Effectiveness Of Social Competence Promotion On Disruptive Behavior:A Quantitative Review, Diane L. Whipple Jan 2007

Effectiveness Of Social Competence Promotion On Disruptive Behavior:A Quantitative Review, Diane L. Whipple

Open Access Dissertations

A meta-analysis was conducted that examined the effects of both incorporating parents as treatment agents and involving a varying number of treatment agents in social-skills programs with 2,693 children displaying disruptive behavior. Children participated in social-skills training that included different combinations of treatment agents including clinicians, teachers, parents, and peers. Results indicated that programs incorporating a parent component and those not including parents as treatment agents both increased participants' social competence post-treatment. No evidence was found, however, that incorporating a parent component in programs increased treatment benefits. Social-skills training incorporating various combinations of one, two, three, and four treatment agents …

Aristotelian Privacy: Perfectionism, Pornography, And The Virtues Of The Polis, G. Scott Davis Jan 2007

Aristotelian Privacy: Perfectionism, Pornography, And The Virtues Of The Polis, G. Scott Davis

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In the United States privacy is a hot topic, not least because of the current administration's desire to have unbridled access to its citizens' overseas conversations. But in what follows I do not plan to deal directly with any legal or policy concerns. Instead, I am interested in the philosophical foundations,- if any there be, of privacy as something to which individuals and other groups may be entitled. Because much of the discussion of "privacy rights" has revolved around matters sexual, I shall key the discussion to individual access to sexually explicit publications and what limits, if any, moral reflection …

The Future Of Footnote Four, Dan T. Coenen Jan 2007

The Future Of Footnote Four, Dan T. Coenen

Georgia Law Review

The Supreme Court's decision in United States v. Carolene Products Co. generated the most famous footnote-and perhaps the most famous passage-in all of the American Judiciary's treatment of constitutional law. Among other things, Footnote Four suggested that "prejudice against discrete and insular minorities may be a special condition, which tends seriously to curtail the operation of those political processes ordinarily to be relied upon to protect minorities, and which may call for a correspondingly more searching judicial inquiry."' The importance of this principle cannot be overstated. It pervaded the work of the Warren Court2 and has played a prominent role …

From Words To Action: The Impact And Legal Status Of The 2006 National Wildlife Refuge System Management Policies, Robert L. Fischman Jan 2007

From Words To Action: The Impact And Legal Status Of The 2006 National Wildlife Refuge System Management Policies, Robert L. Fischman

Articles by Maurer Faculty

On June 26, 2006, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) issued three new final policies governing the conservation of the national wildlife refuge system. These new agency manual provisions nearly complete an implementation project that began shortly after Congress enacted an organic statute in 1997 for management of the refuges. This article briefly reviews the significance of the 1997 legislation and places the new policies in the context of the statutory framework. It then discusses the most important aspects of the policies in terms of both practical refuge management and broader trends in natural resources law. The article evaluates …

La DesmitificacióN De La ColonizacióN En La Literatura Contemporanea Latinoamericana, Lidia E. Fuego-Lazo.

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Every writer has codes that need to be identified on his work. Most of the time, a good author has something to denounce in society. They use literature as a means to express it. A good reader has the responsibility to find the real story behind a writer’s text.

In this case, there are two masterpieces written at different times from each other but full of codes which tie them together. They are: The Harp and the Shadow by Alejo Carpentier and Hie Pond, by Manuel Zeno Gandía. These books have something in common: they establish a connective link between …

The Use Of Music To Stimulate Joint Attention As A Developmental Step In The Language Acquisition Of Children With Autism : A Descriptive Case Study, Cynthia D. Longley Jan 2007

The Use Of Music To Stimulate Joint Attention As A Developmental Step In The Language Acquisition Of Children With Autism : A Descriptive Case Study, Cynthia D. Longley

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This descriptive case study details music therapy with one five-year-old boy named Yitzchak who presented with autistic spectrum disorder. A literature review of aspects of a developmental skill, joint attention, is presented as a basis for the work. It defines joint attention and communication, as well as music’s effect on these skills within a developmental, individual-difference, relationship-based philosophy. An investigation was conducted to test music’s efficacy as a stimulus to increase joint attention behaviors and therefore increase language output. The results show positive trends of increases in eye contact and musical/communicative behaviors in a short-term therapy sequence of sessions as …

La Representation Litteraire Du Paysan FrançAis Par Balzac, Sand Et Zola, Morad Mitta Jan 2007

La Representation Litteraire Du Paysan FrançAis Par Balzac, Sand Et Zola, Morad Mitta

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

"The Problematic Business Of Living Itself" : David Mamet's Devolving Theater, Kristopher Aaron Spring Jan 2007

"The Problematic Business Of Living Itself" : David Mamet's Devolving Theater, Kristopher Aaron Spring

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

David Mamet's ’style is remarkably minimal; there is little in the way of stage direction and his dialogue is often a staccato vernacular. At the same time, within the apparently loose frameworks of his plays lie the seeds of their own destruction: Mamet makes up for the lack of obvious, literal stage direction with the subtle downward spiral of the plot; the coarse frankness of the language depicts worlds nearly devoid of - or at least rapidly losing - their sense of morality or whatever implicit ideas and ideals are central to maintaining the appearance of the status quo. Whether …

