System Approach To Embedded System Design, Vikram Prabhakar Mehendale Jan 2007

System Approach To Embedded System Design, Vikram Prabhakar Mehendale

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

During this research, the concepts of Systems Engineering were applied to embedded system design. The objective was to apply the Systems Engineering methodology to the design of a particular embedded system. A Video Surveillancesystem was chosen as the particular embedded system. Systems Engineering concepts provide the foundation for an optimized design process and for the coordination between system modules. The functionality of the Video Surveillance system was achieved through the partitioning of the overall system functionality into three separate modules. The three modules were Image Capture, Image Processing and Image Transmission. The methodology employed resulted in a system that was …

Warm: Wearable Assistant With Remote Monitoring, Lisa Michelle Provenzano Heugel

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Wearable computing has been in existence as part of our attire for many years, a few examples being the watches, cell phones and MP3 players. Recently, many researchers have been devising ways to incorporate wearable devices seamlessly into our lives with the goal of making them an indispensable part of our daily routines. In this thesis, a new wearable computing device called WARM (Wearable Assistant for Remote Monitoring) for use by the elderly and the handicapped is proposed and its software architecture is defined and described. The physically challenged or the elderly, living on their own, but who require assistance …

From The Dead Hand To The Living Dead: The Conundrum Of Charitable-Donor Standing, Evelyn Brody Jan 2007

From The Dead Hand To The Living Dead: The Conundrum Of Charitable-Donor Standing, Evelyn Brody

Georgia Law Review

This Article examines the current confused state of the law that applies to the private enforcement of restricted charitable gifts, and describes the first steps toward a tailored legal regime that appears in the American Law Institute's draft project on Principles of the Law of Nonprofit Organizations, for which this author is reporter. That regime addresses not only standing, but also proposals for notification of the attorney general, time limits on private (but not attorney general) enforcement, and a circumscription of appropriate remedies in order to protect the charity. Several of the issues, however, will likely require a legislative solution.

Utilizing Focus Groups To Evaluate An Information Literacy Program In A General Biology Course, Betsy S. Hopkins

Faculty Publications

The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University (BYU) recently implemented a number of information literacy strategies to help students in Biology 100, a large general education class, find resources for their term assignment. The library's services for Biology 100 students were evaluated using focus groups composed of both teaching assistants and students. This paper will describe the class and the assignment, discuss the impact the class had on library staff, detail the efforts of the staff to meet the needs of Biology 100 students, and present results of focus groups used to evaluate the library's outreach and teaching …

A Primer On The Nonproliferation Regime For Maritime Security Operations Forces, Craig Allen

Articles

This article seeks to provide the reader with an overview of the weapons of mass destruction (WMD) nonproliferation regime relevant to marine security operations and to alert the reader to shortfalls in that regime that might frustrate at-sea efforts to interdict WMD shipments. It begins with a general description of the international approach to combating proliferation of WMD and then examines the individual regimes for nuclear weapons, chemical weapons (CW), biological-toxin weapons (BTW) and WMD delivery systems, such as missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. It next traces the development of several resolutions by the United Nations Security Council that target …

The Latino Caregiver Experience Among Dementia And Non-Dementia Caregivers : Can Community Based Care Management Improve Caregiver Health?, Catherine Oliveros

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Purpose: This study provides an analysis of the Latino caregiving community in Southeast Texas and the role community based care management plays in influencing caregiver physical and emotional well-being. Design and Methods: A non-random sample of 63 Latino caregivers was interviewed by phone. Caregiver physical and emotional well-being was studied through burden, depression, perceived health status, and resourcefulness. Regression, correlation, and comparison analysis was performed with key variables. Results: Acculturation was positively correlated with care management use. In comparing dementia and non-dementia caregivers both groups had similar levels of depression and burden, however, the dementia group had significantly lower levels …

The U.S. Treasury Buyback Auctions: The Cost Of Retiring Illiquid Bonds, Bing Han, Francis A. Longstaff, Craig B. Merrill Jan 2007

The U.S. Treasury Buyback Auctions: The Cost Of Retiring Illiquid Bonds, Bing Han, Francis A. Longstaff, Craig B. Merrill

Faculty Publications

We study an important recent series of buyback auctions conducted by the U.S. Treasury in retiring $67.5 billion of its illiquid off-the-run debt. The Treasury was successful in buying back large amounts of illiquid debt while suffering only a small market-impact cost. The Treasury included the most-illiquid bonds more frequently in the auctions, but tended to buy back the least-illiquid of these bonds. Although the Treasury had the option to cherry pick from among the bonds offered, we find that the Treasury was actually penalized for being spread too thinly in the buybacks.

Rituals And Relationships: Examining The Relationship Between Family Of Origin Rituals And Young Adult Attachment, Melissa M. Homer, Patti A. Freeman, Ramon B. Zabriskie, Dennis L. Eggett Jan 2007

Rituals And Relationships: Examining The Relationship Between Family Of Origin Rituals And Young Adult Attachment, Melissa M. Homer, Patti A. Freeman, Ramon B. Zabriskie, Dennis L. Eggett

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between family of origin rituals and young adults’ attachment style when controlling for parents’ attachment style. The sample consisted of 222 paired young adults and one parent (representing 208 families) from 36 different states. Family of origin rituals were measured using the Family Ritual Questionnaire (FRQ) and attachment was measured using the Experiences in Close Relationships Revised (ECR-R) Questionnaire. Results indicated a negative relationship between family of origin ritual meaning and young adult attachment anxiety. Results also indicated that family of origin ritual meaning significantly predicted young adult anxiety after …

Attributes Of Meaningful Learning Experiences In An Outdoor Education Program, Stacy T. Taniguchi, Patti A. Freeman, A. Legrand Richards

Faculty Publications

This phenomenological study sought to identify the attributes of meaningful learning experiences as found in an outdoor education program. Thirteen students in the Wilderness Writing Program at Brigham Young University were the sample of this study. Their participation in outdoor recreational activities and their reflections about their experiences were analyzed. Through written journal entries, group discussions, observations, and writing assignments, a qualitative analysis identified attributes that occurred in their meaningful learning experiences. Meaningful learning was defined as a realization of a person's weaknesses, strengths, and potentials. This realization came through experiences with attributes of a degree of perceived risk, which …

Modeling The Dynamics Of Tritrophic Population Interactions, Andrew Paul Gutierrez, Johann Baumgärtner Jan 2007

Modeling The Dynamics Of Tritrophic Population Interactions, Andrew Paul Gutierrez, Johann Baumgärtner

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Introduction Increasingly, population modeling and systems analysis are being used to examine the complex issues that are at the heart of CP/IPM (crop production and integrated pest management) and biological control. The design of economically sound and sustainable crop management strategies requires a thorough understanding of the whole production system including arthropod pests, pathogens, and weeds. More than three decades ago, Huffaker and Croft (1976) stressed the need to rely on systems analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration to accomplish this task. Soon the question arose as to how mathematical techniques employed in the analysis of physical systems could be adapted to …
