Biofuel Feedstocks: The Risk Of Future Invasions, Joseph M. Ditomaso, Jacob N. Barney, Allison M. Fox
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
In an effort to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, expand domestic energy production, and maintain economic growth, public and private investments are being used to pursue dedicated feedstock crops for biofuel production. Unlike food crops grown for grain-based ethanol (e.g., corn), which require high inputs of fertilizers and pesticides and typically are grown on prime agricultural land, proposed lignocellulose-based energy crops (e.g., switchgrass) typically have a neutral or negative carbon budget, require relatively few economic or environmental inputs, and can be cultivated on marginal, lower-productivity land. Thus, a rapidly growing industry related to crop selection, cultivar improvement, and conversion technilogies is …

The Effect Of Fin Use On The Speed Of Lifesaving Rescues, Jose Arturo Abraldes, Susana Soares, Antônio Barroso Lima, Ricardo Jorge Fernandes, João Paulo Vilas-Boas
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The authors analyzed how using 2 types of fins altered the velocity ( v ) and fatigue indexes (FI) of lifeguards during mannequin carries. Ten participants performed 3 trials of 25-m mannequin carries at maximal v while barefoot and while wearing flexible and fiber-type fins. A swim-sensor speedometer was used for measuring v. Mean v during 2-s periods was computed in the beginning, middle, and at the end of the event. The slopes of v and FI were computed for the first and second halves of each trial as well as for the total time required. After it had been …

Aquaculture Of Coral, Live Rocks And Associated Products. Draft Final 'Policy' Paper., Department Of Fisheries Western Australia
Fisheries Management Papers
Aquarium enthusiasts use corals, live rock and associated products (e.g. sand) to enhance the aesthetics or function of the marine aquaria they keep and enjoy. There is a large and growing market for these products.
The Department of Fisheries has prepared this draft ‘Final Policy Paper’ as the second phase in the development of a management framework for the aquaculture of coral and live rock. The document outlines the position and needs of the emerging industry and identifies the management arrangements and policies the Department of Fisheries is proposing to implement.

Using Confirmatory Factor Analysis To Understand Executive Control In Preschool Children: I. Latent Structure, S. A. Wiebe, K. A. Espy, D. Charak
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
Although many tasks have been developed recently to study executive control in the preschool years, the constructs that underlie performance on these tasks are poorly understood. In particular, it is unclear whether executive control is comprised of multiple, separable cognitive abilities (e.g., inhibition and working memory) or whether it is unitary in nature. A sample of 243 normally developing children between 2.25 and 6 years of age completed a battery of age appropriate executive control tasks. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to compare multiple models of executive control empirically. A single-factor, general model was sufficient to account for the …

Word Ways
In the last issue of Word Ways, Kickshaws became Limerickshaws, a special edition celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1907 British Limerick Craze. The column began with 28 words found using Google. Each of the words referred to limericks, and each began with an L. Similarly the words above refer to limericks, but they begin with letters other than L. Most of them are terms that writers have made up to refer to invented forms.

The 2005 Kashmir Earthquake: A Perspective On Women's Experiences, Jennifer Parker Hamilton, Sarah Halvorson
Geography Faculty Publications
The 2005 Kashmir Earthquake is illustrative of the intensity and scope associated with catastrophic earthquake disasters in mountainous regions. The experience of the immediate aftermath, relief and recovery, and community reconstruction underscores how this event impacted mountain women, particularly in their roles in rescue and relief efforts and in rebuilding households and communities. A situational analysis was undertaken in order to document and make recommendations for the significant challenges and concerns facing women earthquake survivors in 3 of the valleys most proximate to the epicenter. Earthquake planning and mitigation strategies in northern Pakistan and elsewhere need to focus on reducing …

Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B is a major cause of bacterial meningitis in younger populations. The available vaccines are based on outer membrane vesicles obtained from wild-type strains. In children less than 2 years old they confer protection only against strains expressing homologous PorA, a major, variable outer membrane protein (OMP). We genetically modified a strain in order to eliminate PorA and to overproduce one or several minor and conserved OMPs. Using a mouse model mimicking children's PorA-specific bactericidal activity, it was demonstrated that overproduction of more than one minor OMP is required to elicit antibodies able to induce complement-mediated killing …

Humla District in Nepal is a very remote area, prone to food shortages and characterized by a harsh environment. The livelihoods of agropastoralists in this district became much more vulnerable during the recent Maoist insurgency, and this vulnerability was particularly acute in some areas. As a result, people in different villages responded quite differently to an externally funded holistic community development project-one of the only projects the Maoists allowed to proceed with in Humla during the height of the unrest. Villagers' responses to this health- and conservation-oriented development project seem to correlate most closely with socioeconomic status and ability to …

A digital video image (DVI) stock monitoring programme was developed for the Haliotis laevigata and H. roei abalone fisheries in Western Australia. The program used industry divers to collect stock density and length-frequency data using digital video from 51 survey sites across the fishery, while image extraction, data processing and storage is carried out by research staff. Training videos, DVDs, and a comprehensive suite of experimental tests on both abalone species were utilised to achieve this outcome. Comparisons between DVI data collected by industry divers, and fishery independent survey (FIS) data showed mean legal sized …

