Fluoxetine, Smoking, And History Of Major Depression: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Bonnie Spring, Neal Doran, Sherry Pagoto, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Jessica Werth Cook, Katherine Bailey, John Crayton, Donald Hedecker
Fluoxetine, Smoking, And History Of Major Depression: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Bonnie Spring, Neal Doran, Sherry Pagoto, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Jessica Werth Cook, Katherine Bailey, John Crayton, Donald Hedecker
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The study was a randomized placebo-controlled trial testing whether fluoxetine selectively enhances cessation for smokers with a history of depression. Euthymic smokers with (H+, n = 109) or without (H-, n = 138) a history of major depression received 60 mg fluoxetine or placebo plus group behavioral quit-smoking treatment for 12 weeks. Fluoxetine initially enhanced cessation for H+ smokers (p = .02) but subsequently impaired cessation regardless of depressive history. Six months after quit date, fluoxetine-treated participants were 3.3 times more likely to be smoking (p = .02). Further research is warranted to determine why high-dose fluoxetine produces …
A Reevaluation Of Some Iconographic Motifs On The Taanach Cult Stand, Brian R. Doak
A Reevaluation Of Some Iconographic Motifs On The Taanach Cult Stand, Brian R. Doak
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
Since its discovery in 1968, the so-called “Taanach cult stand” has generated no small amount of scholarly controversy; indeed, the unique combination of images on the stand evoke a variety of interpretations, perhaps due to the sheer number of key iconographic motifs used in combination and their implications for the history of religion within the borders of ancient “Israel” in the 10th century BCE. The imagery on the Taanach stand raises a series of provocative questions regarding many recent discussions, such as: Was the Israelite national deity, YHWH, depicted iconographically in ancient Israel, and are any of these images on …
The Approach Of The Black Death In Switzerland And The Persecution Of Jews, 1348–1349, Albert Winkler
The Approach Of The Black Death In Switzerland And The Persecution Of Jews, 1348–1349, Albert Winkler
Faculty Publications
When the Black Death approached the Swiss states in 1348, the news of the approaching pestilence traveled faster than the Plague. This gave the Swiss time to react and try to prevent its arrival. The Swiss did not know what caused the Black Death, but they feared that the Jews were poisoning water wells in order to cause the plague. At Chillon and elsewhere, Jews were tortured for confessions, which were clearly worthless. In a climate of fear and severe prejudice, Jews were killed in numerous communities including Basel, Bern, Zurich, and Kyburg by being burned to death. Execution by …

The Commerciality Doctrine As Applied To The Charitable Tax Exemption For Homes For The Aged: State And Local Tax Perspectives, David A. Brennen
The Commerciality Doctrine As Applied To The Charitable Tax Exemption For Homes For The Aged: State And Local Tax Perspectives, David A. Brennen
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This essay examines the question of how state and local government officials should consider federal tax law principles, like the commerciality doctrine, when they challenge state and local property tax exemptions that rely, at least in part, on tax-exempt charitable status for federal income tax purposes. In particular, this essay uses the example of continuing care retirement communities to consider tax-exempt law’s commerciality doctrine in an attempt to discern distinctions between “homes for the aged” that are “charitable,” and thus entitled to exemption, and those that are too commercial, and thus not entitled to exemption. In fact, one might say …
Health Care Law, Sean P. Byrne, Paul Walkinshaw
Health Care Law, Sean P. Byrne, Paul Walkinshaw
University of Richmond Law Review
Arguably, no other field of law in Virginia matches the complexity, magnitude, and universality of health care. It therefore comes as little surprise that Virginia's legislative and judicial branches of government devoted substantial attention to health care law issues in 2006 and 2007. Between April 2006 and April 2007 the time period covered by this article the Supreme Court of Virginia decided a large number of cases directly affecting health care law in the Commonwealth. The 2007 legislative session also addressed a host of health care issues and those with the most impact are summarized herein. These judicial and legislative …

