Herbal Medications: Implications For The Operating Room, Tricia Marcuson Jan 2007

Herbal Medications: Implications For The Operating Room, Tricia Marcuson

Theses and Dissertations

US households have an increasing number of people using herbal medications as common self treatments. According to Hodges & Kam (2002), 32-37% of Americans have used herbal medications in the last year. Schmidt (2004) states that 1 in 3 Americans consume herbal products each year. Between 1990 and 1997, the use of herbal medicines increased 380% (Ernst, 2004). The interactions between herbal medications and anesthetic drugs become more important and meaningful due to the wide spread use. There are currently 15 million adults in the United States at risk for a potential adverse interaction with a prescription medication and an …

Phenomenology, Theology And Psychosis: Towards Compassion, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2007

Phenomenology, Theology And Psychosis: Towards Compassion, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The article argues for a phenomenological and theological perspective of psychosis. It draws especially upon Levinas’ philosophy as a way of looking at psychosis and responding with compassion. It aims to show that the world of psychosis parallels the Levinas’ negative characterisation of both ontology and the categories of objectivity, presence and Being. This suggests that the language of ontology itself holds insights into the experience of psychosis and perhaps further that the language of alterity (otherness) could be a possible response to it. Psychosis should not be understood as a ‘psychological problem’, but rather as an altered state of …

Legal Change, The Eighty-Third Cleveland-Marshall Fund Visiting Scholar Lecture , Gerald Torres Jan 2007

Legal Change, The Eighty-Third Cleveland-Marshall Fund Visiting Scholar Lecture , Gerald Torres

Cleveland State Law Review

This Essay will proceed in the following steps. First, I want to propose a preliminary definition of legal change. As I hope to make clear, there are technical and non-technical dimensions to the definition. Second, I want to offer a preliminary definition of social change and social movements. Third, I want to build on the analysis of the late Professor Thomas Stoddard in which he sketched out a relationship between what he calls "rule shifting" and "culture shifting."' Finally, I want to describe what Professor Lani Guinier and I have come to call "demosprudence." I appreciate that it is not …

Reason's Freedom And The Dialectic Of Ordered Liberty , Edward C. Lyons Jan 2007

Reason's Freedom And The Dialectic Of Ordered Liberty , Edward C. Lyons

Cleveland State Law Review

The present Article proposes, via consideration of a contrast between two classical accounts of dialectical reasoning, that the employment of "public reason," in substantive due process analysis, is unworkable in theory and contrary to more reflective Supreme Court precedent. Part I of this Article raises a number of issues for consideration relating to the epistemology of law and focuses especially on the concept of public reason and its critique. Part II addresses alternative approaches to legal reasoning suggested by classical accounts of practical reasoning and virtue theory and considers the operation of such legal analysis outside the area of substantive …

Title Ix As Pragmatic Feminism, Deborah L. Brake Jan 2007

Title Ix As Pragmatic Feminism, Deborah L. Brake

Cleveland State Law Review

This article examines Title IX as an example of a pragmatic approach to theory, and argues that pragmatic feminism is an approach that holds promise for feminists grappling with the complexity of gender oppression. Part II briefly examines pragmatism as an alternative to foundational theory and considers pragmatism's relationship to feminist legal theory. Part III explores the many forms and iterations of gender subordination in sports. Calls for a consistent, unifying theory of Title IX cannot account for the shifting nature and multiplicity of social and institutional practices that subordinate women in sports. These varied forms of subordination necessitate a …

Opening The Door To Possibilities: Research Journals In Pre-Service Art Education, Debrah Sickler-Voight Jan 2007

Opening The Door To Possibilities: Research Journals In Pre-Service Art Education, Debrah Sickler-Voight

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Preparing to be an art educator is a time when future teachers anticipate the endless possibilities the profession has to offer. Unfortunately, many leave teaching within a few years of service because of lack of support and preparation. This qualitative study investigates how preservice art education students enrolled in their first university art education course used the Art for Life method to create research journals. The research question that guided this study is: What themes drive student research journals and how does the exploration of these themes espouse preservice art education? After coding student journals, I discovered three majors themes …

Art Education In An Age Of Teletechnology: On The Impossibility Of Portraiture, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 2007

Art Education In An Age Of Teletechnology: On The Impossibility Of Portraiture, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Art since the Renaissance has been obsessed with the portrait and defined by it as the form of representation made even more iconic through the invention of photography where the notion of the profile became established as a sign of prosperity, prestige and power (Sekula, 1986). This enlightenment tradition of portraiture is not likely to perish at any given future date; the digitalization of the image continues to make the banal snap-shot proliferate at such an incredible rate identifying the thirst for personal representation in contemporary society. The explosion of celebrity magazines, the spread of the paparazzi, and the easy …