Famous Trademarks And The Rational Basis For Protecting Irrational Beliefs, J. Shahar Dillbary Jan 2007

Famous Trademarks And The Rational Basis For Protecting Irrational Beliefs, J. Shahar Dillbary

Articles

Contrary to the traditional view, this article argues that mega-brands are neither economic evils nor limited to imparting information about the products they adom. It also rejects the view that famous marks persuade "snobs" to "irrationally" pay more for the same physical product they could have purchased for less. Rather, it adopts the view that in purchasing a branded good, the consumer is actually purchasing a bundle of three prod- ucts: a physical product, information about the physical product, and an intangible product, such as fame, prestige, peace of mind, or a pleasant feel- ing. This article explores the demand …

Abraham Heschel And The Catholic Heart, Padraic O'Hare Jan 2007

Abraham Heschel And The Catholic Heart, Padraic O'Hare

Religious & Theological Studies Faculty Publications

This essay associates the deep abiding influence of Rabbi Heschel on Christians with his unique expression of an incarnational religious imagination, appealing to all Christians with a "Cathoic heart." In this view, the opposing worldview to dualism, life is experienced sacramentally, God is experienced immanently and religious symbols are experienced as deeply efficacious. The essay focuses especially on the incarnational trait of associating mystical experience and contemplative prayer with prophetic action and reveals how this link is nurtured and cultivated by Heschel and by his friend, Thomas Merton.

Are You What You Eat? An Inside Look At High-Tech Food, Roxanne Greitz Miller

Education Faculty Articles and Research

If we abide by the familiar saying "you are what you eat," it is understandable that people may be concerned with the incredible advances in food science technology and their possible impacts on human health. For example, in recent years high-tech scientific processes such as genetic modification, irradiation, and cloning have all been used to increase the safety of food supply, create foods that are more appealing to eat and easier to produce, and increase crop yields. This article will summarize a few hot topics in food science, address what is currently known about the safety of these processes, and …

Does Increasing Biology Teacher Knowledge Of Evolution And The Nature Of Science Lead To Greater Advocacy For The Teaching Of Evolution In Schools?, Ross Nehm, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

This study investigated whether or not an increase in secondary science teacher knowledge about evolution and the nature of science gained from completing a graduate-level evolution course was associated with greater preference for the teaching of evolution in schools. Forty-four precertified secondary biology teachers participated in a 14-week intervention designed to address documented misconceptions identified by a precourse instrument. The course produced statistically significant gains in teacher knowledge of evolution and the nature of science and a significant decrease in misconceptions about evolution and natural selection. Nevertheless, teachers' postcourse preference positions remained unchanged; the majority of science teachers still preferred …

Role Of The Medial Septal Area In Regulating Prefrontal Theta Rhythm In Rats, Leo Kelly '07 Jan 2007

Role Of The Medial Septal Area In Regulating Prefrontal Theta Rhythm In Rats, Leo Kelly '07

Honors Projects

Theta rhythms are electroencephalogram (EEG) waveforms between 4-12 Hz and are correlated with arousal, orientation, exploration, attention, learning and memory, motivational drives and emotions and movements. The last sixty years have been witness to a greatly increasing understanding of the underlying anatomical pathways and mechanisms necessary for theta rhythms. Today, it is well established that cells of the medial septal area (MSA) fire in a rhythmic bursting pattern to pace the theta rhythm in the hippocampus (HPC) and that lesioning the MSA abolishes theta rhythm in the HPC. However, comparatively little is known about the anatomy driving the theta rhythm …

Satiation, Habituation, And Elasticity: An Economic Analysis, Amanda Zang '07 Jan 2007

Satiation, Habituation, And Elasticity: An Economic Analysis, Amanda Zang '07

Honors Projects

Response rates typically change systematically within operant conditioning sessions. Proposed explanations for this phenomenon include habituation and satiation. The present study investigated these explanations. Six Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to a series of variable interval (VI) schedules. Each schedule consisted of a baseline, same pre-feed, and different pre-feed condition. During the same pre-feed, the rats received the same food as was earned during the session, whereas in the different pre-feed, the rats received a food that differed from that earned during the session. A larger decrease in responding during a same food pre-feed condition would support habituation as the explanation. …

Effects Of Guanfacine On Mnemonic Processing Following Lesion To Rat Medial Septum: A Novel Treatment Approach To Alzheimer's Memory Type Deficits, Mark D. Opal '07 Jan 2007

Effects Of Guanfacine On Mnemonic Processing Following Lesion To Rat Medial Septum: A Novel Treatment Approach To Alzheimer's Memory Type Deficits, Mark D. Opal '07

Honors Projects

Cognitive deficits associated with Alzheimer's disease are known to result from decreases in acetylcholine within the cholinergic system of the medial septal area, which projects to the hippocampus. The significance of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine within this context has not been extensively reviewed. The present study measured the effects that Guanfacine, an alpha-2 noradrenergic agonist, has on memory deficits produced by cholinergic cell lesion in the rat medial septum. Memory processing during pre-lesion, post-lesion, and post-drug administration groups was quantified using a socially transmitted food preference task. Following administration of the cholinergic neurotoxin 192 IgG-saporin, subjects exhibited a significant decrease in …
