The Regenerative Rebuilding Strategy For Sustainable Coastal Communities. An Architectural Thesis And Case Study Of Rebuilding Post-Tsunami Sri Lanka., Kristina Iverson, Shannon Chance
Conference papers
Developments are occurring at a rapid pace along coastlines all over the world. In fact a full two-thirds of the world’s population, or 4 billion people, live within 250 miles of a coast1. In the United States architects have recognized the negative effects of existing building practices on beaches. In fact, designers have eagerly adopted methods of “sustainable design” to band-aid the problem. While seemingly an improvement upon past building practices, current movements in sustainable design focus on slowing down the degradation to the beach environment instead of encouraging healing practices. If we are to sustain the existence of both …

The Maxwell Case, John A. E. Pottow
The Maxwell Case, John A. E. Pottow
Book Chapters
This chapter will provide some broader context regarding the famous Maxwell Communication bankruptcy, which is one of the most significant cross-border insolvency precedents to date.1 It does so by first looking at Bob Maxwell's life and business in roughly chronological stages (the good, the bad, and the ugly). It then explores the insolvency proceedings that bear his name (the beautiful) and one specific litigation action within those proceedings of particular importance (the exquisite). Finally, it offers some brief reflection on what the Maxwell case may have taught us (the sublime).
Spatial Ecology, Habitat Selection, And Survival Of Wild Turkey Gobblers In A Managed Bottomland Hardwood Forest, Blake Anthony Grisham
Spatial Ecology, Habitat Selection, And Survival Of Wild Turkey Gobblers In A Managed Bottomland Hardwood Forest, Blake Anthony Grisham
LSU Master's Theses
Wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) males were captured and radio-tagged in a bottomland hardwood forest of south-central Louisiana. Turkeys were monitored year round from fixed telemetry stations on Sherburne Wildlife Management Area, Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge, and Bayou des Ourses to observe seasonal patterns of space use, habitat selection and survival from 2005-07. The largest seasonal home range was in fall/winter (966.41 ha; Oct 1-Feb 28). Spring home range (767.77 ha; Mar 1- May 31) size was lower than reported in previous studies and was a function of female availability. Season and age interacted to influence core area size (F5/63 …
Once Upon A Time: A Model Literature Based Approach To Teaching Social Studies In Early Childhood, Kristi Louisa Martone
Once Upon A Time: A Model Literature Based Approach To Teaching Social Studies In Early Childhood, Kristi Louisa Martone
All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project was to design an early childhood social studies curriculum that integrated the use of children's literature, to be used in early childhood classrooms. Listening to and reading stories about social studies topics helps students to see the importance of various social studies issues and will allow them to connect personally with the theme by completing a wide range of related activities. National and state standards require students to understand many social studies concepts and using children's literature as a vehicle for learning the required standards can help students see the idea that social studies relates …
Where The Sun Shines Through The Mist: Moments In A Southern Californian Childhood, Danielle Marie Orner
Where The Sun Shines Through The Mist: Moments In A Southern Californian Childhood, Danielle Marie Orner
Whittier Scholars Program
As a young girl, I would curl up next to my mother on the couch each night and listen to her read aloud. With my head– still wet and smelling of shampoo from my evening bath– leaning on her forearm and my bare feet tucked up under my nightgown, i could feel the vibrations of her voice traveling from my body. Closing my eyes, I let her words transport me to prairies where women’s calico skirts swirl with slender stalks of grass in wild bursts of wind, to mossy dungeons haunted by ancient curses, and into the earthen burrows of …

In collaboration with the Museum of African American History, an archaeological research team from the University of Massachusetts Boston carried out a data recovery excavation at the African Meeting House on Beacon Hill. The African Meeting House was a powerful social institution for 19thcentury Boston’s free black community. The site played an important role in the abolition movement, the creation of educational opportunity, and other community action for social and political equality. The Meeting House was originally built in 1806, and renovations in preparation for the 2006 bi-centennial celebration prompted an investigation of areas of the property to be impacted …