Role Of Adiponectin And Inflammation In Insulin Resistance Of Mc3r And Mc4r Knockout Mice, James L. Trevaskis, Barbara Gawronska-Kozak, Gregory M. Sutton, Michele Mcneil, Jacqueline M. Stephens, Steven R. Smith, Andrew A. Butler
Faculty Publications
Objective: To investigate the involvement of hypoadiponectinemia and inflammation in coupling obesity to insulin resistance in melanocortin-3 receptor and melanocortin-4 receptor knockout (KO) mice (Mc3/4rKO). Research Methods and Procedures: Sera and tissue were collected from 6-month-old Mc3rKO, Mc4rKO, and wild-type C57BL6J litter mates maintained on low-fat diet or exposed to high-fat diet (HFD) for 1 or 3 months. Inflammation was assessed by both real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis of macrophage-specific gene expression and immunohistochemistry. Results: Mc4rKO exhibited hypoadiponectinemia, exacerbated by HFD and obesity, previously reported in murine models of obesity. Mc4r deficiency was also associated with high levels of macrophage …
Finding Yosemite: A Reflection On Conservation, Jennifer Witkowski
Finding Yosemite: A Reflection On Conservation, Jennifer Witkowski
Theses
Yosemite National Park has always been a National treasure of natural beauty, making it a popular tourist attraction by providing protection for unique geological formations, wildlife, and land of historic value. The parks mission is to provide recreation while educating and preserving the history and environment in which the park resides on. Recently, the mission of Yosemite National Park has been threatened by an increase in the number of people who visit the park annually and budget cuts that have a direct effect on the amount of resources the park has available to counteract the environmental impact of the rise …

Affective Decision Making: A Behavioral Theory Of Choice, Anat Bracha, Donald J. Brown
Affective Decision Making: A Behavioral Theory Of Choice, Anat Bracha, Donald J. Brown
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Affective decision-making is a strategic model of choice under risk and uncertainty where we posit two cognitive processes — the “rational” and the “emotional” process. Observed choice is the result of equilibirum in this intrapersonal game. As an example, we present applications of affective decision-making in insurance markets, where the risk perceptions of consumers are endogenous. We then derive the axiomatic foundation of affective decision making, and show that, although beliefs are endogenous, not every pattern of behavior is possible under affective decision making.

Calcium-Dependent Fast Depolarizing Afterpotentials In Vasopressin Neurons In The Rat Supraoptic Nucleus, Ryoichi Teruyama, William E. Armstrong
Calcium-Dependent Fast Depolarizing Afterpotentials In Vasopressin Neurons In The Rat Supraoptic Nucleus, Ryoichi Teruyama, William E. Armstrong
Faculty Publications
Oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP) synthesizing magnocellular cells (MNCs) in the supraoptic nucleus (SON) display distinct firing patterns during the physiological demands for these hormones. Depolarizing afterpotentials (DAPs) in these neurons are involved in controlling phasic bursting in VP neurons. Our whole cell recordings demonstrated a Cs+-resistant fast DAP (fDAP; decay tau = ∼200 ms), which has not been previously reported, in addition to the well-known Cs+-sensitive slower DAP (sDAP; decay tau = ∼2 s). Immunoidentification of recorded neurons revealed that all VP neurons, but only 20% of OT neurons, expressed the fDAP. The activation of the fDAP required influx …

Sound Production And Spectral Hearing Sensitivity In The Hawaiian Sergeant Damselfish, Abudefduf Abdominalis, Karen P. Maruska, Kelly S. Boyle, Laura R. Dewan, Timothy C. Tricas
Faculty Publications
Sounds provide important signals for inter- and intraspecific communication in fishes, but few studies examine fish acoustic behavior in the context of coevolution of sound production and hearing ability within a species. This study characterizes the acoustic behavior in a reproductive population of the Hawaiian sergeant fish, Abudefduf abdominalis, and compares acoustic features to hearing ability, measured by the auditory evoked potential (AEP) technique. Sergeant fish produce sounds at close distances to the intended receiver (≤1-2 body lengths), with different pulse characteristics that are associated primarily with aggression, nest preparation and courtship-female-visit behaviors. Energy peaks of all sounds were between …

34/1 | Excavations At Kadesh Barnea (Tell El-Qudeirat) 1976–1982, Part 1: Text, Rudolph Cohen, Hannah Bernick-Greenberg
IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
This volume, comprised of two parts: text and plates, presents the results of the excavations at Tell el-Qudeirat, located in an oasis in the northern Sinai desert and identified as biblical Kadesh Barnea. The excavations, which took place over ten seasons (1976–1982), revealed a stratigraphic sequence of three superimposed Iron Age fortresses. The plans and architecture of the fortresses, as well as the pottery, including the family of ‘Negebite Ware’, are described.

