"A Woman's Face, Or Worse": Otto Rank And The Modernist Identity, Michael L. Shuman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Otto Rank is a significant but generally overlooked figure in the early history of psychoanalysis, and his work provides an illuminating context for the study of subjectivity and modernist culture. The "modernist identity" of my title is intended to represent, first, the concept of the individual self identified and expressed during this period and, secondly, the unique identity of modernist culture developed by artists through creative acts and emanating as the intellectual ambiance of the era. Through an examination of Rank's later theories and the work of prominent modernist artists, including Lawrence, Yeats, and Eliot, this dissertation will show that …

Psychometric Functions Of Clear And Conversational Speech For Young Normal Hearing Listeners In Noise, Jane Smart Jan 2007

Psychometric Functions Of Clear And Conversational Speech For Young Normal Hearing Listeners In Noise, Jane Smart

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Clear speech is a form of communication that talkers naturally use when speaking in difficult listening conditions or with a person who has a hearing loss. Clear speech, on average, provides listeners with hearing impairments an intelligibility benefit of 17 percentage points (Picheny, Durlach, & Braida, 1985) over conversational speech. In addition, it provides increased intelligibility in various listening conditions (Krause & Braida, 2003, among others), with different stimuli (Bradlow & Bent, 2002; Gagne, Rochette, & Charest, 2002; Helfer, 1997, among others) and across listener populations (Bradlow, Kraus, & Hayes, 2003, among others). Recently, researchers have attempted to compare their …

Greater Flexibility, Greater Growth: A Comparative Study Of Labor And Capitalist Models In Japan, Germany And The United States, Jay Arthur Thompson Jan 2007

Greater Flexibility, Greater Growth: A Comparative Study Of Labor And Capitalist Models In Japan, Germany And The United States, Jay Arthur Thompson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

After the end of the Second World War, three major economic powers emerged. Japan in Asia, Germany in Europe, and the United States in North America, quickly became the economic engines of their respective regions. Japan, with its "catch-up" and producer centered economy, grew so fast and so large, that there were worries in America that the Japanese would end up winning the economic war. West Germany, supported by the capitalist world, became a miracle economy, and the economic power of the European Union. In the past fifteen years however, these two economies have faltered and stagnated. In Japan, the …

Sensitivity Analysis Of The Transit Boardings Estimation And Simulation Tool (Tbest) Model, Dajana Vuckovic Jan 2007

Sensitivity Analysis Of The Transit Boardings Estimation And Simulation Tool (Tbest) Model, Dajana Vuckovic

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Public transportation, although modest in the United States carrying about 2 percent trips, still serves millions of people as the main and only means of transportation. Recently released data set by Census, the 2006 American Community Survey (ACS) shows the main mode of travel for work commute is not surprisingly the automobile with over 86 percent and public transportation with nearly 5 percent users. Transit agencies strive to provide effective, convenient, and desirable transport. Because of the constant changes in our environment, being able to predict the response of riders to different network or system changes is extremely useful. Ridership …

The Proliferating Sacred: Secularization And Postmodernity, Donald Surrency Jan 2007

The Proliferating Sacred: Secularization And Postmodernity, Donald Surrency

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When analyzing the role religion plays in contemporary American society, one is forced to address the notion of secularization. This is a term that broadly refers to the marginalization of religious influence in culture and society that began at the outset of the Enlightenment, sometime during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but, as Peter Berger argues, can actually be traced back to the times of the great Israelite prophets who emerged during the Axial Age (800-200 BCE). Throughout the available literature, proponents of the secularization thesis extend the marginalization of religious influence from the societal level to the level of …

Clinical Supervision Of Child And Adolescent Counselors In Residential Foster Care: A Collective Case Study, Lee A. Teufel Jan 2007

Clinical Supervision Of Child And Adolescent Counselors In Residential Foster Care: A Collective Case Study, Lee A. Teufel

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A collective case study is the study of more than one case (Stake, 1995). One therapist supervisor and three therapist supervisees from a child and adolescent residential foster care facility were observed during their individual clinical supervision and interviewed post-supervision. Currently, the literature on clinical supervision seldom addresses the supervision of working professional counselors; particularly those who are child and adolescent counselors (CACs).

Using a qualitative approach, two fundamental questions guided this inquiry: (a) what is the nature of clinical supervision involving a supervisor who provides clinical supervision to counselors in a child and adolescent residential foster care center that …

Androgen Receptors In The Bonnethead Shark, Sphyrna Tiburo: Cdna Cloning And Tissue-Specific Expression In The Male Reproductive Tract, John P. Tyminski

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Androgens and the androgen receptor (AR) play important roles in virilization, spermatogenesis, and sexual behavior in vertebrates. An understanding of the distribution and levels of expression of the ARs on the cellular and tissue level demonstrates the pattern of responsiveness to the androgenic hormones in a given organism. In this study, a fragment of the AR gene was cloned and sequenced from the bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo, an elasmobranch species with a well-defined annual reproductive cycle. Acquiring this gene sequence facilitated the construction of species-specific AR polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers and species-specific AR mRNA probes that were used to …

Local Strategies In A Global Network: Disability Rights Advocacy In Jamaica, Joan A. Tucker

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The declaration of the International Year of Disabled Persons in 1981 and the international activism of persons with disabilities resulted in the globalization of disability, which involved a new framework for the treatment of PWDs. Although disability activism was being played out globally, it has been about PWDs gaining equality and full participation in their local societies. Therefore, at the heart of an international movement was the strategic organization of PWDs, most of who live in the developing world. This dissertation is based on a case study of activism for disability rights in one particular developing society, Jamaica. The Jamaican …