Evects Of In Vivo Exposure To Deet On Blood Feeding Behavior And Fecundity In Anopheles Quadrimaculatus (Diptera: Culicidae), Rui-De Xue, Arshad Ali, Donald R. Barnard
Evects Of In Vivo Exposure To Deet On Blood Feeding Behavior And Fecundity In Anopheles Quadrimaculatus (Diptera: Culicidae), Rui-De Xue, Arshad Ali, Donald R. Barnard
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
This study determined the effects of contact with DEET on guinea pig skin on mortality, probing time, blood feeding rate, engorgement time, and fecundity responses in female Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say. Exposure, in this manner, to 10% DEET (in ethanol) for 5min, resulted in 98% mortality in mosquitoes after 24 h. The median probing time (PT50) required by females, when exposed to 0.1%, 1.0%, and 10% DEET, was significantly (P< 0.0001) longer (12.5, 12.1, and 19.1 s, respectively) than the 6.8 s required by females to probe ethanol-treated skin (control). Similarly, mean blood feeding rates in populations of females exposed to 1.0% DEET for ≤5min (14.4%) was 6x lower (P <0.001) (85.5%) than in females exposed to ethanol-treated skin, whereas the mean engorgement time on skin treated with 1.0% DEET (66.3 s) was significantly shorter (P<0.0001) than for females feeding on the control guinea pigs (105.9 s). The mean number of mature oöcytes per female (fecundity) in treatment (1.0% DEET) and control mosquitoes was not significantly different. The responses to DEET observed in this study suggest that repeated exposure of female A. quadrimaculatus populations to this repellent, in laboratory bioassays, could result in confounding of toxicant and repellent effects and inaccurate estimates of DEET repellency.
Fish And Wildlife Benefits Associated With Wetland Establishment Practices, Charles A. Rewa
Fish And Wildlife Benefits Associated With Wetland Establishment Practices, Charles A. Rewa
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Efforts to establish wetlands through restoration and creation actions have increased in recent decades in response to regulatory and voluntary incentive programs. This paper summarizes the findings of studies conducted to document fish and wildlife response to these practices. The majority of published studies describe bird response to wetland restoration, with most reporting bird communities in restored wetlands to be similar to those of natural reference wetlands. Studies also indicate that invertebrates and amphibians generally respond quickly to and colonize newly established wetland habitats. Key factors reported as correlated with wildlife species richness include wetland size, availability of nearby wetlands …
Feed Grains Backgrounder, Linwood Hoffman, Allen Baker, Linda Foreman, C. Edwin Young
Feed Grains Backgrounder, Linwood Hoffman, Allen Baker, Linda Foreman, C. Edwin Young
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The U.S. feed grain sector, largest of the major U.S. field crops, faces unprecedented demand conditions. The size and speed of the expanding use of corn by the ethanol industry is raising widespread issues throughout the U.S. agricultural sector. Debate is ongoing over the use of grain for fuel instead of for food or feed and the adequacy of future grain supplies. Increased productivity (yield) and additional area from land planted to competing crops, land enrolled in conservation programs, or idled land is expected to provide an increased supply of feed grains. In 2003, U.S. feed grain farms had an …

Effect Of Drying On Phosphorus Distribution In Poultry Manure, Heidi W. Dail, Zhongqi He, M. Susan Erich, C. Wayne Honeycutt
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Laboratory drying may alter manure phosphorus (P) distribution. The effects of freeze, air (22 °C), and oven (65 °C) drying on sequentially fractioned poultry manure P were examined. Higher drying temperatures resulted in lower percentage of dry matter. Increased H2O- and decreased sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3)-extractable P with drying provided evidence that drying increases poultry manure P solubility. Labile fractions were predominantly inorganic P (Pi), whereas sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) fractions had significant amounts of organic P (Po). Drying altered H2O- and NaHCO3-extractable Pi but …

Efficiency Of Gene Silencing In Arabidopsis : Direct Inverted Repeats Vs. Transitive Rnai Vectors, Sergei A. Filichkin, Stephen P. Difazio, Amy M. Brunner, John M. Davis, Zamin K. Yang, Udaya C. Kalluri, R. S. Arias, Elizabeth Etherington, Gerald A. Tuskan, Steven H. Strauss
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
We investigated the efficiency of RNA interference (RNAi) in Arabidopsis using transitive and homologous inverted repeat (hIR) vectors. hIR constructs carry self-complementary intron-spliced fragments of the target gene whereas transitive vectors have the target sequence fragment adjacent to an intron-spliced, inverted repeat of heterologous origin. Both transitive and hIR constructs facilitated specific and heritable silencing in the three genes studied (AP1 , ETTIN and TTG1). Both types of vectors produced a phenotypic series that phenocopied reduction of function mutants for the respective target gene. The hIR yielded up to fourfold higher proportions of events with strongly manifested reduction …

Classification Of Dry-Milled Maize Grit Yield Groups Using Quadratic Discriminant Analysis And Decision Tree Algorithm, Kyung-Min Lee, Timothy J. Herrman, Scott R. Bean, David S. Jackson, Jane Lingenfelser
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
A genetically and environmentally diverse collection of maize (Zea maize L.) samples was evaluated for physical properties and grit yield to help develop a standard set of criteria to identify grain best suited for dry milling. Application of principal component analysis (PCA) reduced a set of approximately 500 samples collected from six states to 154 maize hybrids. Selected maize hybrids were placed into seven groups according to their dry-milled grit yields. Regression analysis explained only 50% of the variability in dry-milling grit yield. Patterns of differences in the physical properties for the seven grit yield groups implied that the …