Perinatal Ph And Neuropsychological Outcomes At Age 3 Years In Children Born Preterm: An Exploratory Study, Kimberly A. Espy, Theresa E. Senn, David A. Charak, Jill Tyler, Sandra A. Wiebe
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
The impact of extreme prematurity and related hypoxic-ischemic events on brain development recently has begun to be characterized with modern neuroimaging methods, although comparatively less is known about the neuropathology in those born at heavier birth weights. Even subclinical levels of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia, as indexed by perinatal blood pH, are related to intelligence in school-aged children born preterm. Given the impact of hypoxia-ischemia on white matter and the emerging evidence of specific executive and mathematic deficits in children born preterm, the impact of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia on these outcomes was explored in children at relatively low-risk for sequelae. In a sample …

Created Facts And The Flawed Ontology Of Copyright Law, Justin Hughes
Created Facts And The Flawed Ontology Of Copyright Law, Justin Hughes
Notre Dame Law Review
It is black letter doctrine that facts are not copyrightable: facts are discovered, not created—so they will always lack the originality needed for copyright protection. As straightforward as this reasoning seems, it is fundamentally flawed. Using the “social facts” theory of philosopher John Searle, this Article explores a variety of “created facts” cases—designation systems, systematic evaluations, and privately written laws—in which original expression from private individuals is adopted by social convention and generates facts in our social reality. In the course of this discussion, the paper places facts in their historical and philosophical context, explores how courts conflate facts with …

University Libraries' Staff Publications
Last year, we looked at 5 options for the e-reference collection for the academic and large public library market: ABC-CLIO's History Reference Online, Gale Virtual Reference Library, Greenwood Digital Collection, Oxford Reference Online, and Xrefer's Xreferplus. Much has changed in one year. Xrefer has now become Credo Reference and has added more than 200 historic videos and flash_audio animations, 1,700 audio files, a link resolver for bibliographic entries, and a new interface (to debut in less than 6 months). Greenwood added 500 new tides in 2007, all imprints from 2005 to 2007. Gale added 16 new publishers and released an …

Uniform Particles Of Pure And Silica Coated Cholesterol, Vuk Uskoković, Egon Matijević
Uniform Particles Of Pure And Silica Coated Cholesterol, Vuk Uskoković, Egon Matijević
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Uniform crystalline colloidal cholesterol particles of narrow size distribution were obtained by precipitation. The method consisted of adding a miscible non-solvent (water) into cholesterol solutions of different alcohols and acetone, without any additives. The properties of the resulting particles depended in a sensitive way on the concentration of all reactants, temperature, pH, ionic strength, and aging time. The major observed effects were due to the solubility of cholesterol, which was strongly affected by the solvent mixture and temperature. Precipitation in 1-propanol/water system yielded stable dispersions of well-defined particles, which were used to evaluate the effects of different experimental parameters on …

Wireless Devices For Medical Applications, Thermpon Ativanichayaphong
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The deployment of medical electronics in healthcare plays a significant role to overcome many problems in disease treatment and diagnosis. For advanced applications, wireless solutions are preferred. The wireless technologies offer a new dimension of therapy or diagnosis, when wires are often bulky, unsafe, uncomfortable or even impossible to be deployed in some circumstances. The wireless communication devices can be categorized into two groups, active and passive, depending on the power sources operating electronics. The active devices draw powers from a battery, while the others harvest powers from external or internal sources. In this work, two medical applications are studied …

Gene Family Encoding The Major Toxins Of Lethal Amanita Mushrooms, Heather E. Hallen-Adams, Hong Luo, John S. Scott-Craig, Jonathan D. Walton
Heather Hallen-Adams Publications
Amatoxins, the lethal constituents of poisonous mushrooms in the genus Amanita, are bicyclic octapeptides. Two genes in A. bisporigera, AMA1 and PHA1, directly encode α-amanitin, an amatoxin, and the related bicyclic heptapeptide phallacidin, a phallotoxin, indicating that these compounds are synthesized on ribosomes and not by nonribosomal peptide synthetases. α-Amanitin and phallacidin are synthesized as proproteins of 35 and 34 amino acids, respectively, from which they are predicted to be cleaved by a prolyl oligopeptidase. AMA1 and PHA1 are present in other toxic species of Amanita section Phalloidae but are absent from nontoxic species in other sections. …

In mammalian cells, mRNA decay begins with deadenylation, which involves two consecutive phases mediated by the PAN2-PAN3 and the CCR4-CAF1 complexes, respectively. The regulation of the critical deadenylation step and its relationship with RNA-processing bodies (P-bodies), which are thought to be a site where poly(A)-shortened mRNAs get degraded, are poorly understood. Using the Tet-Off transcriptional pulsing approach to investigate mRNA decay in mouse NIH 3T3 fibroblasts, we found that TOB, an antiproliferative transcription factor, enhances mRNA deadenylation in vivo. Results from glutathione S-transferase pull-down and coimmunoprecipitation experiments indicate that TOB can simultaneously interact with the poly(A) nuclease complex CCR4-CAF1 and …
