Linking Bacterioplankton Community Structures To Environmental State Variables And Phytoplankton Assemblages In Two South Carolina Salt Marsh Estuaries, Wes Johnson, Alan J. Lewitus, Madilyn Fletcher

Faculty Publications

Microorganisms are among the most important organisms to the ecology of salt marsh estuaries; however, fundamental questions regarding their distribution, environmental controls, and interactions with phytoplankton remain unanswered. We used denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of bacterial rRNA genes and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) of phytoplankton photopigments to characterize planktonic communities from the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto (ACE) Basin and North Inlet (NI) estuaries on the South Carolina coast, USA. Multivariate comparisons of the planktonic community profiles revealed that the 2 estuaries supported distinct bacterial communities. Furthermore, bacterial communities in both systems were partitioned into separate particle-associated (PA) and …

Background: The survivorship and distribution of Anopheles arabiensis larvae and pupae was examined in a rice agroecosystem in Mwea Irrigation Scheme, central Kenya, from August 2005 to April 2006, prior to implementation of larval control programme. Methods: Horizontal life tables were constructed for immatures in semi-field condition. The time spent in the various immature stages was determined and survival established. Vertical life tables were obtained from five paddies sampled by standard dipping technique. Results: Pre-adult developmental time for An. arabiensis in the trays in the experimental set up in the screen house was 11.85 days from eclosion to emergence. The …

Energetics Of Oxaspirocycle Prototypes: 1,7-Dioxaspiro[5.5]Undecane And 1,7,9-Trioxadispiro[5.1.5.3]Hexadecane, Abby Jones Weldon, Gregory S. Tschumper Nov 2006

Energetics Of Oxaspirocycle Prototypes: 1,7-Dioxaspiro[5.5]Undecane And 1,7,9-Trioxadispiro[5.1.5.3]Hexadecane, Abby Jones Weldon, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

(Chemical Equation Presented) The relative gas-phase energetics of several low-lying isomers of 1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane and 1,7,9-trioxadispiro[5.1.5. 3]hexadecane have been calculated with second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory and basis sets as large as aug-cc-pVQZ. Relative energies in THF, dichloromethane, acetone, and DMSO have been estimated with corrections from polarized continuum model calculations at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d) level. In the most stable conformation of 1,7-dioxaspiro[5.5]undecane, both rings adopt chair conformations, and both oxygens are axially disposed (2A). It is more than 2 kcal mol-1 more stable than all the other conformers. In agreement with previous work, the "twist-boat" trans isomer (3A) is the most …

Understanding The Other Side: The Traits Of Partners Of Individuals With Neurotic Traits In Committed Premarital Relationships, Ryan W. Blick Nov 2006

Understanding The Other Side: The Traits Of Partners Of Individuals With Neurotic Traits In Committed Premarital Relationships, Ryan W. Blick

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the partners' traits and skills that predict relationship satisfaction in committed, premarital relationships in which one person has neurotic traits, as well as to examine the degree of consensus about neuroticism for both individuals. Data from 198 never-married, young adult, premarital couples who had completed the RELATionship Evaluation (RELATE) questionnaire were used in the analyses. Measures of perceived partner traits and skills included levels of empathic communication, clear sending, flooding, kindness, flexibility, criticism, and contempt and defensiveness. Relationship satisfaction as measured by RELATE was the criterion variable. Results showed little agreement between …

Fluorescence Blinking Statistics From Cdse Core And Core/Shell Nanorods, S. Wang, C. Querner, Thomas B. Emmons , '08, M. Drndic, Catherine Hirshfeld Crouch

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We report fluorescence blinking statistics measured from single CdSe nanorods (NRs) of seven different sizes with aspect ratios ranging from 3 to 11. This study also included core/shell CdSe/ZnSe NRs and core NRs with two different surface ligands producing different degrees of surface passivation. We compare the findings for NRs to our measurements of blinking statistics from spherical CdSe core and CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals (NCs). We find that, for both NRs and spherical NCs, the off-time probability distributions are well described by a power law, while the on-time probability distributions are best described by a truncated power law, P(tau(on)) similar …

Notes On Identity, New Synonymy And Larva Of Ivalia Jacoby (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) With Description Of A New Species, Catherine N. Duckett, Kaniyarikkal Divakaran Prathapan, Alexander S. Konstantinov

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Genus Ivalia Jacoby is characterized morphologically, and Amphimeloides Jacoby syn. nov. and Taizonia Chen syn. nov. are junior synonyms with it. Several Ivalia species are figured, including Ivalia bella (Chen) comb. nov., I. dorsalis (Jacoby) comb. nov., and I. viridipennis Jacoby. A new species of Ivalia from the Nilgiri Hills in south India, I. korakundah sp. nov., is described and illustrated, including the larvae. Larvae were associated with adults by sequencing a fragment of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I. Larval morphology is discussed and compared with that of other flea beetles.

Coronal Mass Ejection Research Group

We combine in situ measurements from Cluster with high-resolution 557.7 nm all-sky images from South Pole to investigate the spatial and temporal evolution of merging on the dayside magnetopause. Variations of 557.7 nm emissions were observed at a 6 s cadence at South Pole on 29 April 2003 while significant changes in the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) clock angle were reaching the magnetopause. Electrons energized at merging sites are the probable sources for 557.7 nm cusp emissions. At the same time Cluster was crossing the pre-noon cusp in the Northern Hemisphere. The combined observations confirm results of a previous study …

Long-Term Neuroadaptations Produced By Withdrawal From Repeated Cocaine Treatment: Role Of Dopaminergic Receptors In Modulating Cortical Excitability, Lourdes Nogueira, Peter W. Kalivas, Antonieta Lavin

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Dopamine (DA) modulates neuronal activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and is necessary for optimal cognitive function. Dopamine transmission in the PFC is also important for the behavioral adaptations produced by repeated exposure to cocaine. Therefore, we investigated the effects of repeated cocaine treatment followed by withdrawal (2– 4 weeks) on the responsivity of cortical cells to electrical stimulation of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and to systemic administration of DA D1 or D2 receptor antagonists. Cortical cells in cocaine- and saline-treated animals exhibited a similar decrease in excitability after the administration of D1 receptor antagonists. In contrast, cortical neurons …