Uncertainty In The Information Supply Chain: Integrating Multiple Health Care Data Sources, Monica Chiarini Tremblay Jan 2007

Uncertainty In The Information Supply Chain: Integrating Multiple Health Care Data Sources, Monica Chiarini Tremblay

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Similar to a product supply chain, an information supply chain is a dynamic environment where networks of information-sharing agents gather data from many sources and utilize the same data for different tasks. Unfortunately, raw data arriving from a variety of sources are often plagued by errors (Ballou et al. 1998), which can lead to poor decision making. Supporting decision making in this challenging environment demands a proactive approach to data quality management, since the decision maker has no control over these data sources (Shankaranarayan et al. 2003). This is true in health care, and in particular in health planning, where …

Thomas Hardy's Siren, Sarah A. Wray Jan 2007

Thomas Hardy's Siren, Sarah A. Wray

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Sirens episode in The Odyssey is comparably short, but it is one of the most memorable scenes in the epic. Sirens are trying to stop the male narrative, the male quest of Odysseus with their own female "narrative power" (Doherty 82). They are the quintessential marginalized, calling for a voice, a presence, an audience in the text of patriarchy. The knowledge they promise, though, comes with the price of death. They are covertly sexual in Classical antiquity, but since the rise of Christianity, a new Siren emerged from the depths of the sea; instead of the sexually ambiguous embodiment …

Physical, Kinetic, And Immunological Studies Of Monomeric (Periplaneta Americana) And Dimeric (Isostychopus Badonotus) Arginine Kinases, Brianne Wright-Weber

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Arginine kinase catalyzes the reversible phosphorylation of arginine using ATP. This phosphotransferase is found throughout invertebrate species; whereas a homologous enzyme, creatine kinase, is found in both vertebrate and invertebrate species. Arginine kinases are found as monomers of 40 kDa or 80 kDa and dimers of 80 kDa while creatine kinases are found as dimers of 80 kDa, monomers of 150 kDa, or octamers of 320 kDa. The significance or advantage of the dimeric state or various quaternary structures is still not understood for this family of enzymes. Here, arginine kinase from Isostychopus badonotus muscle was purified to homogeneity and …

Media Exposure And Males’ Evaluation Of The Appearance Of Females, Yuko Yamimiya Jan 2007

Media Exposure And Males’ Evaluation Of The Appearance Of Females, Yuko Yamimiya

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The adverse effect of the exposure to images of attractive females on women's body image and mood has been well-documented in studies conducted in various western and westernized nations. However, research designed to determine the effect of exposure to attractive female images on men has been rather neglected. Past findings indicate that after being exposed to exceptionally attractive female images, males report less satisfaction for a current relationship, rate average-looking females as less attractive, and express less affection for their significant other compared to those men exposed to control images. It is currently not known, however, whether a psychoeducational intervention …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Applications Of Cvd Micro- And Nanocrystalline Diamond Thin Films, Zhenqing Xu Jan 2007

Synthesis, Characterization, And Applications Of Cvd Micro- And Nanocrystalline Diamond Thin Films, Zhenqing Xu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a systematic study has been carried out on the synthesis, characterization and applications of microcrystalline diamond (MCD) and nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) thin films deposited by the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Firstly, an overview of diamond films synthesized from carbon-containing gas plasmas is presented. A parameter study was performed to grow diamond thin films. The transition from micro- to nanocrystallinity of diamond grains was achieved by controlling the Ar/Hydrogen gas ratio. The nanocrystallinity is the result of a new growth mechanism which involves the insertion of carbon dimmer into carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogen bonds. Secondly, characterization of diamond …

Functional Characterization Of Roles Of Histone Deacetylases In The Regulation Of Dna Damage Response, Zhigang Yuan Jan 2007

Functional Characterization Of Roles Of Histone Deacetylases In The Regulation Of Dna Damage Response, Zhigang Yuan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are a family of enzymes whose functions have been overwhelmingly associated with gene expression and chromatin dynamics by modifying the histone tails. In recent years, intensive studies have demonstrated that many non-histone proteins also could serve as substrates for HDACs. And their functions and activities have been found to be regulated by posttranslational acetylation on the ε-amino group of lysines. Here, we report that two DNA repair factors including NBS1 (Nijmegen breakage syndrome 1) and ATDC (Ataxia-Telangiectasia Group D Complementing) are acetylated proteins. SIRT1 could maintain NBS1 in a hypoacetylated state, which is required for ionizing radiation-induced …

A plethora of empirical studies, such as the Institute of Medicine’s Unequal Treatment report, have shown that racial inequities in health care continue at the same level as in the Jim Crow Era. Innumerable reasons have been offered to explain the continuation of these health inequities, including racial discrimination. Congress enacted Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to put an end to racial discrimination in health care, but it still persists. Given the regulation and enforcement mechanisms established under Title VI explicitly aimed at remedying racial discrimination such as that directed at elderly African-Americans it is unbelievable …

America’S First Feral Hog War, Michael R. Conover Jan 2007

America’S First Feral Hog War, Michael R. Conover

Human–Wildlife Interactions

This issue of Human-Wildlife Conflicts focuses on the management of feral hogs (Sus scrofa). As this exotic species has become more numerous and has expanded its range in North America, its adverse impacts on both our nation’s agriculture and environment are becoming more apparent and alarming. How best to manage feral hogs has become one of the most vexing questions for wildlife agencies today, owing to society’s mixed attitudes towards feral hogs (Rollins et al. 2007). Environmentalists and farmers want feral hogs eradicated. Others, especially those who enjoy hunting them, are rooting (pun intended) for the continued expansion …