Maya Paintings As Teachers Of Justice: Art Making The Impossible Possible, Kryssi Staikidis Jan 2007

Maya Paintings As Teachers Of Justice: Art Making The Impossible Possible, Kryssi Staikidis

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This article examines Maya paintings as historical documents, political platforms and conduits for cultural transmission in two local Maya communities. Particular attention is paid to the recent history of genocide of Maya peoples in Guatemala and the production of paintings as visual reminders of cultural loss and regeneration, as well as visual means to protect Maya future generations. Collaborative ethnography and decolonizing methodologies (Lassiter, 1998; Tuhiwai-Smith, 1999) are used in this study; thus, Maya artists speak through written dialogues and interviews in first voice regarding massacres that were kept clandestine for three decades. This paper addresses the potential and capacity …

Techniques For Reclaiming Mined Lands With Native Plants, Maria Elena Melnechuk Jan 2007

Techniques For Reclaiming Mined Lands With Native Plants, Maria Elena Melnechuk

Theses and Dissertations

In this experiment I examined the role of mycorrhizae, seeding rate, and fertilizer in promoting growth of native plants at a reclaimed mine site in central Arkansas. Permanent field plots were established to examine effects of treatments on native plant cover, nonnative plant cover, and bare ground. By the final year of data collection, 18 native species had been newly established at the experimental site. Compared to plots without mycorrhizae, plots with mycorrhizae had significantly higher native plant cover in the first sampling year only. The addition of native seed was important—plots without added seed had significantly lower native plant …

Formulating The Triangle Of Doom, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Charles Goodwin, Alan Zemel, Gary Dunnington Jan 2007

Formulating The Triangle Of Doom, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Charles Goodwin, Alan Zemel, Gary Dunnington

Publications

Considerable attention has been paid in the CA literature to the glossing practices through which participants in conversation formulate who they are, what they are talking about, where the things they are talking about are located, and so forth. There are, of course, gestural glossing practices as well. For any concept or category presented gesturally, however, there is a range of possibilities from which a particular formulation may be adopted on any actual occasion of use. Identifying alternative formulations serves as a useful analytic exercise for exploring the pragmatic consequences of a produced gesture. In our own research, we have …

Comparative Fatty Acid Composition Of Eggs From White Bass Fed Live Food Or Commercial Feed, Ryan L. Lane, Christopher C. Kohler Jan 2007

Comparative Fatty Acid Composition Of Eggs From White Bass Fed Live Food Or Commercial Feed, Ryan L. Lane, Christopher C. Kohler

Publications

We evaluated the influence of two broodstock feeding practices on fatty acid composition and viability of eggs in white bass Morone chrysops. The two dietary groups tested were (1) white bass females fed a commercially formulated feed (crude protein, 45%; crude fat, 16%) and (2) white bass females maintained on live food (fathead minnow Pimephales promelas and golden shiners Notemigonus crysoleucas). Significant differences existed between the dietary treatments in egg fatty acid levels. Eggs of white bass fed live food contained more 11-octadecenoic acid (18:1[n-7]), α-linolenic acid (18:3[n-3]), arachidonic acid (20:4[n-6]), docosahexaenoic acid (22:6[n-3]), and total n-3 fatty …

Phylogenetic Relationships And Ecological Speciation In The Mistletoe Tristerix (Loranthaceae): The Influence Of Pollinators, Dispersers, And Hosts, Amico C. Guillermo, Romina Vidal-Russel, Daniel L. Nickrent Jan 2007

Phylogenetic Relationships And Ecological Speciation In The Mistletoe Tristerix (Loranthaceae): The Influence Of Pollinators, Dispersers, And Hosts, Amico C. Guillermo, Romina Vidal-Russel, Daniel L. Nickrent

Publications

Phylogenies can provide valuable information on biotic and abiotic factors associated with speciation. We examined species relationships in Tristerix (Loranthaceae), a genus of 11 species with an Andean distribution from Colombia to Chile. A previous classification divided Tristerix into subgenera Tristerix (two species) and Metastachys (nine species). We tested this classification by generating a molecular phylogeny of the genus using nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS and chloroplast atpB-rbcL intergenic spacer and trnL-F regions. All partitions generally gave congruent trees, thus a combined analysis was conducted. Tristerix was composed of a northern clade (six species) and a southern clade (four species). Tristerix …

Connecticut Government And Politics: An Introduction, Gary L. Rose

Sacred Heart University Press Books

Connecticut Government and Politics: An Introduction is a thoroughly revised and updated version of the author’s book, Connecticut Government at the Millennium (Sacred Heart University Press, 2001). Like the first edition, it is intended to introduce students and general readers to the historical development and current operation of Connecticut’s political system. Individual chapters explore constitutional history in “The Constitution State,” the transformation of Connecticut politics, the various mechanisms through which citizens can participate in political affairs, the structure and powers of the three branches of government, and the pivotal role of the mass media, newspapers in particular, in protecting the …

