Design Of A Logic Element For Implementing An Asynchronous Fpga, Scott C. Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A reconfigurable logic element (LE) is developed for use in constructing a NULL Convention Logic (NCL) FPGA. It can be configured as any of the 27 fundamental NCL gates, including resettable and inverting variations, and can utilize embedded registration for gates with three or fewer inputs. the developed LE is compared with a previous NCL LE, showing that the one developed herein yields a more area efficient NCL circuit implementation. the NCL FPGA logic element is simulated at the transistor level using the 1.8V, 180nm TSMC CMOS process. Critical Analysis Of Problems Encountered In Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge In Science Teaching By Primary School Teachers In Zimbabwe, Edward Shizha Oct 2007

Critical Analysis Of Problems Encountered In Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge In Science Teaching By Primary School Teachers In Zimbabwe, Edward Shizha

Youth and Children's Studies

In Zimbabwe the need to incorporate indigenous knowledge in science education to reflect local cultural settings cannot be overemphasized. Current policies on science are situated in Western cultural definitions, thus marginalizing indigenous knowledge, which is misconceived as irrational and illogical. This study used qualitative research methods. Ten teachers were purposively selected and interviewed to gain their insights into problems faced in incorporating indigenous knowledge into science teaching. The study found that the problems were attitudinal, institutional, and systemic. Teachers were found to be conservative “gatekeepers” who exhibited negative attitudes toward indigenous science and supported maintaining the teaching of Western science. …

Learning Navigation For Recharging A Self-Sufficient Colony Robot, Gary Parker, Richard Zbeda Oct 2007

Learning Navigation For Recharging A Self-Sufficient Colony Robot, Gary Parker, Richard Zbeda

Computer Science Faculty Publications

It is advantageous for colony robots to be autonomous and self-sufficient. This requires them to perform their duties while maintaining enough energy to operate. Previously, we reported the equipping of power storage for legged robots with high capacitance capacitors, the configuration of one of these robots to effectively use its power storage in a colony recharging system, and the learning of a control program that enabled the robot to navigate to a charging station in simulation. In this work, we report the learning of a control program that allowed the simulated robot to perform area coverage in a self-sufficient framework …

Removing Mud In The Clean Water Act: The Ninth Amendment As A Limiting Factor In Chevron Analysis, Warren Norred Oct 2007

Removing Mud In The Clean Water Act: The Ninth Amendment As A Limiting Factor In Chevron Analysis, Warren Norred

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment discusses the consolidated case Rapanos v. United States and the challenged scope of the Clean Water Act as an example ok where the Ninth Amendment should serve as a counter-balance to Chevron deference when agencies act against individual liberties without specific enabling statutory authority. The Comment examines historical evidence revealed and discussed in recent scholarship to establish the various legal views concerning the Ninth Amendment and the protection it was intended to provide. While some commentators see an expansive "natural law" Ninth Amendment, others see a mere rule of construction that cannot be used to reject a law …

Reduce Response Time: Get "Hooked" On A Wiki, Rebecca Klein, Matthew Smith, David Sierkowski

Information Technology Faculty and Staff Publications

Managing the flow of information both within the IT department and to our customers is one of our greatest challenges in the Office of Technology Information at Valparaiso University. To be successful, IT staff first need to acquire the right information from colleagues to provide excellent service. Then, the staff must determine the most effective way to communicate that information to internal and external customers to encourage the flow of information. To advance the IT department’s goals, how best can we utilize “information” and “communication” vehicles to exchange information, improve workflow, and ultimately communicate essential information to our internal and …

Responsibility, Reconciliation, And Remembrance: Serbian Youth Perspectives In Dealing With The Past, Erica Getto Oct 2007

Responsibility, Reconciliation, And Remembrance: Serbian Youth Perspectives In Dealing With The Past, Erica Getto

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Dealing with the past is a process in which a society determines truthful facts of previous events, and with the support of civil society and its leaders, undergoes a transformation from a culture of conflict to one of peace, through reconciliation and depolarization . Youth between the ages of 18-30 are the future of Serbia. They grew up in the midst of war, under a regime that greatly affected the economical, social, and political stability of the newly independent country. Because of these factors, their perspectives and opinions become critical in determining how this country is approaching topics of the …

The 1916 Easter Rising: A History Of Commemoration, Emily Litwin Oct 2007

The 1916 Easter Rising: A History Of Commemoration, Emily Litwin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Before traveling to Ireland, I watched the film Michael Collins; aside from the single paragraph of text allocated to the 1916 Easter Rising in The Course of Irish History, the film shaped my understanding of the Irish fight for independence. As the semester progressed, this basic understanding evolved into a solid grasp of Irish history and politics. As a student of history with a specific interest in historiography, I aimed to structure my Independent Research Project (ISP) around Irish history so that I could delve deeper into my preferred field. Throughout the semester my intrigue piqued as I noticed how …

Immigration Policy, Cultural Pluralism And Trade: Evidence From The White Australia Policy, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Oct 2007

Immigration Policy, Cultural Pluralism And Trade: Evidence From The White Australia Policy, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

Examining data for Australia and 101 trading partners that span the years 1989–2000, we find immigrants from nations afforded preference under the White Australia policy exert greater proportional influences on Australian imports from their home countries compared to immigrants from nations not privy to such preference. Immigrants from this latter group of countries influence Australian exports to their home countries proportionally more than do immigrants from the former group. We also find immigrant-trade links vary across disaggregated measures of trade. The results suggest that cultural diversity, affected here by immigration policy, is relevant to a nation’s trade patterns.

The Rule Of The Jungle In Pakistan: A Case Study On Corruption And Forest Management In Swat, Lorenzo Pellegrini Oct 2007

The Rule Of The Jungle In Pakistan: A Case Study On Corruption And Forest Management In Swat, Lorenzo Pellegrini

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Corruption in the forest sector of Swat, Pakistan is impairing the sustainable management of forest. We analyze corruption in a case study setting against the backdrop of the reform options that are most often cited as possible solutions. As we highlight in this study, the ‘crime and punishment’ approach is not feasibly implemented if the overall institutional environment is weak. Since countrywide overhaul of corruption through sweeping reform programs, the other reform approach, is a difficult and lengthy task, there is a need for an alternative kind of reform. In the case of a corruption-ridden centralised forest management regime, institutional …

Welfare And Distribution Effects Of Water Pricing Policies, Arjan Ruijs Oct 2007

Welfare And Distribution Effects Of Water Pricing Policies, Arjan Ruijs

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In this paper, distribution and welfare effects of changes in block price systems are evaluated. A method is discussed to determine, for a Marshallian demand function, equivalent variation in case of a block price system. The method is applied to analyze welfare and distribution effects of changing water prices in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. Results show that there is a trade off between average welfare and income distribution. A pro-poor price system may result in lower average welfare than a flat price system, but in higher individual welfare for the poor. Moreover, there is a trade off between …