How To Solve (Or Avoid) The Exactions Problem, Richard A. Epstein
Missouri Law Review
It is my great honor to deliver the Earl F. Nelson lecture for the year 2007. I have never met Mr. Nelson, but I have looked at the roster of distinguished people who have spoken in this lecture series, and I am pleased to have my name added to such an august list. I would also like to add my tribute to Dale Whitman, to whom this Conference has been dedicated. I regard him as a one-man version of Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside, a reference to - for those of you who remember - the old Army teams from …

Revolutionary Peacemaking: Using A Critical Pedagogy Approach For Peacemaking With "Terrorists", Steven Best, Peter Mclaren, Anthony J. Nocella Ii
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"The current global political atmosphere is steeped in fear of, and intense rhetoric about, political violence and "terrorism." Amidst this turbulent environment, it is clear that scholars and practitioners need to get beyond the manufactured fear and the hysterical rhetoric, peddled by what we call the corporate-state-military-media complex (or simply, the "power complex"), and instead seek a deeper understanding of political groups that defend or deploy the tactics of economic sabotage (property destruction) or armed struggle in order to change repressive and violent social structures (Best and Nocella 2004; Best and Nocella 2006). Such understanding is important to slow down …

2006 Michigan Dairy Farm Business Analysis Summary, Eric Wittenberg, Christopher Wolf
2006 Michigan Dairy Farm Business Analysis Summary, Eric Wittenberg, Christopher Wolf
Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database
This report summarizes the financial and production records of 139 dairy farms from throughout Michigan in 2006. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from milk and dairy animal sales. The records came from Michigan State University’s TelFarm project and the Farm Credit Service system in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. The farms are larger than would be the average of all dairy farms in Michigan. While considerable variation in the data exists, average values are reported in the summary tables and discussion that follows.

The First Two Years Of Housing First In Quincy, Massachusetts: "This Place Gives Me Peace, Happiness, And Hope", Tatjana Meschede
Center for Social Policy Publications
Housing First is a housing and support services program that attempts to move the most disabled homeless people directly to housing prior to treatment, using housing as the transforming element to support participation in treatment. This approach does not require sobriety or participation in long-term treatment programs unlike the traditional continuum of care approach. Promising results have been demonstrated in a number of projects using this model (Tsemberis & Eisenberg, 2000).
For the past ten years, Father Bill’s Place (FBP), a homeless shelter and housing program in Quincy, Massachusetts, has moved steadily towards providing permanent housing with supportive services, rather …

Deletion mutants of the two sortase genes of Enterococcus faecalis OG1RF were constructed. srtC (renamed here bps for biofilm and pilus-associated sortase) was previously shown to be necessary for the production of Ebp pili and important for biofilm formation and endocarditis. Here, we report that a srtA deletion mutant showed a small (5%) yet significant (P = 0.037) reduction in biofilm relative to OG1RF, while a DeltasrtA Deltabps double mutant showed a much greater reduction (74% versus OG1RF and 44% versus the Deltabps mutant). In a murine urinary tract infection (UTI), the 50% infective doses of both the DeltasrtA Deltabps …

Toward Informational Privacy Rights, Adam D. Moore
San Diego Law Review
In this paper I will offer several arguments in support of the view that individuals have moral claims to control personal information. Coupled with rights to control access to one's body, capacities, and powers, or physical privacy rights, we will have taken important steps toward a general right to privacy. In Part I, a definition of privacy is offered along with an account of the value of privacy. Simply put, privacy - defined as control over access to locations and information - is necessary for human well-being. In Part II, an attempt to move beyond claims of value to claims …

How To Understand Legislatures: A Comment On Boudreau, Lupia, Mccubbins, And Rodriguez, Larry Alexander
San Diego Law Review
Much has been written about legal interpretation, and I have serious disagreements with most of it. So it is quite refreshing to read an article on the topic that, from my perspective, gets the topic right from start to finish. As an added bonus, two of the authors are my former colleagues. My enthusiasm for the approach taken by Boudreau, Lupia, McCubbins, and Rodriguez (hereinafter BLMR) has not proven fatal to my task of commenting on the article. I am not reduced to saying "Right on" and then signing off. There are issues to be flagged. Nonetheless, so much of …