The USDA Soil Conservation Service (USDA‐SCS) realized the importance of understanding hydrologic processes on agricultural fields and watersheds in the mid‐1930s. Based on this realization, the research program of the Hydrologic Division of SCS established three experimental watersheds across the U.S. to analyze the impact of landuse practices on soil erosion, flood events, water resources, and the agricultural economy. Two of the original watersheds remain in operation today within the USDA Agricultural Research Service (USDA‐ARS): the Blacklands Experimental Watershed (now the Grassland, Soil and Water Research Laboratory) near Riesel, Texas, and the North Appalachian Experimental Watershed near Coshocton, Ohio. These …
Design And Testing Of A Closed, Stirring Respirometer For Measuring Oxygen Consumption Of Channel Catfish Eggs, Eugene L. Torrans
Design And Testing Of A Closed, Stirring Respirometer For Measuring Oxygen Consumption Of Channel Catfish Eggs, Eugene L. Torrans
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
A closed, stirring respirometer was designed to agitate small egg mass samples of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus while measuring oxygen consumption by the eggs. Egg mass samples ranging in size from 15 to 46 g were placed on a screen platform above a magnetic stir bar in the respirometer; the degree of agitation was controlled with a magnetic stir plate. Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and temperature were measured with a luminescent DO sensor and meter. The respirometer was used to determine routine metabolic rate and limiting oxygen concentration (the presumed hypometabolic transition zone) on egg mass samples from 10 different …
Relic Hunting, Archaeology, And Loss Of Native American Heritage At The Dalles, Virginia L. Butler
Relic Hunting, Archaeology, And Loss Of Native American Heritage At The Dalles, Virginia L. Butler
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Assesses the damage done to Native American sites and heritage by relic hunters and archaeologists digging in the mid-Columbia River region that was inundated by completion of The Dalles Dam in 1957. Long before the dam was built, relic hunters disturbed grave sites and mounds in their search for artifacts. The artifacts went into private collections or were sold, without concern for their context or for the rights and concerns of native people. The article also discusses the development of the profession of archaeology and the ways professional archaeologists were complicit in the desecration of native sites. Sites along the river …

Mississippi River Stories: Lessons From A Century Of Unnatural Disasters, Christine A. Klein, Sandra B. Zellmer
UF Law Faculty Publications
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the nation pondered how a relatively weak Category 3 storm could have destroyed an entire region. Few appreciated the extent to which a flawed federal water development policy transformed this apparently natural disaster into a "manmade" disaster; fewer still appreciated how the disaster was the predictable, and indeed predicted, sequel to almost a century of similar disasters. This Article focuses upon three such stories: the Great Flood of 1927, the Midwest Flood of 1993, and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita of 2005. Taken together, the stories reveal important lessons, including the inadequacy of engineered flood …
Regulating Evolution For Sale: An Evolutionary Biology Model For Regulating The Unnatural Selection Of Genetically Modified Organisms, Mary Jane Angelo
Regulating Evolution For Sale: An Evolutionary Biology Model For Regulating The Unnatural Selection Of Genetically Modified Organisms, Mary Jane Angelo
UF Law Faculty Publications
In recent years, there has been an explosion in the genetic manipulation of living organisms to create commercial products. This genetic manipulation has, in effect, been a directed change in the evolutionary process for the purpose of profit. This deliberate alteration of the path of evolution has brought with it a panoply of novel environmental, human health, and economic risks that could not have been foreseen when U.S. environmental and health protection laws evolved. U.S. environmental law has not evolved to keep pace with these dramatic changes in the evolution of our biological systems. Thus, completely new approaches are needed …

Fast-Scan Cyclic Voltammetry - Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Luis Díaz-Ballote, Mario A. Apuche-Avlles, David O. Wipf
CAS Publications
The use of fast scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) to generate images in scanning electrochemical microscopy is demonstrated. In the FSCV-SECM method a cyclic voltammogram is acquired at each grid point of the scanned area. Thus, each point in the SECM image is a data array rather than a single value. This provides a significant increase in the amount of data collected per scan and provides the ability to make images of multiple analytes per scan. In addition, the use of cyclic voltammetry allows images based on adsorptive as well as diffusional processes. In this paper, we describe the FSCV-SECM experiment …
Fourth Amendment Lessons From The Highway And The Subway: A Principled Approach To Suspicionless Searches, Ricardo J. Bascuas
Fourth Amendment Lessons From The Highway And The Subway: A Principled Approach To Suspicionless Searches, Ricardo J. Bascuas
Articles
The threat of future terrorist attacks has sped the proliferation of random, suspicionless searches and seizures, such as those now made of New York City subway riders. Courts assess the legality of such searches with an inherently flawed balancing test developed to assess searches and seizures made without "probable cause." Although scholars and Justices alike have decried the resort to balancing individual interests against the government's need to search, no alternative framework has been proposed. This Article proposes a more principled, objective inquiry for determining when suspicionless searches can be made. To eliminate the need for balancing, this Article advances …
