Deference As A Form Of Reciprocity Among Residents In Assisted Living, Cindy A. Beel-Bates, Berit Ingersoll-Dayton, Erika Nelson Nov 2007

Deference As A Form Of Reciprocity Among Residents In Assisted Living, Cindy A. Beel-Bates, Berit Ingersoll-Dayton, Erika Nelson

Peer Reviewed Articles

Although the ability to provide support to others may diminish with age, the desire to reciprocate persists. Using social exchange theory, this article examines deference as one form of exchange. Based on a sample of 31 residents age 85 and older in assisted living facilities, data were gathered via a semi-structured interview that was audio-taped and transcribed. This study analyzes their responses to open-ended questions using qualitative methods. Findings indicate that these “oldest old” respondents reciprocate for the support they receive from family and staff via deference. Four forms of deference are identified: participation, pleasantness, cooperation, and gratitude. In addition, …

The Zebrafish Fleer Gene Encodes An Essential Regulator Of Cilia Tubulin Polyglutamylation, Narendra Pathak, Tomoko Obara, Steve Mangos, Yan Liu, Iain A. Drummond

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

Cilia and basal bodies are essential organelles for a broad spectrum of functions, including the development of left-right asymmetry, kidney function, cerebrospinal fluid transport, generation of photoreceptor outer segments, and hedgehog signaling. Zebrafish fleer (flr) mutants exhibit kidney cysts, randomized left-right asymmetry, hydrocephalus, and rod outer segment defects, suggesting a pleiotropic defect in ciliogenesis. Positional cloning flr identified a tetratricopeptide repeat protein homologous to the Caenorhabditis elegans protein DYF1 that was highly expressed in ciliated cells, flr pronephric cilia were shortened and showed a reduced beat amplitude, and olfactory cilia were absent in mutants, flr cilia exhibited ultrastructural defects in …

Vulnerability And The Erosion Of Seismic Culture In Mountainous Central Asia, Sarah J. Halvorson, Jennifer Parker Hamilton Nov 2007

Vulnerability And The Erosion Of Seismic Culture In Mountainous Central Asia, Sarah J. Halvorson, Jennifer Parker Hamilton

Geography Faculty Publications

Vulnerability to earthquake disasters in mountainous regions frequently escapes investigation and analysis. The tragic and costly earthquake disasters that have recently occurred in Central Asia have spurred important questions among local, regional, and international policymakers, scientists, and social activists regarding the root causes of earthquake vulnerability. Drawing on an analysis of recent earthquake disasters in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, this article explores the concept of “seismic culture” (Degg and Homan 2005) in relation to vulnerability. Specifically, it argues that diminishing levels of indigenous hazard knowledge, demographic shifts, gendered livelihood transformations, and the lack of public access to science- based …

Boundaries Of Exclusion, Geogrette Chapman Phillips Nov 2007

Boundaries Of Exclusion, Geogrette Chapman Phillips

Missouri Law Review

This article is a story about boundaries and exclusion and about how - or whether - there is a community based right to exclude nonresidents. The right of the individual to own property, to defend that property and to exclude others from entering that property are sticks in the bundle of rights enshrined in US property law. The limitations on that exclusion are determined by the creation of a legally defined property line that bounds these rights. That part of our story is relatively straightforward. However, we do not live our lives in isolation. We surround ourselves with a chosen …

Mortgage Law In China: Comparing Theory And Practice, Gregory M. Stein

Missouri Law Review

This Article examines Chinese mortgage law as it actually operates in the field, focusing on both legal and business issues. During the summer of 2005, I interviewed dozens of Chinese and Western lawyers, bankers, real estate developers, government officials, judges, economists, real estate consultants, law professors, business professors, real estate agents, law students, and recent homebuyers. Their comments offer reliable insights into how China's real estate markets truly function. The discussion that follows draws on these conversations to examine China's budding mortgage law practices, including how they developed, how they comport with or differ from written laws, and what questions …

Chemotherapy Related Cognitive Impairment In The Rat, Jessica Boyette Davis Nov 2007

Chemotherapy Related Cognitive Impairment In The Rat, Jessica Boyette Davis

Psychology Theses - Archive

Treatment for cancer has been indicated to negatively impact the quality of life for patients. Specifically, chemotherapy has been associated with fatigue, nausea, and peripheral neuropathy. More recently, chemotherapy has also been found to be related to cognitive impairment in various cognitive domains including working memory, information processing speed, and visual attention. At this time, the mechanisms underlying this impairment are not understood and there is currently no treatment for this condition. The purpose of this study was to model chemotherapy related cognitive impairments using an established test of attention in rats. While receiving the chemotherapeutic agent Taxol, animals were …

Education Masters

The rates of children diagnosed with autism in the United States today are steadily increasing. Children with autism are enrolling in the public school system in increasing numbers, and many require support from paraeducators. Engaging a child with autism in learning can be a tremendous challenge that requires specialized skills and strategies. Therefore paraeducators need specialized skills and strategies when working with a student with Autism Spectrum Disorder to insure meaningful and effective support for students. Exactly what skills and strategies do paraeducators need? A review of the literature as well as research is undertaken to examine what autism is, …

