shows that, of the previously recognized orthoclase and/or pseudoleucite porphyry syenite intrusions, mineralization is spatially and temporally associated with a single intrusive phase (unit i5) and biotite-garnet stockworks. Further, a newly defined unit of pre-mineralization magmatic-hydrothermal intrusive breccia occupies the core of the prospect and is a favorable host for much of the prospect mineralization. Prospect alteration can be divided into …