Winning It All: The Cinematic Construction Of The Athletic American Dream, Andrew Miller Jan 2007

Winning It All: The Cinematic Construction Of The Athletic American Dream, Andrew Miller

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

Powered by a philosophy of self-determination and an ideology of a level playing field, the Athletic American Dream has become firmly entrenched in American culture. Following narrative pattterns influenced by both newspaper sports sections and juvenile sports fiction, it coalesces around underdog-to-champion, hard-work-leads-to-victory narratives that shape the sporting imagination and help to forge the masculine ideal that is the foundation of American self-image. The Athletic American Dream is produced, packaged and sold by mass media so successfully that one could argue that it becomes the most dominant vision of the American Dream by the end of the twentieth century.

Electronic Performance Support For E-Learning Analysis And Design, Thomas W. Jury Jan 2007

Electronic Performance Support For E-Learning Analysis And Design, Thomas W. Jury

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Corporate instructional designers often follow an instructional systems design (ISD) process to plan, create, and implement training programs. Increased demand for elearning as a replacement or addition to classroom training means that, in the current corporate environment, instructional designers are called upon to produce a wide variety of instructional formats and have to make more decisions during the ISD process.

E-learning is evolving into a total performance improvement solution rather than simply as a means to delivering distance training and consequently, in an effort to achieve business goals, many corporations are turning to it as a cost effective way to …

Shrines And Prayers: Two Missing Elements Of Comprehensive Mass Fatality, Rhonda Keyes Pleasants Jan 2007

Shrines And Prayers: Two Missing Elements Of Comprehensive Mass Fatality, Rhonda Keyes Pleasants

Master's Theses

As a Licensed Funeral Service Provider, I am aware of the special issues which surround mass fatalities. A study of numerous mass fatality plans yielded identification of two missing elements from most plans which are critical to mass fatality management. The first missing element is ritual used in the respectful treatment of the dead. The second missing element is religious precepts regarding caring for and final disposition of the dead based upon the particular belief system of the deceased, their family, surrounding community, and culture. Specific qualitative methods of research used were a review of the professional literature, identification of …

Painting The Voice: Weblogs And Writing Instruction In The High School Classroom, Marilyn V. Olander Jan 2007

Painting The Voice: Weblogs And Writing Instruction In The High School Classroom, Marilyn V. Olander

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Writing is a complex cognitive skill, a technology for capturing speech whose forms and conventions began in the dawn of civilization and were in place and stable by the Middle Ages. Writing and reading are the foundation of literacy, fundamental to success in school and in the adult world. No comprehensive theory of composition guides the teaching of writing, although historically two approaches have been favored: writing as a skill acquired through the memorization and recognition of principles of grammar and usage, and more recently, writing as a process of recursive strategies of pi arming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. …

A Practical Approach To Phylogenomics: The Phylogeny Of Ray-Finned Fish (Actinopterygii) As A Case Study, Chenhong Li, Guillermo Orti, Gong Zhang, Guoqing Lu

Biology Faculty Publications

Background: Molecular systematics occupies one of the central stages in biology in the genomic era, ushered in by unprecedented progress in DNA technology. The inference of organismal phylogeny is now based on many independent genetic loci, a widely accepted approach to assemble the tree of life. Surprisingly, this approach is hindered by lack of appropriate nuclear gene markers for many taxonomic groups especially at high taxonomic level, partially due to the lack of tools for efficiently developing new phylogenetic makers. We report here a genome-comparison strategy to identifying nuclear gene markers for phylogenetic inference and apply it to the …

Electrical And Behavioral Courtship Displays In The Mormyrid Fish Brienomyrus Brachyistius, Ryan Y. Wong, Carl D. Hopkins Jan 2007

Electrical And Behavioral Courtship Displays In The Mormyrid Fish Brienomyrus Brachyistius, Ryan Y. Wong, Carl D. Hopkins

Biology Faculty Publications

Mormyrid electric fish rely on the waveform of their electric organ discharges (EODs) for communicating species, sex, and social status, while they use the sequences of pulse intervals (SPIs) for communicating rapidly changing behavioral states and motivation. Little is known of electric signaling during courtship behavior because of two major difficulties: (1) the fish are not easily bred in captivity and (2) there is no reliable means of separating electric signals from several individuals in natural communication settings. Through simulating artificial rain conditions, we have successfully induced courtship and succeeded in breeding a mormyrid electric fish (Brienomyrus brachyistius) in the …