Characterization Of Polymorphic Microsatellite Loci For The Invasive Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta Monachus), M. A. Russello, V. Saranathan, S. Buhrman-Deever, J. Eberhard, A. Caccone Nov 2007

Characterization Of Polymorphic Microsatellite Loci For The Invasive Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta Monachus), M. A. Russello, V. Saranathan, S. Buhrman-Deever, J. Eberhard, A. Caccone

Faculty Publications

Microsatellite loci were characterized for the monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) from a GTn-enriched genomic library. Twelve of 14 microsatellite loci were polymorphic, averaging 6.7 alleles per locus across the 20 individuals genotyped. Mean expected heterozygosity was 0.72, with locus-specific values ranging from 0.53 to 0.90. An equally high multilocus probability of identity (2.48 × 10-12) was revealed for this set of loci. In addition, all 12 loci were demonstrated to cross-amplify to varying extents within three additional parrot genera suggesting their potential utility for population-level studies in a broad range of Neotropical psittacines. © 2007 The Authors.

Learning Multiple Languages In Groups, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber Nov 2007

Learning Multiple Languages In Groups, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider a variant of Gold’s learning paradigm where a learner receives as input different languages (in the form of one text where all input languages are interleaved). Our goal is to explore the situation when a more “coarse” classification of input languages is possible, whereas more refined classification is not. More specifically, we answer the following question: under which conditions, a learner, being fed different languages, can produce grammars covering all input languages, but cannot produce grammars covering input languages for any . We also consider a variant of this task, where each of the output grammars may not …

The genome sequence (1.9-fold coverage) of an inbred Abyssinian domestic cat was assembled, mapped, and annotated with a comparative approach that involved cross-reference to annotated genome assemblies of six mammals (human, chimpanzee, mouse, rat, dog, and cow). The results resolved chromosomal positions for 663,480 contigs, 20,285 putative feline gene orthologs, and 133,499 conserved sequence blocks (CSBs). Additional annotated features include repetitive elements, endogenous retroviral sequences, nuclear mitochondrial (numt) sequences, micro-RNAs, and evolutionary breakpoints that suggest historic balancing of translocation and inversion incidences in distinct mammalian lineages. Large numbers of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), deletion insertion polymorphisms (DIPs), and …

Separation, Risk, And The Necessity Of Privacy To Well-Being: A Comment On Adam Moore's Toward Informational Privacy Rights, Kenneth Einar Himma

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, I want to raise doubts about certain of Moore's premises in his argument defending information privacy rights. As always and I say this as a continuing admirer of his skill as a philosopher, information theorist, and legal theorist his argument is well thought out and persuasively written. But, as we will see, there are serious problems with each major plank of his schema for justifying privacy rights.

Sporophytic Inbreeding Depression In Mosses Occurs In A Species With Separate Sexes But Not In A Species With Combined Sexes, Philip J. Taylor, Sarah M. Eppley, Linley K. Jesson Nov 2007

Sporophytic Inbreeding Depression In Mosses Occurs In A Species With Separate Sexes But Not In A Species With Combined Sexes, Philip J. Taylor, Sarah M. Eppley, Linley K. Jesson

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Inbreeding depression is a critical factor countering the evolution of inbreeding and thus potentially shaping the evolution of plant sexual systems. Current theory predicts that inbreeding depression could have important evolutionary consequences, even in haploid-dominant organisms. To date, no data have been reported on inbreeding depression in moss species. Here, we present data on the magnitude of inbreeding depression in sporophytic traits of moss species with contrasting breeding systems. In eratodon purpureus (Ditrichaceae), a moss species with separate sexes, self-fertilizations between sibling gametophytes (intergametophytic selfing) significantly reduced fitness in two of four traits quantified, with seta length and capsule length …

Detecting Shifts In Soil Microbial Community Structure And Function Post Landspread Of Manure Or Biosolids Containing Antimicrobial Chemicals, Kelly Lehnert, Sharon A. Clay, Susan Gibson, Volker Brozel Nov 2007

Detecting Shifts In Soil Microbial Community Structure And Function Post Landspread Of Manure Or Biosolids Containing Antimicrobial Chemicals, Kelly Lehnert, Sharon A. Clay, Susan Gibson, Volker Brozel

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Soil microbial diversity and community interaction play an indispensable role in 2,4-dichorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) herbicide degradation. The addition of manure or municipal waste biosolids through landspreading may alter soil community structure and function if these materials contain antimicrobial chemicals like chlortetracycline (CTC), administered in livestock feed to promote animal growth and health or tetracycline (TET) utilized in human health. In this study, soil applied with manure collected from pigs fed standard CTC levels was compared to soil containing manure from control pigs fed no CTC, and a comparison of soil applied with biosolids containing TET or without TET to distinguish …

Using Instream Flows On The Gila River To Provide Benefits For The Environment And The Economy, Emily Geery

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Professionals within the fields of water resources and community and regional planning have engaged in dialogue about how to balance water consumption with development patterns in the western United States. Central to this discussion is a debate about future water management of the Gila River. There is a wide spectrum of opinions regarding the value of leaving water in the river for environmental reasons versus diverting it from the river for increased commercial development. The 2004 Arizona Water Settlements Act (AWSA) provides the state of New Mexico with 140,000 acre-feet in any ten-year period of water rights on the Gila …
